IPL 2018: Liam Plunkett replaced injured Kagiso Rabada in Delhi's team

Chennai, the two-time champions are making their way back into IPL where they have been the most consistent side across 10 years.

The franchise was banned for two years following charges of spot-fixing and betting against key team officials.

Led by former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Chennai is the only franchise to be captained by the same person since the inaugural edition in 2008.

The Dhoni-led team will face defending champions Mumbai in the opener at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

With some exciting buy at the held auctions in January, let's take a look at the probable playing XI for Chennai. &nbsp

Murali Vijay - The local boy has a phenomenal record with Chennai. In almost every season, he has given a good start to his team and maintains skipper's trust as an opener. &nbsp

Shane Watson - The former Australian can provide a flying start to the team and is a decent bowler to restrict the opponents.&nbsp

Suresh Raina - The left-handed player holds the highest run-getter record in the history of IPL. He is also capable of bowling and can take wickets at crucial stages.&nbsp

Faf Duplessis - Can play different roles as per the situation. He can build an innings and also can play shots from the beginning.

MS Dhoni - His presence is enough to bring down the confidence and strength of the opponent team. But the skipper has to take the driver's seat to reflect his return to his second-home Chennai.&nbsp

Kedar Jadhav- He is a great asset for the team as he could give some overs of his spin bowling too if needed.

Dwayne Bravo - He is a complete entertainer. Death bowler and a big hitter at the end of the innings.

Ravindra Jadeja - He is one of the most unpredictable player. A complete all-rounder with bowling being his speciality. He can have a great partnership with Dhoni behind the stumps.

Harbhajan Singh - His cricketing experience will be crucial for team. He can play some shots towards the end of the innings. He has experience of batting at the top of the order. He can bowl some defensive lines.

Lungi Ngidi - He has an economy of 5.5 in the 3 T20Is he has played so far. He is a good bowler with a lot of variations.

Shardul Thakur - A good swing bowler. Capable of getting wickets in the power play and also bowls variations at the death. the player has already left an impression with his knuckle ball too.

With this squad, the team has batting options till number 9 which is very crucial in T20s.&nbsp

Delhi Daredevils is high on hopes of winning the Indian Premier Leagues' trophy with the arrival of Gautam Gambhir in 'Dilli' after six years.

IPL 2018 squad analysis: Dark Knight 'Gautam' returns winning hope to Delhi Daredevils

Three-time winners and defending champions Mumbai Indians do not want to be tagged as favourites in the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League, insisted coach Mahela Jayawardene here today.

"We are going to start from scratch. We are proud to be the defending champions, but we don't see ourselves as favourites. We see ourselves as equally good and striving to be better than the others. We will take it one game at a time," said the former Sri Lanka skipper at a press conference.

"The combinations have changed after the (mega players') auction in all franchises. Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab - all these teams have gone in with new players which we have to be aware of, mindful of," pointed out the former Lanka batting stylist.

MI are to open their campaign against arch-rivals and two time winners Chennai Super Kings - who are making a return to the tournament after serving a two-year suspension - at their home, Wankhede Stadium, here on April 7.

Talking about his team, Jayawardene was pleased that MI was able to maintain its core although it will be without two of its key bowlers - his compatriot Lasith Malinga, who has stopped playing but will be with the team as its mentor, and off spinner Harbhajan Singh - who will turn out for CSK.

"It was important for us to maintain the core. We have invested in a group of players, looking at the future. It's about gelling together. Mali (Malinga) is here with us helping the young group. Harbhajan is with CSK. That's the way the game evolves and the next generation takes over. That's the reality we have to be ready for."

The Sri Lankan said the workload of Australian pacer Pat Cummins, set to join the squad tomorrow after an impressive stint in the lost Test series against South Africa, will be monitored as it was a long tournament.

"Cummins is someone who we have to manage during the long tournament like we did last year with all our fast bowlers."

He also praised the captaincy of Rohit Sharma and the fearless bowling of Jasprit Bumrah.

"He's (Rohit) got good leadership skills. He's guided a lot of younger guys. They have matured quickly. He's getting the best out of everybody. That's probably why he's so successful as captain in franchise cricket.

"Bumrah - I don't know whether he understands the word pressure. He's quite comfortable with the role he plays for us as well as what he does for India. Bums loves the challenge. Last year there was that super over (v Gujarat Lions). We had Mali, but we went to Bumrah," he gushed.

He also hailed Hardik Pandya's bowling and said the team had plenty of options with New Zealander Mitchell McClenaghan also in the mix.

"Hardik has come a long way with the ball for the national team as a bowler. He's a much improved bowler. We have lot of options. McClenaghan has been very successful, but at the same time has been struggling with injuries and form over the last 12 months. Probably other franchises too had the same thought process (during auction in which he was not bought).

"But when we had the injury for (Australian pacer Jason) Behrendorff, we picked Mitch. He is someone we have worked with and he knows MI culture. It was an easy decision for us. He's come back strong. He looks healthy in the net sessions," Jayawardene said.

Jayawardene said they are going to start from scratch

The most star-studded franchise of all seasons, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), this time will look to win the IPL title and break the jinx of losing despite having the top players of the world in previous seasons, can say universe!

RCB believed in decking up power hitters, this time also they have pooled in Brendon McCullum, Quinton de Kock, all-rounders like Chris Woakes, Colin de Grandhomme and Corey Anderson.

Wonder kid of IPL, Sarfraz Khan has already impressed the spectators by his batting capabilities, though he needs to shed some pounds to prove himself as a fielder.

Before entering the auction RCB had retained Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Sarfraz Khan.

They had legendary Chris Gayle but for some unknown reason, he was snubbed during the auctions. RCB had to take such strict decision as they have been compromising with the variety of seamers and suffered when it comes to defend a mammoth total, so they had to make adjustments to prevail over the problem.

As many as 18 players donned the Mumbai Indians jersey in 2017 season, however, only six of those have made it to the MI team in 2018.&nbsp

Yet again, the Nita Ambani-owned franchise will be entering the stadium this year with its core team, unfortunately, losing out on some key players though.&nbsp

The Right to Match Card was used to keep all-rounders Kieron Pollard and the uncapped Indian player Krunal Pandya in their side.

It was a brilliant move to retain these players but in their quest for keeping the core alive, Mumbai lost some of its best performers of the recent past.&nbsp

Nitish Rana, for instance, played a handy role in Mumbai’s success in 2017, with 13 matches, 333 runs, 3 half centuries record, but is not part of this year’s squad.&nbsp

Similarly, senior off-spinner Harbhajan Singh -8 wickets in 11 matches in 2017 and Mitchell McClenaghan -19 wickets in 14 matches in 2017- were not included in this year's MI Paltan.

Despite run-machines like Rohit Sharma, Pollard and Hardik, who have played some blistering knocks that have led their side to wins from tricky situations in previous seasons, batting remains a concern for the team.

They are thin in this department and are overly dependent on few players, who may not perform during crucial stages.&nbsp

In pace attack,&nbspthe franchise has not left any space to be taken advantage off.

Mustafizur Rahman, Jason Behrendroff and Pradeep Sangwan would come handy for the defending champions.&nbsp

Mustafizur was exceptional for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in their title-winning campaign in 2016 with 17 wickets. &nbspThe left-arm pacer is an excellent choice for his versatility and ability to bowl quick.&nbsp

Same goes for left-arm pacer Australian Jason Behrendorff.

Apart from them, Australia’s Pat Cummins is another fast bowler who can rip apart the opposition and trouble the batsmen. &nbsp

However, Jasprit Bumrah will be the leader of the pack and is growing as one of the best with each day in international cricket.

The team has gone heavy on pace attack but are weak on spin.&nbsp

The Right to Match Card was used to keep all-rounders Pollard and Krunal in their side

As many as 18 players donned the Mumbai Indians jersey in 2017 season, however, only six of those have made it to the MI team in 2018. Yet again, the Nita Ambani-owned franchise will be entering the stadium this year with its core team, unfortunately, losing out on some key players though. Skipper Rohit Sharma, all-rounder Hardik Pandya and 'yorker king' Jasprit Bumrah were retained by the franchise. They are thin in this department and are overly dependent on few players, who may not perform during crucial stages. In pace attack,&nbspthe franchise has not left any space to be taken advantage off. Mustafizur Rahman, Jason Behrendroff and Pradeep Sangwan would come handy for the defending champions. Mustafizur was exceptional for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in their title-winning campaign in 2016 with 17 wickets. &nbspThe left-arm pacer is an excellent choice for his versatility and ability to bowl quick. Same goes for left-arm pacer Australian Jason Behrendorff. Apart from them, Australia’s Pat Cummins is another fast bowler who can rip apart the opposition and trouble the batsmen. However, Jasprit Bumrah will be the leader of the pack and is growing as one of the best with each day in international cricket. The team has gone heavy on pace attack but are weak on spin. Hence a lot of work will need to be done by the pacers and all-rounders to defend their title in IPL 2018.

IPL 2018 squad analysis of SRH- 'Sun to rise' on bowlers' shoulders after Warner's exit

It would be first time in 10 seasons of Indian Premier League (IPL) that such an uncertainty is surrounding over players bought either at auctions or the ones retained.

In last two weeks, all eight franchises have had their ups and downs which raised eyebrows on playing chances of several players of each team.

From Delhi Daredevil's Mohammad Shami being accused of match-fixing by his estranged wife to Australian skipper Steve Smith admitting ball tampering in a Test match against South Africa, the past few days have been full of scandals and controversies.

If nothing controversial erupted, the injury entered the field and worked as a spoiler for the upcoming edition.

With a list of players being ruled out or banned for the upcoming edition, here's a list of replacement which went unsold at the IPL auctions in January.

Hashim Amla: With a base price of Rs 1.5 crore, Amla going unsold was almost a shocker. The South African all-rounder had a splendid year when he struck blistering tons in IPL 2017 for KXIP. He scored 420 runs in 10 matches at an incredible average of 60 runs and strike rate of 145.83. Despite being the sixth highest run-getter in the 10th edition Amla went unsold.

Alex Hales: An explosive opener is what every franchise targets while choosing players, yet, the swashbuckling English batsman, Alex Hales failed to attract any bid, even at his base price of 1 crore. Ranked eighth on ICC's current T20I batting list, Hales has career runs of 4544 at a strike-rate of 143.52.

Martin Guptill: IPL hasn't been the happy hunting ground for the New Zealand opener despite his strike rate in the limited-overs format of cricket. He was first in Mumbai Indians squad in 2016 and then part of KXIP in 2017 and following both seasons, his average stands at just 21 with 189 runs in a total of 10 games. But can be considered a possible replacement seeing his current form and cricketing experience.

Joe Root: The England Test captain wasn't shown keen interest upon because Root won't be available for the entire of the season. But his T20I stat isn't bad at all, in fact, numbers in India are applauding. In 2017, he played three T20Is against India and had averaged above 40. And then in the ICC T20 World Cup in 2016, he had amassed 249 runs striking at a rate of 146.57 which included his knock of 83 against South Africa.

Heinrich Klaasen: Klaasen was responsible for the two wins that the Proteas recorded during the limited-overs series against India, where wrist-spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were dominated. Though his base price is not disclosed, but he is considered a possible replacement for Steve Smith.

Shaun Marsh: Kings XI Punjab showed no interest in Shaun Marsh, who helped shape their team in the last 10 years. In the last IPL season, Marsh had scored 264 runs in nine matches, including two half-centuries. The Aussie batsman had recently scored a century during the second Ashes Test against England. Despite coming up for a second time during the auction, Marsh had no takers for IPL 2018.

Lasith Malinga: Sri Lankan pacer has been an iconic player in the tournament, and has been playing for Mumbai Indians since 2009. However, the 34-year-old cricketer has been struggling with form since his ankle surgery in 2015. He was also dropped from Sri Lanka’s squad for the ODI and T20 series in India last year.

Ishant Sharma: The tall and experienced right-arm fast-medium bowler of the Indian cricket team may have found solace in the Test format of cricket, but his T20 stats still put him low in the eyes of the bidders who once again ignored his likely possibilities in the upcoming season. Despite takng wickets at several crucial moments, the Indian pacer went unsold.
