The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will proceed with a meeting with former world number one doubles tennis player Peng Shuai during the Beijing Winter Olympics but details of the meeting will not be shared in advance, it said on Sunday.

The well-being of Peng, a three-time Olympian, became a matter of concern in November when she appeared to allege on social media that a former Chinese vice premier, Zhang Gaoli, had sexually assaulted her in the past.

"We have always said there will be a meeting with her and there have been a series of calls leading up to this moment," IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said.

"That has not changed. As the IOC President so eloquently said we will talk with her and it is up to her to say what will be said. I will not be giving any more details on that."

Peng said in December she had never accused anyone of sexually assaulting her and that the post she made had been misunderstood. Zhang has not commented on the matter.

Ahead of the Beijing Games, the IOC held several video calls with her and had announced a face-to-face meeting during the Feb. 4-20 Games.

It was not clear whether IOC President Thomas Bach would meet with Peng in one of the competition venues or somewhere else in Beijing.

"We wouldn`t be giving a schedule where and if she may or may not be watching (sports). We don`t think it is ideal to be discussed at that level."

"When we have information we feel we are able to share we will do so," Adams said

The IOC has also said it would support her if she wanted her allegations to be investigated.

Despite these contacts and a handful of videos from Peng, international concerns over her safety and well-being have not been allayed and the Women`s Tennis Association (WTA) has suspended tournaments in China.

China has not directly commented on Peng`s initial post but said after the WTA`s move that it "opposes the politicisation of sports".

Rights groups and some western governments have called for China to end what the United States deems genocide against ethnic Uyghurs. United Nations researchers and rights activists estimate more than one million Muslims have been detained in camps in Xinjiang. 
 
China rejects accusations of abuse, describing the camps as vocational centres designed to combat extremism, and in late 2019 said all people in the camps had "graduated".

Strict COVID-19 testing requirements for the Beijing Winter Olympics could see more athletes from high-risk Omicron regions banned from participating, but the system in place will be as flexible as possible, an Olympic medical adviser told Reuters.

Experts have warned that China`s strict "zero-COVID" strategy, as well as its more sensitive testing protocols, could see more athletes excluded from the Games scheduled to take place between Feb. 4 and Feb. 20 - especially from regions that have seen a spike in the highly infectious Omicron variant.

"Some people might not make it, but we are trying to put in place ways in which they can prove with extra testing that although they did have Omicron, they are no longer infectious and can be allowed into China," said Brian McCloskey, a member of the International Olympic Committee`s&nbsp;Medical Expert Panel&nbsp;advising on health measures.

"But it is the countries that saw the early spike in cases that will be the most engaged with it (the testing system)," he told Reuters. 
The Games will proceed in a "closed loop" that will keep overseas athletes from mingling with the Chinese population, and China has also as a precaution restricted spectator ticket allocations.

Rights groups have long criticised the IOC for awarding the Games to China for a second time, after human rights conditions following the 2008 Beijing summer Olympics failed to improve, according to the groups.

Last week, Tibetan students chained themselves to the Olympic rings outside the IOC's Swiss headquarters in Lausanne, calling for an international Games boycott.

Similar protests took place during the Beijing Games torch-lighting ceremony in Greece's ancient Olympia and Athens in October.

The ICC is not losing hope of cricket being among "additional sports" to be played at the 2028 Los Angeles Games after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) started the process of identifying the core sports for the grand sporting spectacle.

The IOC on Thursday named 28 sports in the "initial programme" for the 2028 Olympics with skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing finding places in them. Boxing, weightlifting and modern pentathlon were excluded and the respective international federations have been given time until 2023 to meet certain criteria to secure their spot at the 2028 Games.

The list would be put to vote in the IOC Session in Beijing in February next year for approval, which is likely to be a formality. 
Host City Los Angeles can also propose additional sports in 2023 to be included in the 2028 Games and the ICC is hoping that cricket is among sports to get the nod of the IOC.

Baseball, softball and a version of American football could be in the running to bid for additional sports in 2028 Olympics.

A consultant appointed by the Gujarat government has identified 22 sites in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar cities with a "potential" to host the Olympics, and the state government will soon engage with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to convey its intention to host the games in 2036, an official said on Friday.

The development has come nearly five months after the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) invited proposals from consultants to conduct a "gap analysis"&nbsp;to assess the existing infrastructure in the city and find out what is needed to make it a potential venue for the summer Olympic games.

PricewaterhouseCoopers Private Limited, the consulting agency appointed by the AUDA, on Thursday made a presentation to Gujarat Chief Secretary Pankaj Kumar on infrastructure gap assessment, concept plan and roadmap for hosting 2036 Summer Olympics, a state government release stated.

As per the release, a detailed assessment of all the key sports and non-sports facilities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar has been undertaken, aligned with the requirements of the International Olympic Committee.

"Moreover, places in Goa, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and other national venues may also be considered for hosting of ocean sports, mountain sports and select other sports that are required to be held nationally at various locations," the release said.

"It’s a most unfortunate situation, he told reporters in a webinar.

"The track, and the circumstances under which this accident happened, are being investigated by both the (luge) federation and the organising committee very seriously.

"If there are lessons to be learned, as probably there will, we will implement them and have plenty of time to implement," added the Spaniard.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that it will cut its direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent by 2030, as part of its commitment to tackling climate change.

The announcement was made by IOC President Thomas Bach during the General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), currently taking place in Greece. It comes ahead of the UN Climate Summit (COP26) due to be held at the end of October in Glasgow, Great Britain.

With this decision, the IOC increases its level of ambition from a previous commitment that set a 45 per cent reduction over the same time period, in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

In order to achieve the 50 per cent cut in emissions by 2030, the IOC has set an intermediate reduction target of 30 per cent, to be achieved by 2024. Its action plan to deliver on this commitment will now be updated with increased efforts to reduce emissions in the areas of travel, energy use and procurement.

"The IOC does place a very high emphasis on human rights," Coates told reporters at the National Press Club of Australia.

"But the IOC is not -- the IOC's remit is to ensure that there is no human rights abuses in respect of the conduct of the Games within the National Olympic Committees or within the Olympic movement.

"We have no ability to go into a country and tell them what to do. All we can do is to award the Olympics to a country, under conditions set out in a host contract ... and then ensure that they are followed."

Coates was asked why the IOC would intervene in Afghanistan, where the Games are not being held, but not take a stand in countries where they are.

The IOC said last month it had helped around 100 members of the "Olympic community" in Afghanistan to leave the country on humanitarian visas after the Taliban took control.

"The work the IOC is doing is to protect the Olympians and those involved in the Olympic moments.... those who comprise the sports federations in Afghanistan," he said.

"That's within our remit. The situations that you have referred to, the humanitarian ones in&nbsp;China, is not within our remit."

Narinder Batra, president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), stated on Saturday that the organisation is in talks&nbsp;with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) about hosting the 2036 Summer Games, adding that Ahmedabad's Motera stadium is the ideal location for an opening ceremony.

The Gujarat Cricket Association christened the Motera facility 'Narendra Modi Stadium' in February 2021, after it was renovated to become the world's largest cricket stadium.

"If someone asks me about the venue for the opening ceremony at present, then it is definitely going to be the Motera stadium," Batra told reporters.&nbsp;

He was speaking to the media at an event hosted by TransStadia, a sports infrastructure company located in the city.&nbsp;

"When you say opening ceremony, it means that athletics will also be played (at the same venue). And athletics is the biggest event (at the Olympics)," he said.

The Olympic games may be held in three or four locations in India, according to Batra, and the IOA is in talks with the IOC regarding a prospective hosting&nbsp;for 2036. He said that India has a good probability of gaining the opportunity.

According to the spokesperson, all members from the IOC attending the Summer Games were either vaccinated against the coronavirus or immune, the spokesperson added.

The case was revealed after the first two athletes tested positive in the Olympic Village, a day after a member of their entourage was also infected, officials said on Sunday.

The three cases have raised fears of a cluster in the Village, which will house thousands of athletes and officials.

The Tokyo Olympics were postponed for a year due to the pandemic and are facing significant opposition in Japan due to their Covid risks.
