Young people in and around the Durgapur area in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal are becoming dependent on flavoured condoms for intoxication rather than using them as a method of contraception. What makes this possible, you ask? Apparently, the students soak the condoms in hot water for a while before using them. They remain "high" from the drink for more than 10 to 12 hours.

In recent days, several areas of the state's Durgapur district have seen a dramatic increase in the sale of flavor-infused condoms, according to a news report by Indian media outlets. The need for certain contraceptives has increased in the following areas: Bidhannagar, Muchipara, Durgapur City Center, and Benachiti.

One Durgapur chemistry teacher adds, "Long-term soaking of condoms in hot water breaks down big organic molecules and produces alcohol compounds. The youth are being kept intoxicated by this substance.

There hasn't yet been a formal declaration from the state police. But according to Dhiman Mandal, Superintendent of the Durgapur Subdistrict Hospital, "the condom contains some sort of fragrant ingredient. By dissolving it, alcohol is created. In dendrites, this aromatic substance is also present. Many people are observed to be dendrite-intoxicated.

A few young people in Durgapur have started using flavor-infused condoms to become intoxicated. Shop owners in the region claim that while formerly 3 to 4 packets of condoms were sold per shop each day, a pack of condoms is now frequently going missing. Due to its breakdown into alcoholic chemicals, soaking condoms in hot water might make you drunk.

Youth in this Indian city get intoxicated on ‘flavoured condoms’. But why?

Snapchat's parent company announced on Tuesday that it was taking additional measures to combat drug trafficking on the service, including making it more difficult for users to locate accounts of minors under the age of 17.

It is making the shift at a time when drug overdoses are on the rise across the United States, owing in part to the widespread availability of the powerful opioid fentanyl.

According to an NBC News investigation released in October, Snapchat was linked to the sale of fentanyl-laced pills that murdered teenagers and young adults in over a dozen states.

Following the news, Snap, the service's parent company, claimed it has upgraded its automated systems for detecting illegal narcotics, employed additional staff to handle law enforcement requests, and created an education page focusing on the hazards of fentanyl and counterfeit pills.

"Our position on this has always been clear: we have absolutely zero tolerance for drug dealing on Snapchat," the company said in a blog post announcing the move this week.

"We have a unique opportunity to use our voice, technology, and resources to help address this scourge, which threatens the lives of our community members."

Snapchat claims that proactive detection of drug transactions has increased by 390 percent in the last year, with a 50 percent increase in the last quarter alone.

It went on to say that if its sensors discover drug peddling behaviour, the account is immediately suspended and the creator is barred from creating new Snapchat accounts.

The corporation claims to have increased coordination with law enforcement and cut response times to law enforcement inquiries by 85 percent in the last year.

Snapchat claimed in a blog post that it is working with experts to keep the list of slang and drug-related phrases restricted from search results on Snapchat up to date.
