Young Indians are driving the increased Indian tourist inflows to Thailand with Airbnb reporting a more than 60 per cent year-on-year increase in bookings by Indian guests and tourists to Thailand between 2022 and 2023. This surge in interest, particularly notable during the recent Holi and Easter long weekends, saw searches for Thai stays by Indian travelers increasing by over 200 percent during these periods.

The surge in travel interest is predominantly driven by India's younger demographic. Gen Z and Millennials, who constitute the largest share of the Indian population, accounted for 80 percent of Airbnb bookings to Thailand in 2023.

According to data from Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports, India ranks as the fifth largest inbound market for Thailand. The recent boost in travel can be attributed to several factors, including the Thai government’s visa-free policy for Indian citizens, which has been extended until November 11, 2024, and the availability of numerous non-stop daily flights. This policy has significantly lowered barriers to travel, making Thailand an even more attractive destination for Indian tourists.

Indian-origin couple recounts moments as Sydney stabbings unfolded

Both students and professionals from the Indian diaspora residing in the UK are feeling anxious about the recent revisions in the country's visa policies which are aimed at managing immigration numbers.

WION reached out to several individuals amid this atmosphere of uncertainty and found them grappling with concerns in a land they've come to regard as their second home.

To begin with, the changes include a hike in the minimum income threshold required to bring family members to the country as dependents.

The minimum income necessary for a work visa surged from £18,600 (about ₹19 lakh) annually to £29,000 (nearly ₹30 lakh). An increase of about 55 per cent in income threshold is a big shift.

Miral Shah, a dentist in the UK, told WION, “As a working professional, the increased minimum income requirement for bringing dependents on a work visa will certainly impact me. It raises the financial bar for us. While I understand the need for such measures, it adds pressure, especially considering the rising cost of living."

He said that balancing career growth and family needs becomes even more challenging with these changes and it might end up discouraging talented professionals from considering opportunities here due to the financial strain it imposes.

Shah also shared concerns with WION about the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) which has been tasked with evaluating the Graduate Route visa - also known as Post Study Work (PSW) visas.

PSW visas enable international students to remain in the UK for two years post-graduation to seek employment without sponsorship requirements.

"The potential discontinuation of the Graduate Route visa could pose a significant hurdle for international students planning their careers in the UK.
"Without it, international students may face limited options and increased uncertainty in their career paths, which could ultimately deter them from studying in the UK. It's crucial that the MAC considers the long-term implications of such a decision on both students and the higher education sector," Shah added.

WATCH | Indian Student Exposes Hidden Story Behind 'Canadian Dream' × "While I am fortunate not to be directly affected by the recent changes regarding bringing family members to the UK, I can't help but feel for those who are. University life can be challenging, especially for international students, and having family nearby provides a crucial support system. These changes might deter prospective students from choosing the UK for their education," she said. These concerns are not unfounded. With over 3 lakh Indians receiving Work visas and 1.2 lakh obtaining Student visas in 2023 alone, any changes to the visa policies could have far-reaching effects.

Relatives of four Indian nationals have claimed that foreign recruiters in Russia duped their family members into joining the Wagner Group, which is a private military company and was earlier involved in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. 22-year-old Mohammed Sufiyan, who belongs to the Indian state of Telangana, along with three other Indians hailing from Karnataka's Kalaburagi sent an SOS to their families after they were stranded in Russia and forced to join the Russian army in the fight against Ukraine, reported The Times Of India. A video was sent by Sufiyan to his family in which he was seen in army fatigue and claimed that they had been a victim of recruitment fraud. He added that the recruiters had sent them to Russia on December 23 after promising them jobs as security helpers, however, they were forced into fighting the Russia-Ukraine war against their will.
The United States has extended the work permit validity that will offer employment authorisation cards to specific non-immigrant categories, including Indian nationals waiting for green cards, for a duration of five years. This move is set to have a positive impact on a large number of Indians currently residing in the country.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in a statement said, "We are updating guidance in the Policy Manual to increase the maximum validity period to 5 years for initial and renewal Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) for certain noncitizens who are employment authorized incident to status or circumstance, including those admitted as refugees, paroled as refugees, and granted asylum, as well as recipients of withholding of removal."

"We are also increasing the maximum validity period to 5 years for initial and renewal EADs for certain noncitizens who must apply for employment authorization, including applicants for asylum or withholding of removal, adjustment of status under INA 245, and suspension of deportation or cancellation of removal," it added.

Israel-Hamas war: Second batch of 235 Indians arrives in India under Operation Ajay

Indian foreign ministry, in an update on nationals stranded in Israel, said that there are no casualties that have come to be known in the wake of the brutal Hamas attack on the West Asian nation. Indian Ministry of External Affairs also said that it is in touch with and aware of an injured Indian national who is in hospital and improving. "We haven’t heard of any casualty so far," MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said during the weekly presser.

"Around 18,000 Indians are in Israel. There is conflict going on and it is a matter of concern. Indians advised to follow advisories issued by our mission," he added.

He also noted that three to four Indians are in Gaza and the ministry is in touch with them.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday (Oct 11) announced the launching of 'Operation Ajay' to repatriate the nationals stuck in Israel and want to get back to their homeland.

Bagchi said, "As announced by EAM yesterday, Operation Ajay has been launched to facilitate the return from Israel of our citizens who wish to come back. The first charter flight will be reaching Tel Aviv later tonight to pick up the Indian citizens and is likely to return to India tomorrow morning..."

Giving updates about the ambitious mission, the MEA spokesperson said, "A charter flight will reach Tel Aviv today later in the evening. It is expected to get 230 passengers onboard. We have all options, but the role of IAF (in evacuation) can't be ruled out."

Will India designate Hamas as a terrorist organisation?

Responding to a question on this, the MEA official said, "This is a legal matter, it will have to be seen legally. But in our position, We have been very clear that this is a 'terrorist attack'".

India-Canada rift

Bagchi also detailed the current status of the ongoing rift between India and Canada after Canadian PM Justin Trudeau levelled grave allegations against India in light of the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

He said India "remain engaged with the Canadian authorities... to ensure the parity".

Reacting to Trudeau's recent comments about India, Bagchi made clear that the "core issue is the space Canada gives to the terrorist" and everything India is doing is "in compliance the with Vienna convention".

On Jaishankar reportedly holding "secret talks" with Canadian FM Melanie Joly, Bagchi said that he does not have any particular information to share but India is holding meetings with Canadian people on different levels.
