With the World Health Organisation (WHO) declaring the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic while expressing deep concern, the sporting events all around the world have taken a massive hit. With a plethora of tournaments such as La Liga, Australian Grand Prix, Serie A, ISSF Shooting World Cup, UEFA Euro 2020 and Road Safety World Series among a few getting either suspended or postponed, all eyes are on the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 which is scheduled to kickstart from March 29.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has now invited all the franchises for the IPL Governing Council meeting, which will be held on March 14 (Saturday), to decide the fate of the cash-rich tournament amid the coronavirus pandemic. The apex cricket board has mainly two major options on the cards - to either postpone the event or play it behind closed doors.&nbsp;

<h2>IPL franchises invited for IPL Governing Council meeting</h2>

When asked about whether the IPL franchises have been invited for the governing council meeting on Saturday, a BCCI source told ANI: "Yes, we have invited them for the meeting."&nbsp;

Moreover, the future of IPL 2020 is in major doubt as the Indian government has suspended all visas to India till April 15 which has put the participation of foreign players under dark clouds. "Yes, foreign players will not be available. We will discuss this and other issues at our Governing Council meeting scheduled for March 14," a source in the IPL Governing Council said. Even Cricket Australia (CA) has decided to step in and will decide on the participation of their players in IPL 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

The Sports Ministry has further asked all National Sports Federations (NSFs) including the BCCI to follow the health ministry's guidelines and avoid mass gatherings. On Thursday, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope had said that the IPL should happen behind closed doors or should be postponed. Even the MEA has advised against conducting IPL 2020 amid the coronavirus outbreak.&nbsp;

Furthermore, the remaining two ODIs of the ongoing India versus South Africa ODI series, to be played in Lucknow and Kolkata, will be played behind closed doors as the BCCI has decided to comply to Health Ministry's advisory to avoid large public gatherings.&nbsp;

IPL 2020 schedule: Date, time and venue of all the matches

With government cancelling all regular visas to India except diplomatic and official visas from March 13, the future of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 looks bleak. Foreign players, who were all set to take part in IPL 2020 will not be available till April 15 due to the cancellation of visas by the government. This comes as a massive news for the future of IPL 2020 with officials and state authorities already sweating about the future of the cash-rich tournament for the 13th edition. Now, all eyes will be on the IPL governing council meeting which is scheduled to be held on March 14. In India, there have been at least 71 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and that has made the government take major steps in a bid to curb the spreading of the novel virus.

"The foreign players who play in the IPL come under the Business Visa category. As per the government's directive, they can't come till April 15," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity. Furthermore, Sports Secretary Radhey Shyam Julaniya has said that all national federations, including the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), have been asked to follow Health ministry's advisory and avoid large gatherings.&nbsp;

Even the Paralympic Committee of India has decided to put stop all national and state championships, with an immediate effect, due to the novel coronavirus. So far, the BCCI has been adamant that IPL 2020 should go as per schedule but with the situation deteriorating with each passing day, big calls have to taken by the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and IPL chairman Brijesh Patel.

<h3>Close door matches in IPL 2020 - a possibility?</h3>

The IPL governing council meeting would decide the fate of the cash-rich tournament which is scheduled to kickstart from March 29 with the tournament opener set to be played between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. "All decisions will be taken by the GC in Mumbai," the source said. Meanwhile, matches behind closed doors is a realistic option being explored, at the moment, but final details are expected after the IPL governing council meeting on Saturday.

Earlier on Wednesday, &nbsp;Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Top said that IPL 2020 should be held behind closed doors with no spectators or else it should be postponed.&nbsp;

"In the current situation, it is not possible to schedule the IPL match in a packed stadium. We want it to happen in closed doors or postpone it for a later date. The final decision will be taken tomorrow. We all are of the view that IPL should not take place at this time as it can be very dangerous," Tope told reporters.

Coronavirus effect on cricket: Foreign players unavailable for IPL 2020 till April 15; BCCI, franchises mull options

West Indies legendary cricketer Chris Gayle, known for his power-hitting and dynamic attitude, spoke exclusively to Zee Business about his relationship with Indian skipper Virat Kohli and Indian fans.&nbsp;

Gayle calls himself the "Universe Boss", a brash tag in keeping with his big-hitting exploits in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

He&nbsp;is one of the most popular and followed overseas players and has a huge fan base in India. From his giant sixes to off-field&nbsp;joshes, he never failed to entertain the fans. Gayle also credited the support he gets&nbsp;as&nbsp;"the number one support".&nbsp;

The southpaw was part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) from 2011 to 2017 and played some match-winning knocks for the Virat-led team.&nbsp;

When Dirk Nannes was ruled out of the tournament, RCB named Gayle as his replacement, and he stayed there for almost six years. For RCB, Gayle played 85 matches and scored 3,163 runs.

"Kohli Kicked me out of RCB. So, the relationship is spoiled now (laughing)," Gayle gave a witty reply on being asked about his relationship with Indian skipper.&nbsp;

Gayle further spoke about the time he spent with the RCB team, "It's been good, some great moments playing together for RCB. I got to know him over the years."

West Indies legendary cricketer Chris Gayle, known for his power-hitting and dynamic attitude, spoke exclusively to Zee Business about his relationship with Indian skipper Virat Kohli and Indian fans. Gayle calls himself the "Universe Boss", a brash tag in keeping with his big-hitting exploits in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is one of the most popular and followed overseas players and has a huge fan base in India. From his giant sixes to off-field joshes, he never failed to entertain the fans. Gayle also credited the support he gets as "the number one support". The southpaw was part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) from 2011 to 2017 and played some match-winning knocks for the Virat-led team. When Dirk Nannes was ruled out of the tournament, RCB named Gayle as his replacement, and he stayed there for almost six years. For RCB, Gayle played 85 matches and scored 3,163 runs. "Kohli Kicked me out of RCB. So, the relationship is spoiled now (laughing)," Gayle gave a witty reply on being asked about his relationship with Indian skipper. Gayle further spoke about the time he spent with the RCB team, "It's been good, some great moments playing together for RCB. I got to know him over the years." IPL 2019 is over, Rohit Sharma- led- Mumbai went on to win their fourth IPL crown beating Chennai in the finals.

Dhoni's team would take some time to recover from this defeat as this narrow loss by 1 run is a bitter pill to swallow.

If we take a look at the last two seasons of the tournament, Chennai has proved that they are the best when it comes to making it to the finals of the tournament. They played back to back two finals just after being disgraced by a two-year ban (2016 and 2017).

In 2018, It was a dream comeback for Chennai Super Kings on the IPL horizon by winning the title.&nbsp;

For any sports fan, the thrill of following their favourite sports is not just contained to the live action of exciting matches and triumph of his or her favourite stars, but also in the stories that are retained and discussed over and over again with peers and future generations. &nbsp;

One such great story in the history of cricket will surely be the amazing comeback of Dhoni-led Chennai. It was a dark phase in the history of Indian cricket, marred by shadows of match-fixing and subversion of the spirit of cricket by personal interest and unabashed profiteering. Perhaps what hurt fans the most was that aspersions were cast over India's most successful captain - MS Dhoni.&nbsp;

Dhoni is blessed with one of the sharpest cricket brains. With his ability to read his opponent's&nbsp;mind and the game situation, Dhoni seems to be in a class of his own.

The roaring comeback of the franchise only goes to show that true genius will always find its way to the top, even though the worst of times. Of all the IPL franchises, Chennai is the only one which is without a true bona fide global superstar who is in his prime. MS Dhoni has passed his best, &nbsp;Raina can't find a place in the Indian team anymore, and a few fans across the world can put their hand on their heart and say that Du Plessis and Tahir will be sure starters in their world XI.

The success of Chennai is not owed to the brilliance of individual talents, but to the fact that this carefully picked squad clicks together in the moments that matter. Indeed, none of the Chennai players features in the list of top 5 run scorers this season, yet they reached the final.

When this Chennai squad came together after the 2018 IPL auction, it was mocked by many as "Dad's army" for the absence of young blood in its core. However, the team stands vindicated and have indeed proven that experience and a sensible approach to situations can make all the difference even in a format as fast moving as T20 cricket.

The roaring comeback of Chennai: True genius always finds it's way

IPL 2019: Players to watch out for in final clash between Chennai and Mumbai

Describing their narrow loss to Bangalore as a sweet and sour feeling, Kolkata's&nbsp;impact player <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=andre+russell">Andre Russell</a> has questioned his team's decision to send him lower down the order.&nbsp;

Chasing an imposing 214, Kolkata&nbsp;did not have the perfect start with 33/3 inside five overs and Robin Uthappa further complicated the equation consuming 20 deliveries for his nine runs.

So when Russell came into bat, 135 runs were needed off 49 balls but the West Indies big-hitter kept them in the hunt right till the last over, smashing nine sixes and two fours in a 25-ball 65.

"To lose by 10 runs, it's just two hits away. In the middle period, if we scored a bit faster we would definitely get the runs with even balls the spare," a disappointed Russell said at the post-match news conference.

Nitish Rana (85 not out off 46 balls) also plundered a barrage of boundaries in the death overs but it was too much in the end as Kolkata&nbsp;suffered their fourth defeat on the trot.

"Well batted to Nitish, but this is something that we definitely are disappointed and that's why I have a sweet-and-sour feeling."

Asked whether he should have batted at No 4, Russell made a 'no-comment' gesture putting his finger on the lips but went on to explain that the team should have been "more flexible".

"I believe that (I should have batted at No 4)... Honestly, I think sometimes you have to flexible as a team. Looking at the make-up of our team, I would not mind going to bat at No 4, when I am at the crease, Virat Kohli is going to bowl his best bowlers to get me out. And those best bowlers will have less overs remaining in the back end", he said.&nbsp;

"So even if I score 60 off 25 balls, and give the team that the early pump then bowlers like Dale Steyn will have only one over left at the death, or they may bowl out..." he said.

"I think me going to bat early would definitely be a good thing for Kolkata. But with our make-up of the team, that's a good answer," Russell, who has scripted some near-possible wins for his team this season, said.&nbsp;

Chasing Bangalore's 206 in the first leg, Kolkata needed 53 runs off last three overs but <a href="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/twitterati-compare-andre-russell-to-baahubali-thanos-and-more-see-pics-209254&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=0ahUKEwi9pNqH0N7hAhWr7XMBHbjpArg4KBAWCAUwAA&amp;client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;usg=AOvVaw0zIjzW8jJPT77UzyPvlUSU">Russell's assault had ensured that they won by five balls to spare.</a>&nbsp;

An identical scenario was seen in their opening match against Sunrisers Hyderabad where too Russell's blitzkrieg had sealed the issue for KKR.

"One over can make a big difference in T20 cricket. The momentum that we have in the last partnership between myself and Nitish, I hope that we can actually learn from this and how we can give the guys the belief that it doesn't matter if we are chasing 220, we still can do it."

The Russell-Rana partnership was worth 118 runs off just 48 balls and the Jamaican said they were feeling positive in the middle.

"When I went to bat, Nitish came to me and said what I think. I said 'I bat one way -- and it's positive'.

So if the first ball is in my court, I don't need to see what's happening. So to go out and chase 14-15 an over is not the best way you want to start as a batsman but I'm used to those conditions and situation."&nbsp;

He, however, said that they should have restricted the Virat Kohli-led side&nbsp;for less than 200.

The Windies cricketer has been in blazing form and is the leading six-hitter of this season with 39 to his credit. He also sits fourth in the run-getters tally with 377 runs at an average of 75.40 with an astonishing strike rate of 220.46.

The secret to his top form is going with a clear mindset, Russell said.

"I'm not afraid to get out. I mean, this is cricket, it won't be the first or the last. So a clear mindset has allowed me to do what I'm doing now."

Russell upset, questions Kolkata decision to send him lower down the order

Pacer Navdeep Saini, who is among India's standbys for the World Cup, says he is ready for his big break in the mega event should the need arises.&nbsp;

After attracting selectors' attention with a splendid season for Delhi in domestic cricket, the 26-year-old has impressed with his pace and bounce for Bangalore in the IPL.

The uncapped pacer is the sole bowler among the standbys with the others being Ambati Rayudu and Rishabh Pant. Saini will also be travelling with the World Cup squad as one of the four net bowlers alongside Khaeel Ahmed, Avesh Khan and Deepak Chahar.

"Absolutely (I'm ready)... The confidence of doing well in IPL will give me a big boost. If I get a chance in World Cup, I hope to do well," the shy lad from Haryana told reporters after <a href="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/kohli-credits-game-changer-moeen-after-bangalore-win-211986&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjE4_GYyt7hAhUG3Y8KHbRjDbQQFggNMAM&amp;client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;usg=AOvVaw1kUdckQgZ3XPE-KdiSSl0s">Bangalore's 10-run win</a> over Kolkata&nbsp;at the Eden Gardens here on Friday.

On his World Cup preparation, he said: "We talk during the matches but the most important thing is to pay full attention at the nets. If you do well at the nets, you will do well in a match as well.

"My dad has always told me to give your 110 per cent effort wherever you play. I'm putting in that extra effort always in practice session and in a match."

Saini is also gaining from the vast experience of South African great Dale Steyn who has come on board as a replacement for Nathan Coulter-Nile.
"I had a discussion with him on the eve of the match. He just told me to bowl the same way and not try anything different," Saini said.

Saini returned with figures 1/31 taking the prized-scalp of the explosive&nbsp;Sunil Narine.

Impressed with the bounce at Eden Gardens, he said: "I have bowled on other wickets but never generated this kind of bounce anywhere. The plan was to bowl length deliveries as I was getting that extra bounce.&nbsp;

"Against (Andre) Russell, the strategy was to hit the deck hard to generate a bit of extra bounce," he said of their strategy against the West Indies big-hitter who had threatened to script yet another near-impossible win with his brutal assault of 65 from 25 balls.

In the first leg at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Russell had sealed a 206-run chase with five balls to spare and the memories had come to haunt Bangalore&nbsp;while defending 214.

"Yes it was very much like the first leg match. But we wanted to execute our plans in a better way at the death. It was about out-thinking the batsmen. We wanted to go one step ahead," he said as Bangalore&nbsp;bowlers Moeen Ali and Marcus Stoinis held nerves in the final two overs to get their team over the line.

IPL 2019: Match preview of Hyderabad vs Bangalore and Chennai vs Rajasthan

The twelfth edition of Indian Premier League has started, the level of madness is at its peak and fans are going crazy to support their favourite teams and players.&nbsp;

When it comes to cricket, Indians let their emotions rule their decisions just like after they blasted Ravichandran Ashwin's 'mankading' of Jos Buttler.&nbsp;

The incident happened in an IPL match between Punjab and Rajasthan when Ashwin ran out Rajasthan's Jos Buttler, who was at the non-strikers' end, without giving him any warning.&nbsp;

Buttler's dismissal changed the course of game and Punjab registered a win and earned two crucial points. The stature of a team is analysed on the basis of winning or losing, especially in IPL.&nbsp;

Ashwin saw an opportunity and used it. He does not have to explain why he ran out the Englishman.&nbsp;

Though he said, "On my part, it was very instinctive and it wasn't planned or anything like that. It's there within the rules of the game."&nbsp;

And he is right, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which is the custodian of cricket laws, had made subtle changes to the rules in 2017 on running out of non-strikers by bowlers in their run-up.&nbsp;

The law gives the bowler the right to run out the non-striker when he is about to deliver the ball.&nbsp;

The rule clearly states, "If the non-striker is out of his/her ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out."&nbsp;

If it is legally correct and the decision was made by the third umpire then it is in the spirit of game and debate should have ended on the ground itself.&nbsp;

The third umpire had the authority to declare the ball dead but he did not because Ashwin's call was legal. &nbsp;

Imagine what will happen if a wicket-keeper starts giving warnings to the batsmen for being out of the crease just to uphold the spirit of the game.&nbsp;

No, that's not possible and will never happen.&nbsp;

Ashwin has earned his reputation for contribution to Indian national team and he will be remembered for that.&nbsp;

The cricket fraternity is, however, divided on the 'mankading' incident. Spin legend Shane Warne even labelled it as "disgraceful" and against the spirit of the game.&nbsp;

The spectators need to understand that the spirit of the game is compromised over cheating, humiliating sledging, match-fixing, physical assault, etc. not because of playing the game according to the law mandating by the ICC.&nbsp;

And when it comes to the spirit of the game, Warne must remember the number of times the Aussies have crossed the red line.&nbsp;

The twelfth edition of Indian Premier League has started, the level of madness is at its peak and fans are going crazy to support their favourite teams and players. When it comes to cricket, Indians let their emotions rule their decisions just like after they blasted Ravichandran Ashwin's 'mankading' of Jos Buttler. The incident happened in an IPL match between Punjab and Rajasthan when Ashwin ran out Rajasthan's Jos Buttler, who was at the non-strikers' end, without giving him any warning. Buttler's dismissal changed the course of game and Punjab registered a win and earned two crucial points. The stature of a team is analysed on the basis of winning or losing, especially in IPL. Ashwin saw an opportunity and used it. He does not have to explain why he ran out the Englishman. Though he said, "On my part, it was very instinctive and it wasn't planned or anything like that. It's there within the rules of the game." And he is right, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which is the custodian of cricket laws, had made subtle changes to the rules in 2017 on running out of non-strikers by bowlers in their run-up. The law gives the bowler the right to run out the non-striker when he is about to deliver the ball. The rule clearly states, "If the non-striker is out of his/her ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out." If it is legally correct and the decision was made by the third umpire then it is in the spirit of game and debate should have ended on the ground itself. The third umpire had the authority to declare the ball dead but he did not because Ashwin's call was legal. Imagine what will happen if a wicket-keeper starts giving warnings to the batsmen for being out of the crease just to uphold the spirit of the game. No, that's not possible and will never happen. Ashwin has earned his reputation for contribution to Indian national team and he will be remembered for that. The cricket fraternity is, however, divided on the 'mankading' incident. Spin legend Shane Warne even labelled it as "disgraceful" and against the spirit of the game. The spectators need to understand that the spirit of the game is compromised over cheating, humiliating sledging, match-fixing, physical assault, etc. not because of playing the game according to the law mandating by the ICC. And when it comes to the spirit of the game, Warne must remember the number of times the Aussies have crossed the red line. IPL 2019: Amid Ashwin's 'Mankad' controversy, Punjab set to face Kolkata at Eden Gardens

Australian cricketer David Warner made a stupendous Indian Premier League comeback with a scintillating 85, helping Hyderabad reach a challenging 181/3 in their campaign opener.&nbsp;

But unfortunately, the Orage Army failed to defend and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ipl-2019-andre-russell-steals-thrilling-win-for-kolkata-against-hyderabad-205352">lost the match to Dinesh Karthik-led Kolkata</a>.&nbsp;

Putting behind the embarrassing ball-tampering scandal, that kept him out last year, the Aussie smashed three sixes and nine boundaries in his 53-ball knock.&nbsp;

His produced an entertaining performance at the Eden Gardens and earned praises for his stunning comeback. But it was one of his big sixes that really caught spectators' eye.&nbsp;

While playing the 32-year-old launched one over the ropes only for it to crash into a cameraman&nbsp;but luckily he was unhurt.&nbsp;

"This has been absolutely bludgeoned. And hit our cameraman as well – what’s he doing?" one of the commentators said.

Another said, "He’s got to duck. He wasn’t even looking. Get a helmet on son."
