Terming corruption, poverty and illiteracy as the greatest challenges, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called for special initiatives to end all such ills in the next five years with the pledge of &#39;Karenge Aur Kar Ke Rahenge&#39; (We will do and surely do). 
 
Addressing the Lok Sabha on the 75th anniversary of the Quit India movement, the Prime Minister said from 2017 to 2022 when India turns 75, there is a need to create the same spirit that existed between 1942 and 1947. 
 
He said the menace of corruption has adversely impacted the development journey of the country and has eaten the polity from the inside. 
 
Corruption, poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition are the greatest challenges that India now needs to overcome and a common resolve is needed for this, he said, adding &quot;We need to bring a positive change in this regard.&quot; 
 
&quot;In 1942, the clarion call was &#39;Karenge Ya Marenge&#39; (Do or Die) - today it is &#39;Karenge Aur Kar Ke Rahenge.&#39; The next five years should also be about &#39;Sankalp Se Siddhi&#39;, a resolve which will lead us to accomplishment,&quot; Modi said. 
 
He said in the next five years till 2022, India must try to bring positive changes so that it can become inspiration for many other nations. 
 
India&#39;s freedom from colonial rule was not only about India, but a defining moment in ending colonialism in other parts of the world too, the Prime Minister said. 
 
He said from 1857 to 1942, the move towards freedom was incremental, but the years from 1942 to 1947, were transformative and delivered on the objective. 
 
&quot;In 1942, conditions internationally became favourable for India to get independence. Today again, the global conditions are favourable for India,&quot; he said. 
 
He urged the MPs to rise above differences and join in a common effort to create an India of the dreams of the freedom fighters in the next five years, from 2017 to 2022. 
 
The Prime Minister specially remembered the role of women during the freedom struggle, saying they can add immense strength to the common objectives even today. 
 
He said the Indian freedom struggle witnessed participation from a wide range of individuals over several years, specially after 1942 responding to the Mahatma Gandhi&#39;s clarion call of &#39;Do or Die&#39;. 
 
Modi recalled that even as many senior leaders like Mahatma Gandhi were jailed at the beginning of the Quit India movement, a new generation of leaders emerged to fill the vacuum and take the movement forward. 
 
&quot;The Quit India movement marked the rise of a new leadership. They supported Mahatma Gandhi during the movement,&quot; he said. 
 
Modi said the recollection of movements such as the Quit India was a source of inspiration and the current generation has a responsibility of passing on the legacy of such movements to the future generations. 
 
&quot;We remember the Quit India movement. Remembering such movements gives us strength as a nation,&quot; he said. 
 
During his nearly 30 minutes meeting, he remembered the role played by different leaders in different period of times which include Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Jai Prakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia, Chandrashekar Azad and Raju Guru. 
 
He said during the Quit India movement, all parts of the country, all communities, farmers, labourers, teachers and others came together with the thought of &quot;now or never&quot;. 
 
Modi said Gandhi had said that he would not be satisfied unless the country gets full freedom but never left the path of non-violence. 
 
He also referred to the enactment of the GST Act saying the way the political parties and state governments had extended support to the legislation, a similar approach would be taken by all concerned to resolve the problems of the country. 
 
The Prime Minister said the freedom struggle went through several phases and recalled various leaders and movements that emerged at various points since 1857.

Quit India movement marked the rise of new leadership: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won the online reader&#39;s poll for TIME Person of the Year 2016, beating out other world leaders like US President-elect Donald Trump, incumbent US leader Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Modi won with 18 per cent of the vote when the poll closed last night, getting significantly more votes than his closest contenders, including Obama, Trump and Wikileaks Founder Julian Assange, who all received 7 per cent of the &#39;yes&#39; vote.

Modi was also placed far ahead of other prominent figures of this year, like Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (2 per cent) and US Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton (4 per cent), Time said.

Time&#39;s editors will decide the final Person of the Year later this week, but the online poll results provide a look at how the world sees these figures and Modi emerged as the most influential figure in 2016, according to the online poll. 
Time said the reader poll is an &quot;important window&quot; into who they think most shaped 2016.

It is for the second time that Modi has won the online readers&#39; poll for Time Person of the Year title, securing the honour in 2014, when he had got more than 16 per cent of the almost five million votes cast.

For the fourth year in a row, Modi is among the contenders for Time&#39;s &#39;Person of the Year&#39; honour, which the US publication bestows every year to the one &quot;who has most influenced the news and our world in the past year, for good or ill&quot;.

The court has also asked the Centre to take immediate measures to alleviate the hardships and sufferings of the common man.

&quot;We will not be granting any stay,&quot; a bench comprising Chief Justice T S Thakur and D Y Chandrachud said.

The remarks were made after some advocates insisted on a stay.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for one of the petitioners, however, said he was not asking for a stay on the notification but seeking answers from the government about the steps taken to remove public inconvenience.

Attorney General (AG) Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the Centre, outlined the idea behind demonetisation and said large number of fake currency has been used to finance terrorism in various parts of the country including in Jammu and Kashmir and northeastern states.

He, however, agreed with the bench that some inconvenience to common citizens occurs as this kind of &quot;surgical strike&quot; is bound to have &quot;some kind of collateral damage&quot;.

The bench asked Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi to file an affidavit about the measures already undertaken by the government and the RBI to minimise public inconvenience and also the steps likely to be undertaken in future.

Without issuing any notice to the Centre or the RBI, the bench posted the matter for further hearing on November 25.

India: Banks closed today, queues get longer at ATMs

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with senior ministers past midnight today to review demonetisation and its impact.

The meeting at Prime Minister&#39;s residence was attended by Indian home minister Rajnath Singh, finance minister Arun Jaitley, I&amp;B Minister Venkaiah Naidu, power, coal and mines minister Piyush Goyal and top officials of the Finance ministry.

The meeting came amid continuing chaos and growing public anger across the country over limited cash availability following the surprise demonetisation of two higher value currency notes by Modi.

There was little respite for cash-starved people queueing up outside banks and ATMs yesterday, with branches witnessing unprecedented rush since early morning and leading to arguments and scuffles.

The weekly limit of Rs 20,000 for withdrawal from bank counters has been increased to Rs 24,000. The maximum limit of Rs 10,000 per day on such withdrawals has been removed, the ministry said in a statement.&nbsp;

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with senior ministers past midnight today to review demonetisation and its impact. The meeting at Prime Minister's residence was attended by Indian home minister Rajnath Singh, finance minister Arun Jaitley, I&B Minister Venkaiah Naidu, power, coal and mines minister Piyush Goyal and top officials of the Finance ministry. The meeting came amid continuing chaos and growing public anger across the country over limited cash availability following the surprise demonetisation of two higher value currency notes by Modi. There was little respite for cash-starved people queueing up outside banks and ATMs yesterday, with branches witnessing unprecedented rush since early morning and leading to arguments and scuffles. India: PM holds late-night meeting to review demonetisation, impact

Police have asked commuters to avoid major roads in Gurgaon as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the city in the evening to inaugurate Haryana&rsquo;s golden jubilee celebrations.&nbsp;

Tuesday has been declared a public holiday in India&rsquo;s northern city of Gurgaon as the state of Haryana celebrates 50 years of its formation.

All government offices, schools and colleges in Gurgaon will remain shut on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The Times of India reported the district administration had earlier issued an advisory to private firms, including multinationals, requesting them to either declare the day off or allow their employees to work from home.

Some diversion and restrictions have been made from the security point of view as along with the Prime Minister and Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar would be attending the function at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium, a senior police official told news agency PTI.

Traffic restrictions will start at 2 pm local time (0830 hours GMT)&nbsp;on Tuesday till late midnight, PTI reported.&nbsp;

India's Millennium City gets public holiday as PM Modi visits town

India&#39;s Central Information Commission (CIC) has sought files related to foreign travels of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the external affairs ministry (MEA). The MEA had refused to answer a Right to Information (RTI) query requesting access to these documents citing security concerns.

Commodore (retired) Lokesh Batra had sought these details to assess the expenditure incurred Prime Minister Narendra Modi&#39;s foreign travels.

Chief information commissioner Radha Krishna Mathur directed the MEA to peruse the files to ascertain whether there were any security concerns in the records on the basis of which information can be denied. &quot;The Commission observed that without perusal of the file&nbsp;it cannot be decided that whether the sought for information contains security related information,&quot; Mathur said, directing the ministry to produce one representative file before it.

Batra told the CIC that the case involved&nbsp;substantive public interest as the bailout amount being given to Air India, reported to be in thousands of crores of rupees, is tax-payers&#39; money. He said his RTI application sought information on four points -- details of expenses incurred on air travel during foreign visits of the incumbent Prime Minister and former prime ministers, the laid-down instructions, procedure&nbsp;involved in charting flights for PM&#39;s foreign visits and later filing &#39;flight returns&#39; and raising invoices, and clearance of bills on completion of the visit, copy of bills, etc.

Batra told the Commission that the website of the Prime Minister&#39;s Office (PMO), as on September 13, 2016, was showing that the bills were under process for payment, or were not received for journeys undertaken by the PM between June 15, 2014 and September 8, 2016.

He said there is a need for reforms by understanding the causes of long delays in payments to Air India. In its response, MEA told Batra that the details of PM&#39;s flight expenses contained information with security implications and were exempted from disclosure under section 8(1)(g) of the RTI Act.

The ministry said in view of security reasons, the file inspection by the appellant cannot be allowed.
