A recent report by the United Nations&nbsp;has claimed that more than half of India's total population (55.6 per cent) is unable to afford a healthy diet. In 2017, the proportion of the population not being able to afford a healthy diet in India was 69.5 per cent, which reduced further to 57.1 per cent in 2019 before witnessing an uptick (61.2 per cent) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the numbers have steadily declined.&nbsp;

The data has been presented by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)&nbsp;in its&nbsp;State of Food&nbsp;Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report, which was&nbsp;jointly published&nbsp;with four other UN agencies, including&nbsp;UNICEF.

"A healthy diet comprises four key aspects: diversity (within and across food groups), adequacy (sufficiency of all essential nutrients compared to requirements), moderation (foods and nutrients that are related to poor health outcomes) and balance (energy and macronutrient intake)," the report described.&nbsp;

The study used the cost of a healthy diet (CoHD) indicator and compared it to national income distributions to estimate the prevalence of unaffordability and the number of people unable to afford such a diet.&nbsp;

"In Asia, the average CoHD rose from 3.84 PPP dollars in 2021 to 4.20 PPP dollars, with Eastern Asia and Southern Asia recording the highest average CoHD at 5.34 PPP dollars and 4.28 PPP dollars, respectively," the report noted.&nbsp;

Responding to a question by PTI on population projections for India, Senior Population Affairs Officer, Population Division, UN DESA Clare Menozzi said at a press conference that "India is currently the largest country in the world in terms of population, and it is projected to stay so throughout the century. The population is currently estimated at 1.45 billion, and it's supposed to increase further" to 1.69 billion.

It said that the quality of education is a major component that puts the population at a disadvantage.

Moody’s compared India’s current education outcome levels to those of Pakistan and Bangladesh, emphasising that better educational outcomes will help nations like India avoid potential job losses from digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence in the long run, especially in services like call centres and BPOs.

The rating agency stated in a report on sovereigns in South and Southeast Asia titled “Population growth alone will not drive credit benefits for emerging economies” that it anticipates continued population growth in the region to support economic expansion because the proportion of people who are working age will remain high relative to the proportion of people who are younger and older.

“However, the availability and scale of labour inputs alone will not drive materially stronger economic strength or better fiscal outcomes. Other conditions such as strong education and quality infrastructure are also key to reaping the benefits,” The Hindu quoted the report as saying.

Moody’s report also mentioned that there exists a significant gap in the quality of education between Pakistan, Bangladesh and India in comparison to China and other countries in South East Asia. This leads to labour force “participation imbalances.”

The rating agency stated in a report on sovereigns in South and Southeast Asia titled “Population growth alone will not drive credit benefits for emerging economies” that it anticipates continued population growth in the region to support economic expansion because the proportion of people who are working age will remain high relative to the proportion of people who are younger and older. “However, the availability and scale of labour inputs alone will not drive materially stronger economic strength or better fiscal outcomes. Other conditions such as strong education and quality infrastructure are also key to reaping the benefits,” The Hindu quoted the report as saying. As India attains the 'world's biggest population' title, a few simple questions beg for answers. What does it mean to have such a population? Is it good or bad? Are we doomed or is this the beginning of something special? The questions might be simple but the answer certainly is not straightforward - one that can be painted with only black or white hues. Though the connotations of world's most populous nation are often perceived as negative, it also brings with itself a set of remarkable opportunities. The opportunities India is yet to compile its own population data as it has not conducted a census since 2011. The one supposed to happen in 2021 was delayed due to the Covid pandemic and the government does not seem particularly enthused to get the census campaign back on track. However, according to a Time Magazine report, nearly half the population of India (650 million people) is below the age of 25 - meaning the country won't be hitting its peak until 2065. Adults aged 65 and older comprise only seven per cent of population compared with 14 per cent in China and 18 per cent in the US. The share of Indians who are 65 and older is likely to remain under 20 per cent until 2063 and will not approach 30 per cent until 2100, under the UN’s medium variant projections. Considering that the younger population errs on the side of caution and only procreates one or two children per couple, the population will only stabilise after the said year. Until then, India and its mostly young populace could help put the country's economic future into overdrive. The economy can be boosted up to levels hitherto unseen. India can create industries and provide services in new fields, all the while sustaining a healthy growth rate. Even in a post-pandemic world, India is one of the few bright spots economically, generating growth rates much higher than nations across the globe. Numerous reports have predicted India and China to lead the economic growth story in the coming decades. India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is already taking financial decisions that it may not have taken earlier. It is trading with Russia to buy oil without the use of the US dollar, it has created its own nexus of power in the Indio-pacific by playing a key part in militarising the Quad grouping. In fact, one of the biggest benefits of India's population is the ability it imparts to its leaders to put their foot down and get their way in major political, financial and geopolitical decisions. However, having the biggest share of the population should automatically bolster India's claim for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council (UNSC). The challenges It is not to say that increase in population will not come with its own set of challenges. To unlock the true potential of India's young population to drive the economic chariot, the country's government will have to massively focus on addressing core problems like healthcare, education, infrastructure and food availability. The division of resources will be a major headache and the problem could be exacerbated by climate change. Then, there is a lack of employment. only five per cent of the workforce currently comes under the formally skilled bracket. Schools, and universities will have to step up majorly so that new avenues of employment are generated for the youth. If India's overwhelming majority of youth sits without a job, it will be a wastage of resources and human capital. Something India can ill-afford to do. China took evasive measures such as imposing the one-child rule that led to steep decline in numbers, forcing the government to take a 180 on the issue. Increasing the education levels ought to suffice as aware people are much more likely to limit the number of offspring they want. Moreover, the total fertility rate is already going down and in the coming years, it may automatically offset the numbers. The National Family Health 5 Survey (2019-21) found that India attained a Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 2.0 for the first time, less than the replacement level of 2.1, falling from 2.2 in NFHS 4 (2015-16). Countries like Japan and Italy have been witnessing an alarming drop in population levels which has caused serious concerns. Thus, trying to solve a problem that does not really exist for India would be a huge blunder. She added, "Yet, population numbers should not trigger anxiety or create alarm. Instead, they should be seen as a symbol of progress, development, and aspirations if individual rights and choices are being upheld."&nbsp;

The report also highlighted the issues of women's decreased right to bodily autonomy. According to the SWOP report, 44 per cent of partnered women and girls in 68 reporting countries do not have the right to make informed decisions about their bodies on matters of sex, contraception and seeking health care. Close to 257 million women worldwide have an unmet need for safe, reliable contraception.&nbsp;

Poonam Muttreja, Executive Director at Population Foundation of India, said in a statement: "So many women lack control over their bodies, including the right to have children - to decide when they want to have them and how many."&nbsp;

The UNFPA has recommended that governments must create policies with "gender equality and rights at their heart, such as parental leave programmes, child tax credits, policies that promote gender equality in the workplace, and universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights."&nbsp;

The problems and inequalities between the genders are much greater in rural India. Ten years ago, the literacy rate for women in rural areas was only 58.8 per cent, while the national average was 65.46 per cent. Whereas the national average for men was over 82 per cent.

For Indian families in rural areas, girls play the role of a second mother by doing household work. This can discourage them from going to school.

In a rare frank appraisal, four researchers from the PBOC said the country should not interfere with people's ability to have children or it will be too late to reverse the economic impact of a declining population.

Since 2016, Chinese couples have been allowed to have two children.

"We should not hesitate and wait for the effects of existing birth policies," the researchers said in a working paper published early this week.

"The birth liberalisation should happen now when there are some residents who still want to have children but can't. It's useless to liberalise it when no one wants to have children," it said.

After implementing the controversial one-child policy for over three decades, China is facing a demographic crisis with a rapidly ageing population over 60 years, which according to official figures, has increased to 420 million in 2019.

The two-child policy, which was implemented from 2016 failed to make an impact on the low birth rates as the number of newborns dropped by two million in 2018.

China as a whole saw 580,000 fewer new-borns in 2019 compared to 2018, marking the third consecutive year of decline since the implementation of the universal two-child policy in the mainland, according to official data.

According to China's statistics bureau, the country had a population of 1.34 billion in 2010 with an annual growth rate of 0.57 per cent, down from 1.07 per cent a decade earlier.

Mr Cai said the number of Chinese of working age had been in decline since 2010, which had mainly affected the supply side of the economy.

He said if people of working age were faced with the additional financial burden of looking after an elderly relative while trying to raise a family it would make them more likely to save than consume.

"The cost of childbearing, parenting and education are the biggest constraints on young couples," Mr Cai said.

"For the elderly, we need to increase their labour participation and social security benefits so that they can contribute to and share in the economic growth, while also maintaining consumer demand," he said.

"These forecasts suggest good news for the environment, with less stress on food production systems and lower carbon emissions, as well as a significant economic opportunity for parts of sub-Saharan Africa," lead author Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, told AFP.

"However, most countries outside of Africa will see shrinking workforces and inverting population pyramids, which will have profound negative consequences for the economy."

For high-income countries in this category, the best solutions for sustaining population levels and economic growth will be flexible immigration policies and social support for families who want children, the study concluded.

"However, in the face of the declining population there is a very real danger that some countries might consider policies that restrict access to reproductive health services, with potentially devastating consequences," Murray cautioned.

"It is imperative that women's freedom and rights are at the top of every government's development agenda."

Social services and healthcare systems will need to be overhauled to accommodate much older populations.

As fertility falls and life expectancy increases worldwide, the number of children under five is forecast to decline by more than 40 per cent, from 681 million in 2017 to 401 million in 2100, the study found.

At the other end of the spectrum, 2.37 billion people — more than a quarter of the global population — will be over 65 years old by then.

Those over 80 will balloon from about 140 million today to 866 million.

Sharp declines in the number and proportion of the working-age population will also pose huge challenges in many countries.

"Societies will struggle to grow with fewer workers and taxpayers," noted Stein Emil Vollset, a professor at the IHME.

The number of people of working age in China, for example, will plummet from about 950 million today to just over 350 million by the end of the century — a 62 per cent drop.

The decline in India is projected to be less steep, from 762 to 578 million.

In Nigeria, by contrast, the active labour force will expand from 86 million today to more than 450 million in 2100.

These tectonic shifts will also reshuffle the pecking order in terms of economic clout, the researchers forecast.

By 2050, China's gross domestic product will overtake that of the United States, but fall back into second place by 2100, they predict.

India's GDP will rise to take the number three spot, while Japan, Germany, France and the UK will stay among the world's 10 largest economies.

Brazil is projected to fall in ranking from eighth today to 13th, and Russia from the number 10 spot to 14th. Historical powers Italy and Spain, meanwhile, declined from the top 15 to 25th and 28th, respectively.

Indonesia could become the 12th largest economy globally, while Nigeria — currently 28th — is projected to crack the top 10.

"By the end of the century, the world will be multipolar, with India, Nigeria, China and the United States the dominant powers," said Richard Horton, describing the study as outlining "radical shifts in geopolitical power."

Until now, the United Nations — which forecasts 8.5, 9.7 and 10.9 billion people in 2030, 2050 and 2100, respectively — has virtually had a monopoly in projecting global population.

The difference between the UN and IHME figures hinges crucially on fertility rates. The so-called "replacement rate" for a stable population is 2.1 births per woman.

UN calculations assume that countries with low fertility today will see those rates increase, on average, to about 1.8 children per woman over time, said Murray.

"Our analysis suggests that as women become more educated and have access to reproductive health services, they choose to have less than 1.5 children on average," he explained by email.

The world's population could reach its peak around the end of the current century, at a level of nearly 11 billion, according to the study, which presents the main results of the 26th round of the UN's global population estimates, projections and global demographic patterns.

The new report said that more than half of the projected increase in the global population up to 2050 will be concentrated in just nine countries, led by India and followed by Nigeria, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Indonesia, Egypt and the US.

The report highlighted that "disparate population growth rates" among the world's largest countries will re-order their ranking by size.

India is projected to surpass China as the world's most populous country around 2027, according to current projections made in the report.

"India is expected to add nearly 273 million people between 2019 and 2050, while the population of Nigeria is projected to grow by 200 million. Together, these two countries could account for 23 per cent of the global population increase to 2050," the report said.

Previous UN projections had estimated that India will surpass China as the world's most populous country as early as 2022. The 2017 world population report, released by the UN two years ago, had estimated that the population of India will surpass that of China's by around 2024. In its 24th round of estimates released in 2015, the UN had projected that India will become more populous than China by 2022.

China, with 1.43 billion people in 2019, and India, with 1.37 billion, have long been the two most populous countries of the world, comprising 19 and 18 per cent, respectively, of the global total in 2019. They are followed by the United States of America, with 329 million in 2019, and Indonesia, with 271 million, the 2019 report said.

The report said that after this re-ordering between 2019 and 2050, the ranking of the five largest countries is projected to be preserved through the end of the century, when India could remain the world's most populous country with nearly 1.5 billion inhabitants, followed by China with just under 1.1 billion, Nigeria with 733 million, the US with 434 million, and Pakistan with 403 million inhabitants.

It further said that in 2019, around 40 per cent of the world's population lives in intermediate-fertility countries, where women have on average between 2.1 and four births over a lifetime.

A growing number of countries are experiencing a reduction in population size. Since 2010, 27 countries or areas have experienced a reduction of one per cent or more in the size of their populations, caused by sustained low levels of fertility.

In China, the population is projected to decrease by 31.4 million, or around 2.2 per cent, between 2019 and 2050.

Further, life expectancy at birth for the world, which increased from 64.2 years in 1990 to 72.6 years in 2019, is expected to increase further to 77.1 years in 2050.

The report added that migration has become a major component of population change in some countries. Between 2010 and 2020, 14 countries or areas will see a net inflow of more than one million migrants, while 10 countries will see a net outflow of similar magnitude.

The report noted that if China could maintain this momentum in growth, China's fertility rate would return to a relatively safe level, the People's Daily reported.

The report came after Chinese demographers said China's three-year-old two child policy failed to make any impact on the low birth rate as the number of new-borns dropped by two million last year and the decline was expected to continue.
