The sources also said that though the exact number is not known, almost the same number of Chinese troops have been killed during the clashes in the Galwan Valley.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has blamed China for the incident and alleged that it tried to unilaterally change the status and "departed from the consensus to respect the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Galwan Valley".

Meanwhile, an alert has been issued in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts, adjoining Tibet, to take all precautionary measures to ensure security, the state government said on Tuesday.

It said the measures have been taken in the state to collect intelligence to plan the future of course of action. All state intelligence units have also been alerted in this regard, it added.

Moreover, bilateral ties with Nepal are at their worst and there appears to be little room for diplomacy. Recently, Nepal'slower house passed a map showing Indian territories of Lipulekh, Kalapani, Limpiyadhura as its own.

In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said Nepal’s artificial enlargement of claims is “not based on historical fact or evidence and is not tenable”.

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka remain India's friends, but these countries are trapped in China's “debt-trap diplomacy”.

There was a faceoff between Indian and Chinese troops last evening in the Galwan region near patrolling point number 14 in which there were&nbsp;casualties on both the sides.This has happened for the&nbsp;first time&nbsp;in atleast four decades.

On the Indian side atleast three armymen were killed in action. The casualties include 2 soldiers and a senior officer Colonel Santosh Babu, the commanding officer of the 16 Bihar regiment.

No firing is said to have taken place, it was a skirmish, a&nbsp;physical brawl.This is being called a result of six weeks of massive build-up.

Beijing is suggesting&nbsp;that India provoked it first. It accuses Indian troops of illegally crossing into Chinese territory.

The Chinese foreign ministry says that this was a&nbsp;''serious violation'' of the consensus reached during disengagement talks.

But China is yet to admit if it suffered any casualties. China warned India to prevent ''complicating&nbsp;the border situation''&nbsp;taking provocative and unilateral action.''

The Chinese army has a system of political commissars.&nbsp;These are officers who serve as the link between the party and the army.&nbsp;

They are responsible for political indoctrination&nbsp;and for motivating soldiers in combat situations.&nbsp;

According to&nbsp;sources the political commissar was instrumental in ratcheting up the tension and provoking this scuffle.

The Chinese troops constructed a temporary structure on indian side of the border, a&nbsp;clear violation of the consensus reached during the military-level talks.

The temporary structure was built somwhere along patrolling point number 14. Indian troops destroyed this structure yesterday.

The Chinese side returned in big numbers prepared for a faceoff. Colonel Santosh Babu and his batallion went ahead to block the Chinese incursion. A violent clash ensued, a number of soldiers apparently got pushed &nbsp;into the Galwan river.

The number of casualties is said to beyond three. As per sources atleast 15 soldiers are said to have been killed in action on the Chinese side.

India is much better prepared today to deal with a chinese offensive than it was at the time of Doklam..&nbsp;

Ther army has reportedly been placed on an 'orange alert', this is the second-highest level of alert, second only to the red alert.

It is usually placed in anticipation of a strike. A large-scale confrontation.

The army has sounded the orange alert several times in the past.&nbsp;Mostly after or in anticipation of terror attacks.

Dialogue is being given the top priority. India and China were engaged in marathon talks the entire day.

The PLA has been carrying out large scale military manoeuvres despite the two sides holding marathon talks for the last three days.

On June 5 the two sides held a virtual meeting. East Asia joint secretary Naveen Srivastava from India and Wu Jiang-Hao, Director General of Asian Affairs&nbsp;at the Chinese foreign ministry.

The two sides agreed to handle differences through peaceful discussion keeping in mind each other's sensitivities, concerns, and aspirations.

These are promises which the Chinese especially their state media are definitely not keeping. The Global Times says that Indian nationalists are desperately trying to smear and defame China. It says India's strategic and policy-making circles are in the hands of a small group who 'Hold negative views towards china' and that the ongoing standoff could continue before concrete resolutions are made.

This rhetoric has been on despite high-level military talks between the two sides. A meeting between the representatives of the Indian Army and the PLA was held in the Chushul-Moldo region on June 6. According to MEA, it took place ''cordial and positive atmosphere''.&nbsp; Both sides agreed to peacefully resolve the situation as per bilateral agreements.

They agreed that 'peace' and 'tranquillity' was essential for the overall development of bilateral relations. They promised to continue military and diplomatic engagements to resolve the situation.

This is largely a message of intent to diffuse tensions through diplomacy and dialogue but there are no specifics about what was really discussed. This meeting came on the back of at least 10 rounds of negotiations at the local level.

Negotiations with no concrete outcome. This one was supposed to be different. It was meant to settle the issue, at least temporarily, if not fully resolved.&nbsp;

To that extent, it seems to have fallen short as there is no sign of de-escalation from China's side. In fact, PLA's show of strength has only grown. The Chinese Army carried out massive manoeuvers featuring thousands of paratroopers in the north-west region. The Chinese state media has been trying to intimidate India with videos and editorials.

The aim should be to ease out tensions through diplomacy but given the threats and bluster, India's approach in dealing with the dragon needs to be firm.

This rhetoric has been on despite high-level military talks between the two sides. A meeting between the representatives of the Indian Army and the PLA was held in the Chushul-Moldo region on June 6. According to MEA, it took place ''cordial and positive atmosphere''. Both sides agreed to peacefully resolve the situation as per bilateral agreements. They agreed that 'peace' and 'tranquillity' was essential for the overall development of bilateral relations. They promised to continue military and diplomatic engagements to resolve the situation. This is largely a message of intent to diffuse tensions through diplomacy and dialogue but there are no specifics about what was really discussed. This meeting came on the back of at least 10 rounds of negotiations at the local level. Negotiations with no concrete outcome. This one was supposed to be different. It was meant to settle the issue, at least temporarily, if not fully resolved. To that extent, it seems to have fallen short as there is no sign of de-escalation from China's side. In fact, PLA's show of strength has only grown. The Chinese Army carried out massive manoeuvers featuring thousands of paratroopers in the north-west region. The Chinese state media has been trying to intimidate India with videos and editorials. The aim should be to ease out tensions through diplomacy but given the threats and bluster, India's approach in dealing with the dragon needs to be firm.

I want to assure people that leadership of the country is in strong hands and we will not compromise on India's pride and self-respect at any cost," the defence minister said.

Talking about decades-old border row with China, Singh said India wants its resolution as soon as possible, adding the military and diplomatic engagement between the two sides to end the current row continues.

"India's policy has been to not hurt anyone's dignity and honour. At the same time, we do not allow the country's honour and self-respect to be hurt.

On Gandhi's comments, Singh said the whole country should be united on such an issue and have faith in the capability of the armed forces.

"I cannot even imagine that any political leader will make such comments on an issue of the country's security.... As the defence minister, I will say whatever I have to say in Parliament," he said.

"Do not try to tell us (about our responsibility). There is a dispute between the two countries and the whole country should stand united," he added

Indian and Chinese troops were engaged in a month-long confrontation since May 5 following a violent clash in Pangong Tso which is turning out to be biggest military standoff after the 2017 Doklam episode.

In their first serious efforts to end the row, Lt General Harinder Singh, the general officer commanding of Leh-based 14 Corps, and Commander of the Tibet Military District Maj Gen Liu Lin held an extensive meeting on Saturday. However, it could not produce any tangible results.

GT, however, continues to regularly publish articles on the ‘African Swine Flu’. The whole African continent and its people are fair game for GT and the Chinese Communist Party. The belligerent puffery did not stop there and origins of the Wuhan virus began to be attributed by GT first to Italy, the UK, the US military, Thailand and even India in recent times! GT has been specialising in inflammatory and instigating editorials – whether it is against protestors in Hong Kong or on the current events surrounding the death of the African American – George Floyd. Yet, there was not a word of remembrance for Tiananmen on June 4 this year when the world marked its 31st anniversary. Not a word for the racial and religious persecution of Uyghurs. In diplomatic circles, a popular joke is – “ah, but if it is from GT, don’t bother”. Little wonder then, outside China, none takes GT’s editorials seriously. Rest assured, the Dragon’s breath smells foul every time it opens its mouth.

It says China has amassed high altitude weapons. The piece claims that the PLA expanded its firepower after the Doklam stand-off. It has a list of weaponry with tanks, helicopters, drones and howitzers. Some of the equipment was showcased at China's National Day military parade on October 1 last year.

China's state mouthpiece has been boasting about PLA's firepower at a time when its forces have invaded Indian territory&nbsp; 
while the piece doesn't say the advanced defence equipment has been deployed at the border.

It does indicate that it can be operationalised swiftly, such reports send a message that China won't back down from its territorial claims.

The PLA in recent weeks was behind the sinking of a Vietnamese fishing boat in the South China Sea, it harrassed a Malaysian offshore oli rig and moved around Taiwan's waters. China is also working with Pakistan to leverage the crisis. Recently, it agreed to help Pakistan build a dam in Pakistan occupied Kashmir(POK) and now its border provocations in Ladakh are only needling India further.
