Australia's Deputy Prime Minister and Defence minister Richard Marles will be in India next week.

It will be the first high-level visit from the country after the new Australian PM Anthony Albanese took charge last month. &nbsp;The new Australian defence minister will be in Delhi on 21st and 22nd and will hold talks with his counterpart Indian defence minister Rajnath Singh. &nbsp;

The visit of the deputy prime minister is seen as a continuation of the strong ties between New Delhi and Canberra despite the change of guard in the country.

Indian PM Modi and Australian PM had held bilateral talks in Tokyo on the sidelines of the Quad summit. After taking charge, the Australian minister has been to Singapore for the Shangri-La dialogue and later to Japan. At the Shangri-La Dialogue, he had said, "I look forward to visiting India soon to take forward the defence pillar of our comprehensive strategic partnership".

On the sideline of the Shangri-La Dialogue, he met South Korea's defence minister Lee Jong-sup, Japan's defence minister Kishi Nobuo, French defence minister Sébastien Lecornu and a number of other defence ministers from other countries including Canada, Fiji etc. He also participated in a trilateral with the American and Japanese defence ministers and held talks with Chinese defence minister Wei Fenghe. Australia&nbsp;along with many countries in the Indo Pacific including India have faced increased aggressive actions by China. &nbsp;

The visit is also a major outreach given the minister comes to India in less than a month since the new government took charge.

India and Australia have increased defence engagements. Both are part of the Malabar exercises, along with US, India and Japan.

Earlier this month India and Australia undertook maritime surveillance initiative in the Indian Ocean Region(IOR). A Royal Australian Air Force P-8A Poseidon aircraft was deployed in&nbsp;India under the initiative. Earlier this year an Indian P-8I aircraft was deployed in Darwin when both countries undertook coordinated maritime patrols in northern Australia for the first time.

In major outreach by Australia's new government, Deputy PM Marles to visit India

India and Australia will hold a virtual summit later this month led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian PM Scott Morrison. It is expected that a big announcement will be made during the meeting.

The last such virtual summit between the two&nbsp;leaders took place in June 2020. At that time, amid the covid crisis, it was the first such virtual summit PM Modi had with any foreign leader.

India's trade minister Piyush Goyal and his Australian counterpart Dan Tehan had met in Delhi last month and announced that the interim trade pact will be concluded in 30 days' time and will cover areas of interest for both countries. Both countries have decided to conclude a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement in 12-18 months' time.&nbsp;

In 2018-19, the trade between the two countries was around US$ 21 billion. Australia’s cumulative investment in India is about $10.74 billion whereas India’s total investment in Australia is $10.45 billion.&nbsp;

The India, Australia summit comes in the backdrop of fast-paced geopolitical changes with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, firming up of Quad grouping which includes India, Australia, US, and Japan, and an aggressive China in the Indo Pacific.

Both PM Modi, and Australian PM were part of a virtual Quad meet that took place earlier this month at the request of the Americans. The India, Australia summit will happen a few days after Japanese PM&nbsp;Fumio Kishida visits India on March 19. This will be the maiden visit of Fumio to India in his capacity as the Prime Minister.

While this is the second&nbsp;virtual summit, both leaders have met 4 times in per pandemic times. First on&nbsp;the sidelines of East Asia Summit (EAS) in Singapore in November of 2018, then on the sidelines of G20 in Osaka in June 2019, on the margins of G7 Summit in Biarritz in August 2019, and on the margins of EAS in Bangkok in November 2019.&nbsp;

Domestically the summit comes just a few months before Australia's federal elections. The elections are scheduled for the first half of 2022.

ScoMosas: Australian PM Scott Morrison engages in food diplomacy with PM Modi

India and Australia on Monday signed six memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in different fields including combating terrorism, civil aviation security, sports, health and medicine and satellite navigation.

The MoUs were signed after the delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull in New Delhi.

The six MoUs signed between both nations are Cooperation in Combating International Terrorism and Transnational Organised Crime, Promotion and Development of Cooperation in Civil Aviation Security, Cooperation in the field of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, Cooperation in Sports, Cooperation in the field of Health and Medicine and Implementation arrangement between ISRO and Geoscience Australia on Cooperation in Earth Observation and Satellite Navigation.

Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Turnbull said Australia will continue to ensure that they will provide outstanding opportunities for Indian students.

&quot;Not only cricket but commitment to democracy and rule of law connects the two nations. He appreciated the success as a largest democracy in the world. Research institutions of the two countries are collaborating in critical areas including health,&quot; he added.

Earlier in the day, the visiting dignitary was accorded a ceremonial reception at the forecourts of Rashtrapati Bhavan.&nbsp;

He also visited the Rajghat to pay floral tributes to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.

The two Prime Ministers also inaugurated the Nano-Techhnology Centre at Gurugram through video conference.
