Looks a pretty good surface. Looks like a decent surface, very hot, so I think it’ll come a little bit better under lights, so we’ll try to chase,” Gill said at the toss.&nbsp;Speaking on the 2027 ODI World Cup build-up, Gill said, “I think 20-odd matches to go before the World Cup starts, so I think this is the time to see what combination suits us the best and then give that combination as much time in the middle as possible.”&nbsp;“[On the playing XI] We are going with four bowlers and then two all-rounders with Reddy and Naman, who makes his debut.”&nbsp;Shai Hope, West Indies Captain -&nbsp;“Well, it (toss) doesn’t really matter now, does it? We’d have probably batted today,” Hope said after losing the toss.&nbsp;“It’s been a quick turnaround for us,” Hope said on the preparation. “We play a lot of cricket; different format from CPL, but it’s been going pretty well. I think the guys have been playing some good cricket in the last couple of years, just about for us now to come to India and try to replicate that.”&nbsp;On facing a potent Indian team, Hope said, “Yeah, for sure, and something I always mention, we want to play against the best teams in the world, and no better place to do it here in India. So, I think the guys are really looking forward to this challenge.&nbsp;Speaking on the playing XI, Hope noted, “We’ve got five bowlers: one all-rounder, three seam and two spin. So hopefully that combination is the right one for us today.”&nbsp;Meanwhile, a few of India’s ODI mainstays, including T20I captain Shreyas Iyer and keeper-batter Ishan Kishan, are away for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 in Japan. Yashasvi Jaiswal has to wait for his turn in the ODI team, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak suggested on the eve of the series opener against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday (Sep 27). With One-Day captain Shubman Gill ‘good to go’ after being hit on the elbow several times during the nets on Saturday (Sep 26), Jaiswal’s chances of making a return to 50-over cricket are down to zero. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli also set to be back for the first ODI, Jaiswal might have to wait longer for his chance.&nbsp;A Test mainstay, Jaiswal hasn’t been able to fix his spot in India’s white-ball sides due to intense competition at the top of the order. ‘No Unfair Treatment’: Kotak tells Jaiswal to wait for his turn in IND vs WI ODIs

Rohit Sharma-led India beat West Indies by five wickets in the series opener of the three ODIs, being held in the Caribbean island. With the 2023 ODI World Cup set to be held in October-November, in India, Rohit &amp; Co. are now left with&nbsp;only a handful of ODIs in the run-up to the mega event at home. Thus, the series versus the lowly-ranked West Indies is crucial in their preparations.&nbsp;

The Men in Blue stood tall and dominated proceedings in the first ODI, dismissing the Windies for a paltry 114 after opting to bowl first, and chased down the score in 22.5 overs. Ravindra Jadeja's three-fer and Kuldeep Yadav's 4 for 6 led the show for India before Ishan Kishan's 52 and unbeaten cameos from Jadeja-Rohit took India past the finish line.&nbsp;

During the run-chase, India shuffled their batting order as Ishan opened with Shubman Gill whereas Suryakumar Yadav, vice-captain Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur and Jadeja were also promoted. India's two experienced campaigners such as Virat Kohli and Rohit were demoted&nbsp;and Hitman explained the reason behind the move.&nbsp;

<h2>'We will keep trying these things whenever possible'</h2>

At the post-match presentation, Rohit revealed, "We wanted to give game time to the ODI guys who have come in, we will keep trying those things whenever possible. To restrict them to 115, we knew we could try these guys and give them a go. I don't think they'll get many chances like this."

Rohit came out to bat at No. 7 whereas Kohli didn't feature in the run-chase. On him batting at No. 7, the Indian captain pointed out, "I made my debut for India and was batting at number 7, reminded me of those days."

With Rohit and Kohli experienced enough, India is focusing on giving their middle and lower-order batters enough chances -- wherever available -- in the run-up to the ODI WC, which starts on October 05. While only Ishan (52) made full use of batting at the top, India will be happy with other middle and lower-order batters also being exposed in the middle. They will hope for more such chances where they can&nbsp;experiment&nbsp;in the upcoming ODIs.

The second and penultimate ODI kicks off on Saturday (July 29) as Rohit &amp; Co. will hope to claim&nbsp;an unassailable lead.

IND vs WI: Rohit Sharma explains why India shuffled their batting line-up in 1st ODI amid WC preparations

Rohit Sharma-led India demolished West Indies by five wickets in the series opener of the three-ODI series on Thursday (July 27) in Barbados. Opting to bowl first, India rode on Kuldeep Yadav's 4 for 6 and Ravindra Jadeja's 3 for 37 to dismiss Shai Hope-led Windies for a paltry 114 in 23 overs. In reply, India shuffled their batting order considerably and lost wickets at regular intervals but still won comfortably in 22.5 overs.

There was plenty to cheer for Team India in the ODI series opener. While the spin duo Kuldeep and Jadeja excelled, India's fielding was also up to the mark with Kohli pulling off a stunner. As Jadeja induced a big edge&nbsp;off Romario Shepherd, Kohli -- stationed at second slip -- reacted in a jiffy and plucked a one-handed stunner.&nbsp;&nbsp;Shubman Gill, who was at first slip, gave an unmissable reaction. Mohammed Siraj is heading back to India as part of the workload management as he won’t be part of the ODI set-up. Rohit Sharma’s men set to play West Indies in the three-match ODI series starting on Thursday, July 27 will be without the speedster as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wants to give the player a good rest before the World Cup and the Asia Cup. The BCCI won’t be naming a replacement and will return to India with Ravichandran Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, KS Bharat and Navdeep Saini.

<h2>Siraj to miss ODI series</h2>

The BCCI opted to rest Siraj after the Test series as he was the first-choice bowler after Mohammed Shami. Siraj has been playing consistent cricket in the last few months which has seen him play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Test series. He will now take a rest before the Asia Cup which will start at August end while the team prepares for the ODI World Cup.

Siraj scalped seven wickets in the Test series as spearheaded the bowling attack with Jaydev Unadkat, Mukesh Kumar, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin. India won the series 1-0 and started the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle on a high.

The management now wants Siraj to take a rest before a busy few months as India prepare for the Asia Cup and the World Cup. India will also play Australia in a three-match ODI series before the World Cup begins.

Siraj was part of the Indian team in March when they faced Australia and has been a consistent performer for the side. Since 2022, he is India’s highest wicket-taker in the white ball format.

Siraj will be joined on the plane by Ravichandran Ashwin, who is out of favour for the ODI World Cup. India are likely to axe the 2011 World Cup winner in favour of Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravindra Jadeja or Axar Patel.

The Indian team will begin its World Cup campaign on Sunday, October 8 against Australia while they will kick start their Asia Cup campaign against Pakistan on September 2.
