Pakistan`s opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif has appealed to a sessions court, hearing his defamation suit against Prime Minister Imran Khan, to conduct daily hearings.

In a tweet on Saturday, Sharif alleged that he filed the defamation case against Khan for "his blatant lies of offering him Rs 10 billion".

"In a defamation case that I filed against Imran Khan for his blatant lies of offering him Rs 10 billion, he has sought 33 deferments so far. I have petitioned the court to hear the case on daily basis. IK failed to submit his written reply to the court despite the passage of three years," he wrote.

Sharif had filed a Rs 10 billion defamation suit against Khan in 2017.

The petition, filed under Sections 4 and 9 of the Defamation Ordinance, 2002, said that Imran falsely accused Sharif of making him a financial offer for his "silence over the Panama Papers case", Geo News reported.

It stated that "the facts and circumstances giving rise to the filing of the instant suit are that since the last week of April 2017, the Defendant (Imran Khan) started uttering, spreading and resorting to the publication, communication and circulation of maliciously false, baseless and unfounded oral statements and representations against the plaintiff (Shehbaz)."

According to the suit, Khan claimed that Sharif "offered to pay a sum of (Rs 10 billion) to the defendant in exchange for his withdrawing/backing-off from, or remaining silent on the issue of the Panama Papers` case.

"In April 2017, Khan had alleged that he had been made an offer in the Panama case. He made the comments while addressing a gathering at Shaukat Khanum Hospital in Lahore.

"Just imagine how much money he offered me to be silent -- Rs10 billion! If he can offer me this much money, just imagine how much he could offer to others. That is why if we do not maintain public pressure on this issue, then after two months it will be dragged to the next year," Khan was quoted by Geo News as saying.

In an interview after making the comments, Khan did not disclose the name of the person who made the offer, but said the individual was close to the Punjab Chief Minister.Sharif had served as Punjab Chief Minister from 2013 to 2018.

The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) has hit out at Pakistan's Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances (COIED), saying it has failed to hold perpetrators responsible for the crime in the last several years.

In 2011, the COIED was formed to trace the whereabouts of missing persons and fix the responsibility on individuals or organisations responsible for the enforced disappearances. The probe body is headed by Justice Javed Iqbal, Dawn reported.

According to a briefing paper titled 'Entrenching Impunity, Denying Redress: The Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances in Pakistan', the ICJ noted that although the COIED had traced the whereabouts of the missing persons in a number of cases, there was no effort to fix the responsibility for the crime.

The paper evaluated the performance of COIED since its constitution and assessed the legal framework, under which the body operates as per international law and standards.

"This commission has failed in holding even a single perpetrator of enforced disappearance responsible in its nine years. A commission that does not address impunity, nor facilitate justice for victims and their families, can certainly not be considered effective," Ian Seiderman, the ICJ legal and policy director, was quoted as saying.

The ICJ was established in 1952 and is active in five continents. It comprises 60 eminent judges and lawyers from all regions of the world and protects human rights through rule of law by using its unique legal expertise to develop and strengthen national and international justice systems, Dawn reported.

Slamming the COIED, the ICJ regretted that hundreds of people continued to remain missing in Pakistan following their apparent arrest or abduction by security forces and military establishment. The UN Working Group on enforced disappearances has described a "culture of entrenched impunity" pertaining to the crime.

Despite the failure of the COIED to meet the objectives, its mandate was extended many times without consultation with the victims' groups. The present mandate is set to expire on September 14.

"The failure of COIED also demonstrates a larger problem," the ICJ said, adding that though ostensibly formed to provide a measure of public accountability, more often than not, the COIED had allegedly promoted impunity by diverting investigation of human rights violations and crimes through the criminal justice process into a parallel ad hoc mechanism vulnerable to political interference and manipulation, according to the Dawn.

"Recent experiences in Pakistan, the South Asia region and around the world suggested that without substantial reform to the existing law and practice, continued use of the COIED would not succeed in providing effective remedies to the victims of human rights violations," the ICJ noted.

The ICJ suggested that the mandate of the COIED should not be extended beyond September 14 and should make public the commission's final report.

Gravitas Plus: Geography lessons for Imran Khan

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Vice President Maryam Nawaz and 300 workers of her party were booked on Friday under terrorism charges for allegedly attacking law enforcers and hooliganism.

Police included Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997 in the FIR registered against the (PML-N) leaders and workers three weeks ago during their clash with police outside the office of national anti-graft body in Lahore where Maryam had come to appear in a land corruption case.

PML-N has protested inclusion of terrorism charges in the FIR, saying this has been done at the best of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

"Imran Khan gets unnerved seeing Maryam Nawaz active in politics. First the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) initiated a false land probe against Maryam at Imran's behest and now police booked her and other PML-N men under terrorism charges on the premier's order,? PML-N lawmaker Azma Bokhari told reporters in reaction to the police action.
Most of the PML-N leaders including Maryam's husband Capt (R) Safdar are on bail. Maryam however has yet to seek bail in this case.

Azma said the PML-N will challenge inclusion of terrorism charges in the court.

Violence had erupted outside the NAB office on August 11 in Lahore as heavy police contingents and workers of the PML-N confronted each other shortly after the arrival of Maryam there in a land acquisition case to record her statement.

Several PML-N workers, policemen and NAB officials had suffered injuries during the clash and 58 arrested who were later released on bail.

The PML-N had filed a complaint regarding registration of FIR against Prime Minister Imran Khan, NAB chairman Javed Iqbal, PM's adviser Shahzad Akbar and the Punjab government for -- making an attempt on the life of Maryam Nawaz -- by attacking on her car, but police refused to register it.

"Had I not been in a bullet-proof car there could have been a loss of life. There was an organised conspiracy behind calling me to the NAB office. They wanted to cause harm to me," Maryam had said.

Torrential rain lashed the Pakistani financial capital of Karachi on Thursday, causing widespread flooding, as downpours in August shattered 89-year-old records for the city, meteorological officials said.

The monsoon showers first lashed the biggest city of Pakistan on Tuesday and has killed at least 27 people according to sources.

Videos posted on social media and footage on television channels painted a grim picture of a major collapse of the civic structure in Karachi, with rain water even entering homes in some areas while most main roads remained flooded and closed for traffic.

Thursday marked the third day of heavy rain this week while residents have been forced to abandon their homes.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said that heavy rainfall had caused a "disastrous situation" in Karachi. He instructed the Provincial Disaster Management Authority to provide food, water and other essential items, he said.

Provincial authorities were moving displaced families into school buildings, as the military carried out rescue and relief operations.

"It has never rained so much in the month of August, according to our data," the country's chief meteorological officer, Sardar Sarfaraz, said, adding that the data went back to 1931, 16 years before Pakistan gained independence from Britain.

Some 484 mm (19 inches) of rain had fallen this month, 130 mm on Thursday alone, he said.

Abdul Razak Dawood, adviser to Prime Minister Imran Khan on commerce, feared the rain would hit exports.

"Our exports consignments are being delayed and hence our exports for the month of August may be affected," Dawood said on Twitter.

Once we are on the blacklist, our entire economy will be destroyed due to inflation." Pakistan has been on FATF's greylist for last two years even as it has been given several deadlines to full fill its commitments to improve transparency in financial dealings and take action on the financing of terrorism. Khan blamed India for trying to push his country on the blacklist. He said, "If we go on the blacklist, Pakistan will be destroyed as India has been trying to do. Who is trying to put us on the blacklist, its India. For 2 year India has been trying to blacklist Pakistan by lobbying with the international community." FATF calls for transparent financial controls so that money is not used for financing of terror or money laundering. The Paris based body will meet in October and on the agenda will be future actions related to Pakistan's listing. After last year's meet, the grouping had called on Pakistan to "demonstrate" effective implementation of financial sanctions against all United Nation's 1267 committee designated international terrorist among other things. The list includes Pulwama attack mastermind Masood Azhar and 1993 Mumbai blast mastermind Dawood Ibrahim. According to estimates by Pakistani govt, greylisting of Pakistan at FATF is causing damage of around $10 billion annually to the country.

In a major setback to Prime Minister Imran Khan, the US is probing Pakistanis who were fighting for the Islamic State in Syria.

At least 29 Pakistanis have been caught by the US-backed Kurdish-Syrian democratic forces, and nine of them are women. They are all being interrogated by the US.

The interrogations will focus on who sent them to fight for the Islamic State, their previous affiliations with terror groups in Pakistan and if they have links with Pakistan's secret agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

For Prime Minister Imran Khan, this is another embarrassment and it has come at the worst possible time. In October, the FATF (Financial Action Task Force) is set to review Pakistan's record.

The FATF is a terror financing watchdog, and Pakistan has been on its grey list. It should be in the black list, but countries such as China, Turkey and Malaysia save Pakistan from that, so it remains in the grey list.

Pakistan wants to step out of this grey list but revelations like these will make sure it stays where it is.

Meanwhile, the people of Pakistan are worried as the floods are destroying their houses and resources. Heavy rains have killed at least 90 people and damaged 1,000 homes across the country. The city of Karachi is living under water. The locals are frustratedwith the government as this happens every monsoon season.

Three days of monsoon rains have left Pakistan flooded with more than 90 fatalities, and thousands of homes destroyed.

Nearly 23 people have been declared dead in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 15 are dead in Baluchistan, eight have died in Pakistan's Punjab, and 13 reported dead elsewhere in Pakistan, including three in Pak-occupied Kashmir.

The province of Sindh is the worst affected where 31 have been declared dead.

31 dead --- in the annual monsoon deluge.

"You can see there is havoc. People are so annoyed. No vehicle can pass through the streets as all ways are inundated. We appeal to the government that must do something and clean storm nullahs (storm water drains) so the people would take a breath of relief," a local said.

At least eight people have died in Karachi alone, mostly due to electrocution and drowning.

To top this, now, sewage water is flooding homes in low-lying areas. Earlier this month, troops helped pump out rainwater, and this time disaster relief is yet to arrive.

Locals have alleged that the residents have had to save their homes, resources and their families on their own with no help from the government.

Every year, many cities 'go under' after heavy rains due to poor city planning. In the case of Karachi, it is due to outdated sewage systems.

Monsoon floods, Pakistani terrorists in Syria: Troubles for Imran Khan increase

Imran Khan has been named 'Man of the Year' by 'The Muslim 500' for his efforts for 'long-lasting peace with India'. Palki Sharma Upadhyay fact-checks Pak PM'S 'accomplishments' mentioned in the publication.

Gravitas: Imran Khan named 'Man of the Year'?

China is selling four of its most advanced warships to Pakistan. In June, a report claimed that China has built a high-security compound at the Gwadar port in Pakistan. Is China militarizing the string of pearls? Palki Sharma Upadhyay tells you more.

Gravitas: China is selling Pakistan its most advanced warships

Since 2015, China has been the biggest supplier of arms to Pakistan. But, the defence partnership between both sides goes well beyond weapons. Palki Sharma Upadhyay tells you how the Pakistani Army is being readied as a surrogate fighting force for China.

Gravitas: Pakistan Army: A surrogate fighting force for China?

The China-Pakistan defence partnership has everything covered. This partnership covers weapons, training, and intelligence sharing.

The United States had cut off military funding to Pakistan but, China has now swooped in with weapons and tactics.

An attempt to make sure that Pakistan remains a security challenge for India. Pakistan surviving on loans from its allies, former allies and the IMF.

Pakistan is also military with a country, where decisions are taken from Rawalpindi and not Islamabad.

So, while Imran Khan has made tall claims on austerity, Pakistan's military hasn’t seen any major cuts to its budget. In fact, in 2019, they bought arms in large quantities from China.

In July, China agreed to supply four attack drones to Pakistan. In December 2019, they struck a deal to supply 236 Howitzer guns. They signed a contract worth $512 million.

Another agreement was signed to overhaul Pakistan's main battle tank. Reports say Pakistan may also get the Chinese JH-7 jets to boost air power.

By a large margin, China is now the chief supplier of weapons to Pakistan. From 2015 to 2019, 73 per cent of Pakistan's arms came from China.

All other suppliers --- have a single-digit share and Chinese military support is not just limited to arms. The P.L.A. Is also training with Pakistan's soldiers.

In January, the navies of China and Pakistan conducted a nine-day mega naval exercise. It was called “sea guardians 2020”. The drills were carried out in the northern Arabian sea.

A month before that, the warrior seven joint military drills was held in Pakistan. In August 2019, the air forces conducted the Shaheen eight military exercise.

It happened in the Chinese city of Holton, which is close to the Indian border near Ladakh.

Last year, both sides decided to take their relationship to the next level. Pakistan’s Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa visited Beijing.

He met with Xu Qiliang, the vice-chairman of the central military commission, which is China’s top military body.

China and Pakistan are now sharing military intelligence too. Recently, a Pakistani general was invited to attend a highly restricted meeting of the central military commission. This was an effort to enhance cooperation on Afghanistan.

China’s military support to Pakistan is expanding in all directions. From selling firepower to sharing intelligence, the dragon is building another defence force on India's western border.

Imran Khan added in his tweet that this drastic change is the result of "continuous improvement in exports which increased by 20 percent as compared to in June 2020 and record remittances".

As per the data released by the Ministry of Commerce, Pakistan exports for the month of July stood at $1.99bn as compared to $1.88bn recorded in July 2019.

It was earlier reported that remittances from Pakistani workers employed abroad hit the highest level for a single month in July, increasing 36.5% year on year, mostly thanks to less spending on Haj pilgrimages because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The global economic slowdown had raised fears that remittances, key to Pakistan’s dwindling foreign exchange reserves, would decline given falling employment in countries from where most of the money is sent - particularly Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.

But July remittances rose to $2.768 billion, the State Bank of Pakistan said, adding the increase was up 12.2% from June, when remittance numbers were also high.

Pakistan has opened all sectors of the economy in a bid to revive its hard-hit economy. The country has reported 289,215 positive COVID-19 cases of which 269,087 have recovered, with 6,175 deaths.

As Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government completes its first two years in office this week, his country seems to be having the worst week it's history.

On Monday, the ''all-weather'' friendship between China-Pakistan failed the test of monsoon after the ceiling of the Islamabad International Airport, made by China State Construction Engineering Corporation, collapsed after heavy rainfall.

Pakistan's army chief Bajwa arrived in Saudi Arabia on the same day, its embassy in Riyadh said, amid a diplomatic spat that has threatened Riyadh's financial life line to the cash-strapped South Asian nation.

On Tuesday, Imran Khan received his two-years work report, in which he failed miserably.

On Wednesday, Bajwa returned to his country sans glory, medals and any sort of aid.

On Thursday, reports came that the country is harassing a Palestinian envoy to sell his car, exposing the country's attitude towards the race.

On Friday, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi accompanied by his officers is paid an official visit to Hainan, China.

However, no Chinese official turned up to the airport for their guest's official welcome. Before departing for his visit, Qureshi had boasted how he will lead the Pakistan side in the Second Round of the China-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue and how the visit will play an important role in further strengthening Pakistan-China "All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership" and deepen strategic communication and coordination with China on a range of issues.

Pakistan and China are longtime allies and partners in the multibillion-dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which has seen Beijing pledge over $60 billion for infrastructure projects in Pakistan, central to China’s wider Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to develop land and sea trade routes in Asia and beyond.

Meanwhile, Pakistan's Railways minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed prophesied a "nuclear war" against India, saying there will be a "bloody and final war".

In an interview Ahmed said Islamabad has "small" and "perfect" weapons, that will save Muslim lives and target other regions. He also said that Pakistan's weapons can also reach the Indian state of Assam, adding that next 4-6 months will be very critical, in a reference to elections in the United States.

Pakistan is an expert of making empty threats and absurd statements when India is concerned. The most lethal weapon in the country's arsenal, Babur II cruise missile has a range of 750kms. Whereas, the distance between Islamabad to Assam is 2000kms.

Babur II is cheap, inferior copy of India's Nirbhay nuclear missile. It also failed its test launch twice in 2018 and March this year.

Ali Amin Gandapur, Federal minister for Pak-occupied Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, also claimed that Pakistan has included PoK in its map.
