Several parts of Delhi-NCR received light rain on the night of Sunday, December 8. This comes amid the rising air pollution crisis in the national capital, with the drizzle bringing some respite from the poor air quality.&nbsp;

The air quality in Delhi slipped into the 'very poor’ category after recording 302 on the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 4 pm on December 8. The city recorded an improved AQI in the ‘moderate’ category at the beginning of December. The air quality in the region is expected to improve after the rainfall.

According to the latest forecast, IMD predicted very light rainfall or drizzle in isolated places in Delhi. The rain was expected in areas including the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Vasant Kunj, Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar, Kalkaji, Mehrauli, Tughlaqabad, Chhattarpur, IGNOU, Aya Nagar, and Deramandi.&nbsp;

The weather department said NCR regions, including Noida, Gurugram, Manesar, and Farukhnagar, are also likely to receive rain, followed by fog the next morning.

“Western disturbance persists over central Pakistan and its surrounding areas... Light to moderate rain is expected in the Himalayas today and tomorrow. Light rain is expected in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi,” Naresh Kumar, a scientist at IMD, told the news agency ANI.

<h2>IMD predicts cold wave</h2>

The Met department has predicted a significant dip in the temperatures in Delhi from December 10, with the mercury touching as low as 3 degrees Celcius.

Cold wave conditions are likely to develop in the northern belt, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Western Uttar Pradesh, and remain till December 14. IMD has also predicted snowfall in the northern hills as a result of the western disturbance.&nbsp;

“The cold wave will first hit Rajasthan, followed by Punjab and Haryana,” Naresh Kumar told ANI.

A dense fog warning has also been issued across northern India on December 9 and 10, which may cause reduced visibility and disrupt transportation.

Heavy rain lashed parts of Delhi-NCR, bringing relief from high humidity levels on Wednesday (August 7). The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the Indian national capital.

The minimum temperature in New&nbsp;Delhi was recorded at 26.4 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal for the season, according to the weather department. The maximum temperature is likely to settle at 32 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

The humidity level recorded in the city at 8:30 am (local time) was measured at 92 per cent.

The rain has brought relief for the residents of Delhi-NCR with cloudy skies and strong winds. IMD has predicted more rains in the region over the next two days and issued a yellow alert.

In a statement, the weather department of New Delhi has stated "Light to moderate rainfall is very likely to occur... during next 2 hours" in parts of Delhi and nearby regions, including Ghaziabad and Noida.

Heavy rains have impacted other regions of India during the last few weeks, resulting in floods&nbsp;in several&nbsp;states including Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, and Kerala.

In Kerala, landslides due to monsoon rains resulted in over 300 deaths. Himachal Pradesh has witnessed flash floods which claimed at least 13 lives.

A cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir has completely disrupted the Srinagar-Leh national highway, while Uttar Pradesh and New&nbsp;Delhi have also witnessed few deaths due to rain-related incidents.

Monsoon rains returned to Delhi-NCR and brought relief from the heat on Friday, July 19. The humidity and temperatures&nbsp;remained high during the last few days, but the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light showers in the national capital region today.

According to the weather department, rain is expected in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad with a cloudy sky throughout the day. The maximum temperature is predicted to touch 37 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may remain near 29 degrees Celsius.

IMD has forecasted increased monsoon activity in the coming days for Delhi-NCR. Light rain and cloudy skies are expected on Saturday, July 20. The intensity of&nbsp;rain is expected to increase during the next 4-5 days.

IMD predicts heavy rains in most parts of Uttar Pradesh as monsoon activity is expected to increase over the next coming days. Thunderstorm warnings have also been issued in various regions.

Southwest Monsoon is likely to arrive over Kerala around May 31, setting the stage for the four-month rainfall season crucial for India's farm-based economy.

"This year, the Southwest Monsoon is likely to set over Kerala on May 31 with a model error of four days," the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday.

"This is not early; it's close to the normal date," IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

The date of monsoon onset over Kerala has varied widely over the last 150 years, the earliest being May 11, 1918, and the most delayed being June 18, 1972, according to IMD data.

The rain-bearing system arrived in the southern state on June 8 last year, May 29 in 2022, June 3 in 2021 and June 1 in 2020.

Last month, the IMD had forecast above-normal rain in the monsoon season in India with favourable La Nina&nbsp;conditions expected to set in by August-September.

Parts of the country battled brutal heat in April, with maximum temperatures shattering records in several states and severely impacting health and livelihoods.

The crippling heat is straining power grids and drying up water bodies triggering drought-like conditions in parts of the country. A prediction of above-normal monsoonal rainfall, therefore, comes as a huge relief to the fast-developing South Asian nation.

The monsoon is critical for India's agricultural landscape, with 52 per cent of the net cultivated area relying on it. It is also crucial for replenishing reservoirs critical for drinking water, apart from power generation across the country.

June and July are considered the most important monsoon months for agriculture because most of the sowing for the Kharif crop takes place during this period.

With the IMD forecasting the formation of a low pressure area over south Andaman Sea in the next 48 hours and the possibility of its eventual build-up into a cyclone, the Odisha government on Sunday put all district collectors on alert asking them to closely monitor the situation.

Odisha's Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) P K Jena, in a letter to the district collectors, said that that the weatherman has forecast the formation of a low pressure area over south Andaman Sea around November 30, and it is likely to become more marked and move north-westwards in the subsequent 48 hours.

Jena also mentioned that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted rain over some places in Jagatsinghur, Kendrapara, Kandhamal, Malkangiri, Koraput and Rayagada districts from 8.30 am on December 2 to 8.30 am on December 3.

He asked the district collectors to ensure that fishermen return to the coast by December 2 as squally weather conditions with surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph and gusting up to 70 kmph will likely prevail over west-central Bay of Bengal from that date.

IMD director general Mrutunjay Mohapatra said that Odisha is likely to experience rainfall from December 2 to December 5 and did not rule out the possibility of a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal in the first week of December.

"The low pressure area is likely to become more marked and the system will have the potential to take the shape of a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. However, we can give more information, including on the intensity of rainfall and wind speed, after formation of the low pressure area on November 30," Mohapatra told a local news channel.

The IMD DG said that the north coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal may be impacted if the low pressure area turns into a cyclonic storm.
