Following India’s stunning clean-sweep of the England tour where the Virat Kohli-led outfit won the Test, T20I and ODI series, former Australia captain Ian Chappell has sounded a warning to other teams saying India are on their way to dominance.

Chappell is of the view that the emergence of young talents well equipped to take on the world’s best strikes a note of fear. The former Aussie skipper heaped praise on the Indian team while lauding their ability and confidence to fight in overseas conditions as well.

“India’s recent successes in Australia – particularly the latest one – have only reinforced the players’ belief in their ability to win under any circumstance. In an era where teams struggle overseas, India now has the depth of talent to alter that pattern. No longer can opponents afford to say, when India are on their doorstep, ‘Just pick a string of fast bowlers with long run-ups and the series will be ours’,” Chappell wrote in his column at ESPNcricinfo.

Chappell then answered one of the most asked questions, can India carry on with their dominance for years?: “‘Can India replicate the dominant periods of West Indies and Australia?’: “India have finally got the equation right and as long as they avoid the pitfalls often associated with continuing success, they are better equipped than any team to produce an era of dominance. The rest of the cricketing world beware. The emergence of such talents as Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini, Washington Sundar, T Natarajan, and Axar Patel would have been monumental if it had happened in the space of three years, let alone just three months as it did.

“And when you consider that Shardul Thakur excelled in just his second game and the ebullient Rishabh Pant was an international match-winner before his 20th appearance, it really is a rosy picture. A rosy picture, that is, if you’re an Indian fan; for the rest of the cricket world, it strikes a note of fear,” Chappell concluded.

'Cricketing world, beware': Ian Chappell predicts era of dominance for Team India

From being slapped with a fine to dropping three major catches, Tim Paine had a forgettable performance at the SCG Test due to which he faced severe backlash.

Paine was also involved in a verbal spat with Ravichandran Ashwin, for which the skipper apologised later on.

Many cricketing experts, including former Australian captain Ian Chappell, criticised Paine for his actions during the third Test. Chappell advised Paine to just ‘shut up and get on with the job’.

“But like all players, you’re better off just shutting up and getting on with the job. It was a classic example of why you should do that. To get involved in that - whatever he was trying to with Ashwin, I’m not sure - but to then drop him just a few balls later is a good reason why [you should remain quiet]", Ian Chappell told Wide World of Sports.

“It’s a hard enough job being a wicketkeeper. Then throw in being a captain and a wicketkeeper, you don’t need to be talking - you need to be thinking. And it’s not just Tim Paine; it’s pretty much all modern players. This business about, ‘It’s part of the game’; well, in my opinion, it’s not part of the game,” Chappell added.

Chappell went on to call Tim Paine a 'smart guy' and said that Paine will learn a lesson from his behaviour.

“The main thing is, and Tim’s a smart guy; as soon as he dropped the catch, he’s probably thinking to himself, ‘Why did I shoot my mouth off and not concentrate on keeping?’ He’s sorts of indicated that he’s not happy with his performance and I think you’ll find that he might be a little less vocal in future,” Ian Chappell further added.

“I think he’s a good captain. Every captain will miss some tricks along the way,” he added.

'Shut up and get on with job': Ian Chappell's advise to Tim Paine

Virat Kohli's absence in the final three Test matches against hosts Australia has been the talking point of the tour. Ajinkya Rahane is likely to lead the team in Kohli's absence. Rahane will be leading with a huge void left by Kohli's absence.

Aussie legend Ian Chappell feels that captaincy should not be a problem for India in the Test series as they have Rahane, however, he agreed that Virat's absence could play a huge role.

Chappell recalled Rahane’s ‘aggressive’ style of captaincy in the Dharamsala Test in 2017. “Well, I saw him captain in one Test against Australia (in Dharamsala in March 2017) and found his captaincy to be fabulous. He was really an aggressive captain,” Chappell told PTI during a virtual interactive session “Cricket Conversations”, anchored by senior cricket journalist Ashis Ray.

“I remember a couple of aspects about his captaincy. What stood out for me was in the Australian first innings, Warner was going well and getting on top of Indian bowlers. He brought in Kuldeep Yadav (debutant) and he dismissed Warner.

“The second thing I remember was India chasing a low total and they lost a couple of wickets. Rahane just came in and attacked the Australian bowlers and scored some 20 odd (38 off 27 balls). I liked that approach.”

“Look, as a captain, you always have two choices -- one is the aggressive route and the other is a conservative approach. I have believed that in Test cricket aggressive approach is must and Rahane is aggressive.”

India have an edge against the Australian side in the day and night test match where Kohli will be present but the hosts will be missing out on Warner.

“Everything that could have gone wrong with opening has gone wrong. Warner is out and Joe Burns has been struggling. Luke Pucovski after another concussion, I don’t think it would be good to play him both in terms of confidence and medical point of view.”

“I think Australians will go with Joe Burns and Marcus Harris opening combination. I thought Cameron Green would have played in Sydney but after his century in the warm-up game and a couple of wickets that he picked, there may be a temptation to play him in Adelaide,” said the former Aussie legend.

Pacer Mitchell Starc will be replaced by James Pattinson. Starc is not available as he is out on compassionate grounds.

“But top order is the biggest concern. It’s not just about Warner’s presence but the manner in which he scores those runs as has detrimental effect on the opposition. In his absence, the responsibility will now be on Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne,” Chappell said.

He revealed a trick on how India could dismiss Smith. “You have to unsettle him (Smith) by changing plans. If you bowl short of a length, then he will be rocking back (and hitting for fun) all day. Somehow, you have got to get him to play forward even at the cost of few runs. But you will still have some chance of getting him out,” he said.

Australia's explosive all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has defended the 'switch hit' which met with Ian Chappell’s criticism, who expressed his reservation about the shot and called it 'unfair' while speaking to Wide World of Sports.

However, Maxwell defended his signature shot and said that the shot is very much within the rules of the game.

"It is within the laws of the game. Batting has evolved in such a way, that it has got better and better over the years, which is why we see these massive scores are getting chased down and the scores are going up," Maxwell said when asked about Chappell’s comments after the ODI series which Australia won 2-1.

Maxwell perfectly executed the 'switch hit' shot during the series against India. The Aussie urged the bowlers to come up with a plan to combat it. "And I suppose it is up-to-the bowlers to try and combat that," he said. "I suppose the skills of bowlers have been tested every day with bowlers having to come up with different change-ups, different ways to stop batters."

Former Aussie spinner Shane Warne supported Chappell's thought about the switch hit, saying it gives the batsmen an 'unfair advantage'. But the all-rounder responded by saying: "We see guys come up with knuckle-balls and wide yorker fields and different tactics. And the tactics of ODI cricket have definitely evolved, so I just see it (switch hit) as a different part of the evolution of the game."

Also read: IPL 13: Who should replace Suresh Raina in CSK playing XI? Scott Styris opines "One thing is certain: where there’s a will, there’s a way, and the better players are dedicated to finding a solution," Chappell wrote in a column for ESPNcricinfo.com. "In case of Indian players, and some of the Australians, they will at least have some challenging IPL cricket in the lead-up to the December series." Chappell admitted the IPL "may not seem like ideal preparation for a tough Test series in Australia" but he recalled the thoughts of former England batsman Ravi Bopara in 2009. "After a stint in the IPL, Bopara was asked on return to England if this was appropriate preparation for a Test match. He responded by saying that 'looking to score at every opportunity gets your feet moving positively'. He proved his point emphatically by scoring back-to-back centuries against West Indies." According to Chappel, health and safety protocols in place will make it difficult for visiting teams to prevail over home sides in the COVID-19 era. "With venue bubbles, isolation rules, social distancing, and a number of changes to playing conditions, adapting to international competition has been testing for players. It's made life difficult and different even in a team environment but imagine the individual’s dilemma in enforced isolation with a tour looming," he said. "The physical preparation is not so difficult, especially for self-starters, but how do you stay in cricket shape?" However, the 76-year-old legend the Indians very well understand the stakes associated with the tour of Australia and will leave no stone unturned in their preparations for the series. “The Indian players could well adopt this attitude for a series in Australia that will impact the Border-Gavaskar trophy, the World Test Championship, and their personal pride. It’s unlikely India will have the luxury of lead-up matches against tough opposition. More likely it will be intra-squad games, which can be helpful if selection is judicious and pits good bowlers against equally talented batsmen. The downside is the fast bowlers are often wary of injuring their own players," said the former captain. India will be visiting Australia after the IPL for a tour on November 10. The heavyweights will clash in a T20 series followed by four Tests and ODIs. The IPL begins in Abu Dhabi on September 19. (Inputs from PTI)

IPL can help Australian and Indian players with 'challenging' practice before December series: Chappel

The jury is still out on whether Mahendra Singh Dhoni's much-acclaimed finishing powers are on the wane or not but former Australia captain Ian Chappell still considers the World Cup-winning former skipper as the "best finisher" in 50-over format.

Dhoni was recently awarded the Man of the series for his match-winning knocks which helped India win their maiden ODI series in Australia.Chappell saluted the former India skipper's nerve and longevity.

"Nobody has Dhoni's nerve for finishing off victories. Many times I've thought, "He's left it too late this time", only to be amazed as he produced a couple of powerful shots to bring India a nail-biting victory," Chappell wrote in his column in ESPNcricinfo.

"His outward calm is no illusion since his tactical adeptness in these situations is proof his brain continues to work perfectly."

Drawing a comparison with Michael Bevan, who is considered to be one of the greatest finisher of the game, Chappell said Dhoni has surpassed the former Australian number six.

"Where Bevan finished matches with fours, Dhoni does so with sixes. The one area - running between wickets - where you'd expect the fleet-footed Bevan to have an advantage is debatable, because even at age 37, Dhoni is among the quickest in the game," he wrote.

"Even allowing for improved bats and the advantage of playing T20 cricket, statistically Dhoni is superior to Bevan. There can be no argument - Dhoni is the best ODI finisher."

Of late, Dhoni has often been criticised for his slow innings but the former India skipper silenced the doubters when he unleashed a massive six at Adelaide to seal the third ODI and the series 2-1.

"His trademark lofted on-drive comfortably cleared one of the longer Adelaide Oval boundaries to settle the issue in that particular finishing effort," Chappell wrote.

"It was a clear reminder that any thought that his power might be waning was only wishful thinking on the part of opponents. That he achieved the feat in stifling heat only added to the lustre of his performance."

Regarding the 'best ODI batsman' debate, Chappell feels Virat Kohli will surpass legends like Viv Richards, Sachin Tendulkar and AB de Villiers and end his career as the 'Sir Donald Bradman of ODI batsmen'.

"Kohli reminds me of Richards in his approach to ODI batting; he eschews fancy shots and relies on a wide range of traditional strokes ... As the only one of this quartet still playing ODIs, Kohli already heads some important statistical categories," he wrote.

"If he were to continue at his current rate - an unlikely outcome as he ages - he would pass Tendulkar's aggregate with more than one hundred innings to spare and nearly 20 centuries in advance of the Little Master.

"If he even came close to achieving these amazing feats, there could be no argument: Kohli would be the Sir Donald Bradman of ODI batsmen."

A group of prominent Australians Thursday urged India's Adani Enterprises to abandon a giant coal mine project near the Great Barrier Reef, warning it could damage bilateral ties and even affect sporting links.

The controversial Aus$21.7 billion (US$16 billion) Carmichael mine -- destined to be one of the world's biggest -- is set to start construction this year after being given the green light by the federal and Queensland state governments.

It still faces several ongoing legal challenges, with a final investment decision by Adani reportedly pending.

In a letter to Adani chairman Gautam Adani, due to be hand-delivered Thursday by businessman and environmentalist Geoffrey Cousins, the 90 Australians urged him to reconsider.

Signatories include former Australian Test cricket captains Ian and Greg Chappell, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Geraldine Brooks, Australian-based British comedian Ben Elton, and rock group Midnight Oil.

It cites public opposition, risks to miners' health, the potential impact on the World Heritage-listed reef, which is already suffering from climate change, and India's reputation as reasons not to proceed.

"We urge you to think about global warming and public health and listen to the wishes of the people," said the letter, designed to counter a visit to Adani headquarters by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk this week.

"It would be a great shame if this one project were to damage the image of India in Australia.

"We understand the Adani Group has not made a final investment decision on the Carmichael coal mine. We strongly urge you to decide to abandon this project."

Ian Chappell suggested it could also hurt sporting ties, with the two nations arch cricketing rivals who are currently involved in a fiery Test series in India.

"Cricket has a bit to do with the feeling between India and Australia," he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. "The thought that this (mine) could affect the relationship, hopefully that'll get through."

The development proposes exporting coal to India via a massive open-cut and underground coal mine 160 kilometres (100 miles) northwest of Clermont in central Queensland, and a 189-kilometre rail link to port.

Adani forecasts it will produce 60 million tonnes of thermal coal a year for export with its Australia chief Jeyakumar Janakaraj in December insisting it would have a "net positive impact on climate change in the world".

"India is a large consumer of coal either way. So if Australia doesn't produce and give India high-quality, highly sustainable mining, it is going to rely on coal that will come from lesser reliable geographies," he said.
