At least one person was killed after a plane crashed in Hollywood Wednesday afternoon, CBS News reported. The plane crashed near a shopping plaza.&nbsp;

Arlene Satchell, who is a spokesperson for the airport, said as quoted by Sun Sentinel that the preliminary information shows the plane departed from North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines. &nbsp;

As quoted by US-based media outlets, the statement by the Federal Aviation Administration revealed that the authorities said the single-engine Piper aircraft went down at 450 N Park Road, near Hollywood Boulevard, around 12:45pm (local time).&nbsp;

"Upon impact, the plane was fully engulfed in flames and fire rescue responded to put out the blaze. It appeared to be a single-engine plane with one person deceased inside," said city spokesperson Deanne Bettineschi as quoted by media reports.&nbsp;

The plane was completely enveloped in flames when Hollywood Fire Rescue arrived and Chopper4 observed firefighters dousing the burnt remnants of the plane with foam from above.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the pilot who lost his life was the only occupant of the plane. The identity and other details about the pilot were not available.&nbsp;

The plane was seen bouncing up and down in the viral video before it crashed.&nbsp;

As quoted by CBS News, Rhonda Martinez said that she saw the plane before it crashed. She said, "I saw the plane flying low to the left and I saw yellow and the plane with a banner and it seemed like it was losing altitude because it was going in a downward position and that seemed awfully low for a plane to be flying."

As quoted by Sun Sentinel, Karen Schiff said that she was driving north on North Park Road when she saw the plane. Schiff works for Memorial Healthcare System at an outpatient centre near Target.&nbsp;

Schiff said it appeared that the pilot was attempting to manoeuvre the plane to make an emergency landing in a safe place, away from the busier lanes. &nbsp;

In a tale that blends tinsel town turmoil with financial fiasco, Hudson Pacific Properties, a major Hollywood landlord, finds itself in a predicament as it grapples with the fallout from an ongoing writers'&nbsp;strike.

The real estate investment firm made a shocking announcement on Monday: the withdrawal of its 2023 financial guidance and a 40 percent to 50 percent slash in its dividend. Following the announcement, Hudson Pacific's shares plunged&nbsp;nearly 11 percent to $4.61 at 9:51 a.m. in New York on Tuesday, Bloomberg reported.&nbsp;

Known for its affiliation with the glittering world of showbiz, Hudson Pacific has&nbsp;an impressive repertoire of 60 sound stages and 1,600 production vehicles, making it one of the largest owners of studio space in Hollywood. But&nbsp;the ongoing strike by the Writers Guild of America&nbsp;has left&nbsp;Hudson Pacific in the lurch.

The company's troubles were brewing even before the strike began on May 2. The pandemic's lingering effects haunted Hudson Pacific's office buildings, leaving vacancies in their wake. As leases expired in the San Francisco area and Silicon Valley, cash rents took a nosedive of 4.9 percent, and office vacancies expanded.

To add insult to injury, Hudson Pacific's adjusted funds from operations stood at a mere 35 cents per share, missing the 41-cent estimate compiled by Bloomberg.

The company had set the stage for a more prosperous performance.&nbsp;It had&nbsp;triumphantly acquired buildings used by studios to craft their cinematic masterpieces, spanning the bustling streets of Los Angeles to the fog-kissed shores of the United Kingdom. Just last year, the company stunned onlookers by investing a staggering $360 million to acquire Quixote Studios. This move seemed poised to catapult the company to new heights, reminiscent of a heroic plot twist. But&nbsp;life rarely imitates art.

With a touch of melancholy, the company revealed that it had already sensed a disturbance in the studio business, particularly in March.

In previous writer's strikes, studios would race against time to complete their projects before the impending work stoppage. However, this time, entertainment companies chose a different path, slashing spending on programming due to years of financial losses from their streaming services. This has&nbsp;left Hudson Pacific and its peers in a spot of bother.&nbsp;

All eyes are now on the company's management, which will hold a conference call with investors at noon (New York time) on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Hollywood drama unleashed: Hudson Pacific Properties hit by writers' strike

First the pandemic, then slowing business, and now the writers' strike has put Hudson Pacific Properties -- a major landlord in Hollywood --- in trouble. The company has decided to cut its dividend by 40 to 50% amid the writers' strike which looks unlikely to end anytime soon.

Major Hollywood landlord forecasts bleak outlook

The Hollywood writers' strike broke out this week over pay, but the refusal of studios like Netflix and Disney to rule out artificial intelligence&nbsp;replacing human scribes in the future has only fueled anger and fear on the picket lines.

With their rapidly advancing ability to eerily mimic human conversation, AI programs like ChatGPT have spooked many industries recently. The White House this week summoned Big Tech to discuss the potential risks.

As part of the weeks-long talks with studios and streamers that collapsed Monday, the Writers Guild of America asked for binding agreements to regulate the use of AI.

Under the proposals, nothing written by AI can be considered "literary" or "source" material -- industry terms that decide who gets royalties -- and scripts written by WGA members cannot "be used to train AI."

But according to the WGA, studios "rejected our proposal," and countered with an offer merely to meet once a year to "discuss advancements in technology."

"It's nice for them to offer to have a meeting about how they're exploiting it against us!" joked WGA negotiating committee member Eric Heisserer, who wrote Netflix hit film Bird Box.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-harry-potter-films-lotr-trilogy-returning-to-indian-theatres-589894">Harry Potter films, LOTR trilogy returning to Indian theatres</a>

"Art cannot be created by a machine. You lose the heart and soul of the story... I mean, the first word is 'artificial,'" he told AFP on the picket line outside the streaming giant's Hollywood HQ Friday.

While writers already know this, the danger is that "we have to watch tech companies destroy the business in an attempt to find out for themselves," he said.

- 'Not just scripts' -

While few television and film writers who spoke to AFP on the picket lines believe their work could be done by computers, the apparent conviction of studios and streamers that it can has been an extra slap in the face.&nbsp;

They fear that belt-tightening executives in Hollywood, where Silicon Valley companies have upended many traditional practices such as long-term contracts for writers, may seek to cut costs further by getting computers to write their next hit shows.

Comments by top Hollywood executives at this week's Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills will have done nothing to quell writers' concerns.

"In the next three years, you're going to see a movie that was written by AI made... a good one," said movie producer Todd Lieberman.

"Not just scripts. Editing, all of it... storyboarding a movie, anything," added Fox Entertainment CEO, Rob Wade.

"AI in the future, maybe not next year or the year after, but if we're talking 10 years? AI is going to be able to do absolutely all of these things."

The studios' own account of the breakdown in WGA talks offered a more nuanced take.&nbsp;

In a briefing note shared with AFP, they said writers do not in fact want to outlaw AI and appear happy to use it "as part of their creative process" -- so long as it does not affect their pay.

That scenario "requires a lot more discussion, which we've committed to doing," the studios said.

- 'Guardrails' -

For Leila Cohan, a 39-year-old writer on Netflix smash hit "Bridgerton," the only use of AI for writers is limited to "busy work" such as coming up with names for characters.

But she predicted that studios "could start making incredibly bad first drafts with AI and then hiring writers to do a rewrite."

"I think that's certainly a very scary possibility... it's very smart that we're addressing this now," she said.

Indeed, the last Hollywood strike in 2007-08 won writers the right to be paid for online viewing of their shows or films -- highly prescient, at a time when streaming was in its infancy.

Back then, Netflix had barely started online viewing, and the likes of Disney+ and Apple TV+ were more than a decade away.

Even for sci-fi writer Ben Ripley, who believes there is no role whatsoever for AI in writing, introducing legislation now "to put guardrails up" is "very necessary."

Writers "have to be original," he said. "Artificial intelligence is the antithesis of originality."

Hollywood strikes inflamed by claim AI could do writers' jobs

The group representing&nbsp;Hollywood&nbsp;studios fired back on Thursday at claims from striking film and television workers that they have been forced into the "gig economy" because of changes brought by the streaming TV era. Roughly 11,500 members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike on Tuesday, saying that studios had "created a gig economy inside a union workforce."

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents major studios such as Walt Disney Co and Netflix Inc, said writing movies or TV shows in&nbsp;Hollywood&nbsp;"has almost nothing in common with standard 'gig' jobs."

Most TV writers, the group said, are employed on a weekly or

episodic basis, with a guarantee of a specified number of weeks or episodes.

In addition, writing comes with "substantial" benefits "that are far superior to what many full-time employees receive for working an entire year," such as healthcare, pension plan contributions and paid parental leave.

Writers say they are working more and making less as studios have shifted their focus to streaming over traditional TV and cable.

The AMPTP said Guild data showed the median number of weeks of employment for a writer on a streaming series is between 20 and 24, which pays a minimum of $91,000, plus future residuals of more than $28,000 for a half-hour script and more than $41,000 for a one-hour script.

Writers note that they have to pay their agents and lawyers from their salaries and that they may not find a writing gig for the rest of the year after their 24 weeks of pay.

The strike comes at a challenging time for media companies.

Conglomerates are under pressure from Wall Street to make their streaming services profitable after pumping billions of dollars into programming to attract subscribers.

The rise of streaming also has eroded television ad revenue as traditional TV audiences shrink.

On Thursday, Paramount Global, the studio that released hit TV show "Yellowstone" and the "Mission: Impossible" movies, reported weak earnings from investments in streaming and softness in the ad market. The company's shares plummeted 28%.

The strike has shut down production of late-night talk shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live&nbsp;and could disrupt the fall TV season. Drew Barrymore dropped out of hosting this Sunday's MTV Movie &amp; TV Awards in sympathy with the strike.

"I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie &amp; TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike," Barrymore said in a statement.

Segments that Barrymore already aired are expected to be shown during the awards ceremony, and she has agreed to host the event next year.

Hollywood studios push back against striking writers' claim of 'gig' workforce

More than 11,000 television and film writers have gone on strike for the first time in 15 years following the breakdown of negotiations between the Writers Guild of America and Hollywood studios, the guild says. The walkout began at 12:01 a.m.

Hollywood writers' strike: The fear of Artificial Intelligence

Hollywood writers and studios battle over the future of AI

On Monday, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) declared that 11,500 unionised screenwriters will be going on strike and all scriptwriting will immediately cease, as talks with studios and streamers on pay and other conditions have ended without a deal.

This dispute over fair pay has pitted thousands of Hollywood writers against major studios like Disney and Paramount as well as OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon and Apple, shattering 15 years of labour peace in America's entertainment business.

Negotiations between studios and the writers began in March, however, they&nbsp;failed to reach a new contract before the writers'&nbsp;current deal expired just after midnight on Tuesday. All script writing is to immediately cease, the guild informed its members.

The board of directors for the WGA said that writers are facing an "existential crisis" and voted unanimously to call for a strike, effective at the stroke of midnight.&nbsp;

"The companies'&nbsp;behaviour has created a gig economy inside a union workforce, and their immovable stance in this negotiation has betrayed a commitment to further devaluing the profession of writing,"&nbsp;the WGA said in a statement.

"From their refusal to guarantee any level of weekly employment in episodic television, to the creation of a ‘day rate’ in comedy variety, to their stonewalling on free work for screenwriters and on AI [artificial intelligence] for all writers, they have closed the door on their labour force and opened the door to writing as an entirely freelance profession. No such deal could ever be contemplated by this membership."

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the trade association that bargains on behalf of studios and production companies, signalled on Monday that negotiations fell short of an agreement before the current contract expired. The AMPTP said it presented an offer with "generous increases in compensation for writers as well as improvements in streaming residuals".

In a statement, the AMPTP said that it was prepared to improve its offer "but was unwilling to do so because of the magnitude of other proposals still on the table that the guild continues to insist upon".

The labour dispute could have a cascading effect on TV and film productions depending on how long the strike persists. But a shutdown has been widely forecast for months due to the scope of the discord. Last month, the writers voted overwhelmingly to authorise a strike, with 98 per cent of the membership in support.

All script writing is to immediately cease, the guild informed its members. The board of directors for the WGA said that writers are facing an "existential crisis" and voted unanimously to call for a strike, effective at the stroke of midnight. Also read: Lionel Richie gets coveted seat at King Charles III's coronation "The companies' behaviour has created a gig economy inside a union workforce, and their immovable stance in this negotiation has betrayed a commitment to further devaluing the profession of writing," the WGA said in a statement. No such deal could ever be contemplated by this membership." The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the trade association that bargains on behalf of studios and production companies, signalled on Monday that negotiations fell short of an agreement before the current contract expired. The AMPTP said it presented an offer with "generous increases in compensation for writers as well as improvements in streaming residuals". Also read: Aerosmith's last hurrah: Iconic rock band embarks on final tour after 50 years In a statement, the AMPTP said that it was prepared to improve its offer "but was unwilling to do so because of the magnitude of other proposals still on the table that the guild continues to insist upon". The labour dispute could have a cascading effect on TV and film productions depending on how long the strike persists. But a shutdown has been widely forecast for months due to the scope of the discord. Last month, the writers voted overwhelmingly to authorise a strike, with 98 per cent of the membership in support. Whenever someone wins a huge jackpot, all eyes are on that person to see what he or she does next with the money. And when it comes to largest sum in the history of powerball, it's pretty natural for everyone to have their eyes glued to the person whose life appears 'set'.

Edwin Castro, the winner of USD 2.04 billion powerball lottery, has made his first move. He has chosen to buy a house near Hollywood celebrities on the Hollywood Hill. The purchase of five-bedroom, six-bathroom mansion has cost Castro a cool USD 25.5 million. It's an amount that'll make most of us stare at it with our mouths wide open, but for a billionaire like Castro, this is merely a few per cent of his enormous wealth.&nbsp;

When he starts living there, he can boast of sharing neighbourhood with Hollywood majors like Ariana Grande, Dakota Johnson, Jimmy Kimmel and more.

So what are the amenities at Castro's plush pad?

An infinity pool, a wine cellar, a movie theatre, a games room, a gym, a sauna, a steam shower and more.

The sale of the mansion was reportedly closed on March 1.

The infinitely lucky Castro bought his lottery ticket from a humble convenience store in Los Angeles locality of Altadena. The cost? Mere 2 dollars.

When he won the lottery, he was given an option of receiving the prize money in installments for 29 years. But Castro decided to cash-in and went for lump sum windfall of all that money.
