Amidst turmoil in the Congress-JD(S) coalition in Karnataka, senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily on Saturday hit out at Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy over his 'village stay programme'&nbsp;stating that "simply sitting" after becoming a chief minister or minister does not work.

"Simply sitting after becoming a chief minister or minister does not work. It is important to concentrate on schemes and their implementation. Chief ministers or ministers roaming villages does not work," Moily said.

As part of his 'Grama Vaastavya'&nbsp;or 'village stay programme', Kumaraswamy had on Friday spent the night at the Government Higher Primary School in Chandraki village along with other ministers. He was seen sleeping on the floor.

"Ministers should be responsible for people. They should think about it. Governance should go to people...not only chief minister or ministers... Simply going to the people does not work," the former Union Minister said targetting Kumaraswamy.

Analysing Congress-JDS alliance's major drubbing in the state in recent Lok Sabha elections, Moily said the lack of interest of ministers in working on the ground is one of the main reasons for the loss in the general election.

"Government is not working responsibly and I think that is one of the reasons for the defeat in the election. They (CM and ministers) should realise that they should call a Cabinet meeting to discuss it. They should discuss debacle.. but I do not think these people (Cong-JDS) are thinking about it seriously," he said.

In Karnataka, the BJP had won 25 of the 28 seats along with an Independent backed by it leaving just one seat each to Congress and JD(S).

BJP is the single largest party with 105 members in the 225 member Karnataka Assembly, while the ruling coalition has 117 members with 79 legislators from Congress, 37 from JD(S) and 1 from BSP.

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who kick-started his village stay campaign 'Grama Vastavya 2.0' from Gurmitkal in Yadgir district on Friday, denied reports of him getting a "5-star treatment" in a village stating that he was ready to sleep on the road.

"What 5-star arrangements? Ready to sleep on the road. Want to ask the Opposition if I cannot have this basic facility, how will I work every day? A small bathroom was built. I will not be taking it back with me,"&nbsp;Kumaraswamy said.&nbsp;

Kumaraswamy said during a press conference here in Chandraki village.

Kumaraswamy's remarks come in response to a report that he was being given a luxurious treatment at the village. Prior to his visit, renovation was done in the bathroom of a lodge he was supposed to stay.

On being asked about it, Kumaraswamy said: "It will help kids here. I came here on an ordinary bus. I did not come in a Volvo bus. I do not need to learn anything from BJP. I have slept in a hut as well as in a 5-star hotel. When my father was Prime Minister, I slept in Grand Kremlin Palace, Russia. I have seen everything in life."

The Chief Minister also said that gimmicks were for the Opposition and that for him working on the ground was important. "Some of my friends are asking why I am holding the 'village stay programme', they can sit in Vidhan Soudha and work. I would like to say that gimmicks are for the Opposition, not for me," he said.

During his visit, Kumaraswamy also interacted with school students to understand the problems faced by them.

"The meaning of coming to school is that through education there will be more development. Before I came, all officers went around villages and created awareness and identified beneficiaries of various schemes. All issues of the villagers are resolved now," he said.

Talking about the plight of the farmers in the state and loan waiver schemes meant for them, Kumaraswamy said: "I have detailed information on loan waivers. Rs 100 crore will be released to Kalaburagi District Central Cooperative Bank. The decision will be taken by the cooperative minister for new loans to farmers."

When questioned over the possibility of mid-term polls, the JD(S) supremo said 'There is no doubt that it will be held. They had promised to support this government for five years. But their behaviour is out in the open for everyone to see. People are aware of this'.

He also slammed the Congress saying the behaviour of the party " has not been appropriate".

Gowda's statements came just a day after reports indicated&nbsp;that former CM Siddaramaiah had suggested to Rahul Gandhi to break away from the coalition as it was doing more harm than good to the Congress party. Though Siddaramaiah denied making such suggestions, his previous clashes with chief minister Kumaraswamy and HD Deve Gowda did not let it slide away.

While speaking at an event on Tuesday HD Kumaraswamy said that he was in immense pain while managing the government in the state.&nbsp;'I can't tell you the pain. From outside I may be the CM. But every day I'm going through pain, but if I tell you who'll solve the problems of the people?’ said Kumaraswamy on June 18.&nbsp;

However, reacting to his father's statement on mid-term polls the Chief Minister said that Deve Gowda was talking about urban local body elections and that he is confident that the government will run for another &nbsp;4 years.

The fresh round of tensions come in the backdrop of cabinet expansion where two independents H Nagesh and R Shankar had been inducted. Both the independents had withdrawn support to the government in January 2019 amidst dissidence that threatened to bring down the government and lasted for several days. Rewarding the dissidents has angered many senior leaders, especially within the Congress, many of whom have gone public with their anger. Former Minister Roshan Baig was also suspended for indulging in anti-party activities as he accused Siddaramaiah and KC Venugopal for being responsible for Congress’ downfall in the state.

"I promise I will fulfil your expectations. I can't express the pain I am going through every day. I want to express it with you, but cannot. But I need to solve the pain of people of the state. I have the responsibility of running the government smoothly," he said at an event in&nbsp;Channapatna in Karnataka.

This was not the first time when Kumaraswamy had an emotional outburst at a public event.

In May 2018, Kumaraswamy said that he was at mercy of the Congress because JD(S) did not get an absolute majority. A month later in July, the chief minister burst into tears at a public rally stating that he was not happy being in the top post and was swallowing the pain like ‘Vishakantha’ (Lord Shiva), who drank poison.

However, senior Congress leader and former Karnataka chief minister refuted the reports of any rift between JD(S) and Congress. "There is absolutely no threat to the government in Karnataka, there is no problem. They (BJP) are trying desperately but they will not succeed," he said.&nbsp;

We need to have more discipline in Congress party," said Rao.

The delegation included former chief minister Siddaramaiah and Karnataka minister DK Shivakumar.

The state unit president also said that very soon a co-ordination committee meeting will be convened.

"We are expecting very good results on May 23, there will be a new government in Delhi. There has been misrule in the country because of five years of Narendra Modi government and people are going to send him out," Rao added.

Lately there were statements from Siddaramaiah`s supporters against chief minister H D Kumaraswamy with the statements suggesting that there could be trouble for him after the results are out.

Kumaraswamy himself took a dig at Siddaramaiah, a former JD(S) leader, saying Congress veteran Mallikarjun Kharge missed the bus for chief ministership in the party.

Karnataka has a total of 28 Lok Sabha seats. Kumaraswamy was accompanied by former prime minister HD Deve Gowda in the temple.

While addressing a public rally in Madduru on April 11, Kumaraswamy had said, "Those who safeguard the borders are not children of rich people. They are children from poor families who cannot afford two square meals. However, here is a Prime Minister who politicises their ultimate sacrifice."

A video clip of Kumaraswamy's remark was later tweeted from the official handle of Karnataka BJP.

The Chief Minister, however, denied having made any such comment and accused the BJP of distorting the original video.

"BJP is up to their old tricks again. They posted another edited video with false interpretation to malign me. I had said that not all who join defence forces are rich. The PM should not play with the lives of jawans to get votes. I never said that jawans are in the army just for livelihood," he had tweeted.

The same video clip was referred by Prime Minister Modi at a rally on April 12.

PM Modi had said,&nbsp;"You (Kumaraswamy) can't escape saying your statement was misinterpreted. You said what was there in your heart. It is such an insult to the armed forces of the country."

PM Modi at his rally in Mandi alleged that Congress does not take pride in brave acts carried out by the armed forces personnel.

"Entire country is proud of India`s prowess but Congress cannot digest it. They do not trust our brave sons," he said.

Modi accused the grand old party of abusing him for allowing the armed forces to conduct cross border operations.

He said,&nbsp;"In 2016, when brave sons of India carried out a surgical strike, Congress namdar started abusing me, instead of Pakistan. After (Balakot) air strike, Congress namdar and his courtiers are engaged in abusing Modi."

"Do not forget that Congress and its 'mahamilavati'&nbsp;(highly adulterated) allies publicly called the Army chief a 'gali ka gunda'. They call IAF chief a 'liar'," Modi added.

He also raised the 1984 Sikh riots issue to attack the Congress.

All four Lok Sabha seats of Himachal Pradesh will go to polls in the last phase of seven-phase elections on May 19. The counting of votes will take place on May 23.&nbsp;

Karnataka Chief Minister and JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy Sunday met AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal here to discuss political developments in the state, amid coalition worries and dissidence within alliance partner Congress surfacing again.

The leaders reportedly discussed the threat by rebel Congress MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi to quit the party along with legislators close to him, recently concluded Lok Sabha polls in the state and preparations for the May 19 by-polls to Chincholi and Kundgol assembly segments, sources said.

They are also said to have discussed the strategy to be adapted to pacify the disgruntled MLAs, who may pose a threat to the coalition government.

Kumaraswamy had on Thursday taken stock of the situation with his deputy G Parameshwara and senior Minister D K Shivakumar.

In another development, Yeshwanthpura Congress legislator S T Somashekara has reportedly convened a meeting of "like-minded" MLAs on April 30 to seek their suggestions to find a solution to the present political situation in the state.

The scheduled meeting has irked some Congressmen, with party MLC G Raghu Achar slamming Somashekar and asking him to discuss any issues he may have with the party leadership.

However, an MLA close to Somashekar, not willing to speak in detail, said they would discuss some issues faced by MLAs under the coalition government and also long-pending development work.

Somashekar, also chairman of the Bangalore Development Authority, had said in January that Congress Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah should again be made chief minister and that development work had come to a grinding halt.

His comments had irked Kumaraswamy, who had even threatened to step down.

Reacting to a question about the meeting called by Somashekar, Karnataka Congress President Dinesh Gundu Rao said he was not aware of it and would gather information.

The meeting might have been called with good intentions, he said.

"A meeting of MLAs close to him (Somashekar) might have been called to strengthen the party. Ours is not a Hitler-like party or one which follows that style of politics... There is independence to hold such meetings in the interest of the party," he said.

Speculation about the longevity of the coalition government has again come to the fore as the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls drew to a close Tuesday, with state BJP chief B S Yeddyurappa predicting its collapse after the May 23 election results.

There are talks within political circles that any adverse results for the coalition in the Lok Sabha polls, which they fought in the alliance, despite resentment among the grass root workers and leaders of both the parties, would have its implications on the longevity of the government.

Adding to this was the threat by Jarkiholi, who has been hobnobbing with the BJP for some time now, that he along with other MLAs would resign from the Congress soon in bulk, which has caused fear among the ruling coalition leaders as it would trigger the "number game" in the assembly.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with Venugopal, Rao expressed confidence about "good results" in both the Lok Sabha polls and assembly by-election in two constituencies.

"We will win more than 20 seats (of total 28) in the Lok Sabha polls," he said.

He said though the media was talking about a Modi wave, there was an "undercurrent" in favour of the Congress.

The Congress has fielded Subash Rathod from Chincholi and widow of former Minister C S Shivalli- Kusumavathi from Kundgol for the May 19 by-polls.

The Janata Dal (Secular) is supporting Congress candidates in both the constituencies.

The BJP has named Avinash Jadhav from Chincholi and Chkkangoudra Siddangouda Ishwargoud from Kundgol.

The by-poll to Chincholi was necessitated as Umesh Jadhav, Avinash's father, quit as Congress MLA and joined the BJP to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Gulbarga, while the Kundgol fell vacant following the death of MLA and Minister C S Shivalli.

Monday is the last date for filing nominations for the May 19 by-polls, for which results will be declared on May 23, along with the Lok Sabha poll results.&nbsp;

Facing turmoil in the ruling coalition that has cast a shadow over the stability of his government, Kumaraswamy had Friday released the audio clip in which Yeddyurappa is purportedly trying to lure JDS MLA Naganagouda through his son.

"I am stating from this place... If it is proved that it was not Yeddyurappa who had spoken and that it is mimicry or parody by Kumaraswamy, then it is not about his retiring, I will retire," the chief minister said at Dharmastala, a holy place in Dakshina Kannada district.

Kumaraswamy also said that those who "played games" with the presiding deity of Dharmastala, Lord Manjunatha, would incur his wrath.

"Invoking the name of Lord Manjunatha Swamy, he could not get protection... He (Yeddyurappa) had to resign within one month (as chief minister)," the Chief Minister said.

Kumaraswamy, who visited the shrine later, pledged before the deity that he stood by the charges made by him against the Chief Minister in the last six to seven months.

According to the tradition followed at the temple, aggrieved parties stand before the deity and take a pledge on the issues they have been contesting, after payment of Rs 11 as fee.

As per the custom, the temple authorities only facilitate the exercise but do not interfere.

The political war over charges of horse-trading had escalated Friday with Kumaraswamy releasing the audio clip hours before presenting the Congress-JDS coalition government's budget for 2019-2020 in the assembly.

Yeddyurappa, who is at the vortex of the row over his alleged bid to poach the ruling coalition MLAs for the past few weeks, had dismissed the clip as "fake" and a "concocted story".

Kumaraswamy had said that during the purported conversation, Yeddyurappa had also spoken about a "Rs 50 crore offer to book" the assembly speaker.

In the clip, a male voice is heard offering money and ministerial berth, besides assuring Naganagouda's son Sharan Gouda about "taking care" of the Speaker and the judges in case of the anti- defection law being invoked.

Yeddyurappa had dismissed the claim by the chief minister that he had spoken in the audio about a "Rs 50 crore" offer to the assembly speaker.

"I will retire from politics if it (the allegation) is proved. If I had spoken like this (about the speaker), if it is proved, I will resign as an MLA and quit politics," he had said.

As his government completed seven months in office, the JD(S) leader downplayed reports of contradictions within the coalition and said he would overcome all the "bitterness" smoothly.&nbsp;

"Both of us (Congress-JD(S)) should go together (in Lok Sabha polls) is our opinion. Because the reason behind forming this government (in Karnataka) is to stop the BJP from coming to power and improve the atmosphere in the country..." Kumaraswamy said when asked whether the JD(S) would go it alone if seat-sharing talks fail.

He said after the formation of the coalition government in the southern state, a lot of changes had taken place in the country's political landscape, including BJP's downslide and Congress victory in some bypolls and assembly elections in three states.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Seat-sharing is expected to be a litmus test for the Congress-JD(S) combine, mostly in the old Mysuru region constituencies, where the JD(S) is a dominant force in the Vokkaliga heartland and the Congress has its sitting MPs.

Reiterating that the coalition intends to face the Lok Sabha polls together, the Karnataka chief minister said leaders of both the parties are expected to discuss and come to a final decision later this month.

"Our national president (H D Deve Gowda) feels that after the government formation, for everything two-third (for Congress) and one-third (for JD(S)) concept was adopted like in the ministry or board corporation appointments. There are 28 seats...They (Congress) should take two- thirds and give us one-third, this is what his feeling is, and mostly, I feel they will also agree," he said.&nbsp;

Asked whether his party's demand for 12 seats was negotiable, Kumaraswamy did not give a direct response. He, however, said the two-third and one-third was the Congress' formula for the coalition.

Congress and JD(S) had bitterly fought the May 2018 assembly polls but joined hands as the polls threw up a hung verdict.

"Some may say that it (coalition) may survive only till parliament elections. I want to say that after the parliamentary election also the government that will be formed in Delhi and the environment that will be created will lead to a situation where the Karnataka government continues to work safely," the chief minister said.

Meanwhile, Kumaraswamy accused the BJP of attempting to destabilise his government by trying to poach coalition MLAs.&nbsp;

"I know who they (BJP) are approaching, what they are offered to MLAs. I am collecting all the news and doing whatever (possible) from my side to see to that BJP does not disturb the government..." he said.

Kumaraswamy said the coming together of BSP's Mayawati and SP's Akhilesh Yadav was a "strong combination" and it may scuttle and slow the BJP's speed in Uttar Pradesh.

He also claimed that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's image has "diminished", while Lalu Prasad Yadav-led RJD was getting sympathy, and in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, the BJP did not perform well as it did the last time.&nbsp;

Asked about possible cracks in the anti-Modi front, the chief minister said, "I feel a strong combination may emerge against the BJP. I also feel that the 'mahagatbandhan' may emerge as an alternative to national parties".&nbsp;

Regarding projecting Rahul Gandhi as the prime ministerial face of the anti-BJP combine, Kumaraswamy said Deve Gowda had announced JD(S) support to the Gandhi scion and that "others will also come on board".&nbsp;

"I feel after the results, everyone will agree on a common leadership despite differences," he said.&nbsp;

Kumaraswamy also termed the Centre's latest move of providing reservation to economically backward among the general category as a "desperate" step ahead of polls.&nbsp;

Congress shouldn't treat JD(S) as 'third-grade citizen' in seat sharing: Kumaraswamy 

It was nothing less than a soap opera when 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections took a dramatic turn and despite BJP emerging as the single largest party, two arch rivals - Congress and JD(S) formed government in the state.

Putting aside their differences, the two parties came together to form the government even after BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa had taken oath as the chief minister.

The coalition won the trust vote and HD Kumaraswamy replaced Yeddyurappa as the chief minister. However, soon after the Congress-JD(S) alliance came to power, Kumaraswamy 'overflowing emotions' were at public display.

In May 2018, Kumaraswamy said that he was at mercy of the Congress because JD(S) did not get an absolute majority. A month later in July, the chief minister burst into tears at a public rally stating that he was not happy being in the top post and was swallowing the pain like ‘Vishakantha’ (Lord Shiva), who drank poison.

Downplaying Kumaraswamy's statements as mere emotional outbursts,&nbsp;JD(S) had then claimed that there was no rift between the coalition partners.

However, this time Kumaraswamy's statement on the murder of a JD(S) worker crossed all acceptable lines. The chief minister was caught on tape instructing someone (reportedly a police officer) to avenge the worker's killing.

"I don't know how you will handle it (the case).. because it was your responsibility. I am actually disappointed because it (the murder) brought a bad name. He (who was murdered) was a good person.. There is no problem if you shoot such people mercilessly," he was heard saying.

His party, thereafter, issued a clarification saying that it was an 'emotional reaction' and not orders. However, it's extremely irresponsible for a coalition head and chief minister to give provocative statements. Such remarks fuel the enmity between the rival groups. &nbsp;

Karnataka government, under the leadership of Kumaraswamy, is responsible&nbsp;for the law and order situation in the state, and not to instigate police and public.

A complaint filed against Kumaraswamy says that such emotional orders are uncalled for and a clear violation of constitutional provisions. The complaint termed the incident a scary development.

Meanwhile, his emotional statements didn't end here. At a recent&nbsp;event, Kumaraswamy swore on his son to assure farmers of waiving off their loans.

In his defence, Kumaraswamy says he is an emotional person, and thus, reacts on human-centric issues.&nbsp;

It was a godsend for both Congress and JD(S) to form a government in the state. The chief minister's emotional outbursts damage the government credibility. It affects not just his image but also of the alliance partner - Congress.

"Mahadeshwara Hill Saluru Math seer Pattada Immadi Mahadeshwara Swamy or Devanna Buddhi connived not only to take over the temple trust but also to defame the existing trust members," he told reporters in Chamarajanagar.

The seer was in control of the temple trust till 2017, but was sidelined later, which infuriated him, the officer said.

On orders of the seer, the 35-year old woman allegedly arranged for pesticide and her husband and his friend mixed it in the prasad while it was being prepared, he said.

15 died and more than 100 people are still in hospitals after consuming the poisonous prasad on December 14 at Sulvadi at an event to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony for construction of the tower of the Kichchugutti Maramma Devi temple.

He said the temple was under the total control of the seer till April 2017 generating huge money for him. However, at the insistence of local villagers and devotees, a trust was formed for expansion of the temple.

"The seer was upset with the formation of the trust without his wish as his source of income almost dried up. Since then, shadow boxing between the temple management and the seer began," he said.

In October this year, the trust decided to build the 'gopuram' (tower) and revealed its plan to the seer, who readily volunteered and got an action plan for Rs. 1.5 crore from a temple architect in Tamil Nadu, he said.

The seer allegedly planned to mint money but the trust discarded his plan, saying that it was a sheer wastage of money and prepared another for Rs. 75 lakh and decided to hold the groundbreaking ceremony on December 14, which irked him, the officer said.

The seer directed the woman to mix poison in the prasad to defame the temple management and avenge his insult, the officer claimed.

On December 14, the two men had poured 15 bottles of pesticide in the prasad after sending away the cooks, he said.

The cooks returned and noticed a bad smell. They misled the cooks by saying that it was smell of edible camphor added to the prasad.

"Mahadeshwara Hill Saluru Math seer Pattada Immadi Mahadeshwara Swamy or Devanna Buddhi connived not only to take over the temple trust but also to defame the existing trust members," he told reporters in Chamarajanagar. The seer was in control of the temple trust till 2017, but was sidelined later, which infuriated him, the officer said. On orders of the seer, the 35-year old woman allegedly arranged for pesticide and her husband and his friend mixed it in the prasad while it was being prepared, he said. 15 died and more than 100 people are still in hospitals after consuming the poisonous prasad on December 14 at Sulvadi at an event to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony for construction of the tower of the Kichchugutti Maramma Devi temple. He said the temple was under the total control of the seer till April 2017 generating huge money for him. However, at the insistence of local villagers and devotees, a trust was formed for expansion of the temple. "The seer was upset with the formation of the trust without his wish as his source of income almost dried up. Since then, shadow boxing between the temple management and the seer began," he said. In October this year, the trust decided to build the 'gopuram' (tower) and revealed its plan to the seer, who readily volunteered and got an action plan for Rs. 1.5 crore from a temple architect in Tamil Nadu, he said. The seer allegedly planned to mint money but the trust discarded his plan, saying that it was a sheer wastage of money and prepared another for Rs. 75 lakh and decided to hold the groundbreaking ceremony on December 14, which irked him, the officer said. The seer directed the woman to mix poison in the prasad to defame the temple management and avenge his insult, the officer claimed. On December 14, the two men had poured 15 bottles of pesticide in the prasad after sending away the cooks, he said. The cooks returned and noticed a bad smell. They misled the cooks by saying that it was smell of edible camphor added to the prasad.

“It is suspected that the prasad was laced with poison. A team would be constituted to conduct a probe. The samples of the Prasad have already been sent to the lab. The exact reason would be ascertained only after receiving the reports," Chamarajanagar Deputy Commissioner B B Kaveri said.

Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy announced an initial compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the deceased, also&nbsp;the government will pay for treatment charges and ordered the Director General of Police to investigate further and report the matter immediately.

Drawing a parallel between present day's political environment and the one that existed during 1977, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar said a united opposition, just like 40 years ago, can take on the might of a single party.

"In 1977, the downfall of one party started, and at one point, the government collapsed. A similar situation can be a possibility now if the opposition comes together," Sharad Pawar told media persons here.

The ruling Congress lost the general election in 1977, held just after the removal of nearly two-year-long Emergency.

Morarji Desai-led coalition won that election and remained in power until 1980.

The NCP supremo's comments came days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost bye-elections in Kairana and Noorpur seats in Uttar Pradesh.

The Lok Sabha Kairana seat was won by Rashtriya Lok Dal's candidate, Tabassum Hasan, supported by the joint opposition, while Noorpur assembly seat was taken away by the Samajwadi Party.

Kumaraswamy will aim to prove his majority putting an end to the political turmoil prevailing in Karnataka over the government formation.&nbsp;

Karnataka's recently concluded state assembly election witnessed the Bharatiya Janata Party emerging as the single largest party with 104 seats (only eight seats short of the simple majority mark of 112). The Congress secured 78 seats and the JD(S) 37 seats. JD(S) and Congress, along with the support of two independent candidates, stitched up a post-poll alliance with a total of 117 MLAs.

Even though the Karnataka Governor invited the BJP to form the government with a time period of 15 days to prove their majority on the floor of the house, the Supreme Court in an interim order directed the floor test to be held in just two days, even after Yeddyurappa had taken oath as the Chief Minister of the state.

Although BJP's Yeddyurappa was sworn-in as Karnataka's Chief Minister, he was unable to garner the required number of votes to form Government in the state and resigned before the top court-ordered floor test.

HD Kumaraswamy was sworn-in as the 24th chief minister of Karnataka on May 23, marking the beginning of the JD(S)-Congress alliance in the state.

Karnataka: Chief Minister Kumaraswamy brims with confidence ahead of floor test

A day ahead of the trust vote, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara today said the Congress-JD(S) coalition was yet to discuss modalities about H D Kumaraswamy continuing as Chief Minister for a full five year term.

"We have not yet discussed those modalities," he said in response to a question whether Kumaraswamy will be the Chief Minister for full five-year term.

Speaking to reporters here, he said "we are also yet to decide on what portfolios have to go to them and what should be with us, then five years term- whether they should be or we should also...All those modalities we have still not discussed."

When asked again whether Congress was okay with giving Chief Minister's post to JD(S) for full a five-year term, Parameshwara, also the KPCC chief, said "...After discussing... Looking at the pros and cons (we will decide), our main intention is to give good administration."

Ahead of his swearing-in, Kumaraswamy had dismissed reports about his party working out a power-sharing formula of heading the government for 30 months each, with its coalition partner the Congress, saying "No such talks have taken place."

Responding to a question about several leaders being unhappy over party's choice for the Deputy Chief Minister post and on issues relating to portfolios, Parameshwara said, no one has sought any position from him or Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

"I have seen reports about (this) only in the media," he said.

Ruling out any differences between the leaders, he said there was nothing wrong in asking for a position.

"In Congress party, there are several leaders who are capable of becoming Deputy Chief Minister or Chief Minister...That's the asset of the Congress party."

"It is left to the party high-command to decide on who has to be given what position in this situation when we are in a coalition government," he said.

Asked about senior Congress leader D K Shivakumar being unhappy and holding a separate meeting with a few MLAs, Parameshwara said, "all MLAs are together and we will be successful in the floor test."

"Discussions, group meetings may have happened or not, but above all the fact is that we are united. I can say only this," he added.

Reports said Shivakumar, who was also a contender for the deputy chief minister's post, was unhappy with the party leadership.

Shivakumar, who emerged as a key figure in keeping the party MLAs together before the trust vote of BJP's Yeddyurappa government, was reportedly upset over not getting the Deputy CM post.

About his continuation as KPCC president, Parameshwara said he has not heard anything from the high command on the matter, but he might have to opt for one position.

Asked about the demand that Shivakumar be made party chief, Parameshwara said, "it is a happy thing if he becomes president as an experienced politician and leader will lead the party."

On whether there will be another Deputy Chief Minister along with him, he said was not aware of it.

"I don't have such information, and no such discussions have taken place."

After the floor test Congress and JD(S) leaders along with the Chief Minister would sit together to decide on a coordination committee, Parameshwara said.

"At the same time, we will form an empanelled group to formulate a common minimum programme," he said.

Claiming that the party was not defeated in the election as Congress' vote share was more than the BJP, Parameshwara said a committee would be formed and it would travel across the state and find reasons for the party's defeat.

He, however, tried to put the blame on EVMs for the party's performance in some areas.

"...There are several reasons that are being mentioned, some are even saying that EVMs were manipulated. We will get to know about these things when we go to the spot," he said.

Parameshwara said he felt that there may be a possibility that EVMs were manipulated.

He said the party has got information that in a few constituencies where there was 70-80 per cent Congress voters, there also BJP got the highest lead. "So there is a suspicion (about EVMs being manipulated)," he said.

He said he was not complaining that EVMs were manipulated in all 222 constituencies that went to polls.

Pointing out that his party had demanded ballot papers instead of EVMs ahead of the May 12 elections, Parameshwara said "In the days to come we will demand for ballot papers and we don't want EVMs."&nbsp;
