Savitri Jindal, contesting independently, has secured a significant victory from the Hisar Assembly constituency, winning by a margin of 18,941 votes. She defeated BJP's Kamal Gupta and Congress candidate Ram Niwas Rara. She previously represented the seat in Haryana assembly in 2005 and 2009. She had even served as a minister in Congress government. She then lost the 2014 polls but remained a powerful force.

Taking to X, Jindal thanked the voters of Hisar to show confidence in her.

“Abhaar Hisar Parivar” (Gratitude to the family of Hisar), the 74-year-old matriarch of the Jindal family wrote on X. Hisar is known to be the stronghold of the Jindal family, where it has won seats in 2005 and 2009 for Congress party.

Haryana assembly elections 2024: Savitri Jindal, India’s richest woman, back as lawmaker

Politics has taken a full circle in Indian politics. The assembly elections which should have gone unnoticed and uneventful has filled Indian politics with new energy and alignment. Elections in Haryana and Maharashtra have revealed few foundational truths about Indian politics. India today is functioning under BJP’s hegemony. It occupies both ideological and organisational dominance in the country’s politics. It is a fact but it does not mean that the reality of politics is immutable. From anti-Congressim of 1967, the country has moved into anti-BJPism phase. This Opposition should not be seen from the ideological prism alone. It should be seen from the prism of resistance to one hegemonic centre of power.&nbsp;

Two big national parties, Congress and CPM do not pose any significant challenge to BJP. It is similar to 1967 when both Jan Sangh and Swatantra Party, despite a national appeal, were electorally irrelevant in front of Congress party. Despite Parliamentary strength, Jan Sangh backed by RSS and Swatantra Party - constituting primarily of Congress dissidents - could not dislodge Congress from its premium position. It is similar to 2019 when national parties opposed to BJP are almost irrelevant today.

Though what is common in both periods is that push back to both BJP and to Congress in 1967 took place when national and regional parties of different ideologies came together to defeat the ruling hegemony. Tall socialist leader, Ram Manohar Lohia today is reviled for legitimacy it provided to RSS. He was the first person to understand that without a broad range coalition, even short-lived, Congress cannot be defeated. He played an important role in bringing then various shades of Opposition and Jan Sangh together to fight elections against Congress in various states in north India. The combination was short-lived but for the first time, the non-Congress government came to power in north India stunning everyone in the Congress party. Many criticised Lohia for mainstreaming RSS and taking an unprincipled stand in politics. Today a lot of critics have gone against Congress for compromising its ideology for ramping up a coalition with NCP and Shiv Sena against BJP in Maharashtra.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The commonality in the context of 1967 and 2019 is that the push back came from regional players who created alliances with so-called national parties. In October 2019, the stars of two assembly elections were JJP in Haryana and NCP of Maharashtra. BJP had to compromise with JJP in Haryana as the government was formed with former's support. &nbsp;

In Maharashtra, the push back came from Shiv Sena which wanted to break out of BJP. &nbsp;Though BJP is of the view that coalition will fall apart and they can occupy bigger space in the state. The fact is that in politics dominant status is always tenuous and contestable. It is this push back which should worry BJP. Next year BJP will not be fighting Congress in Delhi and Bihar. It will be pitted against AAP in Delhi and RJD in Bihar. Even in Jharkhand, BJP is dealing with a lot of smaller parties. Congress in Jharkhand is also a junior partner to JMM. So, again BJP is pitted against JMM led opposition in the state which goes to polls in next few weeks.

Even in Maharashtra and Haryana, Congress fought back under regional leaders. National Congress was irrelevant. Sonia Gandhi did not campaign at all. One can say that Congress fought as regional units disconnected from the national leadership.

Today, the opposition is being criticised for making a compromise on ideology to push back BJP. Jan Sangh and BJP during there expansion phase compromised a number of times. The compromise came in 1967, 1977 and 1989. In all three experiments, BJP had to contain its ideological commitments. During 1998 and 1999, BJP had to put Ram Janam Bhoomi Andolan and abrogation of Article 370 at the back burner. BJP even went into an alliance with PDP in Kashmir to break a political taboo that BJP can never come to power in a Muslim dominated state.&nbsp;

Today, Indian politics must show resilience. Indian politics must demonstrate that space for opposition exists. Nothing can be expected from Congress but regional parties by creating broad alliances with Congress and Left can definitely ensure that multi-party character of the country remains dynamic. It is not to say that democracy is coming to an end but every citizen must become truly vigilant if the Opposition begins to collapse under its own internal contradictions. The development in Maharashtra is a positive development for democracy as it shows that every inch of power in India remains contested and local and regional articulation of India remains as relevant as it was when republic came into existence.

Is 2019 another 1967 of Indian politics? Regional parties more effective than national opposition

It is high time that such a charade is put to an end forever. Election after election, the absurd pretence has been thrust on the people in the form of the so-called exit polls and countless hours of mundane analysis on something which is a far cry from reality. Soon after the polling is over, broadcasting channels go gung ho-over their predictable election outcome without any iota of shame when they are so off the mark when the final results come in.

In a country as vast as India, is it advisable to bank on the opinion of a few voters leaving a polling station after they have cast their vote? What is the guarantee that the voter is not lying? Moreover, in many instances, it has been found that there is a pronounced contrasting pattern of voting in constituencies. Do the media channels cover each and every constituency? Importantly, a very small sample of population is covered for exit poll and a very few constituencies are targeted. Predicting the results of an election with around 900 million voters is awfully difficult. This is the reason why there is a boomerang effect on such predictions.

The case in point is the 2004 Exit Polls when almost all the major television channels went horribly wrong when they predicted the return of Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s NDA government. To their shock, the Congress-led UPA emerged victorious. Again in the Delhi assembly elections in 2015, the predicted victory margin of the Aam Aadmi Party was nowhere close to the reality when it bagged 60 of the 70 assembly seats. And in the latest case, all pollsters, except the India Today, predicted the humungous victory of the Manohar Lal Khattar government between 71 to 80 seats in the 90-member House. The performance of Khattar-led Bharatiya Janata Party was nowhere close to the expectations as it could not even achieve a simple majority leading to the hung house. The Congress, which most exit polls predicted to win between 11-12 seats, went on to win 31 seats.

What has often been seen that a media channel propounding the cause of a particular political party tends to defend as well as predicting its victory? And when the shocking election results are announced, the channel would not eat the crow. It is an open secret that most of the Indian media channels, barring a very few, are biased and they tend to overzealously favour a particular political party (no prizes for guessing), often jeopardising their authenticity.

When the ludicrous exit polls are beamed, it has a cascading effect. Besides the usual spectacle in the news channels, there is eruption on social media. They too join the party, take over from the channels and start expressing their political views. Amidst all this frenzy, who gets martyred? Investors! The stock exchanges too react to the exit polls and sometimes a fortune is wiped out. The markets open disastrously if a defeat is predicted for the incumbent ruling party or the possibility of a rag-tag coalition government.&nbsp;

Given the vast difference between the predicted and actual results, these Exit Polls should do well to widen their sample size to arrive at a more realistic opinion.

Why Exit Polls in India often go wrong?

Polling began on a peaceful note on Monday morning across all 90 seats of Haryana and 288 constituencies of Maharashtra amidst tight security, officials said.

The voting in all constituencies will continue till 6 pm in the evening.

The electoral fate of over 4400 candidates- 1169 in Haryana and 3237 in Maharashtra will be sealed in EVMs by the voters who will exercise their democratic franchise in the assembly elections.

In Haryana, 19,578 polling stations have been set up whereas there are 96,661 polling booths in Maharashtra for citizens to cast their votes.

In Haryana, 2,987 polling booths have been marked as vulnerable whereas 151 critical polling stations have been identified, the live footage of which would be monitored in the control room set up at the headquarters in Chandigarh.

More than 40,000 Haryana Police personnel, over 13,000 paramilitary personnel and more than 20,000 Home Guards and Special Police Officers have been deployed for conducting the elections in the state.

The assembly election in Haryana will witness a multi-cornered contest among BJP, Congress, Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Jannayak Janta Party (JJP).&nbsp;

For Maharashtra Assembly elections, 40,000 police personnel will be deployed in Mumbai and drones will be used for surveillance as part of security arrangements, Mumbai Police had earlier said.&nbsp;

Maharashtra police will also maintain strict vigil throughout the state with its personnel deployed for election duties in all districts along with home guards, companies of CAPF and CRPF for the polling day.

BJP is contesting 150 seats in 288-member Maharashtra Assembly while its ally Shiv Sena has fielded 124 candidates. The remaining seats have been left for smaller allies.&nbsp;

Congress is contesting the polls in alliance with Nationalist Congress Party in Maharashtra. Campaigning in Maharashtra and Haryana for the Assembly elections, 2019 concluded on Saturday.&nbsp;

The Model Code of Conduct had come into force on September 21 after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced Assembly election dates.

During the campaign period, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister and BJP chief Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi were among national leaders who campaigned in the two states. NCP chief Sharad Pawar campaigned extensively in Maharashtra.

The elections are significant as it is the first assembly polls after Modi steered the BJP-led NDA to a resounding victory in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year for a successive second term at the Centre.&nbsp;

It is also the first assembly polls after the BJP-led government`s decision to repeal Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.BJP is in power on its own in Haryana and in alliance with Shiv Sena in Maharashtra.

Congress is contesting the polls in alliance with Nationalist Congress Party in Maharashtra. Campaigning in Maharashtra and Haryana for the Assembly elections, 2019 concluded on Saturday. The Model Code of Conduct had come into force on September 21 after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced Assembly election dates. During the campaign period, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister and BJP chief Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi were among national leaders who campaigned in the two states. NCP chief Sharad Pawar campaigned extensively in Maharashtra. The elections are significant as it is the first assembly polls after Modi steered the BJP-led NDA to a resounding victory in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year for a successive second term at the Centre. It is also the first assembly polls after the BJP-led government`s decision to repeal Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.BJP is in power on its own in Haryana and in alliance with Shiv Sena in Maharashtra. The BJP on Sunday released its manifesto and made a host of promises to woo the electorates ahead of forthcoming Haryana Assembly elections.

In the manifesto titled 'Mhare sapno ka Haryana'&nbsp;(my dreams of Haryana), the party made a plethora of promises ranging from launching Haryana start-up mission, constitution of a new 'Yuva Vikas and Rozgar'&nbsp;ministry and one All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), doubling of farmers` income by 2022 and increase in pension.

It was released in the presence of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, BJP national working president J P Nadda and other party leaders.

For the farmer in the predominately agricultural state, the BJP promised to ensure that every farm receives water and their owners be granted tested seeds of high yielding variety.

The party said that every crop will be bought at Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the benefit of the government schemes will be directly transferred to the bank account of the farmers.

It reiterated the promise made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to double the farmers'&nbsp;income by 2022 in the manifesto.

According to the manifesto, every vegetable market will have a testing lab and micro-lab will be built in every five villages for the same purpose.

Polyclinics will be established in every district for the check-up of the animals.

To give a push to the start-up ecosystem, it promised to initiate a state start-up mission, for which four entrepreneurship centres will be constituted.

A whopping Rs 500 crore will be spent on the skill development of over 25 lakh youth.

District Employment Centre will be upgraded to Model Career Centre.

Loan without the guarantee would be made available for the education purpose by the government.

Among other things for the benefit of the youth, the BJP promised to constitute 'Yuva Vikas and Rozgar'&nbsp;Ministry. To give a push to the sports, stadium and gymnasium will be constructed in all the villages.

Taking into consideration the health of the state, the party has promised to constitute one All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the state, medical colleges in every district.

The BJP said that the seats in the medical college will also be increased.

It also promised to increase the number of Jan Aushadhi Centres to provide quality medicines at affordable prices to the masses.

Another reform in the health sector proposed by the party is to make Haryana malnutrition-free and Tuberculosis (TB)-free and create 2,000 wellness centres.

Keeping in mind the safety of women, the BJP said that "Pink bus service" will be started for them.

"Antyodaya Ministry" for the upliftment of the weakest section of the society will be formed.

Pension for the senior citizens will also be increased by one thousand from Rs 2 thousand to Rs 3 thousand.In lines with PM Modi's Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, the BJP in Haryana aims to provide housing to all by 2022.

The state has a total of about 19,500 polling stations in 10,309 locations. It goes to polls on October 21.

Agriculture, youth, healthcare prime focus in BJP's Haryana manifesto

Former Haryana chief minister and senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda has announced a committee&nbsp;to decide&nbsp;the political future of his faction.

There were speculations that Hooda may announce his own political outfit or join another party, however, he opted for the 25-member panel to decide the future course of action for him.

"A committee will be formed in a day or two. Convenor will call a meeting after the committee is formed. I will do what the committee will say, if it asks me to leave politics, I will leave politics as well," said Hooda at 'Maha Parivartan Rally' in Rohtak on Sunday.

The committee will include 13 sitting MLAs and 12 other important state leaders. He is likely to announce the committee's decision within a week.

Hooda's loyalists have been demanding that the former chief minister be made the Haryana party chief in place of Ashok Tanwar.

Bhupinder Singh Hooda also slammed the Congress for its stand on the revocation of Article 370, saying the party has lost its way.

He said he belongs to the family of freedom fighters and for them national interests are supreme.

Asking the people of Haryana to oust&nbsp;Manohar Lal Khattar government, he announced various sops like - increasing old-age pension, giving free power up to 300 units for BPL families and making wheat and rice available at Rs 2 per kg for such families.&nbsp; 
 
Meanwhile, Khattar also kicked off Jan Ashirwad Yatra on Sunday. He will reach out to people of the state during the 22-day journey till September 8. Assembly elections will be held in Haryana later this year.

Bhupinder Singh Hooda slams Congress, forms committee to decide his political future

It is a fight straight out of&nbsp;a Bollywood thriller. The head of the AICC communication department, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/randeep-surjewala-congress-candidate-for-haryanas-jind-assembly-bypoll-189305">Randeep Singh Surjewala, who defeated </a>the sitting chief minister of Haryana OP Chautala from Narwana in 2005 will be locked in a strong contest against his grandson Digvijay Chautala in 2019.

The difference is that Randeep defeated Chautala from Narwana and this time he has been asked to fight from Jind. Currently, he is a sitting MLA from Kaithal.

The story does not end here. The fact is Randeep was initially reticent but the party pushed him to fight from Jind as it had no candidates who could give both BJP and the newly launched JJP which is headed by MP Dushyant Chautala, who is another grandson of OP Chautala, a strong fight.

Jind has traditionally been dominated by Jai Prakash, Surjewalas and Chaudhary Birendra Singh. The only issue was that Randeep is&nbsp;a sitting MLA who is&nbsp;pretty comfortable in his current seat.

Sources say that initially a section of Congress under Randip, PCC chief Ashok Tanwar and Kiran Chaudhary wanted independent MLA Jai Prakash’s son Vikas to be fielded from the constituency.

However, sources added that the proposal was opposed by former chief minister Bhupendra Singh Hudda. In this political quagmire, the choice ultimately zeroed down to Randeep who subsequently accepted to fight.&nbsp;

With the decision to fight, Randeep emerged as a fresh face supported by many leaders opposed to Hudda within the organisation. The irony is that the Congress could not find one local candidate to put a fight in Jind constituency and had to push Randeep who had been requesting Congress president Rahul Gandhi to be sent back to Haryana for state politics.

Sources say that with him as a candidate, Congress has a chance to remain in either number-1 or number-2 position in Jind.&nbsp;

“Any other candidate if fielded from the constituency would have been relegated to number 4 position and that would have been suicidal for the party before the Lok Sabha elections,” said a source in the Haryana Congress. The decision was taken in the context of very poor performance of the Congress in the elections for mayors held in 2018. BJP registered a clean sweep in all five big cities.

BJP has fielded Dr Kishan Midda. Raj Kumar Saini who has been at the forefront of the anti-Jat politics is also deploying a candidate which would lead to intense fight within non-Jat segment.

Despite being a tough fight, Randeep is all set to gain a bigger foothold in Haryana Congress.

In case he wins the elections, it will mean good-bye to Bhupendra Singh Hudda as the tallest leader of Haryana, if&nbsp;he loses respectably, he would be in a position to consolidate his position as the CM face of Haryana for the 2019 assembly elections. However, this would not mean that battle outside the party would melt away.
