<p>The Parliament on August 3 had passed the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (Amendment) Bill, 2019, which increases the threshold of annual passenger traffic for major airports to over 35 lakh with Civil Aviation stating that the government was committed to privatisation of Air India as its debt has become totally unsustainable.</p>

<p>Air India's net loss in 2018-19 is provisionally estimated to be Rs 8,556.35 crore.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The minister said various measures, including enabling the swift transition of Jet Airways aircraft to other airlines, have been taken to improve the aviation sector.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The full service carrier Jet Airways shuttered operations in April due to cash crunch. Minister Puri last month had said that the first meeting of the group of ministers (GOM) has met and takeN some decisions about Air India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday said he was "appalled" to hear a recent statement made by UK MP Tan Dhesi regarding the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.</p>

<p>"My attention has been drawn to a recent statement made by Tan Dhesi, a British MP from Slough about Article 370. I am appalled. If my attention was drawn to this prior to our meeting, there would have been no meeting," Hardeep Singh tweeted.</p>

<p>Puri's remarks were backed by the chairman of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Foreign Affairs Department Vijay Chauthaiwale.</p>

<p>"Thanks a lot Mr @HardeepSPuri. Mr @TanDhesi, you cannot take anti-India stand in UK and then keep it under the wraps while visiting India," Vijay Chauthaiwale said.</p>

<p>Recently, Dhesi had met Puri and Union Minister Som Prakash where he had called for increasing frequency of flights between India and the UK.</p>

<p>Earlier this month, Dhesi had lauded UK's opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn for his comments on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir following the scrapping of special status.</p>

<p>"The situation in Kashmir is deeply disturbing. Human rights abuses taking place are unacceptable. The rights of the Kashmiri people must be respected and UN resolutions implemented," Corbyn had said.</p>

<p>New civil aviation minister said on Friday he is confident that problems at grounded Jet Airways Ltd will be solved, in the government's first comments on the debt-laden carrier since it was reelected last month.</p>

<p>"(We are) very confident we can solve the problems at the now defunct carrier," Hardeep Singh Puri said on the sidelines of a conference in New Delhi, in comments widely interpreted as referring to Jet.</p>

<p>Massive debt and suffocating price competition forced what was once India's biggest private-sector airline to halt operations in April at the cost of thousands of jobs, and resulting in higher airfares across the industry.</p>

<p>The airline and its lenders have been searching for new investors, while employee unions have been calling for government intervention. The government, however, has largely been quiet on the issue since its election victory.</p>

<p>Puri has assumed office at a time of distress in areas of Indian aviation. Last year, the government unsuccessfully sought a buyer for money-losing state-owned carrier Air India Ltd.</p>

<p>"We have made mistakes in civil aviation in the past which we need to correct," Puri said.</p>

<p>Jet's share price was 9% lower in early afternoon trade. The stock sunk in the last two trading sessions after India's largest stock exchange limited speculative trading in the firm.</p>

In 2009, it was the lone&nbsp;proposer and did not get any support. &nbsp;In 2016, India again proposed the listing and it was co-sponsored by UK, US, France but&nbsp;it was blocked by China. In 2017, US, UK and France moved&nbsp;the proposal but China blocked the move again.</p>

<p>Slamming the opposition Congress on its Pakistan policy, he said: "Basic approach towards dealing with Pakistan was completely flawed. Pakistan milked you on the nuclear strategic doctrine. When they attacked you in 26/11 and we lost&nbsp;300 people, you should have given a befitting response."</p>

<p>Explaining the current government's policy, Puri said, "Mr Modi made it very clear... we will give you a befitting reply if terror emanates." and the "Modi government has been able to alter that entire reality" by getting global support from a diverse set of countries such as Saudi Arabia, UAE, China and "US and France in any case".</p>

<p>The move in February&nbsp;saw global support with 14 out of 15 members of UNSC&nbsp;backing the move for the listing of Masood Azhar.</p>

<p>The proposal was moved by US, UK, France and co-sponsored by Australia, Bangladesh, Italy and Japan. In fact, after the Chinese hold in March, the French had announced they would put a freeze on the assets of Azhar and will raise the issue with the European Union.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Currently, a text has been circulated among all members of the European Union for listing of Azhar as a terrorist under EU jurisdiction.</p>

<p>India already has a 515-kilometre functional network of metro tracks in various cities and 15 more will soon have over 660 kilometres of tracks for rapid urban transportation, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Monday.</p>

<p>Interacting with the members of the Consultative Committee attached to the Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) Ministry, Puri spoke about new urban transport initiatives in India.</p>

<p>According to a statement released by the housing and urban affairs minister, the state governments and union territories have been advised to prepare and submit the Detailed Project Report (DPR) in line with the provisions in the Metro Rail Policy 2017.</p>

<p>"Hardeep S Puri, Minister of State (I/C) for Housing and Urban Affairs has stated that more than 664 kms of metro rail projects in 15 cities are presently under various stages of implementation, while more than 515 kms of metro line are already operational in India," the statement said.</p>

<p>He said several new cities are now aspiring to have metro rail systems.</p>

<p>To bring together the technology and service providers, policy makers, officials in urban transport from India and abroad, the 11th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference is planned from November 2-4 at Nagpur, with the theme "Green Mobility" to disseminate up-to-date and best urban transport practices information to the cities, he added.</p>

<p>The National Capital Territory of Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Second (Amendment) Bill gives immunity to slums and some unauthorised constructions till December 31, 2020. The immunity under the existing Bill ends on December 31.</p>

<p>Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said if the Bill is not passed, it will lead to &quot;unprecedented chaos&quot; in the national capital.</p>

<p>The legislation will give cover against punitive action on &quot;as is where is basis&quot; until December 2020, he said.</p>

<p>Puri also attacked the Sheila Dikshit government for not coming out with a proper policy on the matter and said, &quot;it was the failure of governance of a very high order&quot;.</p>

<p>Singh said the legislation provides that no action will be taken by any local authority till December 31, 2017, with respect to encroachments or unauthorised developments as of January 1, 2006, unauthorised colonies, village Abadi areas that existed on March 31, 2002, and where constructions took place till February 8, 2007.</p>

<p>The sealing exercise by the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee had created panic among the slum-dwellers and traders in part of the city, with the legislation expected to allay their apprehensions to a large extent.</p>

<p>Participating in the debate on the bill, BJP MP Parvesh Varma attacked the AAP government in Delhi, accusing it of not coming out with a policy on unauthorised colonies or slums.</p>

<p>Ramesh Bidhuri, BJP MP from South Delhi, referred to the hike in water tariffs and alleged that the Arvind Kejriwal government had deceived the people. He also blamed the Congress for its failure to come up with a policy on the unauthorised construction issue.</p>

<p>TMC MP Saugata Roy was to speak on the Bill but did not. He said it has become a practice to pass the Bill in the din, referring to the uproar by Congress members over controversial remarks made by union minister Anant Kumar Hegde.</p>

<p>CPI(M)&#39;s Mohammad Salim also emphasised that a Bill cannot be passed amid din.</p>
