India: Supreme Court greenlights proceedings against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in 2015 sacrilege case

<p>Jailed Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has sought parole for over a month for farming at his fields in Haryana's Sirsa, officials said Saturday.</p>

<p>The 51-year-old is currently lodged at Sunaria jail in Rohtak after being convicted in two rape cases and murder of a journalist.</p>

<p>Following his application for the parole for 42 days, the jail superintendent has written to the Sirsa district administration. In a letter dated June 18, the official sought a report whether releasing Gurmeet on parole would be feasible or not.</p>

<p>In the communique, the jail superintendent has mentioned that Gurmeet's conduct in the jail has been good and he has not violated any rule.</p>

<p>The district administration has been asked to submit a report to Commissioner, Rohtak Division, with a copy marked to the jail superintendent.</p>

<p>On receiving the letter, Sirsa Police has approached the Revenue Department to ascertain how much land the Dera chief owns.</p>

<p>"We have asked the Revenue Department to provide record as to how much land is in his name. The details are awaited," Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sirsa, Rajesh Kumar told PTI over phone.</p>

<p>In August of 2017, the Dera chief was sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping two women. A special CBI court in Panchkula had in January this year also sentenced him and three others to life imprisonment for the murder of a journalist over 16 years ago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He further stated that they had protested against the &quot;injustice&quot;, but it did not change the situation.</p>

<p>Last month, Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by a special CBI court&nbsp;<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/special-cbi-court-convicts-gurmeet-ram-rahim-singh-in-rape-case-19498">after being convicted for raping&nbsp;two&nbsp;devotees</a>&nbsp;in 2002.</p>

<p>CBI judge Jagdeep Singh had pronounced two sentences of 10 years rigorous imprisonment in each of the two cases with both sentences to be consecutive totalling&nbsp;20 years in jail.</p>

<p>He&nbsp;was also fined Rs 15 lakh in each of the two cases, of which Rs 14 lakh each was set to go to the two victims who were part of his sect and were coerced into sexual relations with him.</p>

<p>The CBI&nbsp;had sought life imprisonment for the Dera chief and had moved an application asking for a maximum jail sentence. As had the two followers who accused Ram Rahim of raping them 15 years ago.</p>

<p>The quantum of sentence was decided by special CBI judge Jagdeep Singh after hearing arguments from both sides.</p>

<p>The arguments took place at Rohtak&#39;s Sonaria jail keeping in mind the explosive security situation and the rampage which had occurred after Ram Rahim&#39;s conviction on Friday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The defence had argued that Ram Rahim was&nbsp;a social worker who has worked for the welfare of the people and asked the judge to take a lenient view.</p>

<p>The special CBI judge, who arrived at the Sunaria jail in a special helicopter,&nbsp;allotted 10 minutes each to both sides to put forth their arguments.</p>

<p>Haryana chief minister ML Khattar has said that the law and order situation in the state is being monitored and will not be allowed to deteriorate.&nbsp;</p>

<p>No untoward incident was reported from Sirsa after the pronouncement of the quantum of sentence, a senior government official said.</p>

Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh asked people to accept the sentence and let peace prevail.</p>

<p>He also held a security review meeting with senior police officials and bureaucrats.</p>

<p>The chief minister said security personnel were on alert and would not allow the occurrence of any untoward incident.</p>

<p>&quot;There is total normalcy, our forces are on their toes. Will not let any untoward incident happen,&quot; Amarinder Singh said after the sentence.</p>

<p>Rohtak prison turned into a fortress ahead of the hearing. Thousands of paramilitary troops and anti-riot police blocked all roads leading to the prison with the army on standby.</p>

<p>Large gatherings have been banned in Rohtak, whose residents have been warned to stay indoors today. Mobile internet services remain suspended.&nbsp;</p>

<p>All schools and colleges in Haryana were closed today.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Curfew has been&nbsp;imposed in Punjab&#39;s Barnala from 9pm today to 9 am tomorrow, a top police official from the city said.<br />

Heavy security measures are in place in Sirsa, the headquarters of the Dera chief. Two cars were torched by Dera Sacha Sauda supporters in Phoolka area of Sirsa ahead of the court decision.</p>

<p>The army conducted a flag march in Sirsa after the sentencing.</p>

<p>Navdeep Singh Virk, IGP Rohtak Range said the police had recovered around &quot;hundred objectionable items including batons&quot;&nbsp;from Sonipat&#39;s Bahalgarh Dera.</p>

<p>&nbsp;After his conviction on Friday, Guru Ram Rahim&#39;s followers went on a rampage in Panchkula and Sirsa, leaving&nbsp;38 people dead and over 260 injured.</p>

<p>The Punjab and Haryana High Court had ordered the Haryana government to make arrangements at the district jail in Sunaria for the judge to pronounce the quantum of sentence.</p>

<p>The high court had directed that necessary arrangements be made for the security and safe transport by air of the judicial officer and two of his staff members.<br />

He has been sentenced for 10 years in each of the cases of rape against him. Both sentences will be consecutive, the godman's lawyer said

<p>The Dera&#39;s chief and self-styled godman, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, was on Friday convicted of raping two of his women followers. The case dates back to 2002.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ram Rahim was convicted by a CBI court in Panchkula.</p>

<p>His followers, who had been gathering in the town -- Panchkula is a satellite township of Chandigarh -- went on the rampage immediately after the verdict.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thirty-two people have died in the violence that followed, and over 250 have been injured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ANI reported that 29 people had died in Panchkula and three in Sirsa.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Army however said that it was not going into the Dera headquarters, and that there was no such plan as of now.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;Military is not going inside Dera, there is no such plan as of now,&quot; ANI reported Rajpal Punia, GoC, 33 Division, Hisar, as saying.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Haryana Police on Friday said that the situation in Panchkula district is under control following the ruckus that took place after the conviction of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh by a Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Court of Panchkula.</p>

<p>The Deputy General of Police (DGP), BS Sandhu, while addressing the media said, &quot;The situation in Panchkula district is under control. The Haryana Police has been successful to control the crowd after the court verdict was announced.&quot;</p>

<p>In another update, Western Railways have cancelled six trains and partially cancelled two trains in the wake of law and order situation in Punjab and Haryana.</p>
