The current green plastic is made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is often converted into single-use items such as carpets and clothing.

But the company said that it is easier to reuse clear plastic than green one for new bottles.

“When recycled, clear PET Sprite bottles can be remade into [new] bottles, helping drive a circular economy for plastic," Julian Ochoa, chief executive officer of R3CYCLE —a recycling company that works with Coca-Cola Consolidated, said in a statement&nbsp;Wednesday.

However, cans and packaging graphics of Sprite will still be green, but its logo will change.

The lemon-lime soft drink has been packaged in green colour ever since it was first launched in the US in 1961. According to Coke, the drink has been one of its bestselling products.

Coke said the move to switch to the clear plastic bottle would help support “a circular economy for plastic packaging”.&nbsp;

In some foreign countries, Sprite has already switched to clear plastic bottles with specific flavours like cherry and sugar-free.

Coca-Cola also announced that the bottled water brand Dasani will be made from 100 per cent recycled PET plastic. The move will reduce plastic waste by 20 million pounds compared with what was used in 2019, according to the release.

The loss of less than 10% snow cover above treeline is significant, the scientists said. Mountain areas seem to be heating up around twice as fast as the average globally.&nbsp;More plants at high altitudes may threaten Alpine plants as they are adapted to harsh conditions but are not competitive, as per Rumpf. “The unique biodiversity of the Alps is therefore under considerable pressure,” said Rumpf. &nbsp;

“Previous analyses of satellite data hadn’t identified any such trend. This may be because the resolution of the satellite images was insufficient or because the periods considered were too short,” said Prof Antoine Guisan of the University of Lausanne. &nbsp;

Monday's announcement "shows our determination to play a leading role in this important new fuel," he added.

While burning hydrogen as a fuel emits just water vapour, most of the gas is made in a process that produces harmful emissions.

Companies and governments are increasingly putting emission-free green hydrogen at the centre of efforts to de-carbonise economic sectors that rely most on fossil fuels for their energy needs.

Ineos said its investment in electrolysis will be the largest ever in Europe, building plants in Norway, Germany and Belgium in the next decade.

Ineos operates businesses in the chemical, oil and gas industries, including extracting gas in the North Sea. It is also venturing into the automotive industry and launching manufacture of a 4x4 off-road vehicle.

The group is already Europe's largest operator of the electrolysis technology and has "extensive experience" in storing and handling hydrogen, according to its statement.

Stephanie Olson, an astrobiologist and professor at Purdue University Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences took to Twitter to share her experience of making her dog wear the Elizabethan collar.

When Olson woke up in the morning, she observed a strange green colour in the neck area of her dog. Alarmed by this, the Earth geochemist used her knowledge to figure out the reason behind this change of colour.

She observed that her dog, Olive, drools a lot and usually that saliva drips on the floor. However, since Olive was wearing a cone, the saliva funnelled down from the cone to her neck.

"Dog saliva contains iron porphyrins. Upon contact with oxygen, the iron is oxidized to iron oxide nanoparticles. Rust, essentially. This is why Olive and many other drooly dogs have rusty red staining by their mouths,"&nbsp;Olson explained.

Further, Olive slept with the cone in a posture that limited oxygen for her neck area. While the furry kid was asleep, the bacteria consumed all of the oxygen from the neck area that "prevented the red staining typically associated with dog saliva. Instead, green rust formed!," Olson detailed. "And the staining along her neck transitioned from rusty red on her chin to rusty green thanks to the combination of her unusually moist neck environment and sustained isolation from oxygen in the air—both symptoms of the cone."

While the green colour is not harming the dog, which the experts know of, Olson is worried if the colour will come off any time soon. &nbsp;

Residents and experts worry that the project is just the first step in accelerated development of the area, which is listed as a Wetlands of International Importance under an&nbsp;intergovernmental conservation treaty.

"We're going to keep fighting, because we fear that they will want to continue to develop and fill the lakes here to make a commercial plaza," said Maria Alvarado, 60, a member of a group campaigning against the project.

The splash of green in a vast urban sprawl has already been divided by one of the main highways skirting the city.

Activists filed several legal challenges and held demonstrations against the new bridge, which is being built at a cost of about $40 million and is almost completed.

"It's not just Xochimilco that loses -- the whole city loses," said Elia Solares, 65, a member of the campaign group.

'Enormous damage'

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum has defended the project, saying it will help traffic to flow more smoothly.

"It will be very important for the area ... both for public and private transport," she said last month, assuring residents that there was no ecological damage.

Her government has committed to restoring the wetland by planting endemic vegetation and connecting it with other lake areas.

"The wetland in this area of Xochimilco is going to be very important," she said.

But Luis Zambrano, a researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), fears the bridge will wreak destruction in a vital ecosystem.

"They're doing enormous damage," he said, warning that the project set a dangerous precedent.

"They're opening the door to the destruction of any ecosystem, no matter how protected it may be," he said.

Alvarado and her fellow campaigners plan to keep up their struggle to stop the bridge ever being used.

"We will not give up our fight," she said.

"Even if this bridge is already working, we will keep fighting against it being used."

The idea of forgiving debt held by poor countries in exchange for "green" investments gained ground this week during the spring meetings of the IMF and World Bank, with concrete proposals expected in time for a global climate summit this fall.

Low-income countries face a double crisis — they are under pressure to pay down their debt while also confronting environmental problems.

That makes them "highly, highly vulnerable," Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, said this week, adding that it thus "makes sense" for the world to pursue so-called "green debt swaps."&nbsp;

A World Bank spokeswoman underscored that point.

"The Covid-19 crisis has made it significantly harder for developing countries to tackle the rising risks posed by climate change" and environmental disasters, said the spokeswoman, who declined to be named.

With already tight budgets, these countries have had to use emergency financial assistance to address the severe impact of the pandemic and the resulting economic crisis.

"By enlarging the debt burdens of governments — which were already at record levels on the eve of the crisis — it has left them with fewer resources to invest in a recovery that will also put the planet on a more sustainable footing," the spokeswoman told AFP.

'Creative options'

A technical working group — bringing together representatives not only of the IMF and World Bank but also of the United Nations and the OECD — was launched this week to examine "creative options to help countries tackle these simultaneous challenges," the World Bank spokeswoman said.

"This work has only just begun," she said, "but we think a proactive approach is essential: we must look closely at how potential solutions to the challenges of climate and debt can be integrated to address the key development issues of our time."

While there is no timeline yet for announcing concrete measures, all parties involved are clearly pointing toward the COP26 climate summit to be held in November in the Scottish city of Glasgow.

"We are going to work with the World Bank. And by COP26 we will advance that option" of a debt swap, Georgieva said, adding that it will then be up to creditors and debtors to decide whether to take part.&nbsp;

For Thierry Deau, the founder and CEO of the Paris-based Meridiam group, which specializes in developing and financing infrastructure projects, if the green debt-swap option is pursued, it will have to be linked to clear "conditionalities" to ensure that debt relief in fact leads to the launching of green projects.

"The primary responsibility there on this debt relief is between the countries that are on both sides," he said.&nbsp;"There's a lot of politeness about this topic, and I think we have to stop that and create real true partnerships."

Their heavily tourism-dependent economies have seen revenues dry up as the coronavirus pandemic severely curtails world travel.&nbsp;

NASA in a report has said that its high-resolution satellites have shown that the world "is literally a greener place than it was 20 years ago" due to two emerging countries with the world’s biggest populations - China and India- leading in "greening on land".

"There are now more than two million square miles of extra green leaf area per year, compared to the early 2000s – a&nbsp; 5 per cent increase," the report asserted.

The report pointed out that although the land area used to grow crops hadn't changed since 2000's in China and India which was "more than 770,000 square miles" but the regions had increased both its "annual total green leaf area" and food production.

"Production of grains, vegetables, fruits and more have increased by about 35-40 per cent since 2000 to feed their large populations," NASA noted.
