The Competition Commission of India (CCI) ordered a full-blown investigation into Alphabet Inc's Google in April for alleged abuse of its Android platform to hurt rivals, but the complainants'&nbsp;names came to light only when the order was made public last week.

The case was filed by Umar Javeed and Sukarma Thapar, who work as research associates at the CCI, and Umar's brother Aaqib, a law school student who interned with the CCI briefly in 2018, their LinkedIn profiles showed. All three declined interview requests for this article.

Though it's unusual for CCI researchers to file cases with the watchdog, antitrust lawyers said, there is nothing wrong with it. They acted in their personal capacity, a senior government official said, adding that all are aged in their 20s.

"They deserve appreciation, they have done a commendable job," SL Bunker, a former senior member of the CCI, told Reuters on Monday. "The developments will be watched eagerly as the case involves many intricacies and its implications will be the world over."&nbsp;

The CCI didn't respond to a request for comment.

A recent antitrust case in the country against Google involved a matchmaking firm backed by top lawyers. The US&nbsp;company was fined $20 million in that case last year, though it is under appeal.

In the latest case, the three young informants relied on the European Commission's order from last year in which Google was fined $5 billion for forcing manufacturers to pre-install its apps on Android devices. Their complaint is against both Google LLC and the company's India unit.

The CCI's preliminary finding was that Google appeared to be dominant on the basis of the material brought forward by the informants, who were identified in the order as Android users.

Google didn't respond to an email seeking comment, but has previously said it would work with the CCI "to demonstrate how Android has led to more competition and innovation, not less".

The amount of any fine that could be imposed on Google if the CCI rules against it was not clear. Google's Indian unit posted revenue of more than $1.3 billion for the 2018 fiscal year, according to Indian media.&nbsp;

Umar has been working at the CCI since 2017 and obtained his law degree in 2014 from the University of Kashmir, while Aaqib is due to graduate from the Kashmir university this year. Thapar, who graduated from an Indian law school in 2015, joined the CCI last year, according to their LinkedIn profiles.

India's latest Google probe sparked by junior antitrust researchers

The senators noted that both agencies typically refrain from commenting on investigations that are not public "but these circumstances are far from typical. The significant public interest in and allegations surrounding the business conduct of Big Tech and the leaks concerning the clearance process relating to potential investigations of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google have made these matters highly unusual."

"Oh my god, I can't believe my eyes," one Facebook user commented under one of the many screen grabs of the false translation that went viral on Friday.&nbsp;

"The app intentionally mistranslates the English to 'so happy/content' instead of 'so sad'," added student Rachel Wong on Twitter. "I hope Google fixes this."

When AFP entered the sentence "I am sad to see Hong Kong become part of China" on Friday morning it did show the wrong translation, replacing sad with happy.&nbsp;

Searches involving some other combinations of countries or territories also reproduced the error.

An hour later, a correct translation was showing.

The company's hugely popular software tool uses complex algorithms and deep learning, as well as allowing users to make suggested translations to improve accuracy.

"Google Translate is an automatic translator, using patterns from millions of existing translations to help decide on the best translation for you," a spokesman for Google told AFP.&nbsp;

"These automatic systems can sometimes make unintentional mistakes like translating a negative to a positive."

Google translates ‘sad’ to ‘happy’ angering Hong Kong protesters against China extradition law

Google Calendar users were unable to access it on Tuesday as it faced technical issues in the US, UK and most of Europe.

'We are aware of the issues and working on a fix,'&nbsp;Google Calendar confirmed on its Twitter page.

"We're investigating reports of an issue with Google Calendar. We will provide more information shortly. The affected users are unable to access Google Calendar," the tech giant informed on its G Suite Status Dashboard.

According to the latest update on G Suite Dashboard, the problem may persist for another hour.

"We expect to resolve the problem affecting a majority of users of Google Calendar at 6/18/19, 11:10 PM. Please note that this time frame is an estimate and may change," it said.

Users who are were trying to access the were getting "Not Found" and "Error 404" message appearing on their screen. Users are facing the issue&nbsp;on both, app and website.

Other Google apps appeared to be unaffected by the outage.

Group of 20 finance ministers agreed on Saturday to compile common rules to close loopholes used by global tech giants such as Facebook to reduce their corporate taxes, a copy of the bloc's draft communique obtained by Reuters showed.

Facebook, Google, Amazon, and other large technology firms face criticism for cutting their tax bills by booking profits in low-tax countries regardless of the location of the end customer. Such practices are seen by many as unfair.

"The United States has significant concerns with the two corporate taxes proposed by France and the UK," US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Saturday at a two-day meeting of G20 finance ministers in the Japanese city of Fukuoka.

"It sounds like we have a strong consensus" about the goals of tax reform, Mnuchin later said.

"So now we need to just take the consensus across here and deal with technicalities of how we turn this into an agreement."

Mnuchin spoke at a panel on global taxation at the G20 after the French and British finance ministers voiced sympathy with his concerns that new tax rules do not discriminate against particular firms.

Big Internet companies say they follow tax rules but have paid little tax in Europe, typically by channelling sales via countries such as Ireland and Luxembourg, which have light-touch tax regimes.

The G20's debate on changes to the tax code focus on two pillars that could be a double whammy for some companies.

The first pillar is dividing up the rights to tax a company where its goods or services are sold even if it does not have a physical presence in that country.

If companies are still able to find a way to book profits in low tax or offshore havens, countries could then apply a global minimum tax rate to be agreed under the second pillar.

The path to a final agreement is still fraught with difficulty because of disagreement on a common definition of digital business and on how to distribute tax authority among different countries.

"There are differences between the United States and the United Kingdom over pillar one. As for pillar two, there are also differences in views within the Group of 7," said a senior Japanese finance ministry official present at the G20.

The G7 likely will not issue any communique at a meeting of the world's leading economic powers next month, according to the official. Still, several finance ministers at the G20 said on Saturday they needed to act quickly to correct unfair corporate tax codes or risk being punished by voters.

"We cannot explain to a population that they should pay their taxes when certain companies do not because they shift their profits to low-tax jurisdictions," French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said during the panel discussion.

The US government has voiced concern in the past that the European campaign for a "digital tax" unfairly targets US tech giants.

After listening to presentations by Le Maire and British finance minister Philip Hammond, Mnuchin said on Saturday G20 countries should issue "marching orders" to their respective finance ministries to negotiate the technical aspects of a deal.

"The further this trend develops, the bigger the collateral damage will be – particularly in Asia and the US, but the ripple effect will be significant across the globe."

The US government on Monday temporarily eased some trade restrictions imposed last week on China's Huawei, allowing the company to purchase American-made goods to maintain existing networks and provide software updates to existing Huawei handsets for 90 days.

But that was of little comfort for investors who are worried about increasingly acrimonious atmosphere between the world's two biggest economies.

Some US&nbsp;companies, such as Alphabet's Google and Lumentum Holdings Inc, have already started to limit services to Huawei.

"The determination of the US administration to paralyse China's aspirations to become a technology superpower is clear when you consider that its actions against Huawei are not only damaging to China’s technology sector, but also the US tech sector," Shah said.

Corporate earnings guidance provided to investors so far does not take into account the impact of the Huawei ban, said Nobuhiko Kuramochi, chief strategist at Mizuho Securities.

"The sales of semi-conductors will be curtailed at least in the short-term and companies will likely need to revise down their earnings," he said.

Markets showed scant reaction to speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, who dismissed comparisons between the rise of business debt to record levels in recent years and the conditions in US&nbsp;mortgage markets that preceded the 2007-to-2009 economic crisis.

In the foreign exchange market, major currencies were on the sideline for now.

The euro was under pressure ahead of the European election this weekend but was little moved at $1.1169, off Monday's low of $1.1150, its lowest level since May 3.

The dollar slipped slightly to 110.05 yen from Monday's near two-week high of 110.32 yen.

The British pound is listless near four-months, trading at $1.2728, just a stone throw from Friday's low of $1.2714, as an embattled UK Prime Minister Theresa May struggled to pull together a Brexit deal.

In mid-April, the CCI decided there was merit in the accusations made in the complaint and ordered its investigation unit to launch a full probe, one of the sources with direct knowledge of the matter said.

That decision, which was confirmed by the second source, has not been previously reported and the order calling the full investigation was not made public.

"It is a strong case for the CCI, given the EU precedent," said the first source. "The CCI has (preliminarily) found Google abused its dominant position."

The probe would be completed in about a year and Google executives would likely be summoned to appear before the CCI in coming months, the source said.

The CCI did not respond to a request for comment.

A Google spokesman said Android has enabled millions of Indians to connect to the internet by making mobile devices more affordable. Google looked forward to working with the CCI "to demonstrate how Android has led to more competition and innovation, not less", the spokesman said in a statement.&nbsp;

Reuters could not establish who filed the complaint, which involves more than one person.

Android, used by device makers for free, features on about 88 per cent of the world's smartphones. In India, about 99 per cent of the smartphones sold this year used the platform, Counterpoint Research estimates.

It remains possible that the CCI's investigations unit could clear Google of any wrongdoing. The amount of fine that can be imposed on Google if the CCI rules against it was not immediately clear.

The&nbsp;regulator has powers to impose a penalty of up to 10% of the relevant turnover of a company in the last three financial years if it is found to have abused its dominant position. In that case, Google's earnings linked to its web browser and the search engine could be considered to assess the fine, New Delhi-based antitrust lawyer Gautam Shahi said.

Google does not disclose its India earnings from its web browser or search engine.

"They can either change their conduct in India voluntarily or let CCI investigate. Voluntary change in conduct may have an impact on the quantum of penalty, if it's imposed," said Shahi.
