The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has removed the airline codes “G8” and “9W” assigned to Go First and Jet Airways after being non-operational, Mint reported.

IATA’s head of communications stated that in order to be considered for an IATA two-letter designator, an airline must be in operation. Early in May of this year, Go First Airlines stopped operating its commercial flights.

According to the IATA website, companies are given the airline designator code to use for bookings, schedules, timetables, telecommunications, ticketing, cargo paperwork, legal, tariffs, and other commercial and related traffic purposes.

“One of the requirements for a company to be eligible for an IATA two-letter designator is that the airline needs to be operating. As Go First ceased to operate commercial flights since early May 2023, it is currently not eligible for the IATA two-letter designator,” Mint quoted Albert Tjoeng, Head of Corporate Communications at IATA, as saying in a statement.

According to him, the two-letter designator and numeric codes will be blocked for a period of a year, after which Go First may apply to have the designator reinstated provided the conditions are satisfied.

The Go First management team, under the direction of the Resolution Professional (RP), filed a refund plan that called for a combination of payment through credit notes given to travellers and travel broker with settlements done using operating revenue.

The National Company Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) also handed the winning bidder for Jet Airways, the Jalan-Kalrock consortium, till September 30 to pay the Rs 350 crore ($ 42 million) in debts owed to the airline’s lenders.

The consortium’s request to apply Rs 150 crore ($18 million) from a performance bank guarantee towards the payment of 350 crore was also granted by the tribunal.

The NCLAT will take up the remaining issues after September 30th, including the one from the workers who are requesting the recovery of around 224 crore in unpaid wages.

The resolution plan for Jet Airways was approved by the NCLT on June 22, 2021. It was submitted by the Jalan-Kalrock consortium, which included Florian Fritsch and non-resident Indian Murari Lal Jalan. Jalan will own shares in Jet Airways through his investment holding company Kalrock Capital Partners Ltd., Cayman.

In April 2019, Jet Airways was forced to stop operations due to financial issues. However, due to ongoing disagreements between the consortium and the lenders, the transfer of ownership has been on hold.

Go First, whose lessors also include Standard Chartered's Pembroke Aircraft Leasing, SMBC Aviation and BOC Aviation, did not respond to a request for comment. It has previously said it aims to resume operations and raise investor funds, but the operations remain grounded.

The Indian budget carrier SpiceJet said on Wednesday (July 12) that top shareholder Ajay Singh would infuse USD 60.85 million into the airline as it aims to return to full operations.

About a fourth of SpiceJet's fleet has been grounded amid a string of weak quarterly results and fierce competition in the sector. The airline is scrambling to raise funds.

The fund infusion for SpiceJet has come at a time when Indian budget carriers are looking to take advantage of the vacuum left by Go First, a crisis-hit rival airline.

SpiceJet has said that it will issue shares, convertible securities or share warrants on a preferential basis to Singh. The deal will also open up credit facilities of 2.06 billion rupees (USD 25 million) under the government's emergency credit line guarantee scheme.

Singh, who is also SpiceJet's managing director, holds 50.6 per cent stake in the company.

"This investment will allow the airline to accelerate its growth plans and capture new opportunities in the market, grow its revenue and profits," Singh said in a press release.

In February this year, SpiceJet had announced plans to raise fresh capital of USD 300 million through issue of securities. It converted about USD 100 million in due into equity to an aircraft lessor.

SpiceJet is also fighting some lessors. These lessors are seeking to de-register their aircraft and also to initiate bankruptcy proceedings against the airline. SpiceJet is also entangled in a legal battle with a former investor for dues that are worth USD 46 million.&nbsp;

Late on Tuesday, media reports also said the airline was under "enhanced surveillance" by India's aviation watchdog. The airline said it had not received any such communication from the regulator.

SpiceJet shares are down around 20% so far this year, while rival IndiGo is up 36%.

Both flights and their passengers are still stranded in Surat as of the publication of this report.

India’s budget carrier Go First on Tuesday filed for bankruptcy before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and temporarily suspended flight operations on May 3 and 4 due to a "severe fund crunch".

Chief Executive Kaushik Khona said that flight operations will resume once the NCLT admits the application, PTI news agency reported. More than 5,000 people are employed with Go First.

“It is an unfortunate decision (filing for voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings) but it had to be done to protect the interests of the company,” he told PTI.

Go First said it has been forced to file for bankruptcy because of the recurring and persistent issues with the GTF (Geared Turbofan) engines supplied by Pratt &amp; Whitney (P&amp;W).&nbsp;

Khona said they have grounded 28 planes, which is more than half of its fleet, as a result.

Further, the company claimed that P&amp;W failed to repair those engines “and/or provide sufficient spare leased engines as it was required to do pursuant to its obligations under the relevant agreements between them."

Promoters have infused funds worth Rs 32 billion into the airline in the last three years and out of the total amount, Rs 24 billion was injected in the last 24 months. An amount of Rs 2.9 billion was pumped in April this year, the Wadia Group-owned airlines said.

Further, Go First said it has received significant support from the government's Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS).

"Even this collective and significant support has not been adequate to prevent the enormous damage caused by Pratt &amp; Whitney's defective engines.

The government has been informed about the airline’s decision, Khon said, adding that they will be submitting a detailed report to aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

"The grounding of close to 50 per cent of its fleet due to the serial failure of Pratt &amp; Whitney's engines, while incurring 100% of its operational costs has set Go First back by Rs 10,800 crore in lost revenues and additional expenses," it said.

The airline posted its biggest annual loss in fiscal 2022.

The latest development comes after reports that Go First was looking to raise funds and that Wadia Group was in talks to either sell a majority stake or completely exit its shareholding in the airline.

A GoAir&nbsp;flight had to be diverted after its windshield cracked mid-air due to bad weather on Wednesday (July 20). It was a Delhi-Guwahati flight. The flight landed safely after the diversion. India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said 30 such incidents take place daily.

"On average, about 30 incidents do take place, including go-around, missed approaches, diversion, medical emergencies, weather, technical and bird hits," the top DGCA official told news agency ANI.

"Most of them have no safety implications. On the contrary, they are a sine qua non of a robust safety management system," he added.

This was third incident of technical malfunction that involve GoAir&nbsp;planes in last two days.

On Tuesday, a Delhi-bound GoAir aircraft was rejected take-off from Leh due to a dog on the runway.

In separate incidents, two GoAir&nbsp;flights were diverted due to engine snags on Tuesday. DGCA said that the cases were being investigated and the aircraft grounded. They will take off only when they get clearance from the authority.

One of these flights was VT-WGA flight from Mumbai to Leh. It was diverted to Delhi due to engine no. 2 fault. Another flight was Go Air A320 aircraft VT-WJG &nbsp;from Srinagar to Delhi was taken back to Srinagar due to Engine no. 2 EGT over limit.

The DGCA mentioned that there have been reports of increased engineering-related occurrences in scheduled airlines in recent times. In order to ensure that airlines are adhering to the laid down standards, DGCA has conducted several spot checks in the recent past.
