The government of Berlin has chosen to offer a lakeside villa, once belonging to a prominent Nazi figure, at no cost due to the high expenses associated with its maintenance, as per The Telegraph (UK).

This property, situated in the rural area north of the German capital, has a troubling past as it was formerly owned by Joseph Goebbels, who was Adolf Hitler's propaganda minister. Authorities in Berlin have disclosed their intentions to give away the villa for free, according to the report.

Goebbels, a significant figure within the Nazi regime, held a key position in Hitler's inner circle and wielded considerable influence over Nazi propaganda efforts.

He was good at using newspapers, radio, and movies to spread Nazi ideas and control what people knew in Germany. He and his family died by killing themselves at the end of World War II, as per History.com.

The big house and land Goebbels owned, built in 1936, were used for different things, including his secret meetings with actresses.

Today, the Berlin government owns the property but struggles as its upkeep is expensive and it has a bad history linked to the Nazis.

Berlin's Finance Minister Stefan Evers mentioned that the state of Berlin is offering the property as a "gift" to anyone interested in "taking over the site."

Since 2000, the property has been empty, and the villa, situated approximately 10 miles north of Berlin, has significantly decayed. It now has broken windows and missing sections, requiring refurbishment.

Several options are being considered for the estate, including acquisition by the federal government or the neighbouring state of Brandenburg. Alternatively, it could be purchased by a private individual.

Germany, on Friday (May 3) blamed Russia for a series of cyberattacks and alleged that Moscow’s intelligence service was behind a cyberattack that targeted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s party Social Democrats (SPD), last year. The Russian Embassy in Germany has since denied these allegations.

Germany warns of consequences

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that a recent government investigation found that a cyberattack targeting members of the SPD had been carried out by a group known as APT28 which operates under “the military intelligence service of Russia”.

“We can now clearly attribute the attack to the Russian group APT28, which is controlled by the Russian military intelligence service GRU,” Baerbock told reporters during a visit to Australia.

She added, “In other words, it was a state-sponsored Russian cyberattack on Germany and this is absolutely intolerable and unacceptable and will have consequences.

APT28, also known as Fancy Bear or Pawn Storm, has been accused of dozens of cyberattacks around the world.

Last year, SPD announced that cybercriminals had targeted email accounts belonging to its executives, earlier in 2023.

According to German officials, hackers exploited a previously unknown vulnerability in Microsoft Outlook to compromise email accounts.

The German interior ministry also said that from December 2022 onwards SPD and companies in the logistics, defence, aerospace and IT sectors were targeted by Russian hackers.

In light of this report, Germany, on Friday summoned the acting charge d’affaires of the Russian embassy.

Czech Republic also accuses Russia of cyberattacks

Officials in the Czech Republic also levelled similar allegations against Russia. Czech government officials said some of its state institutions had been the target of cyberattacks blamed on APT28 who again exploited a weakness in Microsoft Outlook, last year.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser during a joint news conference in Prague with her Czech counterpart Vit Rakusan said such cyberattacks are “a threat to our democracy, national security and our free societies”.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) Tuesday (Apr 30) rejected a demand by Nicaragua to force Germany to stop sending military aid to Israel, which has been fighting a deadly war in Gaza against the Palestinian militant organisation Hamas since October 7. Nicaragua’s request to make Germany renew its funding to the UN aid agency in Gaza was also dismissed by the court in a 15-1 vote.

“Based on the factual information and legal arguments presented by the parties, the court concludes that, as present, the circumstances are not such as to require the exercise of its power ... to indicate provisional measures,” said Nawaf Salam, the court’s president.

Notably, the case against Germany has not been dismissed completely and will continue to be heard in court until it’s resolved. The court also raised concerns regarding the ongoing violence in Gaza.

The court “remains deeply concerned about the catastrophic living conditions of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, in particular in view of the prolonged and widespread deprivation of food and other basic necessities to which they have been subjected,” added Salam in his statement.

Germany vs Nicaragua

Nicaragua in its case against Germany argued that it was aiding Israel’s ‘genocide’ in Gaza by selling arms and providing other support.

Germany on the other hand says it has barely exported any arms to the Jewish nation since the war began on Oct 7 after the Hamas attacks.

Nicaragua’s case comes after South Africa filed a genocide case against Israel last year in the international court.

Germany's AfD under fire again: Maximilian Krah's aide arrested for spying in China

Three Germans have been arrested on suspicion of working with the Chinese secret service to hand over technology that could be used for military purposes, potentially helping to strengthen China's navy, German officials said on Monday.

The arrests came a week after Chancellor Olaf Scholz travelled to China to press Beijing on its support for Russia's wartime economy and to raise issues of intellectual property theft and fair market access.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the government was monitoring what she called a significant threat posed by Chinese espionage in business, industry and science.

"We look very closely at these risks and threats and have clearly warned and raised awareness about them so that protective measures are increased everywhere," she said in a statement.

In this case, the issue of German innovative technologies that can be used for military purposes was "particularly sensitive", she added.

Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said in a statement: "At the time of their arrest, the accused were in further negotiations about research projects that could be particularly useful for expanding China's maritime combat power."

The Chinese embassy in Berlin said Beijing firmly rejected accusations that it carried out spying activities in Germany.

"We call on Germany to desist from exploiting the espionage accusation to politically manipulate the image of China and defame China," a spokesperson for the embassy said in an emailed statement.

Prosecutors identified the suspects as Herwig F. and Ina F, a married couple who run a company in Dusseldorf, and Thomas R., described by prosecutors as an agent for an unidentified employee of China's Ministry of State Security (MSS).

The couple concluded a cooperation agreement with a German university through their company, which involved preparing a study for the MSS employee on machine parts that can be used for marine engines such as in warships, prosecutors said in a statement.

The suspects also purchased a special laser from Germany on behalf of and with payment from the MSS, and exported it to China without authorisation, according to the prosecutors, who did not specify what the laser could be used for.

The arrests were made on the basis of information gathered by Germany's domestic intelligence agency, prosecutors said.
