Russia will act to counter the planned US deployment of long-range missiles in Germany, as it regarded the NATO military alliance's actions as a serious threat to Russia's national security.

US to deploy long-range missiles in Germany by 2026

The United States will&nbsp;start&nbsp;deploying&nbsp;long-range&nbsp;fire capabilities in&nbsp;Germany&nbsp;in&nbsp;2026&nbsp;in an effort to demonstrate its commitment to NATO and European defence, the United States and&nbsp;Germany&nbsp;said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

The United States' "episodic deployments" are in preparation for&nbsp;longer-term stationing of such capabilities that will include SM-6, Tomahawk cruise missiles and developmental hypersonic&nbsp;weapons&nbsp;that have a&nbsp;longer&nbsp;range&nbsp;than current capabilities in Europe, the two countries said.

Both the Tomahawk and the Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) are made by RTX's Raytheon division.

Ground-based missiles with a&nbsp;range&nbsp;exceeding 500 kilometres were banned until 2019 under the Intermediate-Range&nbsp;Nuclear Forces Treaty signed by the Soviet Union's Mikhail Gorbachev and former US President Ronald Reagan in 1987.

It marked the first time the two superpowers had agreed to reduce their nuclear arsenals and eliminated a whole category of&nbsp;weapons.

Falling in line with the signatories,&nbsp;Germany, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic destroyed their missiles in the 1990s, to be followed later by Slovakia and Bulgaria.

The United States withdrew from the INF Treaty in 2019 saying that Moscow was violating the accord, citing Russia's development of the 9M729 ground-launched cruise missile, known in NATO as the SSC-8.

The Kremlin repeatedly denied the accusation and then imposed a moratorium on its own development of missiles previously banned by the INF treaty - ground-based ballistic and cruise missiles with&nbsp;ranges of 500 km to 5,500 km.

At the end of June, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow should resume production of intermediate and shorter-range&nbsp;nuclear-capable missiles after the United States brought similar missiles to Europe and Asia.

Putin said Russia had pledged not to deploy such missiles but that the United States had resumed their production, brought them to Denmark for exercises and also taken them to the Philippines.

Morning news brief: US to deploy weapons in Germany, Al-Baghdadi's wife sentenced to death, and more

Germany summoned Turkey's ambassador on Thursday over a Turkish football player's ultra-nationalist "wolf salute" at a Euro 2024 match, days ahead of a reported trip by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan to Berlin to attend his nation's next match.

UEFA, European soccer's governing body, has opened an investigation into Turkish centre back Merih Demiral's mimicking of the shape of a wolf's head with his fingers after scoring in a Euro Championship game against Austria on Tuesday evening.

The gesture is linked to the "Grey Wolves", an ultra-nationalist youth branch of Turkey's Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), an ally of Erdogan's AK Party.

"As Euro 2024 hosts, we want sport to unite," Germany's foreign ministry said in a post on X announcing that Turkey's ambassador had been summoned, a day after Turkey's foreign ministry did the same to Germany's ambassador to Ankara.

Turkey's foreign ministry said German authorities' approach to Demiral "involved xenophobia" and UEFA's probe was unacceptable. The ministry has defended the gesture made by Demiral as a historical and cultural symbol that did not target anyone during his celebration of joy at the match.

The German interior minister criticised Demiral's gesture on X, saying that "using the European Football Championship as a platform for racism is completely unacceptable".

Established in the 1960s, the "Grey Wolves" were involved in political violence between leftists and nationalists in Turkey that killed some 5,000 people around the time of a 1980 coup.

The group is outlawed in France and its symbol is banned in Austria. While the wolf salute is not banned in Germany, the group is under surveillance, according to the interior minister.

German and Turkish media reported that Erdogan plans to come to Berlin on Saturday for Turkey's Euro quarter-final match against the Netherlands.

Erdogan changed his schedule to attend the game, NTV and other Turkish media reported. He has been due to attend a summit of Organisation of Turkic States in Azerbaijan on Saturday.

The Turkish embassy in Berlin acknowledged the reports but said it had no information about Erdogan's official programme.

'Wolf' goal celebration at Euro 2024 creates ruckus as Germany summons Turkish ambassador

Tukriye's Merih Demiral has been banned for two matches due to his 'wolf salute' during the Euro 2024 last-16 clash against Austria. The ban has sparked a diplomatic confrontation between Turkiye and Germany.

Industrial orders in Germany dropped surprisingly in May for the fifth month in a row, raising questions about the outlook of the manufacturing sector in Europe's largest economy, according to the Federal Statistics Office.

Analysts had forecast a rise in orders, but instead, they fell by 1.6 per cent compared to the previous month.

This drop was validated by June PMI data for manufacturing, indicating that the sector continued to be in slow motion.

According to the test of the latest business climate index by Ifo Institute, the manufacturers were doubtful about the months ahead.

The record of the German Economy Ministry attributes the fall in orders to dull global trade and the absence of noticeable improvements in the demand for industrial goods.

They believe that a recovery in new orders is likely to hinge on the upturn in world trade situations and a gradual upturn in demand.

The specialists also included in this gloomy list the weakness of global industrial development, that reached the two leaders, the United States and China.

All these pains of the global economy would supposedly reduce constantly the German one with the absence of a short-term positive outlook.

Owners of the famous Trianon building in Frankfurt have filed for insolvency. This comes as the biggest economy in Europe reels with a severe property crisis.

Germany’s property sector contributes a fifth of the country's total output but has faced the test of high borrowing costs and dried real estate financing since mid-2022. Major developers have gone bankrupt in recent times, echoing the need for government intervention.

In 2023, around 294,400 apartments were built, far below the government’s target. The authorities approved 260,00 constructions, the lowest since 2012. In the first quarter of 2024, prices declined 5.7 per cent year-on-year. This marks the sixth consecutive quarter of decline in both cities &amp; rural regions. The housing construction backlog, apartments that have been approved but not yet built, has fallen for the first time since 2008.

Investors looking to diversify?

Investors are now sceptical about betting on major economies like Europe, China, and the US. This is because the demand for housing remains subdued due to rising costs. Especially for Europe, the abrupt end to cheap energy from Russia has hit German property demand. Europe is currently locked in a trade battle with China to ‘protect’ its domestic market from the influx of Chinese goods. However, the domestic market, especially in Germany, has been vocal about the potential harm lurking if such a tariff battle moves ahead. One of the reasons for this resistance is possibly a fragile situation at home. If consumption drives the economy, then your markets are pre-determined, and China is the largest consumer and producer in the world. Not only that, but it is also the biggest raw material market for EVs and other essential minerals. Isolation from China can further dent Europe’s growth prospects.

As for their reeling housing market, one can try China’s stimulus measures, though that also doesn’t seem enough, according to some analysts. China’s recent home prices &amp; sales continue to decline, showing no respite despite the government's intervention. Still, lowering borrowing costs can be a start. European Central Bank recently took a diversion from the US Fed's 'wait-and-watch' approach by lowering interest rates for the first time since 2019. Another possible solution is around immigration. While immigration is a hot topic in the UK before elections on 4th July, Other countries are equally feeling the pump. China and the European Union are locked in a trade battle over China's EV overcapacity. The European Commission plans to impose import duties on Chinese EVs, ranging from 17 per cent to 38 per cent, on top of its standard 10 per cent tariff for car imports.

As both countries agree on trade talks, let's see the possible outcomes in-store and the potential global implications.

What are provision measures?

Provisional duties can be imposed within nine months of starting the investigation. Definite duties, the deadline for which is November 3, is the time by which the EU has to conclude if the influx of Chinese EVs is hurting the EU's domestic industry.

Many European countries are reliant on China for EV imports. Germany's economy minister, Robert Habeck, has been vocal about conducting concrete negotiations with China. 'What I suggested to my Chinese partners today is that the doors are open for discussions &amp; I hope that this message was heard.' He said in Shanghai after meeting Chinese officials in Beijing.

The EU Commission is set to deliver its final verdict on July 4. China and EV producers have until July 18 to comment on the findings. The commission has reportedly visited more than 100 sites of EV automakers, both in China and Europe.

Definitive duties are expected to be lower than provisional rates. This is possible as some of the arguments are expected to hold ground. The commission must also consider Tesla's request for a separate duty rate.

EV prices are also expecting a jolt from this outcome. Due to China's competitive pricing, the discounted prices are expected to surge as exporters eye a minimum price to counter export curbs.

Who decides?

The European Commission has full powers to impose duties at the provisional stage, although it does consult EU members. This could potentially help China's cause since major EU members are against tariffs on China.

In case of definite duties, it can be blocked if a qualified EU majority, or 15 EU members, oppose the measures. This means the EU must address domestic industry concerns and keep them in sync with their plans. China is the world's largest car market, and many fear potential losses if tariffs are imposed. Many are concerned about China's retaliation. The pork industry is already reeling from the proposed tariffs on EU pork imports.

Concerned companies can challenge the decision at the European Court of Justice. China can also take the European Union to the World Trade Organisation. Either way, it will be a long process, and a compromised outcome is likely to happen.

'What I suggested to my Chinese partners today is that the doors are open for discussions & I hope that this message was heard.' He said in Shanghai after meeting Chinese officials in Beijing.

Explainer: What happens next in the EU-China EV standoff

The trade war between China and the European Union continues to build. In the latest update, China is looking&nbsp;to convince Germany's car manufacturers with potential&nbsp;benefits if they can persuade the EU to drop tariffs on Chinese EVs.

China currently imposes a 15 per cent fee on passenger vehicles from Germany. The tariff-hit country is considering floating the fees in exchange for scrapping planned EV levies on its imports.

China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao hinted at the possibilities during a meeting with Germany's Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck on Saturday. Germany has been vocal about the potential threat to business if the EU goes ahead with these tariffs. Germany also faces a threat from China's proposed tariffs on EU pork imports.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had earlier underscored the government's wish for a favourable solution. China and the EU are currently under discussion regarding tariffs. China must address these disputes, as Canada joins the league of countries moving against its countries trade tactics.

This also reflects China's tactics to persuade the EU against these tariffs. While proposed duties on EU pork imports are underway, China is also trying the backdoor to squash trade tensions with the EU. China is already facing growing scrutiny from the US regarding 'overcapacity' concerns.

Germany's Economy Minister, Robert Habeck, made an attempt to reassure Chinese officials in Beijing on Saturday that proposed EU tariffs on Chinese goods would not be punitive. The visit of Habeck to Beijing comes as the first by a top European official since Brussels slapped significant duties on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles, measures against what it argues are excessive subsidies provided by China for its local manufacturers.&nbsp;

Ahead of Habeck's visit, Beijing had cautioned that increasing tension over EV tariffs risked spiralling into an outright trade war. Ignoring these threats, he reaffirmed in the round of climate and transformation talks that tariffs should not be considered a penalty. He emphasized how the EU, unlike countries such as the U.S., Brazil, and even Turkiye, managed things that went beyond strict trade concerns.&nbsp;

Habeck explained that the Commission had spent nine months investigating whether Chinese companies were given unfair advantages through subsidies or otherwise, adding that any countervailing duties arising from this review were not punitive but compensatory in nature, trying to even out the playing fields between the European and Chinese Companies.&nbsp;

"Common, equal standards for market access should be achieved," said Habeck, referring to fair competition. During his meeting with Zheng Shanjie, chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission of China, Habeck restated that the EU's proposed tariffs aim to ensure genuinely open market conditions, not to punish Chinese enterprises.&nbsp;

In return, Zheng said, "We will do everything to protect Chinese companies," outlining China's determination to help its domestic industries. The provisional duties of the EU will come into effect by July 4 and the investigation will run until November 2. Should the review find grounds for tariffs, definitive duties, usually five years in duration, could stand.&nbsp;

For this reason, Habeck has called for discussion with Chinese officials based on the findings presented in the EU report, saying, "It's important now to take the opportunity that the report provides seriously and to talk or negotiate." The emphasis was, therefore, on dialogue and negotiation concerning the concerns raised by the investigation.&nbsp;

The visit of Habeck to China accentuates the balancing act the EU seeks in its trade relations with China. While, in part, the proposed tariffs do try to correct perceived subsidy imbalances, at the same time, they also open a channel for further dialogue and negotiation. Habeck sought to diffuse potential explosive trade tension on both sides by saying that the tariffs were not punitive but would give European and Chinese companies a fair and better competitive environment. The next few months are going to be critical as far as the future prospects of EU-China trade relations are concerned, as both look for a way out from these intricate issues.

Germany's intelligence agency has flagged the jihadist threat posed by the followers of Afghanistan-based Islamic State offshoot and related domestic extremism in Germany. The report by BfV comes amid growing anti-immigrant sentiment in Germany, reflected most recently in the surge of far-right parties during the European Union parliamentary elections.&nbsp;

It estimated the strength of global jihadist organisations at 27,200.&nbsp;

The group, designated ISPK by the German intelligence service, "has managed to bring followers to Western Europe, possibly with the wave of refugees from Ukraine, who are now staying here in various Western European countries," Director General Thomas Haldenwang told the media on Tuesday (June 18).&nbsp;

The senior official of German intelligence agency BfV and Interior Minister Nancy Faeser presented an annual report on the intelligence operations, including a July 2023 operation that involved a series of arrests in Germany and the Netherlands.

The German authorities had arrested a total of nine people hailing from Central Asia, seven amongst whom lived in Germany. They are accused of founding a "domestic terrorist group" and preparing major attacks on European soil.&nbsp;

Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan scored as hosts Germany became the first team to qualify for the last 16 of Euro 2024 on Wednesday after beating Hungary 2-0 in Stuttgart.

Musiala struck for the second game running midway through the first half, much to the anger of Hungary players who felt a foul should have been awarded in the build-up to the goal.

Gundogan grabbed his side's second on 67 minutes as Germany eased to a second successive win in Group A, making sure they will progress to the knockout phase at least as one of the best third-placed sides.

Julian Nagelsmann's men can wrap up top spot when they play Switzerland in Frankfurt in their final group fixture on Sunday.

Hungary are staring at elimination after back-to-back defeats and must beat Scotland if they are to stand any chance of reaching the last 16.

Germany unsurprisingly stuck with the same line-up that battered Scotland 5-1 in the first game of the tournament, ending a run of three major finals in which they had lost their opening match. &nbsp;

Hungary coach Marco Rossi made two changes following a disappointing 3-1 loss to Switzerland, bringing Marton Dardai into his three-man defence and starting Bendeguz Bolla at right wing-back.

A dismal first half left Hungary with too much to do against the Swiss and Rossi admitted beating Germany would require a "perfect match" from his team.&nbsp;

Hungary almost struck in the opening seconds as Manuel Neuer raced out to take the ball off the toe of Roland Sallai.&nbsp;

Kai Havertz outmuscled Willi Orban only to be superbly denied by Peter Gulacsi, who thrust out his right hand to deny the Arsenal attacker.

Robert Andrich's volley from the resulting corner was bravely headed behind by Bolla, but it wasn't long until Germany's persistence was rewarded.

Musiala cushioned the ball through for Gundogan and the Germany captain kept the attack alive after jostling with Orban, knocking it back for Musiala to slam in off the crossbar with a touch off Attila Fiola.

<h2>- Hungary protests dismissed -</h2>

Hungary were furious no foul was given for the contact between Gundogan and Orban that knocked the defender to the ground, the goal confirmed after a brief VAR check.

Dominik Szoboszlai's curling free-kick drew a terrific stop from Neuer soaring to his right, the goalkeeper kicking away the follow-up as Hungary tried to scramble in the rebound.

A key block from Jonathan Tah foiled a second opportunity in quick succession for Szoboszlai, with Musiala then drilling into the side-netting at the other end.

Hungary had the ball in Germany's net in first-half stoppage time, but Sallai's effort was ruled out for offside after Neuer palmed away an Orban header.

Gulacsi clawed away a deflected Toni Kroos drive early in the second half before Hungary forward Barnabas Varga, who scored in the loss to Switzerland, nodded narrowly over from an inviting cross.

Germany picked apart the Hungary defence with a patient attack to double their lead just past the hour.

Maximilian Mittelstaedt found space down the left and slid across a pass for Gundogan to sweep home from near the penalty spot.

Niclas Fuellkrug failed to get a finishing touch as Joshua Kimmich powered across the face of goal, with Gulacsi making smart saves to keep out Kimmich and Leroy Sane as Germany sought a third goal.

Julian Nagelsmann withdrew his front three with the game under control to keep them fresh for the Switzerland clash.

Neuer had a nervy moment late on when he spilled a cross, but Kimmich cleared Orban's shot off the line to preserve the clean sheet for Germany -- their first in eight games at the European Championship.

Amazon is set to invest $10.75 billion amid booming demand for its products in Europe's biggest economy. This brings Amazon's planned investments in Germany to over $19 billion.

Most of the investment will be spent by 2026 to expand its computing unit, Amazon Web Service (AWS). This aligns with a broader trend of companies focusing on expanding their AI-related services.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed the investment, which is said to create more than 4000 jobs this year. Germany is currently dealing with an economic downturn triggered by high energy costs and interest rates. The country is also facing significant economic threats owing to EU-China trade tensions. Major industries have voiced concerns over potential losses if tensions escalate. At this time, such an investment is a good breather for Germany.

Regarding Amazon's partnerships in Europe, Just Eat Takeaway, Europe's biggest food delivery firm, has struck a deal with Amazon over free delivery of food orders for Amazon Prime members in Germany, Austria and Spain. Amazon struck a similar agreement with Just Eat's US business - GrubHub.

Germany's domestic intelligence agency has categorised the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement as a "suspected extremist case."

BDS movement is a global campaign that "works to end international support for Israel's oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law," as per the information on its website.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The announcement was made by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) in a report that Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser released on Tuesday (June 18).&nbsp; &nbsp;

The report highlighted that the BDS movement was established in 2005 and supported by over 170 Palestinian organisations, including Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Authorities in Germany announced on Monday (June 17) that they had seized cocaine worth 2.6 billion euros ($2.78 billion) from several container ships and arrested seven people in what they called the biggest-ever cocaine find in the country. A report by the news agency Associated Press said that prosecutors in Düsseldorf confiscated 35.5 metric tonnes of cocaine last year following a tip from Colombian authorities. The prosecutors said that they found 25 tonnes of cocaine in the port of the northern city of Hamburg, another 8 tonnes in the Dutch port of Rotterdam and almost 3 tonnes in Colombia. The cocaine was hidden among vegetables and fruit, the Associated Press report said. The suspects- aged between 30 and 54 - were arrested in recent weeks and are believed to have been behind the smuggling. The prosecutors said that the arrested included German, Azerbaijani, Bulgarian, Moroccan, Turkish and Ukrainian nationals. Their identities were not given in line with German privacy rules. 'Blow to international organised criminality' Prosecutors also said that a businessman from the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia set up 100 letterbox companies to make the transports (of cocaine) appear legal. “Specifically, the suspects are accused of organizing the transport of 10 sea containers with large quantities of cocaine from Latin America to Europe in the period from April to September 2023 with other as yet unknown accomplices allegedly residing in Turkey via front companies set up for this purpose,” they added. North Rhine-Westphalia's Justice Minister Benjamin Limbach praised the cocaine seizure. European Union's tariffs on Chinese EVs have&nbsp;sparked a debate among EU nations regarding potential harm to the EU's automotive industry. The most vocal among them is Germany, a country heavily dependent on China for trade.

Major German players, including BMW &amp; Volkswagen, have voiced concerns over EV tariffs on China. A recent report by a business body reveals scepticism regarding tariffs, terming it as 'counterproductive.' The survey revealed that falling prices and weak demand continue to plague German companies invested in China.

Maximilian Butek, chief representative at Delegation of German industry &amp; commerce in Shanghai, said in a statement to AFP, 'The industry also made quite clear statements that tariffs as suggested now by the EU will not increase competitiveness of the automotive industry and therefore we rather advocate for investing into the competitiveness of the European Union rather than trying to protect the auto industry. And I&nbsp;mean you cannot protect the automotive industry only in the European Union if they are all over the world, in all global markets.'

China represents the world's largest car market and the most advanced in EV production owing to its raw material supremacy. China is also one of Germany's top trading partners. But the recent domestic slowdown and subsequent price wars have dented profits for all major manufacturers. EU's EV tariffs have added to China's troubles. EU has accused China of unfair trade practices &amp; undercutting Europe's manufacturers.

Germany in the EU-China trade crossfire

China, a crucial market for German companies, is presenting mounting challenges. A recent survey revealed that over 60% of German firms in China are grappling with intense price pressure. This coincides with a slowdown in the Chinese economy, weakening consumer demand across all sectors.

Pigeons, one of the earliest domesticated animals or birds, have a complex relationship with humans. While some people find them irritating and nothing but a menace, others share their food with the birds. This dichotomy has reached a critical point in Limburg an der Lahn, a town in the Western German state of Hesse.

In a referendum held on 9 June, coinciding with the country's EU elections, Limburg residents have voted to exterminate the town's pigeon population of around 700 birds — by very violent, and some may say cruel methods.

<h2>Sky rats</h2>

This decision sparked controversy after the city council's initial plan in November 2023 to reduce the 'sky rats' aka pigeon numbers.&nbsp;

On June 9, however,&nbsp;53 per cent of residents — 7,350 — voted in favour, and the plan to cull the pigeons was approved.

The method chosen for the cull involves using a falconer to lure the birds into traps, stun them with a wooden stick, and then break their necks.&nbsp;

This approach has drawn significant criticism from animal rights activists.

"We live in 2023, it can't be that we kill animals just because they annoy us, or they’re a nuisance. That’s not acceptable," Tanya Muller, the city pigeon project manager, had previously said about the plan.

<h2>Is culling an effective population control method?</h2>

The cull will be carried out over the next two years.

However, despite the town's decision, critics argue that culling pigeons is cruel and ineffective.

Historical evidence suggests pigeon populations can remain stable or even increase after such efforts.

For instance, Basel, Switzerland, saw its pigeon numbers remain steady despite killing approximately 100,000 birds annually between 1961 and 1985.

Alternative methods have proven more successful in controlling pigeon populations.

This includes Basel's approach, which involved discouraging feeding and managing pigeon lofts to remove eggs.

This method found by a group called Pigeon Action, as per Euro News, was found to bring a 50 per cent reduction in pigeon numbers within four years.&nbsp;
