The German ambassador to India, Dr Philipp Ackermann, has expressed hope for the swift release of Indian nationals who were onboard the Israel-linked Portuguese-flagged commercial vessel MSC Aries, seized by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend.

Speaking to our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, he said, "We support the Indian call; we feel that India has every right to look after its citizens." Full interview transcript:

WION: How do you see the current situation in West Asia?

Dr Philipp Ackermann: You might have seen my government's reaction; they have condemned the attack by Iran on Israeli soil in the strongest terms. Germany is very worried; I think we are facing a very dangerous situation. And my government has been very active to try to de-escalate the situation. So I think the need of the hour is to reduce the tension so that the spiral of violence is not escalated.

WION: Over the weekend, we also saw the Iranians seizing commercial vessels where there are 17 Indians on board as well and India has been calling for early release, what is Germany's stance?

Dr Philipp Ackermann: We support the Indian call; we feel that India has every right to look after its citizens. And I know that my minister, my foreign minister raised the issue when she talked to the Iranian foreign minister during the weekend because she did the same as for EAM Dr S Jaishankar. She called both the Israeli and Iranian Foreign Ministers in order to de-escalate but I know that embassy advice was also an item and she mentioned it in order to release these hostages.

WION: How do you see India Europe, India Germany relationship. Also India goes to election later this week, your assessment as the largest democracy goes to elections

Dr Philipp Ackermann: So elections are a unique opportunity and every diplomat in Delhi is privileged to witness the biggest election exercise in the world. Very excited to see what is happening in the next several weeks, and very excited to see results at the beginning of June. It is a fantastic festival of democracy and I am very happy that it takes place in my tenure. So, India Europe, the sky's the limit and very excited with the new attention Europe gets from the Indian govt. Maybe the culminating point is our negotiation of a free trade agreement between Europe and India and we are pushing for it and we hope in the future we get a favourable result on it.

"Sexual harassment leaves a mark," on statues and on humans. Throughout Germany, large white placards have been strategically placed to expose the trauma that comes with sexual abuse. How? Through what is in front of the placards: Bronze statues of women with their breasts visibly many shades lighter because of all the groping and touching at the hands of tourists and locals.

Unsilence the violence

German women's rights organisation Terre des Femmes has launched a campaign titled "Unisilence the violence," to bring attention to the sexual harassment women face throughout their lives.

According to the group, two out of three women experience sexual harassment at some point in their lives.

In a press release, Sina Ton of Terre des Femmes pointed out that "Sexual harassment is a problem that is far too often trivialized or ignored."

"We must work together to ensure that the voices of victims are heard and that perpetrators are held accountable," it added.

Not even statues are spared

The group, Terre des Femmes, has installed their placards behind iconic statues of women, which are an important part of humanity's cultural history: the Juliet Capulet statue in Munich's Marienplatz; the "Youth" statue in Bremen's Hoetgerhof; and in front of the "Frau Rhein" statue that is part of the Neptune fountain in central Berlin.

The group has also posted QR codes through which the statues themselves can tell their stories in audio form.

Photos of the installation clearly show the stark difference between the naked women's breasts — "where they are most often touched" — and the rest of the statue, said the organisation.

Germany denied accusations on Tuesday that it was aiding genocide in Gaza by selling Israel arms in a suit to the top U.N. court by Nicaragua reflecting mounting legal action in support of Palestinians.

Germany has been one of Israel's staunchest allies since the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas militants and retaliatory offensive. It is one of its biggest military suppliers, sending 326.5 million euros ($353.70 million) in equipment and weapons in 2023, according to Economy Ministry data.

Germany and other Western nations have faced street protests, various legal cases, and accusations of hypocrisy from campaign groups who say Israel has killed too many Palestinian civilians in its six-month assault.

But Tania von Uslar-Gleichen, legal adviser for the German Foreign Ministry, told the International Court of Justice, or World Court, that Nicaragua's case was rushed, based on flimsy evidence and should be thrown out for lack of jurisdiction.

Arms exports were scrutinised for adherence to international law, she said.

"Germany is doing its utmost to live up to its responsibility vis-a-vis both the Israeli and the Palestinian people," she added, with Germany the largest individual donor of humanitarian aid to Palestinians.

Von Uslar-Gleichen said Israel's security was a priority for Germany given the history of the Nazi decimation of Jews. "Germany has learned from its past, a past that includes the responsibility for one of the most horrific crimes in human history, the Shoah," she said, using the Hebrew word.

A lawyer for Germany, Christian Tams, told the court that since Oct. 7, 98% of arms exports to Israel were general equipment like vests, helmets and binoculars. And of four cases where war weapons exports were approved, he said, three concerned arms unsuitable for use in combat and meant for training.

NICARAGUA AND SOUTH AFRICA PRESSURE ISRAEL

Lawyers for Nicaragua have asked the ICJ to order Germany to halt arms sales to Israel and resume funding of U.N. Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA.

They argued Berlin has violated the 1948 Genocide Convention and international law by supplying Israel while aware there was a risk of genocide.

After Tuesday's hearing, Nicaraguan ambassador Carlos Arguello told journalists that the case at this preliminary stage did not hinge on the amount of Germany's military aid but simply its existence.

The Islamist group's Oct. 7 attacks killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli tallies. More than 33,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's Gaza offensive since then, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run enclave.

An ICJ ruling on Nicaragua's requested emergency measures is expected in weeks. A final judgement on the merits of the case usually takes years and the court has no power to enforce it.

“I am the Egyptian visual artist Mohamed Abla, founder of the Fayoum center for arts, and recipient of the Goethe prize, Germany’s highest honor. I decided today, officially and directly, to give up this medal and return it back to the German government,” Mohamed Abla said. “I cannot be proud that I received this medal. It no longer represents any importance to me, and for this reason I decided to return this medal back again,” he added.

As one of the first Arabs to receive this medal, Abla said it was a significant and honourable moment. However, he said, he felt there was a contradiction between the award and Germany's actions related to the war in Gaza.

“I was very happy with this medal, because I was the first Arab artist to receive it, and this was something that felt good. Also because I get to join a large list of artists around the world, over the course of 70 years, who have received this medal, it was an honorable thing and a plus (to my career),” Abla said

“However, after the recent events taking place in Gaza, and the very strong support from Germany for Israel since day one, to the point that Germany is the second supporter of Israel after America for providing weapons, and are the largest amount of arms sales provided to Israel. I felt a strong contradiction, between what Germany says and what it does, there is a very strong contradiction," he added.

Since Hamas' October assault on Israel that killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli tallies, Germany has been one of Israel's staunchest allies alongside the United States, underlining its commitment to atonement for its perpetration of the World War Two Nazi Holocaust in which 6 million Jews died.

Abla founded the Fayoum Art Center in 2006 in the artisan Tunis village in Egypt's Fayoum, which houses the first caricature museum in the Middle East. According to the Goethe Institute, the medal "is the most important award of the Federal Republic of Germany’s foreign cultural policy."

Trophy Hunting: Botswana to send 20,000 elephants to Germany

Botswana president Mokgweetsi Masisi has threatened to send around 20,000 elephants to Germany saying that its conservation efforts and suggestion to limit importing trophies from hunting animals could have an impact on Botswanans.

Botswana to send elephants?

The threat comes after Germany’s environment ministry, earlier this year, raised the possibility of having stringent limits on the import of hunting trophies over poaching concerns.

However, the President of Botswana Mokgweetsi Masisi told German daily Bild that it would only impoverish Botswanans.

According to Masisi, the population of elephants has exploded due to conservation efforts and hunting is an important way to keep them in check.

The Botswanan president also spoke about how these elephants have wreaked havoc in his country by damaging property, eating crops, and trampling residents.

“It is very easy to sit in Berlin and have an opinion about our affairs in Botswana. We are paying the price for preserving these animals for the world,” Masisi said.

Germans should “live together with the animals, in the way you are trying to tell us to,” he told the Bild, adding that, “This is no joke.”

Notably, the Southern African country banned trophy hunting in 2014 but lifted the restrictions in 2019 under pressure from local communities.

Botswana is home to over 130,000 elephants, one of the world’s largest populations and more than it has space for.

The country has previously sent 8,000 elephants to Angola and another 500 to Mozambique. Last month, Botswana had also threatened to send 10,000 elephants to London.

“We would like to offer such a gift to Germany,” Masisi said, adding that he would “not take no for an answer”.

Germany and trophy hunting

The German environment ministry led by Green minister Steffi Lemke has sought to ban the import of trophies.

Meanwhile, animal rights groups have backed Lemke’s proposal and sought the measure calling the practice of shooting an animal and then taking a part of it back home as a trophy, cruel.

It is “a hobby of rich, jaded people who have more money than morals,” a PETA spokesperson told Politico.

A spokesperson for the environment ministry in Germany told news agency AFP, that Gaborone had not raised any concerns with Berlin on the matter and would remain in talks with African countries affected by import rules, including Botswana.

Berlin is the European Union’s largest importer of African elephant trophies, and hunting trophies overall, said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson also told AFP that as per the current rules African elephant hunting trophies require import authorisation, but that the EU is planning harsher restrictions.

‘No joke’: Botswana threatens to send thousands of elephants to Germany over hunting row

Germany has taken a Monumental decision towards legalization of cannabis. Watch in for more details!

Germany: Cannabis users celebrate relaxation of laws

Germany has become the largest European Union nation to legalise recreational cannabis, a decision met with both celebration and criticism. The new law, despite facing strong opposition from certain quarters, signals a drastic shift in drug policy in the country.

Under the new legislation, adults over the age of 18 are permitted to have up to 25 grammes of dried cannabis and cultivate a maximum of three marijuana plants at home.

This places Germany among the most progressive countries in Europe regarding cannabis legislation, alongside Malta and Luxembourg, which legalised recreational use in 2021 and 2023, respectively.

The Netherlands, previously known for its lenient stand on cannabis, has adopted a stricter approach in recent years to control cannabis tourism.

Midnight celebrations in the country

As the law came into effect at midnight, approximately 1,500 people gathered in central Berlin near the Brandenburg Gate to express their support.

Amid cheers, some attendees even lit joints in celebration. For many, the legalisation represents a departure from the stigma surrounding cannabis consumption and a step towards normalisation.

While supporters of the law view it as a step forward, concerns have been raised by medical associations and conservative politicians regarding potential health risks and law enforcement challenges. Medical groups have cautioned against increased cannabis use among the youth.

One key aspect of the law's implementation is the establishment of "cannabis clubs" from July 1, which will provide regulated access to cannabis for members. However, the process faces hurdles, including EU opposition to licensed cannabis shops and concerns about retroactive amnesty for cannabis-related offenses.

Florian Wirtz scored Germany's fastest international goal after seven seconds as the Euro 2024 hosts earned a confidence-boosting 2-0 friendly victory over France on Saturday (Mar 23) to bag their first win in their last four games.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann was desperate for a good start to the year ahead of the tournament on home soil in June and that is exactly what he got.

Wirtz surprised the French with his long-range effort for his first international goal after a well-practised move and pass from Toni Kroos, back from a three-year international retirement.

The goal was a few hundredths of a second faster than the previous German best, Lukas Podolski's seventh-second goal against Ecuador in 2013.

The hosts gradually took control and Kylian Mbappe forced a fine save from Germany's Marc Andre ter Stegen to protect their lead in the 26th minute.

"We had a very good start and the kickoff was planned exactly that way," Germany's Nagelsmann said.

"It was important to protect the lead and after the break, we improved further and carved out more chances. I am very satisfied with the way we fought. It is what we wish, to give it all every time.

"We got a confidence boost from this game. We are on a good path and played a very good game today."

France pushed for an equaliser with Ousmane Dembele and Adrien Rabiot but it was the Germans, under pressure to improve after only two wins in their last 10 matches before Saturday, who scored again.

They doubled their lead early in the second half with Wirtz picking out Jamal Musiala with a cross and he cut back for Kai Havertz to finish the move.

France ran out of ideas in the second half and had to wait until late in the game for substitute Olivier Giroud to miss two chances before Germany defender Antonio Ruediger hit his own post as he tried to clear a ball.

"We weren't there, that's obvious," said France coach Didier Deschamps after his 150th game in charge.

"The Germans played a high-level match today. When we see our start to the match, with this goal, we are standing still.

"The Germans did things better than us. In terms of commitment and aggression, we were below. The first person to blame is me," he added.

India and Germany are collaborating on triangular cooperation projects aimed at promoting sustainable development in countries across Asia, Africa, and the Indo-Pacific region, according to German Ambassador Dr. Philipp Ackermann. In an interview with WION, Ambassador Ackermann highlighted the significance of this partnership and emphasised upon the combined expertise of both nations.

"That's a new project we have developed together where we cooperate and I think it's very interesting because both the Indian know-how and the German know-how come together. We have started doing projects in Ghana, in Benin, in Malawi, in Africa, but also in Peru, in Latin America. The list is growing," he remarked, indicating the expanding scope of their joint initiatives.

These projects primarily focus on sustainable farming and agriculture, leveraging Indo-German expertise in this field.

One notable initiative mentioned by Ambassador Ackermann is the 'Indo-German Partnership for Green and Sustainable Development' (GSDP), established following talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in May 2022. The GSDP aims to address climate change challenges, preserve natural habitats, and develop emission-free urban centres.

"GSDP aims to adapt to climate change, mitigate climate change, preserve nature, preserve the natural habitat and make cities smarter and more emission-free. So it's a whole package of things we are collecting under this umbrella of this greener Sustainable Development Partnership, that means we will try to very concretely, very operationally improve the situation on the ground and that's beneficial to everyone," Ambassador Ackermann elaborated.

He underscored the concrete outcomes of the GSDP, highlighting the allocation of 10 billion euros over the next several years. "Under this, 10 billion euros over the next couple of years and you have in the last two years spent about 1.3 billion euros on this partnership, and the nice thing about this partnership is, it helps and develops projects across the country," he noted. Under GSDP, projects have been undertaken in Cochin, Andhra, Manipur and Ganga valley.
