Macron and Scholz underlined the role of their countries' close cooperation for European unity.
"Europe must be strong and resilient in a world that is, to put it mildly, in motion," said Scholz, who next month faces a general election at home.
"The only possible response for Europeans to the period that we are entering is more unity, more ambition, more audacity, and more independence," Macron said. "This is our momentum, and this is the direction in which we are going."

"I have already spoken extensively on the phone with the future US president, and we are also in direct contact with those responsible for security policy," Scholz told the Funke media group in an interview published on Saturday (Dec 7).

The Ukraine war was an issue in Trump's election campaign as the Republican repeatedly said he would end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine "within 24 hours".

Trump could speak to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky over the weekend in Paris, where the pair will both attend the re-opening of Notre Dame cathedral, as per reports.

Germany has been one of the biggest supporters of Ukraine and a military backer in its resistance to the Russian invasion that crossed 1,000 days.

Germany is second number after the US in providing military aid to Ukraine.

Scholz has drawn immense criticism in recent weeks for directly talking to Russian President Vladimir Putin, but still vowed that his country will continue supporting Ukraine to "the best of its ability".&nbsp;

"My main principle remains the same: nothing must be decided behind the backs of the Ukrainian people," he said in the Saturday interview. "What is important is that the killing ends soon and that Ukraine's independence and sovereignty are guaranteed."&nbsp;

Scholz also stressed "Germany's unwavering determination to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression for as long as necessary".

The call comes at a crucial juncture in the war. Ukrainian troops are coming under pressure and the election of Donald Trump in the United States has cast doubt over Washington's continued support for Kyiv.

The call between the two leaders was the first time they have been in contact since December 2022. The conversation lasted "for an hour", a German government source told AFP.

Scholz "particularly condemned the Russian air strikes against civilian infrastructure in Ukraine", said a government source.

"He made it clear that sending North Korean soldiers to Russia for combat missions against Ukraine would lead to a serious escalation and expansion of the conflict," the source added.

The Kremlin, in its readout of the conversation, said the two leaders had had a "frank exchange of views", adding that the call had been initiated by Germany.

"Possible agreements should take into account the security interests of the Russian Federation, proceed from the new territorial realities and, most importantly, address the root causes of the conflict," the Kremlin added.

Germany's embattled Olaf Scholz faced heavy pressure Thursday to quickly call elections after his unruly coalition collapsed just as Donald Trump celebrated his return to the White House.

Christian Democrats (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz –&nbsp;whose alliance with Bavaria's CSU is leading in opinion polls -- said Scholz's alliance with the Greens and the liberal Free Democrats had "failed".

"The decision taken last night... is the end of the coalition government and thus the end of this legislative period," Merz said, adding that there was "absolutely no reason" to delay the confidence vote until January.&nbsp;

The call was echoed by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the hard-left BSW, whose rise has rattled Germany's traditionally staid party politics, as well as by the ousted Free Democrats (FDP).

NATO chief Mark Rutte meanwhile expressed confidence that Germany would remain a key player on the world stage.

"I'm sure that when it comes to defence, when it comes to foreign policy, that Germany will be able to fulfil its obligations," Rutte said. "I'm not worried about that."

Scholz's motley three-way crew of ideologically disparate parties took over with fanfare from Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2021.

But the early spirit of unity quickly frayed as Germany was hammered by crises including the Ukraine war and soaring inflation.

After months of bitter infighting, mostly on economic and fiscal policy, the coalition finally broke apart Wednesday after Scholz sacked his rebellious finance minister Christian Lindner of the FDP.

The surprise move, which saw two other FDP ministers quit, leaves Scholz's Social Democrats and the Greens heading a precarious minority government, where it will have to ask Merz's party to back laws on a case-by-case basis.

Scholz said he would seek a confidence vote by January 15 so lawmakers could decide whether to call early elections by March -- more than half a year ahead of a previously scheduled September vote.

To shore up his depleted cabinet, Scholz appointed his party ally Joerg Kukies as his new finance minister.

The chancellor also delayed a visit to a European summit in Hungary by several hours and cancelled his planned trip to next week's COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan.

Germany's political turmoil could not have come at a worse time as the economy is set to shrink for a second year in a row amid dire geopolitical challenges.

"The early end of the coalition leaves Germany somewhat rudderless in what could be an exceptionally turbulent time right after Donald Trump won the US election," Berenberg bank analyst Holger Schmieding said in a research note.

The AfD scored 18 per cent in the Ipsos poll, making it the second-strongest party, but it is unlikely to enter any government as all other parties have vowed not to cooperate with it.

The elections came after a torrid two years for Scholz's government, which has had to contend with Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing energy crisis, which plunged Germany into recession.

Adding to the problems, the chancellor's coalition has been consumed by bitter infighting on issues ranging from climate laws to spending cuts.

Not helping the cause of the SPD and its coalition partners, both states are conservative strongholds. Hesse had been ruled for 24 years by the main opposition CDU and Bavaria since 1957 by the CSU, headed by Markus Soeder.

<h2>- Latest far-right win -</h2>

The SPD had sought to gain ground in Hesse by fielding a heavyweight to run for state premier, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.

But the party won just 15 per cent of the vote, almost five percentage points below its last result in 2018, according to the latest projections late Sunday from ARD.

The CDU maintained its first place in Hesse and extended its lead by over seven points to 34.5 per cent, the projection showed.&nbsp;

State premier Boris Rhein is thus set to retain his job, while Faeser is left facing questions about her political future.

The AfD looked to have gained about five percentage points in both Bavaria and Hesse, building on recent local poll wins.

While it does not look likely to enter government in either state -- its strongholds are in eastern Germany -- analysts said it showed the party had broad appeal.

"There can no longer be any talk of (the AfD) being merely an east German regional party," said the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

The AfD is traditionally an anti-immigration party but has also focused on attacking the coalition's unpopular climate policies, driven by the Greens. Critics argue they could unduly burden households.

Immigration was also a central theme at the polls as Germany -- like elsewhere in Europe -- faces a surge of new arrivals, reviving memories of a major influx in 2015.

The victory of the CSU -- the sister party of the CDU -- in Bavaria was widely expected and state premier Soeder will retain his post.

But with vote projections showing the party's worst result for decades, it could deal a blow to his ambitions to one day stand as a chancellor candidate.

Ahead of the vote, the state's governing coalition was rocked by a scandal when Soeder's deputy, Hubert Aiwanger, admitted to possessing Nazi pamphlets that were found in the schoolbag he used as a teenager in the late 1980s.

But Aiwanger, leader of junior coalition partner the Free Voters, managed to hang on to his job and his party increased its share of the vote after he claimed he was the victim of a "witch hunt".

In contrast, the parties from Scholz's coalition lost support in Bavaria and the FDP fell below the threshold to get into the state parliament.

Poland's government has written to the European Union's security commissioner to say that the scandal was an exaggerated "media fact" timed to discredit the ruling nationalists in a tough battle for re-election next month.

"The visa scandal that is taking place in Poland needs to be clarified," Scholz said on Saturday at an event. "I don't want people from Poland to simply be waved through," he added.

Scholz hinted that Germany could take steps to control the border with Poland.

In the letter made available to BILD, the commissioner points out that the behaviour of the Polish authorities could mean "a violation of EU law and in particular of the EU Visa Code."

Chancellor’s spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/germanys-olaf-scholz-sports-eyepatch-post-injury-says-excited-to-see-the-memes-632404">said</a> that Scholz, who has been running regularly for many years, was in good shape despite the injury.&nbsp;

According to his spokesperson, the German chancellor has suffered minor injuries and will have to wear the eye patch for the next few days.&nbsp;

“He’s doing well under the circumstances,” Hebestreit said in a regular press briefing. “He was in a good mood this morning, although he still looks a little battered,” he added.

The accident which led to injuries happened sometime over the weekend, which also reportedly led to the cancellation of some of his appointments.

As per local media, Scholz fell while he was running in his hometown of Potsdam, which is 28 kilometres (17 miles) southwest of Berlin.&nbsp;

Scholz has been leading Germany since December 2021, prior to which he served as the finance and labour minister of the country and was also the mayor of Hamburg.&nbsp;

The fervent appeal by Scholz, who wrapped up his two-day visit to India in southern Bengaluru city on Sunday, comes as the country faces a severe shortage of workers, especially in the field of pharmacy and Information Technology (IT).

The chancellor said that Germany needs skilled workers to meet the demand for software development in the country, and assured to modernise the bureaucratic process and legal requirements to make it easier for workers and their families to come to Germany.

He, however, provided no further information as to how many workers Germany hopes to attract from India.

"I am quite sure that many will want to take advantage of the opportunities to work as skilled workers in Germany," Scholz told reporters after holding roundtable discussions with workers of software company SAP Labs India in Bengaluru.

"We need this in all areas of employment, but of course especially when it comes to skills such as those we have seen today in the area of software and IT development," Scholz was quoted as saying by Bloomberg.

India has been insisting&nbsp;for resolving the Ukraine crisis through dialogue and diplomacy from the start&nbsp;and is ready to contribute to any peace process, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday (February 25) at a joint press briefing in New Delhi with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who began his two-day visit to the country earlier in the day.

"Since the beginning of the developments in Ukraine, India has laid emphasis on resolving this dispute through dialogue and diplomacy. India is ready to contribute to any peace process,"&nbsp; Modi said while addressing the briefing.

He said, "we have seen President Biden in Ukraine, and we have seen Putin's speech, so this will be a very important item on the agenda."

The ambassador also added that while this is an important issue, the talks will not be restricted to it alone and that other topics such as China and the Indo-Pacific region will also be discussed.

However, he also noted that it is important to find the right moment to step up, saying that "this moment is not right now".&nbsp;

Trade and business will also be a major focus during the visit, with the Chancellor being accompanied by a delegation of CEOs from 12 German companies. The German ambassador stressed the need for an early conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, stating that "German business is very interested in getting this FTA done." The leaders will also interact with CEOs and business leaders from both sides.

Ackermann noted that there are currently around 35,000 Indian students in Germany, with a further 18,000 in the pipeline to travel to the country.

This will be Chancellor Scholz's first visit to India in his current role and the first standalone visit of a German Chancellor to India since the Inter-Governmental Consultation mechanism began in 2011.

Minister of State at Germany's Federal Foreign Office Dr Tobias Lindner has said that "it is in India's&nbsp;interest" to stop the war in Ukraine.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Berlin on May 2 for talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, with the two sides co-chairing the sixth edition of the India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC).

This will be the first such government-to-government consultations of the new German government, which assumed office in December 2021.

Speaking to WION’s Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal in Delhi, Lindner said, "I have come to Delhi to understand the reasons and motivations and the Indian position in that conflict. I believe that it is also in Indian interest that this war stops."

Asked about India's participation in the G7 as the guest, he said there could be an announcement in Berlin.

The summit is due to take place from June 26 to June 28 June at Schloss Elmau in the Bavarian Alps. Germany is the chair of the grouping for this year and holds the meeting amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

India has been consecutively invited to the G7 summit since 2019. PM Modi first participated at the G7 summit in France's Biarritz Summit in 2019.

Tobias Lindner: The strategic partnership with Germany is key for India, especially in the region, and we will have various issues in the governmental consultations like the economy, technology, education, and security situation in the region. We believe the strategic partnership means a holistic approach in all fields of policy.

WION: Will Ukraine be discussed and how do you see India's position on Ukraine?

Tobias Lindner: For sure you cannot meet these days without talking about Ukraine because it has an impact on international rules-based order, and we believe it is in the interest of all countries on the planet to uphold territorial integrity and sovereignty. For sure will have exchanges with Indian colleagues on that and we more pull than push India on that term. Also trying to talk about possible implications of that war in other regions of the world.

WION: How do you see India's position on the Ukraine war?

Tobias Lindner: It is no secret that the German government welcomes every support for the resolutions in the United Nations. But I have come to Delhi to understand the reasons and motivations and the Indian position in that conflict. I believe that it is also in India's&nbsp;interest that this war stops, that we have the same goals, protecting the rules-based international order. Having an immediate stop to the war in Ukraine and in that field, we are searching for cooperation with India.

WION: And will India be invited to the G7 summit?

Tobias Lindner: I cannot make any comments on that. It is the issue of the German chancellery, but I believe during the consultations in Berlin there will be an announcement.

WION: What has been your govt's stance on Ukraine, which is at the heart of the crisis, but has also been criticized.

Tobias Lindner: This war on Ukraine is a blatant breach of international rules-based order. Russia is responsible for that. So, it is Russia's responsibility to immediately stop this war and violence in Ukraine. We are doing a lot starting from humanitarian aid, from helping the people in Ukraine, to helping refugees outside the country and also giving military assistance in terms of heavy weapons to Ukraine.

Foreign embassies continued to withdraw nonessential staff, nations urged their citizens to leave the country, and the Russian military buildup in the region showed no signs of slowing.

While President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine urged calm, and Russia continued to deny that it is planning to invade its neighbor, weeks of frenzied diplomacy showed little sign of progress.

Still, efforts to defuse the crisis are continuing, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany planning to travel to Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, on Monday and Moscow on Tuesday.

“It is our job to ensure that we prevent a war in Europe, in that we send a clear message to Russia that any military aggression would have consequences that would be very high for Russia and its prospects, and that we are united with our allies,” Scholz told the upper house of the Bundestag, Germany’s Parliament, on Friday.

Ahead of the visit, a German official said Scholz would be “actively urging for dialogue,” in which concrete steps toward de-escalation would be discussed. While the German delegation would put its threat perception on the table, the official said the visit was aimed at gaining “a better understanding of Russia’s goals” and Scholz would be open to initiating a broader discussion about “Russian grievances.”

Berlin is viewed with skepticism by many in Ukraine for not providing military weapons to aid in its defense as other NATO allies have. Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany complained Sunday about “German hypocrisy” on Twitter, noting that Berlin sells materials to Russia that can increase weapons production.

Last week, Scholz traveled to Washington, where he met Biden in a key attempt to shore up the alliance between the United States and Europe’s most powerful economy. Biden vowed that a lucrative gas pipeline project connecting Russia and Germany, Nord Stream 2, would be halted if Moscow invades Ukraine.

Scholz has not explicitly said the pipeline will be canceled in the event of an invasion, but Biden said the two countries were crafting their policies “in lockstep.”

Scholz’s Social Democratic Party has historically favored strong ties between Germany and Russia and has struggled to develop a coherent stance in dealing with Putin. But German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who rose to political prominence as a member of the party, was unequivocal in his criticism of the Russian troop buildup. Ben Wallace, the United Kingdom’s defense secretary, criticized Western efforts at reaching a diplomatic solution with Russia as “appeasement” in an interview with the Sunday Times.

Western officials estimate that Russia has massed more than 130,000 troops on Ukraine’s northern, southern and eastern borders, which Wallace said was enough to “launch an offensive at any time,” something he said was “highly likely.”

While the menacing military buildup around Ukraine has been roundly criticized by most Western governments, Putin has found support in some other autocratic leaders.

Brazil’s populist president, Jair Bolsonaro, is expected to arrive in Moscow on Tuesday, the same day as Scholz, for a meeting with Putin. The visit is seen as part of Putin’s attempt to shore up his alliances with Latin American countries that have traditionally been close to the United States.

Bolsonaro, whose approval rating is at a low ahead of elections this year, said Saturday that he did not intend to raise the issue of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.
