Palestinian militant group Hamas said on Sunday (Sept 1) that some of the six Israeli hostages found dead in a Gaza tunnel had been "approved" for release in the event of a truce deal.

Palestinian militant group Hamas said on Sunday (Sept 1) that some of the six Israeli hostages found dead in a Gaza tunnel had been "approved" for release in the event of a truce deal. Speaking to the news agency AFP, a senior Hamas official said that these captives would have been exchanged for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. "Some of the names of the captives announced as found by the (Israeli) occupier... were part of the list of hostages to be released that Hamas had approved in a proposed exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel," the official said on the condition of anonymity. Who were the six hostages? Earlier on Sunday, the Israeli military announced that it recovered the bodies of the six hostages from a tunnel in southern Gaza, where they were apparently killed not long before Israeli troops reached them. Also read | Netanyahu pledges to 'settle the score' with Hamas after six hostages' bodies found in Gaza According to the military, the deceased hostages were identified as Carmel Gat, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi and Ori Danino. Their bodies were found underground in the city of Rafah and have been taken to Israel, he said. "According to our initial estimation, they were brutally murdered by Hamas terrorists a short time before we reached them," military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said during a press conference. The recovered bodies were of the six hostages from among the 250 hostages captured during the Hamas-led shock incursion into southern Israel on October 7 last year that sparked the war in Gaza. 'Israel will not rest until...' Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been facing pressure to reach a deal that includes a ceasefire and the release of the remaining hostages, said on Sunday that his country would not rest until it caught those responsible for the killing of the six hostages. Gaza war: Some of the six Israeli hostages found dead were approved for potential swap, says Hamas

The Israeli military launched a missile, targeting the lead vehicle of a Gaza aid convoy, resulting in the deaths of five people. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that militants had hijacked the vehicle.

American Near East Refugee Aid (Anera), a nonprofit based in Washington DC, which had organised the convoy, described the incident as "shocking" in a statement released on Friday (Aug 30). The organisation stated that those who lost their lives worked for a local transportation company.

The convoy was transporting medical supplies and fuel to a hospital in Gaza's Rafah run by the Emiratis, with its route coordinated with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), said a report by The Washington Post, citing Anera's Palestine Country Director, Sandra Rasheed.

A Times of Israel report said that the aid organisation from the United States has acknowledged that a group of people, who the Israeli military alleges were armed, seized control of an aid convoy in the southern Gaza Strip yesterday.

As per the report, the organisation admitted that they did not vet these individuals or coordinate with the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF).

The IDF, in its explanation of the incident, said that the attack was carried out when gunmen took control of the lead vehicle in the convoy. "During the convoy’s journey, armed militants took control of a vehicle at the front of the convoy," the Israeli military said.

"An attack was carried out against them. No other vehicles in the convoy were harmed, and it reached its destination as planned," it added. The IDF also said that the "attack on the militants removed the threat to the humanitarian convoy."

Humanitarian organisations delivering aid to Gaza have faced frequent attacks during the ongoing conflict, raising serious concerns about the system for coordinating routes and the IDF’s conduct in the war.

The United Nations has reported that over 280 humanitarian workers have lost their lives since the conflict in Gaza started on October 7 after Hamas attacked Israel.

Gaza hostage-truce deal might be on edge of collapse: Report

Making a renewed push to seal a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is meeting top Israeli leaders in Tel Aviv. Watch in for more details!

West Asia Peace Talks: US State Secy Blinken to meet Netanyahu and top Israeli leaders

The United States (US) Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday (Aug 19) that the ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire deal in the Israel-Hamas war were maybe the "last chance" to reach an agreement to end the war.

The United States (US) Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday (Aug 19) that the ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire deal in the Israel-Hamas war were maybe the "last chance" to reach an agreement to end the war. Blinken arrived in Israel's Tel Aviv on Sunday on another West Asia tour to push for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. This was Blinken's ninth trip to the region since the Israel-Hamas war began on October 7, 2023. "This is a decisive moment -- probably the best, maybe the last, opportunity to get the hostages home, to get a ceasefire and to put everyone on a better path to enduring peace and security," Blinken said as he met Israeli President Isaac Herzog. The US secretary of state also met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. 'Israel thwarting mediators' efforts' Hamas raised doubts about Blinken's latest Middle East visit as it accused Israel of undermining his efforts. Hamas said that it held Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu responsible for "thwarting the mediators' efforts", delaying an agreement and exposing Israeli hostages in Gaza to the same aggression faced by Palestinians. The mediating countries - Qatar, the United States and Egypt - have so far failed to narrow enough differences to reach an agreement in months of on-off negotiations, and violence continued unabated in the Gaza Strip on Sunday. Israeli strikes killed at least 21 people in Gaza on Sunday, Reuters reported citing Palestinian authorities. Truce talks to continue this week The talks towards the ceasefire would continue this week in Cairo, and Blinken would try to secure a breakthrough after the US put forward bridging proposals that the mediating countries believe would close gaps between the warring parties. There has been increased urgency to reach a ceasefire deal amid fears of escalation across the wider region. Iran has threatened to retaliate against Israel after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month. Hamas has pushed for a ceasefire deal to end the war, while Israel has not been willing to agree to go beyond a temporary pause in the fighting. (With inputs from agencies)

United States President Joe Biden said on Friday (Aug 16) that he was optimistic about the prospects of reaching a ceasefire and hostage deal in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

United States President Joe Biden said on Friday (Aug 16) that he was optimistic about the prospects of reaching a ceasefire and hostage deal in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Speaking to reporters in Hagerstown, Maryland, Biden was asked about the status of the ceasefire talks to which he said, "...it’s still in play. I’m optimistic, it’s far from over. Just a couple more issues, I think we’ve got a shot." Biden pointed out that he was more optimistic (about the deal) than he had been in the past few months. Truce talks paused, negotiators to meet again Biden's remarks came as truce talks in Doha, Qatar paused on Friday with negotiators to meet again next week. A report by the news agency Reuters said that in a joint statement, the US, Qatar and Egypt said Washington presented a new proposal. Also read | Gaza war: US, Qatar and Egypt put forward ‘bridging proposal’, Hamas rejects Israel’s conditions Meanwhile, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty demanded an immediate ceasefire deal. Foreign Minister Abdelatty made this remark as he was on a visit to Lebanon amid border hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel turning into an all-out war. Speaking in a joint press conference with his Lebanese counterpart Abdallah Bou Habib at the end of his visit, Abdelatty said Egypt will continue its effort to reach a ceasefire deal. "A deal that leads to an immediate ceasefire, an end to the killing of civilians and an exchange of prisoners and hostages is the key to the beginning of the solution in this region, the beginning of a de-escalation, and the beginning to prevent the region from slipping into the furnace of a comprehensive war," he said. Death toll in Gaza Strip over 40,000 The latest bloodshed in the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict was triggered on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Starbucks on Tuesday (August 13) replaced its incumbent CEO Laxman Narasimhan with former Chipotle executive Brian Niccol amid growing scepticism over the global coffee chain's financial health due to declining sales partly attributed to a broader backlash over the company's alleged links to Israel.

As Israel's war in Gaza, which began in October last year, continues with Washington's visible support to the Israeli side, several American multinationals, including Starbucks, have been facing consumer backlash.

Starbucks boycott and a new CEO

The controversy began with a letter, now denounced as fake by Starbucks, that claimed the company was funding the Israeli military amid the raging war in Gaza. The claim sparked outrage against Starbucks in West Asia and parts of the world sympathetic to the Palestinian cause.

The boycott gained traction with many continuing to say that Starbucks is either directly or indirectly supporting Israel.

Starbucks has denied claims of supporting Israel or any other government or military operation in West Asia.

Starbucks boycott and a new CEO The controversy began with a letter, now denounced as fake by Starbucks, that claimed the company was funding the Israeli military amid the raging war in Gaza. Gaza war backlash costing Starbucks? Here's what we know

Qatari and Egyptian mediators in the ongoing Gaza war told Israel that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar wants a ceasefire deal, just three days ahead of a fresh round of truce talks, CNN reported on Sunday (Aug 11) citing an Israeli source.

Whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wanted a ceasefire deal was uncertain. Earlier, two other Israeli sources told CNN that Prime Minister Netanyahu's allies told the media and government officials that "Bibi" (Netanyahu's nickname) was ready to make a deal, regardless of the impact on his governing coalition. Also read | Gaza war: Israel expands evacuation orders in Gaza Strip following school attack However, the Israeli security establishment remained considerably more skeptical about Netanyahu’s willingness to strike a deal given fierce opposition from far-right ministers in his coalition. One of the above two Israeli sources told the network that no one knew what Netanyahu wanted. Hamas doubtful of participating in Aug 15 truce talks Though the Qatari and Egyptian mediators said that Yahya Sinwar wanted a ceasefire deal, Hamas on Sunday cast doubt on its participation in the fresh round of talks on Thursday (Aug 15). In a statement, Hamas said it demanded the mediators to present a plan to implement what they presented to the movement and agreed upon on July 2, "based on United States (US) President Joe Biden's vision and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution, and to compel the occupation to do so, instead of going for further negotiation rounds or new proposals." Why this stance by Hamas? Citing officials, CNN reported that this stance of Hamas was influenced by an Israeli strike on the Al-Tabin school complex compound in the Gaza Strip that killed at least 100 people. Also watch | Is Lebanon in 'regional' war with Israel? × The school compound was housing displaced Palestinian families. The Israeli strike drew international condemnation. Gaza war | Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar wants ceasefire deal: Mediators tell Israel

Palestinians fled southern Gaza's main city on Sunday as Israel warned of a new military operation, a day after one of the deadliest reported strikes in more than 10 months of war.

The fighting in the besieged Gaza Strip between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants since Hamas's October 7 attack has sent tensions soaring across the region, including in the occupied West Bank, where medics said an Israeli man was killed Sunday in a shooting.

Intense diplomacy in recent days sought to avert a wider war in the Middle East following the killings of Iran-aligned militant leaders, while international mediators invited Israel and Hamas to resume stalled talks towards a long-sought Gaza truce and hostage-release deal.

AFP journalists said hundreds of Palestinians fled northern neighbourhoods of Khan Yunis, southern Gaza's main city already ravaged by months of bombardment and battles, after Israel issued fresh evacuation orders in the early morning.

The military dropped leaflets and sent mobile phone messages warning of "dangerous combat" in Al-Jalaa district and telling Palestinian residents to leave the area, which until Sunday was designated a humanitarian safe zone.

Similar evacuation orders have preceded major military incursions, often forcing Palestinians displaced numerous times by the war to pack up and leave for safety.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, said that "just in the past few days, more than 75,000 people have been displaced in southwest Gaza." The entire territory has a population of about 2.4 million people.

The military said in a statement that its forces were "about to operate against the terrorist organisations in the area", calling on "the remaining population left in the Al-Jalaa neighbourhood to temporarily evacuate".

Families gathered their meagre belongings as crowds of people left Al-Jalaa, some loading mattresses, clothing, and cooking utensils into pick-up trucks. Others took to the road on foot.

Umm Sami Shahada, a 55-year-old displaced Palestinian, said she had "fled Gaza City at the start of the war for Khan Yunis", hoping to find shelter.

"My daughter was killed in bombardment, so we went to Rafah, then we came back here, and now with this new evacuation order, we don't know where to go", she said.

- 'Torn into pieces' -

In northern Gaza, an Israeli air strike on Friday killed at least 93 people at a religious school housing displaced Palestinians, according to civil defence rescuers, sparking international condemnation.

Israel said it targeted militants operating out of Gaza City's Al-Tabieen school and mosque with "precise munitions", declaring that "at least 19 Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists were eliminated".

The death toll, which AFP could not independently verify, would be one of the largest from a single strike since the war began.

Mahmud Bassal, spokesman for the civil defence agency in Hamas-run Gaza, said on Sunday that identifying the victims could take at least two days as "we have many bodies torn into pieces" and "shredded or burnt by the bombs".

Hamas, in a statement, called Arab and Muslim nations to "take effective decisions" to stop the war and demanded an urgent UN Security Council meeting to force Israel "to stop the aggression and genocide".

The Palestinian group, which has named its Gaza chief Yahya Sinwar to succeed slain political leader Ismail Haniyeh, has yet to respond to an invitation from US, Qatari and Egyptian mediators for truce negotiations on August 15 Israel has accepted.

Haniyeh was killed during a visit to Tehran on July 31, an attack blamed on Israel, which has not claimed responsibility. But hours earlier, it killed the military chief of Lebanese Hamas ally Hezbollah in a strike on Beirut.

Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and other regional allies have vowed retaliation, spurring fears of a wider conflagration.

US President Joe Biden, asked what his message was to Iran, responded: "Don't."

- 'Decisive step' -

The Gaza war began with Hamas's October 7 attack on southern Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,198 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Militants also seized 251 people, 111 of whom are still held captive in Gaza, including 39 the military says are dead.

Israel's retaliatory military offensive in Gaza has killed at least 39,790 people, according to the territory's health ministry, which does not provide details on civilian and militant deaths.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a phone call on Sunday that "an end to the war in Gaza would be a decisive step towards a regional de-escalation".

Hamas officials, some analysts and critics in Israel have said Netanyahu has sought to prolong the fighting for political gain.

Witnesses told AFP that Israel carried out a strike on Khan Yunis, wounding several people.

"Civilians... were shopping in the market when a missile hit," said resident Awad Barbakh.

The military said its air forces hit militants in Rafah, further south, and "struck approximately 30 Hamas terror targets" across Gaza over the past day.

Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT), a tech industry counter-terrorism organisation, has expressed concerns over content posted on Elon Musk's social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) by Hamas and is worried about the social media platform's membership on its board. According to a report by The Sunday Times, on Monday (Aug 12), the GIFCT believed that the group's credibility was undermined by X's membership and position on its board. X has not yet reacted to this development. Microsoft, Facebook, and YouTube are part of the GIFCT and X is a founding member of the organisation. The GIFCT was created in 2017 under pressure from the United States (US) and European countries. 'The easiest social media platform to find Hamas videos' Citing the Community Security Trust (CST), The Sunday Times report said that X was now the easiest social media platform to find Hamas videos. The report added that within 10 minutes, researchers were able to find X propaganda videos from UK government-proscribed terrorist groups Hamas, Hezbollah, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Also read | Venezuela blocks social media platform X for 10 days Earlier, a statement in the GIFCT's independent advisory committee annual 2023 report had expressed concerns over online trust and safety directed at X. The advisory body said it had become "increasingly concerned by significant reductions in online trust and safety capabilities for certain platforms, and a perceived decrease in the priority of the issue, negatively impacting companies' ability to moderate extremist content online." 'Musk let banned extremists back on X' The Sunday Times report also alleged that Musk had let banned extremists back on to X, allowed anyone to pay for a verification mark and sacked a large part of its content moderation team. The report added this was part of his strategy of turning X into a "free speech" platform. These above developments come days after Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro banned X from his country for 10 days amid a furore over the July 28 disputed presidential election. Maduro won the election, as per Venezuela's electoral authority. 'It threatens our...': Anti-terror tech group concerned over content posted on Elon Musk's X by Hamas

When the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a group whose founders included Robert Oppenheimer and Albert Einstein, reset its famous Doomsday Clock earlier this year, it issued a dark warning: “Ominous trends continue to point the world towards global catastrophe.”

The Bulletin’s board, which lists nine Nobel laureates, set the clock at 90 seconds to midnight, the theoretical deadline of an apocalypse. It was unchanged from the previous year but the closest to midnight since the Bulletin issued its first doomsday clock.

That was in 1947, two years after the end of World War II and the first, and so far only, use of nuclear weapons – the American bombs dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bombings killed an estimated 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 74,000 in Nagasaki.

In 1947, the doomsday clock stood at seven minutes to midnight. Two years later, after the Soviet Union exploded a nuclear device, prompting the US-Soviet nuclear arms race, the clock was set to three minutes. The farthest it was from midnight – 17 minutes – was in 1991 at the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union.

What prompted the Atomic Scientists to push the clock’s minute hand closer to 12? They listed a variety of threats, including Russia’s war of choice against Ukraine, the decline of nuclear arms reduction agreements, the climate crisis and the advance of Artificial Intelligence that could change the nature of future wars and magnify disinformation that could make it harder to solve the world’s existential challenges.

Since the annual presentation of the Doomsday scenario, at the beginning of the year, clouds over the future have become darker. Israel’s war on Gaza has laid waste to large parts of the enclave and killed an estimated 40,000 Palestinians. Negotiations with Hamas, the group that started the war with a massacre in October 2023, have so far been fruitless.

Tensions in the Middle East prompted fears of a wider war, involving Iran, after the assassination of the Hamas leader who led negotiations while on a visit to Iran. Ismail Haniyeh was killed in a government guest house in Tehran just hours after he attended the inauguration of Iran’s new president. The Iranian government blamed Israel and vowed retaliation.

Haniyeh died in July. A few weeks later, things took a turn for the worse on another flashpoint of geopolitical confrontation.
In the first week of August, Ukrainian tanks and infantry stormed across the Russian border and captured territory in the Kursk region. It was the first

Ukrainian cross-border operation and the first time since World War II that a foreign army pushed into Russia. Within a few days, the Ukrainians advanced 30 kilometres and Russian authorities ordered the evacuation of 76,000 civilians.

The assault shocked the Kremlin. Videos showing Russian troops surrendering enraged Russian President Vladimir Putin. The unexpected Ukrainian action looked certain to make a bloody war even bloodier.

There have been dark warnings from the Kremlin on the possibility of using nuclear weapons in the confrontation with Ukraine. That is a prospect of deep worry not only for Western governments but also for the most authoritative publicly available source on the state of nuclear arsenals around the world – the Stockholm International Peace Institute (SIPRI).

SIPRI publishes an annual assessment on international security, the state of armaments, and disarmament. The institute’s annual yearbooks are usually published a few months after the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The latest, in June, paints a bleak picture of the dangers facing the world.

SIPRI’s assessment of the nuclear scene comes in the introduction to its yearbook. “The nine nuclear-armed states – the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel – continued to modernise their nuclear arsenals and several deployed new nuclear-armed or nuclear-capable weapon systems in 2023.”

It singled out India, Pakistan and North Korea for pursuing the capability to deploy multiple warheads on ballistic missiles to catch up with the countries that already have such weapons – the US, Russia, France, Britain and most recently China, which is said to plan to double its nuclear arsenal to 1,000 in the next five years.

The drive for more lethal weapons comes against the background of major arms-control setbacks in 2023. Russia suspended its participation in the 2010 Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Nuclear Arms, also known as New START. It was the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty limiting Russian and US strategic nuclear forces.

New START is set to expire in February 2026, by which time there will be no major treaty limits on the number of strategic weapons the United States and Russia deploy. Already, the two nations disclose virtually no information about their arsenals to each other.

“We have not seen nuclear weapons playing such a prominent role in international relations since the Cold War,” said Wilfred Wan, who heads SIPRI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Programme. “It is hard to believe that barely two years have passed since the leaders of the five largest nuclear-armed states jointly reaffirmed that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought."

During the Cold War, the then Soviet Union and the United States, holders of the largest nuclear arsenals by far, subscribed to the concept of MAD – Mutually Assured Destruction. That acknowledged that a nuclear strike that devastated one superpower would trigger a counter-strike that would wipe out the other.

Just a few weeks after the SIPRI comment on the prominent role in international relations of nuclear weapons, China said it had halted nuclear arms-control talks with Washington in protest against American sales of weapons to Taiwan, a self-governing democratic island Beijing considers a breakaway province.

China has not ruled out military force to bring the island, 100 miles from the Chinese mainland, under control. The Chinese leadership’s decision to halt talks with Washington, and join Russia, highlights the ever-tightening links between China and Russia.

That brings to mind an observation by the American political theorist Francis Fukuyama, who became famous with a book entitled The End of History which argued that with the spread of Western liberal democracy humanity had reached the end of history.

It was published after the end of the Cold War, at a time when Western leaders were fond of talking about the “peace dividend” that would allow them to spend less on the military and more on social programmes.

History took a different course and three decades after “the end of history”, Fukuyama, now a professor at Stanford, sees a geo-political combination of forces that could lead to “the ultimate nightmare.”

In a 2022 interview, he listed the main elements of that nightmare: 1) China backing Russia’s war on Ukraine and 2) Beijing invading Taiwan. One of the elements became reality on February 24, 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine and China, according to Western officials, began shipping to Russia machine tools, semiconductors and “dual use” parts that have become vital to Russia’s arms industry.

China’s role was branded as that of a “decisive enabler” of the Russian war by a meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance (NATO) in Washington in July. The Kremlin shrugged off the criticism.

The one part missing from “The Ultimate Nightmare” is a Chinese invasion of US-backed Taiwan. If the United States and the rest of the West couldn’t stop that happening, Fukuyama said, “then that really is the end of history.”

History took a different course and three decades after “the end of history”, Fukuyama, now a professor at Stanford, sees a geo-political combination of forces that could lead to “the ultimate nightmare.” In a 2022 interview, he listed the main elements of that nightmare: 1) China backing Russia’s war on Ukraine and 2) Beijing invading Taiwan. If the United States and the rest of the West couldn’t stop that happening, Fukuyama said, “then that really is the end of history.” (Disclaimer: The writer's views do not represent those of WION or ZMCL. The Israeli military expanded evacuation orders in the Gaza Strip's Khan Younis late Saturday (Aug 10), forcing tens of thousands of Palestinian residents and displaced families to leave as explosions from tank shelling reverberated around them. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the military said it was attacking Hamas militants who were using those areas to stage attacks and fire rockets. Reuters reported that in Khan Yunis, the evacuation order covered districts in the centre, east and west, making it one of the largest such orders in the 10-month-old war. "For your own safety, you must evacuate immediately to the newly created humanitarian zone. The area you are in is considered a dangerous combat zone," the military said in a post on X. The Israeli military said that the death toll from the strike was inflated and 19 militants were among the dead. "The strike was carried out using three precise munitions, which can not cause the amount of damage that is being reported," it said in a statement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said on Thursday (Aug 8) that his government agreed to resume the Gaza war ceasefire talks on August 15 at the demand of US, Qatari, and Egyptian mediators.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said on Thursday (Aug 8) that his government agreed to resume the Gaza war ceasefire talks on August 15 at the demand of US, Qatari, and Egyptian mediators. Following a week-long ceasefire in November last year, mediators have endeavoured to secure a second truce in the 10-month-old war. In a joint statement, the US, Qatar, and Egypt invited the warring parties (Israel and Hamas) to resume talks on August 15 in Doha or Cairo "to close all remaining gaps and commence implementation of the deal without further delay." Israel to send a negotiating team On Thursday, Netanyahu's office said that Israel would be sending a negotiating team on August 15 to conclude the details of implementing a ceasefire deal. A report by the news agency AFP said that a prospective cessation of hostilities also involving the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip and scaled-up aid deliveries has centred around a phased deal beginning with an initial truce. Recent discussions have focused on a framework outlined by US President Joe Biden in late May which he said had been proposed by Israel. "It's not like the agreement's going to be ready to sign on Thursday. There's still a significant amount of work to do," a senior Biden administration official said of the talks. This official said that Israel had been very receptive to the idea of the talks, rejecting suggestions that Netanyahu was stalling on a deal. Netanyahu apologises for Oct 7 attack Also last week, Netanyahu apologised for the October 7 attack by Hamas happening on his watch and warned that Israel now faced a full-fledged Iranian axis. Speaking to Time magazine, the Israeli prime minister said, " ...I am sorry, deeply, that something like this happened. And you always look back and you say, ‘Could we have done things that would have prevented it?" "We’re facing not merely Hamas. We’re facing a full-fledged Iranian axis, and we understand that we have to organize ourselves for broader defence," he added. (With inputs from agencies)

German court rejects motion to stop the federal government from supplying arms to Israel According to media reports, a Berlin court on Friday denied a plea to stop German military sales to Israel. This was the second legal attempt to stop the federal government from supplying arms to Israel, made by a father and son from the Gaza Strip. The first attempt was an urgent request to stop the export of German weapons to Israel by a number of Gazans which was also rejected by a Berlin administrative court. This time around the Palestinian request sought to halt arms shipments through what is known as interim legal protection. However, the higher court noted that it's impossible to definitively predict the future decisions of the federal government or the specific legal and factual circumstances under which these decisions will be made. The court also stated that it cannot be predicted if the German government would authorise arms deliveries that breach international law. The military claimed that an Israeli attack had hit Hamas command centres, but Gaza's civil defence service said that the strike had struck two schools in Gaza City on Sunday, killing at least 30 people. Based on a count of tolls previously provided by Hamas officials, these make up the total number of schools in Gaza that have been attacked since July 6 at least 11, killing around 150 people. "The number of martyrs in the massacre of the Hassan Salameh and Al-Nasr schools' bombing has risen to 30. Dozens were also wounded," civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP. According to a civil defence spokesman, women and children made up the majority of the wounded and deceased. He stated that the schools housed Palestinians who had been displaced as a result of the continuing conflict between Israel and Hamas terrorists. The two schools were the target of an attack that was verified by the Israeli military. Hamas has been accused by the Israeli military on many occasions of hiding its commanders and militants and utilising civilian buildings as command and control centres. Hamas refutes these accusations According to an AFP count based on official Israeli data, 1,197 people, mostly civilians, lost their lives in the October 7 attack by Hamas militants in Israel, which marked the start of the Gaza War. Militants also abducted 251 persons, 111 of whom are still hostages in Gaza, including 39 who the IDF claims are dead. France also advised its nationals in Iran to "temporarily leave," citing potential closures of Iranian airspace and airports. US says it's prepared for 'every possibility' as Middle East tensions rise After the Pentagon announced an increased US military presence in the Middle East, White House Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer affirmed, "We are preparing for every possibility." Speaking on ABC News, Finer added, "The Pentagon is moving significant assets to the region, to prepare for what may be another need to defend Israel from an attack, while simultaneously we are working very hard to deescalate this situation diplomatically because we do not believe that a regional war is in anyone's interest in the current moment." Israel Hamas war: Israeli strikes hit Gaza schools, hospital; nations advise citizens to leave Lebanon

General Michael Kurilla, the commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM), arrived in Israel on Saturday (Aug 3) amid escalating threats of significant Iranian retaliation against Israel, following a series of targeted killings, according to an Axios report.

The report, citing two US officials, suggests that Kurilla's visit aims to bring along Washington's allies in West Asia to thwart any potential attack from Iran, similar to the one on Israel on April 13. But the expected retaliation is likely to be on a much larger scale.

The Biden administration is reportedly concerned about the difficulty in garnering support from West Asia's capitals due to Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh's killing.

The assassination is viewed in the broader scope of the internal conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Israeli and US officials have warned that an attack could occur as early as Monday (Aug 5).

Although Kurilla's trip was planned before the assassinations of Hezbollah’s Fuad Shukr in Lebanon and Hamas' Ismail Haniyeh in Iran, he is leveraging the visit to strengthen regional defences for Israel.

During his visit, Kurilla is also expected to travel to Jordan and several Gulf countries.

Following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Iranian officials have vowed severe retaliation. Israel remains on high alert for a possible attack while the United States is deploying additional forces to the region.

At least 15 Palestinians were killed by an Israeli attack on a Gaza City school that was housing displaced people on Saturday (Aug 3), hours after two strikes in the occupied West Bank killed nine militants, including a local Hamas leader, according to the Palestinian militant group.

The Israeli military said that the first airstrike in the West Bank targeted a vehicle in a town near Tulkarm, aiming at a militant group heading to launch an attack.

According to a statement by Hamas, one of those killed was a leader of the organisation's Tulkarm brigades, while its ally Islamic Jihad said the other four people killed in the hit were combatants.

Hours later, Israel's military claimed a second bombing in the vicinity targeted another group of militants who had fired on forces, as part of a counter-terrorism operation in Tulkarm.

According to the Palestinian news agency WAFA, four people were killed in that strike, while Hamas claimed that all nine of those killed in the two Israeli assaults in the West Bank were militants.

Violence in the West Bank had been increasing even before the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and has continued to rise, with frequent Israeli raids in the area, which Palestinians aim to include in their state.

According to the Hamas-government media office, at least 15 people were killed in the Gaza Strip after Israel struck a school housing displaced residents in Gaza City's Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood.

The Israeli military claims the school was being used by Hamas as a command centre, to conceal militants, and to produce weapons. Hamas has rejected these accusations, saying they do not use civilian sites like schools and hospitals for military purposes.

According to Gaza health officials, Israel's military operation has killed at least 39,550 Palestinians since the beginning of the war. The conflict was initiated by a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, which led to the killing of 1,200 people, while 250 others were taken as hostages, according to Israeli officials.
