Audience shouts 'shame', delegates walk out as Israel's Netanyahu addresses UNGA

UN&nbsp;Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told world leaders on Tuesday that Lebanon was "at the brink" and warned against allowing the country to turn into "another Gaza," a day after Israeli strikes killed more than 550 people there.

"Gaza is a non-stop nightmare that threatens to take the entire region with it. Look no further than Lebanon," Guterres said at the opening of the&nbsp;UN's annual gathering as hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, an Iran-backed armed group, threatened to plunge the region into all-out war.&nbsp;

"We should all be alarmed by the escalation. Lebanon is at the brink. The people of Lebanon, the people of Israel, and the people of the world cannot afford Lebanon to become another Gaza."

War featured prominently in the&nbsp;UN&nbsp;chief's remarks, with references to Gaza, Lebanon, Ukraine, Sudan, and other ongoing conflicts.

"Nothing can justify the abhorrent acts of terror committed by Hamas on October 7, or the taking of hostages -- both of which I have repeatedly condemned," said the 75-year-old former prime minister of Portugal.&nbsp;

"And nothing can justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people," he continued.

Humanity faces three major threats to sustainability that must be confronted, said Guterres: impunity, which erodes international law; inequality, which destabilizes nations; and uncertainty, "where unmanaged global risks threaten our future in unknowable ways."

Uncertainty, he said, was compounded by the existential threats of the climate crisis -- long a signature issue for the&nbsp;UN&nbsp;chief&nbsp;-- and the rapid advance of artificial intelligence, which he said would require a global approach to manage.

"We are in a climate meltdown," Guterres stressed, warning that the world is on course to "careen past the global limit of a 1.5 degrees (Celsius) temperature rise" -- a goal set by the Paris Agreement that scientists say is necessary to prevent the worst impacts from humanity's consumption of fossil fuels.

Still, he expressed hope, citing the plummeting costs and accelerating deployment of renewable energy, as he called on rich nations to step up their climate financing ahead of the COP29 meeting, which will take place in Azerbaijan this November.

United States (US) President Joe Biden said on Sunday (Sep 22) that Washington would do everything possible to prevent an escalation of war in the Middle East, as hostilities flared between Israel and Iran-aligned Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. Addressing a press conference at the White House, President Biden said he was worried about rising regional tensions. He said that the US administration was "going to do everything we can to keep a wider war from breaking out." "And we're still pushing hard," the president added. Israel and Hezbollah threaten to escalate cross-border attacks Biden's remarks came as both Israel and Hezbollah on Sunday threatened to escalate their cross-border attacks despite a chorus of international calls for both sides to step back from the brink of all-out war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said after intense rocket fire from Lebanon that Israel has dealt "a series of blows on Hezbollah that it could have never imagined." Hezbollah deputy chief Naim Qassem, meanwhile, said the group was in a "new phase" in its battle against Israel. Lebanon's health ministry said the strike killed 45 people. It came after a series of coordinated communications device blasts last Tuesday and Wednesday across Lebanon that killed 39 people and wounded almost 3,000, and which were blamed on Israel. Israel- Hezbollah tensions | US will do everything possible to prevent escalation of war in Middle East: Biden

The Israeli military on Monday told people in Lebanon to move away from Hezbollah targets and vowed to carry out more "extensive and precise" strikes against the Iran-backed group.

It was the first such warning issued to Lebanese people by Israel's military since the war in Gaza erupted nearly a year ago. Lebanon's Hezbollah says its rocket and other fire into Israel is an act of support for Gaza's Palestinian Hamas militants.

"We advise civilians from Lebanese villages located in and next to buildings and areas used by Hezbollah for military purposes, such as those used to store weapons, to immediately move out of harm's way for their own safety," Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a media briefing.

"The IDF (military) will engage in (more) extensive and precise strikes against terror targets which have been embedded widely throughout Lebanon."

Hagari said the military had launched new strikes against Hezbollah sites since Monday morning.

"The strikes will go on for the near future," he said.

In a separate briefing to journalists, a military official emphasised that the appeal made to Lebanese people was the first of its kind.

"This the first time that we do this kind of warning in that way," said the official, who cannot be further identified under military rules.

"If you are in a house where there is a rocket or a cruise missile, get out immediately," the official said, adding that the military was "monitoring from the air" to gauge compliance.

"We are giving them an advance warning. Get out of the house. We are aiming only on the capabilities of the rockets, on the missiles, launchers, etc," he said.

The official also said the Israeli military was currently only focused on an "aerial campaign".

The first goal of the operation, he said, was to "degrade threats" from Hezbollah, while the second was to push Hezbollah back from the border and the third was to destroy infrastructure built near the border by Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force.

He said Israel's "pre-emptive" strikes had already hindered Hezbollah's ability to fire rockets.

"We've been doing it for already a long time, but we are doing it extensively in the last couple of days and also yesterday, and that's one of the reasons that the numbers (of rockets fired) are down," he added.

Get out immediately: Israeli military tells people in Lebanon to move away from Hezbollah targets

Iran-backed Hezbollah fired more than 100 projectiles from southern Lebanon on Sunday (Sep 22) in what is believed to be the deepest rocket attack into Israel since the start of the Gaza war.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Israeli military said that "approximately 20 projectiles were identified crossing from Lebanon" shortly before 5:00 am (0200 GMT), followed by a barrage of "approximately 85 projectiles" launched from Lebanon after 6:00 am (0300 GMT).

The Air Force said some of the rockets were&nbsp;intercepted, while some impacted Kiryat Bialik, near Haifa, and Moreshet, a community in the Lower Galilee. Three people were wounded in&nbsp;Kiryat Bialik after being hit by shrapnel and were taken to hospital.&nbsp;

The victims include a man in his 70s in moderate condition, another man in his 70s, and a 16-year-old girl who is lightly hurt.

"Hundreds of thousands of Israeli civilians spent their night hiding in bomb shelters, while barrages of rockets were flying over their heads, some hitting their homes, and rocket alert sirens were constantly sounding throughout the night," the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).&nbsp;

The Hezbollah attack came hours after Israeli strikes dismantled approximately 180 targets and thousands of launchers barrels which the militant outfit was preparing for immediate use against Israeli citizens.&nbsp;

However, the Lebanese militant group said the rocket fire was&nbsp;“an initial response” to the pager blasts last week, which killed more than 30 members of the outfit and wounded thousands of others.

Iran-backed Hezbollah fired more than 100 projectiles from southern Lebanon on Sunday (Sep 22) in what is believed to be the deepest rocket attack into Israel since the start of the Gaza war.

Iran-backed Hezbollah fired more than 100 projectiles from southern Lebanon on Sunday (Sep 22) in what is believed to be the deepest rocket attack into Israel since the start of the Gaza war. The Israeli military said that "approximately 20 projectiles were identified crossing from Lebanon" shortly before 5:00 am (0200 GMT), followed by a barrage of "approximately 85 projectiles" launched from Lebanon after 6:00 am (0300 GMT). The Air Force said some of the rockets were intercepted, while some impacted Kiryat Bialik, near Haifa, and Moreshet, a community in the Lower Galilee. Three people were wounded in Kiryat Bialik after being hit by shrapnel and were taken to hospital. The victims include a man in his 70s in moderate condition, another man in his 70s, and a 16-year-old girl who is lightly hurt. "Hundreds of thousands of Israeli civilians spent their night hiding in bomb shelters, while barrages of rockets were flying over their heads, some hitting their homes, and rocket alert sirens were constantly sounding throughout the night," the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Morning brief: Trump rejects second debate with Harris; Gaza war updates, and more

Gaza's civil defence agency said an Israeli strike Saturday on a school-turned-shelter in the Palestinian territory's largest city killed 22&nbsp;people, while Israel's military said it targeted Hamas militants.

"Civil Defence crews recovered 22&nbsp;people, including 13 children and six women", one of whom was pregnant, said agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal.

There were "around 30 injured, including nine children (needing) limb amputations, as a result of an Israeli bombing on Al-Zaytoun School C" in Gaza City, he said.

The health ministry in the Hamas-run territory earlier said 21 people were killed.

Thousands of displaced people had sought shelter at the school, Bassal said.

Israel's military said in a statement the air force had "conducted a precise strike on terrorists who were operating inside a Hamas command and control centre in Gaza City".

It said the target was "embedded inside" the Al Falah School, adjacent to the Al-Zaytoun School buildings.

An AFP reporter at the scene confirmed that Al-Zaytoun School C had been hit.

Witnesses said that before the strike, orphans had gathered there because they were due to receive sponsorship from a local NGO for humanitarian assistance.

Israel's military did not provide a death toll but said "numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including the use of precise munitions, aerial surveillance and additional intelligence".

It was the latest in a series of Israeli strikes on school buildings housing displaced people in Gaza.

A strike on the United Nations-run Al-Jawni School in central Gaza on September 11 drew international outcry after the UN agency for Palestinian refugees said six of its staffers were among the 18 reported fatalities.

The Israeli military accuses Hamas of hiding in school buildings where many thousands of Gazans have sought shelter -- a charge denied by the Palestinian militant group.

Hamas on Saturday condemned the strike on Al-Zaytoun School C, describing it in a statement as "a war crime under American cover", a reference to Washington being Israel's most important military backer.

"There has also been an increase in attacks on residential neighbourhoods and tents of displaced people," the Hamas statement said.

The vast majority of the Gaza Strip's 2.4 million people have been displaced at least once by the ongoing war, which was triggered by Hamas's October 7 attack on Israel.

<h2>'Health ministry staffers killed'&nbsp;</h2>

The war has badly battered Gaza's health sector, and the World Health Organization said earlier this month that only 17 of its 36 hospitals were partially functional.&nbsp;

Gaza's health ministry said on Saturday that in a separate incident, an Israeli air strike hit a warehouse in a "densely populated" area of southern Gaza, killing "three ministry of health personnel and a passer-by" and injuring six others.

"The warehouse was directly targeted with several missiles while doctors and staff were performing their duties, preparing to transport the medicines stored there to hospitals under the ministry of health that are facing severe shortages of medicines and supplies," a statement said.

Israel's military had no immediate comment on the warehouse strike.

Hamas's October 7 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,205 people on the Israeli side, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures, which includes hostages killed in captivity.

Out of 251 people taken hostage that day, 97 are still being held inside the Gaza Strip, including 33 who the Israeli military says are dead.

At least 41,391 Palestinians, a majority of them civilians, have been killed in Israel's military campaign in Gaza since the war began, according to data provided by the health ministry there.

The United Nations has acknowledged these figures as reliable.

Gaza war: 22 killed as IDF targets school-turned-shelter, Israel says it hit militants

Iran-aligned Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said on Saturday (Sept 21) that a second senior commander was among 15 of its fighters killed in an Israeli air strike on its Beirut stronghold the previous day.

Iran-aligned Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said on Saturday (Sept 21) that a second senior commander was among 15 of its fighters killed in an Israeli air strike on its Beirut stronghold the previous day. Hezbollah said Ahmed Mahmud Wahbi led the military operations of its elite Radwan Force in support of Hamas between October 7 when the Palestinian militant group attacked Israel, triggering the Gaza war at the start of this year. The Israeli military said that its air strike on Beirut's southern suburbs on Friday eliminated Radwan Force chief Ibrahim Aqil and several other commanders. Who was the first Hezbollah commander killed in Israeli strike? On Friday, the Israeli military said citing sources that Aqil had been killed with other senior members of an elite Hezbollah unit in the airstrike. The Lebanese militant group confirmed Aqil's death in a statement just after midnight that called him "one of its top leaders," without providing details of how he died. Also read | Who was Ibrahim Aqil, chief of Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force, killed in Israeli strike In a second statement issued later, Hezbollah said Aqil was killed in Beirut's southern suburbs of Dahiyeh in what it called a "treacherous Israeli assassination." According to Lebanon's health ministry, at least 14 people were killed in the strike and the death toll was expected to rise as rescue teams worked through. The ministry did not reveal whether the toll included Aqil or any other Hezbollah commanders. 66 people injured in strikes Earlier, the ministry said at least 66 people were injured, nine of whom were in critical condition. Till now, only Wahbi and Aqil are the commanders Hezbollah said that had been killed in Friday's strike. Citing a security source, a report by the news agency Reuters said at least six other Hezbollah commanders died in the strike. The militant group said that several of its members were killed but it did not disclose whether they were commanders or its foot soldiers. (With inputs from agencies)

Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar in a letter dated Monday (Sep 9) has reportedly thanked Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah for its support in the ongoing war against Israel. Addressing Hassan Nasrallah, Sinwar expressed his gratitude for the “blessed acts” of the Iran-backed group since the war started on October 7 when Hamas reportedly killed more than 1,200 people in Israel.

Sinwar is currently hiding in Gaza, and the Israel&nbsp;Defense Forces (IDF) had earlier launched a manhunt for him. He was appointed shortly after Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Iran on July 31, an act the group blamed on Israel.

Sinwar reportedly wrote the letter to Nasrallah in response to a condolence message sent by the Hezbollah chief following the death of Haniyeh.

Sinwar in his letter wrote that Hamas will stick to Haniyeh’s policy of boosting ties with Iran.

“[Hamas] and its fighters will continue to follow [Haniyeh’s positions], foremost of which is Palestinian unity on the choice of jihad and resistance, and the unity of the nation, with the axis of resistance at its heart,” he stated in his letter.

He said that Hamas will remain dedicated to the cause “until the occupation is defeated and swept away from our land, and the establishment of our independent, fully sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital.”

Sinwar lauded Tebboune’s support to the Palestinians while lashing out at “the occupation” for its “barbarity.”

Sinwar, thought to be on Israel’s hit list, has largely remained silent and underground in Gaza for over a decade. He is considered the mastermind behind the October 7 attacks on Israel, which ignited a war in which more than 40,000&nbsp;people have been killed.

Morning brief: Gaza war updates; Pakistan cops arrest top PTI leaders, and more

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday (September 09) called for a swift ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Speaking at the first India-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting, Jaishankar said that the escalating situation in Gaza is the top priority.

“India’s position in this regard has been principled and consistent. While we condemn acts of terrorism and hostage-taking, we are deeply pained by the continuing death of innocent civilians. Any response must take into account the principles of humanitarian law. We support a ceasefire as soon as possible,” Jaishankar said.

"On the larger issue, we have consistently stood for a resolution of the Palestinian issue through a two-State solution. We have also contributed to the building of Palestinian institutions and capacities. Where the humanitarian situation is concerned, we have provided relief and increased our support to UNRWA," he added.

It lies about midway between Amman and Jerusalem, north of the Dead Sea. Following the incident, Jordan closed the King Hussein Bridge crossing with the occupied West Bank as it launched an investigation. Private security guards operate the crossing alongside Israeli security forces stationed there. Violence in the West Bank has soared since the war in Gaza broke out after the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. Since the Gaza war began, Israeli troops or settlers have killed at least 662 Palestinians in the West Bank, according to the claims of the Palestinian health ministry. US-Turkish woman shot dead at West Bank protest This incident near the Jordan border comes after an American-Turkish woman was shot dead while demonstrating against Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank town of Beita. Turkey identified the woman as Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, and condemned her death, while the United States called it a "tragic" event and pressed Israel to investigate. The UN rights office said Israeli forces killed Eygi with a "shot in the head." According to the UN, Eygi, 26, was participating in a "peaceful anti-settlement protest" in Beita, the scene of weekly demonstrations. (With inputs from agencies)

Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director William Burns said on Saturday (Sep 7) that a more detailed ceasefire proposal in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip would be made in the next several days. Burns is the chief US negotiator for an end to the war which has been going on since October 7 last year. He said he was working very hard on "texts and creative formulas" with mediators Qatar and Egypt to secure a ceasefire, by finding a proposal which satisfies both parties. 'Time has come to make hard choices...' Speaking at a Financial Times event in London alongside MI6 head Richard Moore, Burns said, "We will make this more detailed proposal, I hope in the next several days, and then we'll see." "My hope is that you know, they'll recognise what's at stake here and be willing to move ahead on that basis," he said. Gaza war enters 12th month The war entered its 12th month on Saturday. Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking about 251 hostages, according to Israeli tallies, while Israel's retaliatory offensive in Gaza has killed nearly 41,000 Palestinians. The US, Qatar and Egypt have all been mediating to bring about a ceasefire in the war. Of the 251 hostages seized by Palestinian militants during the attack, 97 remain in Gaza, including 33 the Israeli military says are dead. The United Nations on Saturday (Sept 7) called for a full investigation into the killing of a 26-year-old Turkish-American woman during a protest at the West Bank. The Israeli military has been accused by Palestinian and Turkish officials of killing the woman, identified as Aysenur Ezgi Eygi. The military said its troops had fired toward a male "main instigator" who posed a threat by hurling rocks at soldiers. "The details of the incident and the circumstances in which she was hit are under review," the military added. There was no immediate comment on the incident from Netanyahu's office. Who was Aysenur Ezgi Eygi? Citing Palestinian and Turkish officials, a report by the news agency Reuters said Eygi had been taking part in a protest against settlement expansion in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Friday. Palestinian officials described her as an activist from Seattle who held both US and Turkish citizenship. The incident occurred during a regular protest march by activists in Beita, a village near Nablus that has seen repeated attacks on Palestinians by Jewish settlers. 'Woman was shot in the head' According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Eygi was shot in the head. The ministry held the Israeli government responsible for her death. The White House said it was deeply disturbed by the death of Eygi and called on Israel to investigate. Speaking to Reuters, Fouad Nafaa, head of Rafidia Hospital in Nablus, said that the 26-year-old woman arrived there in critical condition, with a serious head injury. "We tried to perform a resuscitation operation on her, but unfortunately she died," Nafaa added. UN calls for full probe into killing of Turkish-American woman at West Bank protest

Israeli forces pulled out of the Palestinian city of Jenin on Friday, leaving a mass of damaged buildings and infrastructure, following one of the biggest security operations in the occupied West Bank in months.

Road diggers began clearing piles of debris and rubble left by the operation, which involved hundreds of troops and police backed by helicopters and drones entering all areas of the city and the adjacent refugee camp as well as surrounding villages.

Thousands of residents were displaced from their homes during the nine-day operation, during which troops fought running gunbattles with Palestinian fighters from factions including Hamas and Islamic Jihad and Fatah.

"When they entered, they used bulldozers and began destroying everything. They left nothing," said Jenin resident Samaher Abu Nassa.

Water and electricity services remain cut and around 20 km of roadway was dug up by Israeli bulldozers, a tactic the military said was aimed at neutralizing roadside bombs but which has ripped up much of the centre of the city.

A statement from the military said 30 explosives planted under the roads had been dismantled.

The Palestinian foreign ministry accused the military of transferring the tactics used to level the Gaza Strip into the West Bank.

Jenin, in the northern part of the West Bank, has long been a stronghold of Palestinian armed factions, and the Israeli military said the operation, which also targeted the city of Tulkarm, was aimed at thwarting Iranian-backed militant groups planning attacks on Israeli civilians.

It said troops had killed 14 militant fighters during the operation, including the local commander of Hamas in Jenin. Forces also arrested 30 suspects and confiscated weapons and dismantled infrastructure including an underground weapons storage depot underneath a mosque and an explosives workshop.

On Friday, thousands, including large numbers of armed men who fired into the air, joined funeral processions for people killed during the fighting. Many of the bodies were wrapped either in Palestinian flags or the green, black and yellow flags of Hamas, Islamic Jihad or Fatah.

While the Israeli military's main focus over most of the past year has been in Gaza, the West Bank has seen a surge in violence, with repeated clashes between the military and Palestinian fighters as well as raids by Jewish settlers on Palestinian villages and attacks by Palestinians on Israelis.

More than 680 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, according to Palestinian health ministry figures. Many have been armed fighters but others have been youths throwing stones at protests or civilians with no involvement in the violence.

In the same period, dozens of Israeli civilians have been killed in attacks by Palestinians or in rocket and missile attacks from the Iranian-backed Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Palestinian militant group Hamas on Thursday (Sept 5) urged the United States (US) to "exert real pressure" on Israel to reach a ceasefire agreement in the ongoing Gaza war that started on October 7 last year. The two sides have traded blame over stalling talks for a ceasefire and hostage exchange as Netanyahu faces pressure to seal a deal following the deaths of six Gaza captives. Also read | Gaza war: Israel PM Netanyahu declares ‘no deal in making’ with Hamas, rubbishes media reports A report by the news agency AFP early Friday said that Hamas's Qatar-based lead negotiator Khalil al-Hayya called on the US to "exert real pressure on Netanyahu and his government" and "abandon their blind bias" towards Israel. 'No deal in making' Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that there was no ceasefire deal in the making. Speaking to American media, Prime Minister Netanyahu said, "Unfortunately, it's not close but we will do everything we can to get them to the point where they do make a deal." He insisted that Israel must retain control over the Philadelphi Corridor along the Egypt-Gaza border to prevent weapons smuggling to Hamas. Hamas, meanwhile, was demanding complete Israeli withdrawal from the area and on Thursday said Netanyahu's position "aims to thwart reaching an agreement." 'Warn against falling into trap of Netanyahu...' Hamas also said that a new agreement was unnecessary because it agreed months ago to a truce outlined by Biden. "We warn against falling into the trap of Netanyahu... who uses negotiations to prolong the aggression against our people," the Palestinian militant group said in a statement. AFP reported that at Israeli protests in several cities this week, Netanyahu's critics have blamed him for hostages' deaths, saying he has refused to make necessary concessions for striking a ceasefire deal. Key mediator Qatar has said that Israel's approach was "based on an attempt to falsify facts and mislead world public opinion by repeating lies." (With inputs from agencies)

Gaza war: Hamas urges US to 'exert real pressure' on Israel to reach truce deal

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday (Sep 5) that there was “not a deal in the making” with Palestinian militant group Hamas. Talking with US news broadcaster Fox News, he said, “Unfortunately, it’s not close.” He also dismissed American&nbsp;media reports that earlier claimed that a Gaza peace agreement was 90 per cent completed.

“It’s exactly inaccurate. There’s a story, a narrative out there, that there’s a deal out there,” he said.

Netanyahu blames&nbsp;Hamas for the collapse, saying it was not agreeing to “anything”. “Not to the Philadelphi Corridor, not to the keys of exchanging hostages for jailed terrorists, not to anything. So that’s just a false narrative,” he said.

The clarification from the Jewish leader comes amidst allegations that he obstructed a peace deal with Hamas for political gains.

It’s not me,” the Israeli PM&nbsp;said.

Earlier, Hamas had accused Netanyahu of thwarting the peace agreement by insisting that the Israel Defense Forces&nbsp;(IDF)&nbsp;would not withdraw forces from the Philadelphi corridor.

“We warn against falling into Netanyahu’s trap and tricks, as he uses negotiations to prolong the aggression against our people,” the Hamas statement said. The group also claimed it had accepted a proposal put forward by the United States on July 2.

There’s a story, a narrative out there, that there’s a deal out there,” he said. Netanyahu blames Hamas for the collapse, saying it was not agreeing to “anything”. The ones who butchered in a sling, murdering six people in cold blood, riddling them with bullets and then firing bullets into their heads is Hamas. It’s not Israel. It’s not me,” the Israeli PM said. Earlier, Hamas had accused Netanyahu of thwarting the peace agreement by insisting that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would not withdraw forces from the Philadelphi corridor. “We warn against falling into Netanyahu’s trap and tricks, as he uses negotiations to prolong the aggression against our people,” the Hamas statement said. The group also claimed it had accepted a proposal put forward by the United States on July 2. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday (Sep 3) reacted to the United Kingdom's decision to suspend some arms sales to his country. In a post on social media platform X, Prime Minister Netanyahu said that the UK's decision was shameful. "Instead of standing with Israel, a fellow democracy defending itself against barbarism, Britain’s misguided decision will only embolden Hamas," Netanyahu said. "This shameful decision will not change Israel's determination to defeat Hamas, a genocidal terrorist organization that savagely murdered 1200 people on October 7, including 14 British citizens," he added. UK suspends 30 of its 350 arms export licences to Israel A day earlier, British Foreign Minister David Lammy announced that London would immediately suspend 30 of its 350 arms export licences with Israel because there was a risk that such equipment might be used to commit serious violations of international humanitarian law. Lamy said that his government's decision did not amount to a blanket ban or an arms embargo, but only involved those that could be used in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. "We recognise, of course, Israel's need to defend itself against security threats, but we are deeply worried by the methods that Israel's employed, and by reports of civilian casualties and the destruction of civilian infrastructure, particularly," he told parliament. Also watch | Gaza war: Netanyahu 'pursuing personal interests' amid mounting pressure × "It is with regret that I inform the House (of Commons, lower house of parliament) today the assessment I have received leaves me unable to conclude anything other than that for certain UK arms exports to Israel, there does exist a clear risk that they might be used to commit or facilitate a serious violation of international humanitarian law," he added. 'Suspension won't have material impact on Israel's security' British exports amount to less than 1% of the total arms Israel receives, and Lammy told Parliament on Monday that the suspension would not have a material impact on Israel's security, and Britain continued to support its right to self-defence. He also pointed out that the decision was not a judgment on whether Israel had breached international law or not. Among the items included under the arms export suspension will be components for military aircraft, including fighter jets, helicopters and drones. (With inputs from agencies)
