Sacrifices of our soldiers won't go in vain: PM Modi on India-China standoff

<p>Meanwhile, news agency ANI quoting sources said that four Indian soldiers were in critical condition after the face-off with Chinese troops along the LAC on Monday.</p>

<p>India reported that 20 soldiers were martyred during the clash, even as China's Global Times said there were also casualties on the Chinese side.</p>

<p>Amid reports of India casualties, PTI quoting US intelligence sources said that 35 soldiers had died and were injured on the Chinese side during the clash in Galwan Valley.</p>

<p>Indian and Chinese troops had clashed in the Galwan Valley on June 15/16 in which 20 Indian soldiers were martyred. The clash occurred after weeks of stand-off between the two armies in the upper Himalayas.</p>

<p>India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said China tried to "unilaterally change the status quo and departed from the consensus to respect the Line of Actual Control in the Galwan Valley".</p>

<p>"Both sides suffered casualties that could have been avoided had an agreement at higher level been scrupulously followed by the Chinese side," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.</p>

<p>"Given its responsible approach to border management, India is very clear that all its activities are always within the Indian side of the LAC. We expect the same of the Chinese side," it added.</p>

<p>Many other icons in the Indian cricket like Rohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma and Yuvraj Singh also tweeted to pay tribute to the martyrs.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, an alert has been issued in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts, adjoining Tibet, to take all precautionary measures to ensure security, the state government said on Tuesday.</p>

<p>It said the measures have been taken in the state to collect intelligence to plan the future of course of action. All state intelligence units have also been alerted in this regard, it added.</p>

<p>In the midst of the flare-ups between Indian and Chinese armies, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he was "ready, willing and able to mediate" between the two countries. He reiterated the offer on Thursday as well.<br />
The Ministry of External Affairs indirectly rejected the offer two days ago, but Singh became the first central minister to speak on India's position on the issue with clarity.</p>

<p>"I spoke to the US Defence Secretary yesterday. I told him that we have developed a mechanism already under which any problem between India and China are resolved through military and diplomatic dialogue," Singh said.</p>

<p>"I want to assure the country that we will not allow India's pride to be hurt under any circumstances. India has been following a clear policy of maintaining good relationship with neighbouring countries and it is not a new approach; We have been following it for long. At times, situation arises with China. It has happened before," he said.</p>

<p>Singh noted that China has also said that it wants to resolve the border issue through diplomatic dialogue.</p>

<p>"It has been India's efforts to ensure that the tension does not escalate. It should be resolved through talks at military and diplomatic levels. Negotiations are ongoing between the two countries at the military and diplomatic levels," he said.</p>

<p>Troops of India and China were engaged in the standoff for over three weeks in Pangong Tso, Galwan Valley, Demchok and Daulat Beg Oldie in eastern Ladakh.</p>

<p>The trigger for the face-off was China's stiff opposition to India laying a key road in the Finger area around the Pangong Tso Lake besides construction of another road connecting the Darbuk-Shayok-Daulat Beg Oldie road in Galwan Valley.</p>

<p>Military sources said China was also laying a road in the Finger area which is not acceptable to India.</p>

<p>The sources said military reinforcements including troops, vehicles and artillery guns were sent to eastern Ladakh by the Indian Army to shore up its presence in the areas where Chinese soldiers were resorting to aggressive posturing.</p>

<p>The situation in eastern Ladakh deteriorated after around 250 Chinese and Indian soldiers were engaged in a violent face-off on the evening of May 5 which spilled over to the next day before the two sides agreed to "disengage".<br />
However, the standoff continued.</p>

<p>The incident in Pangong Tso was followed by a similar incident in north Sikkim on May 9.</p>

<p>The troops of India and China were engaged in a 73-day stand-off in Doklam tri-junction in 2017 which even triggered fears of a war between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.</p>

<p>The India-China border dispute covers the 3,488-km-long LAC. China claims Arunachal Pradesh as part of southern Tibet while India contests it.</p>

<p>Both sides have been asserting that pending the final resolution of the boundary issue, it is necessary to maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas.</p>

<p>China, meanwhile, is in no mood for dialogue. In fact, Beijing is blaming India and China's state-run newspaper the Global Times is at it again. It has been publishing aggressive and anti-India commentary. It claims that India has "illegally constructed defence facilities across the border into Chinese territory".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Needless to say, the Global Times is echoing Beijing's line since it is the state mouthpiece.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India and China haven’t fired a bullet at each other in decades but, the situation at the border is precarious. It is being called an escalation of a scale not seen since the 1962 war and that too in the middle of a pandemic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Line of Actual Control(LAC) runs at 15,000 feet above sea level and it is an undefined border. On one end is Kashmir and on the other is Myanmar. The India-China border is close to 3,500 km long. In the past couple of weeks, two places have emerged as border hotspots- Sikkim and the other close to Ladakh.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Right now the focus is the Galwan valley. Chinese troops are said to have moved in the Galwan valley.</p>

<p>India has been ramping up its border infrastructure. Last year, India’s border roads organization built a road called the Darbuk–Shyok-DBO road which is in Indian territory. It is at least 10 kilometers inside the LAC which is also technically Indian territory but China doesn't agree.</p>

<p>The road runs perpendicular to the Galwan river. In order to connect this road to the LAC, India was building feeder roads which worked up China. All of this construction is well within Indian territory.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India is stepping up infrastructure, on its own side of the border, and on its own land. The idea is to help Indian forces reach remote locations quickly. It saves them time and effort and allows them to keep Chinese military aggression under check and that is why China is protesting because its border transgressions are being challenged.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, China has been building its way to glory along the border but has been protesting when India does the same on its side although India needs these border checks because China’s expansionism knows no bounds.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Galwan valley was a flashpoint in the 1962 war. According to a report, China has changed its claims over the valley thrice. It started with a small territory. Now, Beijing says that the entire Galwan valley belongs to China which the &nbsp;Global Times editorial also repeats.&nbsp;</p>

<p>China has reportedly positioned 5,000 PLA troops along the LAC. Many of them are said to be in Indian territory. In the Galwan valley, the PLA is said to have erected around 100 tents in the last two weeks. In fact, an open source intelligence expert has captured some satellite images of the Ngari Gunsa airport, 200 kilometers away from the Pangong lake in Ladakh - the site of the skirmish between the Indian and Chinese forces earlier this month.</p>

<p>There are Chinese fighter jets now positioned on what looks like a runway. India is stepping up its own presence at the border. On Wednesday, Indian Army chief MM Naravane will meet his top commanders as part of the two-day Army commanders conference in which the situation at the border is expected to come up.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So this is where things stand right now, a large number of Chinese troops positioned at the border at multiple locations with assertive and aggressive commentary from China. Beijing seems to be fine with this unprecedented level of tension at the border and it is making territorial claims at a time when the world is trying to control the virus, that came from China.</p>
