The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on Saturday called as "mischievous interpretation" the criticism over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks at an all-party meeting that no one has entered Indian territory or captured any military post while referring to the Galwan Valley clash in eastern Ladakh.

In a statement, the PMO&nbsp;said the focus of Modi's remarks at the meeting on Friday was the events of June 15 at Galwan that led to the loss of lives of 20 Indian military personnel.

"The prime minister's observations that there was no Chinese presence on our side of the LAC (Line of Actual Control) pertained to the situation as a consequence of the bravery of our armed forces," it said.

The Congress as well as a number of strategic affairs experts raised questions over Modi's remarks asking if there was no transgression by the Chinese military in Galwan Valley then where did Indian soldiers die. They also wondered whether Modi gave a clean chit to China over the standoff.

"The sacrifices of the soldiers of the 16 Bihar Regiment foiled the attempt of the Chinese side to erect structures and also cleared the attempted transgression at this point of the LAC on that day," the PMO said.

"The words of the prime minister 'those who tried to transgress our land were taught a befitting lesson by our brave sons of soil', succinctly summed up the ethos and the values of our armed forces," it said.

The PMO said Modi assured that India's armed forces will leave no stone unturned to protect the country's borders.

"Attempts are being made in some quarters to give a mischievous interpretation to remarks by the prime minister at the all-party meeting on Friday," it said.

It also houses the world's highest landing strip - the Daulat Beg Oldi landing strip. The Indian Air Force has successfully landed the C17 Globemaster aircraft here.

In case of a war or conflict, India can now ferry thousands of troops to the region within hours. China's fears intensified when India built a bridge, the Colonel Chewang Rinchen Setu, across the Shyok river. The idea was to facilitate Indian troop movement in the region.

Even before China could digest this, India began constructing another bridge across the Galwan Nullah. This concrete bridge is a part of the feeder road project and it replaces an existing wooden structure, to allow heavy military movement.

It was this bridge that triggered the latest standoff. A nervous China deployed its troops along the LAC to put pressure on India to stop road construction.

The Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldi road, the feeder roads and the landing strip have all cemented India's dominance in the region.

Now, China's biggest fear is India's recovery of Aksai Chin which was captured by China in 1962. The Galwan area was among the biggest flashpoints during the 1962 war too and it has become a flashpoint again.

India has a strategic advantage in the region and its borders are secured. India is stepping up infrastructure, on its own side of the border, and on its own land. The idea is to help Indian forces reach remote locations quickly and that is why China is protesting because its border transgressions are being challenged.

Indian and Chinese troops had clashed in the Galwan Valley on June 15/16 in which 20 Indian soldiers were martyred. The clash occurred after weeks of stand-off between the two armies in the upper Himalayas.

India's Ministry of External Affairs(MEA) said China tried to "unilaterally change the status quo and departed from the consensus to respect the Line of Actual Control in the Galwan Valley".

"Both sides suffered casualties that could have been avoided had an agreement at higher level been scrupulously followed by the Chinese side,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

“Given its responsible approach to border management, India is very clear that all its activities are always within the Indian side of the LAC. We expect the same of the Chinese side,” it added.
