India's President Droupadi Murmu, on the eve of the nation's 75th Republic Day, approved 80 gallantry awards including 12 posthumous ones.

These consist of six Kirti Chakras, including three posthumous; 16 Shaurya Chakras, including two posthumous; 53 Sena Medals, including seven posthumous; one Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry); and four Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry).

The Kirti Chakra is considered as India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award after Ashok Chakra, whereas, Shaurya Chakra is the country's third-highest peacetime gallantry award.

She also approved 311 defence decorations to military and other personnel.

The ones awarded with Kirti Chakra, according to the defence ministry, are:

- Major Digvijay Singh Rawat of the 21st Battalion, the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) 
- Major Deependra Vikram Basnet from the Sikh Regiment's fourth battalion&nbsp; 
- Havildar Pawan Kumar Yadav from the 21st battalion of the Mahar Regiment

The announcement was made ahead of India's 76th Independence Day. Axel is amongst the list of 42 ‘Mention-in-Despatches’ that recognises distinguished and meritorious service. Mention-in-Despatches lies above other appreciation awards such as the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card and Vice Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card that the canines usually receive. Thus, it will be the highest bravery award that an army dog has received in recent times for their involvement in a counter-insurgency operation. The two-year-old German Shephard Army dog was serving in the 26 Army Dog Unit when he sacrificed himself in the line of duty. Reportedly, Axel had joined the unit in December last year only. After Axel's canine compatriot Bajaj cleared and sanitised the building for entry, Axel was deployed on the spot to search for the terrorists. Axel managed to clear the first room diligently but as soon as he entered the second, a coward terrorist fired indiscriminately at him. According to the official Army version, Axel made some movements for 15 seconds after being drilled with the bullets before falling down. After the gunfight was over, army forces retrieved the canine's body. Reports claimed that Axel suffered multiple wounds along with a fracture of the femur. Apart from Axel, his canine buddy Bajaj has also been conferred the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) commendation. Among the 189 gallantry awards, 134 personnel are being awarded for their gallant action in the Jammu and Kashmir region, 47 for their bravery in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas and one personnel for similar conduct in the north-east region, a home ministry spokesperson said.

The highest number of bravery medals, 115, have been awarded to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, followed by 30 to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), 10 to the Chhattisgarh Police, nine to the Odisha Police, seven to the Maharashtra Police, three each to the border guarding forces of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and two to the Border Security Force (BSF), among others.

Eighty-eight personnel have been awarded the distinguished service medal while 662 have been given the meritorious service medal.

42 fire service medals, 37 correctional service medals for police personnel and 51 'Jeevan Rakshak Padak' were also announced.

The 'Jeevan Rakshak' series of medals are given for the meritorious act of human nature in saving the life of a person.&nbsp;

Republic Day 2022: Government declares names of gallantry award winners

Over twenty members of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) are being rewarded with gallantry awards for their bravery during the conflict between the militaries in eastern Ladakh last year. These guards were posted&nbsp;along the India-China LAC.

These bravery medals are part of the 1,380 service medals announced by the Union government on the eve of Independence Day, all awarded to members of various central and state police forces.

The latest awards list includes two President's Police Medals for Gallantry (PPMG), 628 Police Medals for Gallantry (PMG), 88 President's Police Medals for distinguished service, and 662 Police Medals for Meritorious Service.

Sub Inspector Amar Deep of the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) and late Head Constable Kale Sunil Dattatraya of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) are the only two recipients of the President's Police Medal for Gallantry.

Among the highest number of gallantry medals earned, 257 (1 PPMG and 256 PMG) go to the J&amp;K Police, followed by 151 (1 PPMG and 150 PMG) by the Central Reserve Police Force, according to an official home ministry list.

From the 23 gallantry medals awarded to the ITBP, twenty were earned for operations during the May-June 2020 clashes with the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) in Ladakh, where the central paramilitary guards the 3,488-km-long icy Line of Actual Control (LAC) shoulder-to-shoulder with the Army.

A force statement said eight personnel received the PMG for their heroic acts, meticulous planning, and tactical insight in defending the motherland in Galwan Nalla on June 15.

Six personnel were decorated with the PMG in recognition of their gallantry during hostilities near Hot Springs in Ladakh on May 18. The remaining six received the PMG for&nbsp;gallant action during a violent face-off&nbsp;near Finger IV on the same day.

Three ITBP personnel have been awarded the PMG for their work in anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh.
