Chinese President Xi Jinping warned Monday the world faces "a new period of major changes" as G20 leaders met in Brazil two months before US president-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House.

US President Joe Biden was attending his last summit of the world's leading economies, but as a lame duck eclipsed by Xi, who has cast himself as a protector of the international order in the Trump 2.0 era.

World leaders are meeting for two days to try to jumpstart stalled UN climate talks and overcome their differences on wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, and extracting more tax from the super-rich.

In a nod to the return of China hawk Trump, Xi told British Prime Minister Keir Starmer that the world was "entering a new period of major changes."

As leaders lined up to meet the most powerful man in Rio, Xi added that Britain and China would "shoulder the important task of... responding to global challenges."

At the opening of the summit, he launched the centerpiece of his G20 presidency: a Global Alliance against Poverty and Hunger, backed by 81 countries, which aims to feed half a million people by 2030.

Before the summit, the 79-year-old host, who is attempting to chart a non-aligned course in international affairs, said he would try steer discussions away from the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

"Because if not, we will not discuss other things which are more important for people that are not at war," he said.

But Biden's decision on the eve of the summit to allow Ukraine to use long-range US missiles to strike inside Russia threatens to escalate a war Trump has vowed to quickly end.

Biden sought to rally support for Kyiv, urging G20 leaders to support Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He also called on them to "increase pressure" on Hamas for a ceasefire in Israel's war with the Gaza militants.

A Brazilian foreign ministry source told AFP that some countries wanted to renegotiate the wording of a draft final statement for the summit.

"For Brazil and other countries the text is already finalized, but some countries want to open up some points on wars and climate," the source told AFP.

G20 leaders are under pressure to try rescue UN climate talks in Azerbaijan, which have stalled on the issue of greater climate finance for developing countries.

The get-together caps a farewell diplomatic tour by Biden which took him to Lima for a meeting of Asia-Pacific trading partners, and then to the Amazon in the first such visit for a sitting US president.

Kenneth da Nóbrega: Three priorities. First, fighting hunger and poverty. Second, fighting climate change. Third, making progress in terms of promoting the reform of global institutions of multilateral governance. These are the three priorities of the Brazilian presidency.

WION: Speaking of challenges in&nbsp;dealing with hunger, can you give details about the alliance which is being launched

Kenneth da Nóbrega: As a matter of fact, we can already speak of results achieved by the Brazilian presidency. Of course, we're still to agree on the joint statement. The presidency will end on December 1. But in July, a task force was launched to fight hunger and poverty. Basically, this task force is a platform where you can find good examples of programs to alleviate hunger and poverty, you can find also cooperation, offers of cooperation in order to adapt those successful programmes to other countries, other developing countries. And third, you have a finance pillar in terms, of course, if you visit the platform as a developing country, and you select a programme which has been implemented, let's say, in India or in Brazil, and then you talk with a specialist in terms of adapting this programme to your country. And then you want some financing. So, the platform offers these three pillars. The Climate Change Task Force is mobilisation against climate change. It has two pillars. One is the reset action pillar, other is the reset financing pillar. The reset action pillar is a locus where you can find expertise to devise national plans to fight climate change, structured plans, not just programmes. And of course, the resetting finance pillar is to develop new financial mechanisms to help developing countries to fight climate change.

Kenneth da Nóbrega: Okay, if I focus on the negotiation of the joint statement that India so successfully negotiated last year, the fact that you could manage to reach consensus in those paragraphs which are about geopolitical scenarios. Of course, geopolitical hotspots of the world, the fact that you achieved that, paved the way for Brazil to negotiate successfully. The call for action for the reform of global governance, and governance institutions, and the fact that you managed, managed to pull off this agreement on geopolitical issues in your joint statement was key for us to build &amp; to achieve, also some progress in this area.

WION: How do you view India, Brazil, and South Africa as developing nations, leading the G20 through the Troika?

Kenneth da Nóbrega: Yes, I think that continuity is a keyword. I think that the Brazilian presidency, to a considerable extent, is a continuity of your G20 presidency, in the sense of giving more legitimacy to the G20. A key result in that area was the accession of the African Union to the G20. Another key aspect of continuity is making sure that the interests and the priorities of the global south countries remain on the agenda of the G20, of course, alongside the priorities of the developed world. The third aspect of continuity is the fact that India has demonstrated a tireless disposition to build consensus. As I mentioned, when responding to your previous question, the way India managed to reach a consensus regarding these paragraphs on geopolitics.

WION: How much has the Russia-Ukraine war been a challenge to form the consensus?

Kenneth da Nóbrega: Of course, the geopolitical scenario is quite complex. I think that India also faced a very complex geopolitical scenario. The scenario has evolved throughout this year. It's a very dynamic scenario on the ground, but I trust that the countries also value the fact that the G20 is a unique coordination group that brings together developing &amp; developed countries, countries which are now facing tensions at different sides of the table when it comes to geopolitics. I think that this idea, which I think India has contributed to, is that there must be a place where countries sit around the table and agree on how to discuss these burning questions.

WION: What is the current state of the joint statement?

Kenneth da Nóbrega: Well, the negotiating process, of course, is conducted behind closed doors. So, we can just guess how the dynamics are evolving behind closed doors. I have just read in the newspaper that some progress has been made. So, I hope, I hope that this is a very good sign that we reach a consensus on a good joint, joint statement, not only a joint statement but a joint statement with content. Of course, the geopolitical scenario is complex, but this is the reality, our reality.

Brazil urges G20 to enforce global tax on super-rich in battle against tax evasion

Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said on Thursday (Feb 22) that foreign ministers of G20 countries were nearly unanimous in supporting a two-state solution to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Vieira was speaking at the end of the two-day meeting of the foreign ministers.

Rafah is a city in southern Gaza where people from the northern part of the Palestinian enclave were coming in order to escape fighting in the north. But now, Israel has launched strikes on Rafah, drawing condemnation from the global community.

India's External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar repeated New Delhi's case for reforms in the United Nations by citing the example of African Union's inclusion in G20 during India's presidency of the grouping of the world's wealthiest economies last year.&nbsp;

Addressing the event, Jaishankar said, "Around five months ago, we had the G20 Summit. It's been two months since India relinquished its presidency. So, it's a natural thought for many us who were involved with the G20 to reflect on how it proceeds, how it is perceived, how it is remembered, and how it is analysed."

The External Affairs Minister described New Delhi G20 Leaders' Summit as an opportunity for a number of countries who had an affinity for common interests and stakes but were not included in the global decision-making process.

"There's not a single African President, Prime Minister or Foreign Minister who has not thanked us for what is seen truly as a big step in Africa's rise, a recognition today that Africa should have a voice. In fact, in a very interesting way, it has also spurred a debate on not just multilateralism but even on UN reform. I mean, the feeling is that if a body like the G20 could add a member, surely this should serve as an inspiration for other bodies, not least the United Nations," Jaishankar said.

Jaishankar said that&nbsp;Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured the then African Union President Macky Sall during Bali G2) Summit in 2022 that India would ensure African Union's inclusion as a permanent G20 member during its presidency.

New Delhi has officially announced that the country's external affairs minister S Jaishankar will fly to Russia on a key diplomatic visit beginning on Christmas day that is on December 25th. Speaking at the COP28 Summit in Dubai, the prime minister said that the emissions of India are very low in comparison to other countries with less population.

The Conference of Parties (COP) is a decision-making platform which carries out the review of the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). 
 
"India's population is 17 per cent of the global population, but in global carbon emissions India is only at 4 per cent. We are moving fast in achieving the NDC targets. In fact, we reached our non-fossil fuel targets nine years before the deadline," PM Modi said.

He was referring to the climate action plan called the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which is aimed at cutting emissions and adapting to climate impacts.

Addressing world leaders, PM Modi said that India has set the target to cut down emissions intensity by nearly 45 per cent by 2030. 
 
"We have decided to increase the share of non-fossil fuel to 50 per cent. We will also keep going ahead towards our goal of net zero by 2070," he said. 
 
The prime minister announced a unique programme, which was introduced by the Indian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, from the COP28 stage.

Why was the second summit convened and whether it produced noticeable outcomes need a critical examination.&nbsp;

<h2>Backdrop&nbsp;</h2>

For G20, the world’s premier economic forum, an annual summit of the leaders is the general norm. It was followed scrupulously from 2011 to 2019. But when in 2008 G20 was elevated from finance ministers and central bank governors to the highest political level to tackle the global financial crisis, five summits were held within a short span of two years (November 2008–November 2010). In a similar vein, the outbreak of the Covid crisis and dramatic developments in Afghanistan compelled Saudi Arabia and Italy respectively to host two summits in a year during their presidencies.&nbsp;

Following this precedent but without riding on the back of a crisis, India decided, before the Israel-Hamas war began, to host the second summit. Apparently, this decision was designed to ensure that the Indian presidency from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023 ran for a full 12 months and did not end with the first summit i.e., about seven weeks in advance.&nbsp;

At the September summit, participants had advanced useful proposals even as the negotiations for the New Delhi Declaration concluded separately. The virtual summit aimed to achieve several purposes: review developments since the first summit&nbsp;including the results of the second ‘Voice of the Global South Summit’; “take forward” key outcomes and action points from the Delhi summit; and “push for effective implementation” of various decisions announced at New Delhi, according to the G20 secretariat. In hindsight, the conflict in West Asia, which broke out on 7 October, provided an additional justification. The final motivation may have been to bridge the transfer of the presidency from India to Brazil and reflect on how the G20 agenda may be shaped under a new president during 2023–24.&nbsp;

<h2>Virtual summit highlights&nbsp;</h2>

Initially, there was some uncertainty about participation in the virtual summit, but it turned out to be a well-attended meeting. Of the total members and guests, 23 countries were represented at the Heads of Government level. US President Joe Biden was absent, Russian President Vladimir Putin was present, and China was represented by its Premier. Besides, all heads of international organisations participated. While the virtual summit was not expected to issue a joint communiqué or the chair’s summary, enough information was made available to the public enabling it to form a clear view of what happened at the conference.&nbsp;

Amitabh Kant, India's G20 Sherpa, pointed out that G20 works in continuity and that India's focus since the September summit has been on the implementation of decisions. Some of them have been implemented such as the admission of the African Union (AU) as a member of G20. New Delhi has been pushing many other issues for early implementation. He mentioned that holding four global meetings – two G20 summits and two Global South summits – in a single year demonstrated “the convening power of India” and the PM’s leadership.&nbsp;

In his opening remarks at the virtual summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that India succeeded in making G20 “inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented and decisive.” &nbsp;He highlighted the significance of the adoption of the human-centric approach while supporting innovation and digital technology, renewal of faith in multilateralism, and AU as a new member of G20. “It is a matter of pride that Africa got a voice under India's presidency,” he observed. He spoke about the Israel-Hamas war, welcoming the agreement on the release of hostages and expressing hope that the conflict would not become a regional one. Given the major differences within G20 over this vexed question, it was, of course, not feasible to craft a common view, in contrast to the forum’s success in developing consensus on the Ukraine issue.&nbsp;

Following the virtual summit, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated that India's G20 presidency was Global South-centric. It succeeded in putting focus on development issues. He also pointed out that many world leaders spoke on the West Asian turmoil and the need to extend humanitarian assistance to the needy and to find a long-term solution.&nbsp;

Since the final meeting of G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors took place after the September summit, Nirmala Sitharaman, speaking at the post-virtual summit press conference, observed that India's endeavours to push for the reform of Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) found support from G20 members. “There is significant momentum on this agenda now,” she stressed. The US and Germany are inclined to provide more resources to MDBs so that the latter could help developing countries address the challenges of development and climate change. Besides, the framework to regulate crypto assets is ready, and G20 countries are now expected to implement it. Not restricted to G20, this framework will extend to nearly 100 member nations of the Financial Stability Board (FSB).&nbsp;

The Indian finance minister reported progress in implementing India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) initiative. MoUs for cooperation have been signed with eight countries: Singapore, UAE, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Sierra Leone, Suriname, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania, and Trinidad and Tobago. Surprisingly, there are no takers from South Asia yet. However, negotiations are underway with other countries. More significantly, the PM announced the setting up of a Social Impact Fund with an initial contribution of $25 million by India and urged G20 countries to participate in this project.&nbsp;

Another major decision related to the need for cooperation on “global regulation” of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The PM announced India's plan to host the Global AI Partnership Summit in December 2023, urging all G20 members to participate.&nbsp;

<h2>What next?&nbsp;</h2>

India's G20 presidency has been widely lauded for good reasons.&nbsp;

But it is now time, especially for those seriously interested in tracking the evolution of G20, to shift attention to Brazil as the president from 1 December 2023. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will preside over the Rio de Janeiro summit on 18–19 November 2024. Its theme is already set – ‘Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.’ Lula has said that he would follow up on India's achievements. The three key priorities he has selected for the Brazilian presidency are: i) social inclusion and the fight against hunger, ii) the energy transition and sustainable development (including its economic, social and environmental dimensions) and iii) the reform of global governance institutions. It is to be hoped that in pursuing these priorities, Brazil will also keep a sharp eye on progress in the implementation of the New Delhi decisions.&nbsp;

In this context, the role of the Troika for the next presidency, comprising India, Brazil and South Africa, becomes quite important. It has the responsibility to ensure continuity while leaving adequate room for the president to effect change and innovation in the G20 agenda. India has established a creative template for future presidencies. Since these three countries form the IBSA Forum, they are in a sound position to ensure optimal coordination through mutual accommodation and solidarity. Realpolitik may hamper this task a little.&nbsp; 
Hence keeping close communication at the leadership level may be essential.&nbsp;

As John Kirton, Director G20 Research Group at the University of Toronto, pointed out aptly, G20 has secured “great successes” in the past but “greater challenges” await it in the future.&nbsp;

<h2>Modi welcomes Israel-Hamas truce &nbsp;</h2>

PM Modi also "welcomed" the Israel-Hamas truce which took place on Wednesday (Nov 22) under which the Islamist militant group agreed to release 50 Israelis held captive in exchange for 150 Palestinians in the first phase. In the same vein, the Indian PM condemned the civilian deaths that are taking place because of the war.&nbsp;

“The death of civilians, be it anywhere in the world, is condemnable. Today, we welcome the news of hostages being released and I hope that all remaining hostages are also released as early as possible. The urgent facilitation of humanitarian aid is very important. It is also very crucial to ensure that the war between Israel and Hamas does not escalate into a regional issue,”&nbsp;PM Modi said while speaking about the war in West Asia.

According to Mohammed Soliman, director at the Middle East Institute and the strategist behind India-Israel-US-UAE partnership (I2U2), there are more agency for the countries involved in terms of drifts aligning with their own interests in India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor compared to the BRI, and this is what makes it more feasible, added Soliman.&nbsp;

"Although the neighborhood is plagued by geopolitical rivalries, there seems to be a shift towards de-escalation and finding common ground after a decade of upheavals," Soliman said.&nbsp;

<h2>India-Middle East-European Union economic corridor: Immediate timeline</h2>

So far no binding financial commitments have been made.&nbsp;

But previously, the European Union had separately earmarked the spending of up to €300bn on overseas infrastructure investments between 2021 and 2027 from its Global Gateway project, launched to take on China's Belt and Road Initiative and defend European interests across the wider region.

"It will be the most direct connection to date between India, the Arabian Gulf and Europe," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in New Delhi while sitting beside Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the US President Joe Biden at the launch of partnership for Global Infrastructure &nbsp;and Investment (PGII) and India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.

In the next 60 days, working groups will put together a fuller plan and set timelines.&nbsp;

The first phase will involve identifying the areas that need investment and where physical infrastructure can be connected between countries.&nbsp;

G20 Delhi summit: Why India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor is a 'real big deal'

In the midst of strained diplomatic ties between India and Canada, New Delhi is set to raise concerns with the Canadian speaker of the Senate during the Parliament-20 meeting of the G20 nations' presiding officers, which is scheduled to take place next week in the national capital, said Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday (Oct 6).

The presiding officers of 25 countries and 10 deputy speakers from the G20 member nations and invitee countries are expected to take part in the P20 Summit which will be held at the India International Convention and Expo Centre, Yashobhoomi, at Dwarka on Oct 13 and 14.

The G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit (P20) will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Oct 13.

Canada will be represented by Speaker of the Senate Raymonde Gagne at the P20 Summit.&nbsp;

"We will discuss issues that have been listed for the summit. Other issues will be discussed informally," Birla said on being asked whether the matter of using the Canadian Parliament to level allegations against India will be raised with the Canadian presiding officer.

<h2>India-Canada row</h2>

A diplomatic standoff erupted between India and Canada after PM Trudeau suggested in his address to the House of Commons that India might be linked to the death of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. Ottawa also expelled a senior Indian diplomat even as the investigation continues.

However, India has strongly rejected these claims, while reiterating its adherence to the rule of law. New Delhi has also called on Ottawa to check the rampant anti-India activities on Canadian soil and respect the territorial integrity of India.

Renowned British economist Jim O'Neill, known for coining the BRIC acronym, has commended India's hosting of the G20 summit, calling it a substantial diplomatic victory for India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking to WIONs diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, O'Neill, who currently serves as a senior adviser at Chatham House reflected on the unique ability of New Delhi to foster strong relations with both Western powers and emerging economies. However, he also expressed disappointment over the expansion of BRICS and the recent Canada-India tug-of-war that threatens to undo the good work of the G20 Summit. Sidhant Sibal: What do you think about the BRICS grouping? Jim O'Neill: I think we have to think about differently in terms of the economics, the geopolitics. Obviously, when I created the acronym, which is now just over 22 years ago, it was completely based on economic ideas. Although I did suggest because of it, each of the four big BRIC countries Brazil, Russia, India, and China should become part of what I then described as an expanded G7- at the same time as the Euro members, Germany, France and Italy consolidating to just one. So it would effectively be something like a G8 to G9. But the main thing that I was focused on was the rising share of global GDP that each of the four BRIC countries would likely achieve in the coming decades. And of course, China, in particular, in a similar way, although not on the same scale. China and India have become much bigger, although Brazil and Russia have been especially since the start of the second decade of the acronym very disappointing, so much so that their weight in global GDP is actually back to where it was in 2001. And South Africa, whilst it's a very interesting country geopolitically, of course, very interesting with Africa, economically, it's not a particularly important country. It's not even the biggest country in the continent of Africa. Sidhant Sibal: How do you see the expansion of the BRICS grouping? Jim O'Neill: I am disappointed by it, for a number of reasons, but there are three basic ones. First of all, since they became a political grouping in 2009-10, the BRICS leaders have not really achieved anything. Partly because of their own differences, which perhaps we'll discuss more is particularly true of course, between India and China, but they don't seem to have gotten beyond this very powerful symbolism as being a group that doesn't involve the US and is constantly bemoaning their lack of representation in global governance. The second reason is there was no objective guidance as to why, for example, in Africa, Ethiopia and Egypt became members and a country that is much more important, strategically, economically, and demographically, Nigeria was not and why, in Latin America, not Mexico, but Argentina, and it seems like a very ramshackle group of cultures that were chosen rather than any real strategic obvious ways. And then the third reason is simple one is that if you expand any group of countries, as you see with G20, the more you add, the harder it becomes. So I'm not quite sure other than there's really big symbolism, quite what the expanded BRICS is supposed to be trying to achieve. Sidhant Sibal: How do you see India and China's worsening ties impacting BRICS dynamics? Jim O'Neill: I think it itself undermines anything the BRICS countries may try and achieve. And in fact, as I wrote something last week, about the G-20 meeting that was successfully hosted by Modi. I think it was a major diplomatic mistake of President Xi to not personally attend the G20. It was only two weeks after the BRICS meeting, he appeared to as did the Chinese media making huge amounts of propaganda about how important it was that he didn't even have the courtesy of turning up to a G20 meeting hosted by a fellow BRICS country, and they obviously suggest that the relationship between China and India is not good. So how can the BRICS group achieve anything when its two most important members don't really seem to agree on virtually anything of mutual importance? Other than this symbolism, they both independently like to claim that the leader of the Global South. Watch | From G20 to Italy leaving BRI: Are nations abandoning China? × Sidhant Sibal: How do you see the outcomes of the G20 summit, the joint statement...diplomatically a win.. Jim O'Neill: Well, it was, but of course, the disputes with Canada are threatening to overshadow what appeared to be quite a very successful, diplomatic success for Modi. In the background of the G20, and because of Russia, but also because of the growing and worrying disputes between the US and China, many people myself included, were worried that the G20 would struggle to function. In fact, there were some fears that would not even be a communique at this G20. But not only was there a very long communique, but also, of course, it was a very, very interesting decision to add the African Union to make it effectively a G21. And I think there was obviously some very clever diplomacy going on between senior G20 Sherpas in Washington and New Delhi, which made all of that possible. And in my opinion, I really welcome that because I do believe the G20 is the right forum to deal with truly, truly global issues of today because especially now with the African Union in there, you have over 85 per cent of global GDP and vast amounts of the world's population represented whereas in the expanded BRICS, or the G7 you don't have either. Sidhant Sibal: Personally for PM Modi how big the diplomatic victory was? Jim O'Neill: Well, I think it was a huge diplomatic victory, and it tended to suggest that Modi treats the G20 more seriously than he treats the BRICS group. But it also suggests that India has this very, very clever ability to navigate good relationships with the West, as well as good relationships with the so-called emerging world, and manage to navigate the very difficult global geopolitical situation between the US and China. I must say if it would not have been for the dispute with Canada, which does threaten to overshadow all of this, it would have been a great successful moment. Sidhant Sibal: How do you see India being the voice of the global south, and this at a time when China is also trying to achieve that? Jim O'Neill: I mean, I think it's impossible for China to disappear as a voice on anything. China over the past 25 years, has been the single biggest contributor to global GDP growth, more than the United States. And there are not any particular markets in the world whether it be commodities or tourism, or anything that the Chinese don't have a major impact on. And that's true about global diplomacy and of course, China's own voice ever sings itself, the leader of the Global South. I think we will continue with this slightly strange, almost competitive situation where each of China and India regards themselves as the leader of the Global South, which frankly, will become more and more interesting. India’s choices at the BRICS summit As each of these countries becomes bigger and of course, because of each of their dynamics, it is probably the case that over the next decade, India will grow by more than China. And India by the end of this decade will probably become at least as big if not bigger than Germany and get close to being the third-largest economy ahead of Japan. This means India's stance on many of these issues, including being the voice of the Global South, will become more and more credible. But China's not going away anywhere soon. Sidhant Sibal: How do you see India diplomatically weighing as its economic size grows? Jim O'Neill: I mean, I think if you look through long history, and I'm not a particular expert on these issues but casual observation suggests that countries that get bigger, become more and more important in global affairs, including diplomacy. So we already see it and in fact, probably the whole reason why the United States was very eager to support Modi in having a successful G20 is the recognition of India's growing importance already. India in the past two years has become bigger than France and the UK has to be the fifth largest economy in the world. And as it gets to be the third largest, it is going to become more important, in all of these issues around the world. Sidhant Sibal: You mention Canada, how do you see India-Canada ties faring.. Jim O'Neill: I'm very reluctant to comment on that because it's not something I am particularly an expert on or have inside knowledge or expertise. But obviously, it looks like the Canadians feel very, very upset by it and I was just reading something this morning about how they've shared their intelligence with with Western allies. So we will have to see how this dispute develops. And it might well be a bit of a challenge as to how Mr Modi presents his own position on this issue because obviously, along with becoming a bigger voice also means you have to take greater accountability and responsibility for your position on what many many countries regard as the right principles as you go forward. So it's something that Mr Modi and his advisors are going to have to think about very carefully. Sidhant Sibal: Which is the group, you will be willing to place your money on.. Jim O'Neill: Easy for me, the G20. Even though all of these different bodies have great difficulties being fruitful in this complex modern world. I think the G7 nor the BRICS are in the slightest bit capable of being globally influential. I think the G20, because effectively, it is an amalgamation of the BRICS as it was before it expanded on the G7 is a very, very sensible grouping, which is of sufficiently small numbers, compared to the UN, where it can really deal with big global issues, whether they be economic growth, economic fairness, global climate change, infectious disease prevention and so on. And I think we saw some of that in the New Delhi statements. It's very much a relief after a few years where the G20 became almost dysfunctional that it seems to be back on some kind of track. And in fact, if the G20 can carry on that position, then it might in itself, be able to help the UN become a little more, a bit more functional than it seems to be but the UN is a very, very complex organization in trying to get things done that it represents. Sidhant Sibal: Any more acronyms you working on? Jim O'Neill: I just like to say that there were only two acronyms that were truly created. One was the BRIC and the other was the N11 or the next 11. What you read about other acronyms I suppose they created were effectively created on the back of just articles I wrote and somebody somewhere in the global media created that acronym and claimed it was me. So that was a phase of three or four years of slightly acronym madness, and I joked to a couple of people I know well, in the international diplomatic circles that after this BRICS expansion, perhaps the reason if there was a logic as to why they chose the countries is it was impossible to create an acronym in English out of them. But I won't be rushing to create anymore because I think the BRICS world lives on. And if they are going to expand in the future, it probably will come from members of the next 11 largest emerging nations like Indonesia. Maybe Mexico maybe Turkey...who knows WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

G20 summit a "huge diplomatic victory" for India and PM Modi, says Jim O'Neill

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday (September 22), interacted with 'Team G20' at Bharat Mandapam and while addressing the gathering, said that the credit for the success of the summit goes to all the officials involved.

"We got appreciation from everywhere and it is because of the hard work of all the functionaries," PM Modi said.

He then urged the officials who contributed to G20's success to record their experiences on a website.

"I have a request to make that if you all can record your experiences, this will serve as guidelines for future events," he said.

India’s theme for the G20 Presidency was ‘One Earth One Family One Future’.

The New Delhi Declaration was adopted by G20 leaders on September 9, the first day of the summit.
