French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Algeria looks like a bid to mend broken ties with the country which was once under the French colonial rule. The visit has not gone down well with the Algerians.

French President Macron booed in Algeria, faces public anger during a walkabout

Turkiye on Saturday expressed its displeasure over French President Emmanuel Macron's comments in Algeria. Macron told reporters in Algeria that Turkiye, China and Russia portrayed France as the enemy. Turkiye foreign ministry said that this comment was unacceptable.

"There is immense manipulation," Macron told reporters in Algeria.

"Many political Islam activists have an enemy: France. Many of the networks that are covertly pushed -- ... by Turkey... by Russia... by China -- have an enemy: France."

Turkish foreign ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgic slammed what he described as the French leader's "extremely unfortunate" comments.

"It is unacceptable that... Macron, who has difficulties in confronting his colonial past in Africa, especially Algeria, tries to get rid of his colonial past by accusing other countries, including our country," he said in a statement.

"We hope that France will reach the maturity to face its colonial past without blaming other countries, including our country, as soon as possible."

Macron's three-day visit to Algeria this week has aimed to turn the page on months of tensions with the North African country, which earlier this year marked six decades of independence following 132 years of French rule.

France's efforts for a thaw in relations also come at a point when the European powers are scrambling to replace Russian energy imports after the invasion of Ukraine -- including with supplies from Algeria, Africa's top gas exporter.

Turkiye hits back at Macron for his 'unacceptable' comments

In the well-known Bordeaux vineyards, France’s most renowned wine region, something is unusual. The harvest, which normally begins in mid-September, began in mid-August this year due to the heatwave amid extreme climate change and drought. The owners of vineries said that the grapes are of good quality, but the yield has gone down that would impact the wine industry, facing the consequences of climate change.

Despite lesser yields, the season of extreme heatwaves and wildfires produced excellent, juicy, and big grapes. However, getting such crops required innovative growth methods, such as trimming vines differently and occasionally watering them in locations where irrigation is often prohibited.

Additionally, producers all throughout Europe are very concerned regarding what lies ahead, AP reported. Fabien Teitgen, a producer, said, "Global warming is very positive. We have better ripeness, better balance. ...But if you turn to the future, and if you increase the temperature by one degree more, plus, you will lose the freshness part in the balance of the wine."

French vintners are concerned that more frost may interrupt the growing season as early buds are produced by warmer winters. A year’s worth of labour can be destroyed in a violent hailstorm in a few minutes.

Numerous employees kneel in the yards to hand-pick grapes as the harvest progresses. The process of making wine begins as soon as the fruit is crushed to make juice, which is then poured into tanks and barrels. The harvest is intended to generate the renowned Pessac-Leognan wine.

The wine industry has evolved a lot as a result of drought. Vintners used to shape wines to allow grapes to receive the most sunlight possible so that more sugar could be turned into alcohol.

Another producer, Eric Perrin, said that the 2022 harvest has been the best yet because the grapes are strong and balanced. Additionally, the hot, dry weather-protected wines from getting diseases like mildew. He, however, showed his concern for smaller harvesters, as he thinks they might not be able to adapt to the changes.

Scientists have long held the view that the increased frequency of extreme weather is a result of human-caused climate change. As a series of heat waves and lack of rain affected most of Europe, huge pine trees were completely destroyed by flames in the Bordeaux region of southwestern France.

Amid energy crisis in Europe, France-Algeria declare 'new era' of co-operation

The Russia-Ukraine war has affected the entire continent of Europe. The oil and gas prices have shot up considerably, forcing countries to employ measures to cut back on their usage.

The Russia-Ukraine war has affected the entire continent of Europe. The oil and gas prices have shot up considerably, forcing countries to employ measures to cut back on their usage. Joining the list is France which has cautioned of a price increase but simultaneously assured that it will be kept in check. Reportedly, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire on Saturday, soothing the jangling nerves of French citizens remarked that the hike in electricity prices will be limited. "Increases that the President and Prime Minister have spoken about will be limited increases. The four per cent cap will be maintained to the end of the year." said Bruno Le Maire. The minister further added, "There will be no catch-up of costs on the ceiling in 2023," As reported by WION, earlier this week, President Emmanuel Macron added to the woes of the public by stating that it was the 'end of abundance' for the country. Read more: Living through a tipping point or great upheaval, says French President Macron "I believe that we are in the process of living through a tipping point or great upheaval. Firstly because we are living through... what could seem like the end of abundance," Terming the current situation as a battle that needed to be fought, Macron added, “Freedom has a cost. The battles we have to fight will only be won through our efforts.” It is pertinent to note that gas prices in France have been currently capped by the government at 4 per cent up until the end of the year. Moreover, the government is expected to refine the process of businesses gaining access to the three billion euro fund, set up for those unable to meet energy bills. Other European nations are not as lucky While the French government is assuring its citizens that price rises will be regulated, other countries and their citizens do not have the same reliability at their end. As reported by WION, in the United Kingdom, an average UK household is expected to shell out as much as $5,000, come the winters. Meanwhile, UK natural gas prices have risen nearly 96 per cent in the year to July, while electricity prices are up 54 per cent. French President Emmanuel Macron will visit former colony Algeria next week in a bid to improve strained ties between Paris and Algiers, the French presidency said Saturday.

French-Algerian ties hit a low late last year after Macron reportedly questioned whether Algeria had existed as a nation before the French invasion and accused its "political-military system" of rewriting history and fomenting "hatred towards France".

Algeria withdrew its ambassador in response, but the two sides appear to have mended ties since.

"This trip will contribute to deepening the bilateral relationship looking to the future... to reinforce Franco-Algerian cooperation in the face of regional challenges and to continue the work of addressing the past," the presidency said in a statement after a call between Macron and his opposite number Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Macron is to visit Algeria from Thursday to Saturday next week.

The North African country won its independence from France following a gruelling eight-year war, which ended with the signing in March 1962 of the Evian Accords.

On July 5 of the same year, days after 99.72 per cent voted for independence in a referendum, Algeria finally broke free from colonial rule -- but memories of the 132-year occupation continue to haunt its ties with France.

Second trip

Algeria's war of independence left hundreds of thousands dead.

French historians say half a million civilians and combatants died -- 400,000 of them Algerian -- while the Algerian authorities insist 1.5 million were killed.

But six decades on, despite a string of gestures by Macron, France has ruled out any form of apology for the colonial period.

The French presidency announced Macron's visit as Algeria reels from devastating wildfires.

Fires in northeastern Algeria -- now largely extinguished -- have killed 38 people, and ravaged more than 10 percent of a UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve.

But firefighters were still battling blazes in the far west on Saturday, the Algerian civil defence said.

Macron offered France's land and air firefighting services to help, the presidency said.

This week's trip will be the French president's second to Algeria as head of state, after a brief one in December 2017 at the start of his first term when Abdelaziz Bouteflika was still president.

This visit is set to be longer, and take him to both the capital Algiers and second city Oran.

Tebboune, Bouteflika's former premier, won presidential elections in 2019, after mass protests forced his ageing predecessor to resign.

Earlier this year, he congratulated Macron on his re-election and invited him to come to Algeria.

An area equivalent to the size of one-fifth of Belgium has been destroyed by fires throughout Europe after a series of scorching heatwaves and a record-breaking drought, which might push the entire continent towards a record-breaking year for wildfire destruction, experts predict.

As per data revealed by the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis), 659,541 hectares of land burned over the continent between the time periods of January and August, which is the largest ever recorded since records began in 2006. The data stated that the total land area burned across the continent is twice as large as it was during 2006–2021. However, the overall number of fires has increased by more than four times.

The figures surpassed the previous record of 2017 by 56 per cent. Presently, over a million hectares of land could be destroyed by wildfires this year as anticipated by the current trends, The Guardian reported.

The statistics were made public after the European Union’s Copernicus atmosphere monitoring service (Cams), issued a warning last week stating that there was a severe fire hazard in Western Europe. According to Cams, active fires were higher than average in Spain, France, and Portugal in July and August.

Nearly 10,000 people were evacuated during the Landiras fire in France. It burned through 14,000 hectares in July. Similarly, a major wildfire that had been raging for a week in Serra da Estrela was brought under control by Portugal on Saturday.

However, in Spain, a fire in Zaragoza forced the evacuation of eight communities and 1,500 people after the authorities claimed that the fire was out of control and had destroyed nearly 8,000 hectares. According to Effis’s stats, the overall area burned in wildfires so far this year is nearly four times the nation’s full-year average of 66,965 hectares since 2006.

Backing India’s long-standing demand, France has called for “urgent” United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reforms.

Speaking at a UNSC’s Arria Formula meet, French Diplomat Sheraz Gasri said, “France is in favour of expanding the Security Council to strengthen its authority and representativeness while preserving its decision-making character. This has been emphasised by India. This reform is urgent.”

Arria Formula is an informal UNSC mechanism under which issues are discussed without the usual formulations at the high table. It was first implemented in March 1992.

The French diplomat called for support of the “Franco-Mexican initiative on the use of the veto in the event of mass atrocities to strengthen the council’s effectiveness.”

Speaking at the same meet, India’s deputy Permanent Representative to UN, R Ravindra said, “A more representative, effective and transparent Security Council is a key pillar to India’s overall approach to the subject of reformed multilateralism.”

He added, “We are still far from a truly inclusive security council in which all its members, elected and permanent, equally share the burden of contributing international peace and security.”

The meet was called to discuss the issue of penholdership, and co-penholdership at the UNSC. A penholder is an informal arrangement at the UNSC to initiate and chair the informal drafting process at the high table.

The Indian diplomat proposed several ways to make penholdership “democratic and inclusive” which will enhance the decision making process.

R Ravindra proposed that “neighbouring countries of the topic concerned should be considered for penholdership.”

France also expressed support for the issue.

“France is open to co-penning, in order to get the best out of expertise and experience. This year we have presented texts on the Great Lakes, sometimes with the A3 countries (Niger, Kenya and Tunisia), and recently with India,” French diplomat Gasri said.

Notably, Norway and Estonia were penholders on Afghanistan last year at UNSC, a year that saw the Afghan republic collapse.

After thousands of their birds went missing after being released into harsh weather during an inappropriate competition, Belgian pigeon fanciers are in an uproar. In southern France's Narbonne, the birds were released to begin their journey back to their lofts in northern Europe, but they soon encountered a summer storm. The Belgian Pigeon Federation called the results a catastrophe and accused the organisers of permitting the birds to take to the skies despite weather warnings.

Francine Lageot, the director of Liège Independent, apologised in writing on Belgian television, stating that "it is true that the competition did not go well for different reasons." However, Liège Independent responded to "unfortunate" claims regarding the way it handled the race's organisation in a statement. The organisers acknowledged one rule violation but claimed that the release of the birds was agreed upon by French, Dutch, and German officials and that the Belgian national sports president had been informed. The competition would have been considerably more challenging due to rising temperatures and strong headwinds, according to Liège Independent, because of the "climatic conditions" in the ensuing days.

The figure of 20,000 lost birds, which has been widely publicised, is "completely false," according to federation spokeswoman Didier Tison. Approximately 3,000 to 4,000 lost birds from Belgium, he continued, was an "exceptional" figure, but he was unable to confirm the total for other nations. Pigeon racing, in which birds have released hundreds of miles from home and try to return as quickly as possible, was invented in Belgium. Tracking devices are worn by racing pigeons, making it possible to determine which bird was the fastest.
