India's southern state of Tamil Nadu recorded 941 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday while Punjab reported seven COVID-19-related fatalities with 406 fresh coronavirus cases. Health authorities said two deaths were reported in Mohali and one each in Barnala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Rupnagar and Sangrur.

Health officials in Goa reported 120 COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 13.2 per cent after 903 samples were examined. The number of active cases in Goa stands at 946, according to health officials.

On Wednesday, Gujarat reported 678 new COVID-19 cases and&nbsp;four deaths with 1,082 coronavirus patients getting discharged in the last 24 hours. The deaths were reported in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bharuch. Ahmedabad reported the most number of cases with 195 new COVID-19 cases.

India reported a single-day rise of 12,847 Covid infections, taking the tally of cases to 4,32,70,577. First time in months daily cases crossed the 10,000-mark. The active cases increased to 63,063, according to the data. India's total number of deaths rose to 5,24,817 with 14 new Covid-related fatalities on Friday. The question here is, should we be worried about a potential fourth wave of Covid? The country removed a majority of Covid restrictions when the number of cases averaged below 3000-mark. However, with an uptick of cases in April, the country re-imposed some measures such as mask mandate, etc. in some parts of the country. The measures were subsequently removed. However, a country that was impacted immensely during the second and third waves of Covid, is apprehensive about a possible fourth wave of the pandemic. What did experts say last time? A similar concern was raised in March and April when experts had predicted a possible fourth wave in May and June. Meanwhile, on April 25, India's renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Devi Prasad Shetty said that there is no need to fear or have panic reactions. He also added that the concentration should be on the number of hospitalisations and not the positivity. "Third wave was not that serious, so there is no need to fear or have panic reactions. We should only go by the number of patients admitted in hospital. One lakh people or 50,000 people getting positive does not mean anything," Shetty had told reporters. No new wave, but experts show concerns At the fag end of May and start of June, when cases were rising, some experts weighed in on the situation. In a report published in the first week of June, health ministry officials said the spike does not indicate the fourth wave. Dr NK Arora, the head of Covid working group, National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation, said the rise in infections is "localised". Meanwhile, Dr K Srinath Reddy, the president of the Public Health Foundation of India said the jump suggests a new wave is building. As quoted by media outlets, he said, "Factors such as abandonment of Covid protocols, waning of immunity, and emergence of new variants are writing the script for this sequel in the Covid movie." Current Covid situation in the country The number of people who have recovered from the disease rose to 4,26,82,697. A total of 5,24,817 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 1,47,880 from Maharashtra, 69,853 from Kerala, 40,110 from Karnataka, 38,026 from Tamil Nadu, 26,225 from Delhi, 23,525 from Uttar Pradesh and 21,207 from West Bengal. Of the 14 new fatalities, eight are from Kerala, three from Maharashtra, two from Delhi and one from Karnataka. The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities. "Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research," the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation. According to the ministry, 195.84 crore doses of vaccines have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive. India has recorded its highest daily Covid tally in three months with 8,329 cases being detected in the last 24 hours, the health ministry said in its data.

This is the highest tally since February 28, when 8,013 cases were reported. The death toll also saw a marginal increase with 10 new fatalities being recorded, taking the toll due to the disease to 52,4757.

Among the countries where the new fatalities have been recorded are—Kerala (5), Delhi (2) and one each from Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.&nbsp;

The active cases now comprise 0.09 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.69 per cent, the ministry said.

An increase of 4,103 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours, the data showed.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease has surged to 4,26,48,308, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.21 per cent.

The cumulative number of doses administered in the country so far under the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive has exceeded 19.4 billion.

The surge in active cases has triggered concerns about a fourth wave in the country while new variants are being reported across the world.

However, a top official from the Indian Council of Medical Research has said that there is still no need to panic about the possible fourth wave of coronavirus hitting the country soon.

As COVID-19 cases spike, UP chief minister Adityanath stresses on wider virus tests

The national capital Delhi has made wearing face masks compulsory again&nbsp;as Covid cases are starting to pile up prompting concerns of an impending fourth wave.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Wednesday, in its order,&nbsp;said that those found violating the mask mandate order would be fined Rs 500 (US $6.5 approx.).

Meanwhile, there has been no order to close down schools or a ban on social gatherings even as the Delhi administration is keeping a close watch on the rising cases.

On Tuesday, Delhi recorded a nearly 26 per cent jump in fresh COVID-19 cases.

The health department said 632 fresh cases were reported on Wednesday and the positivity rate was 4.42 per cent.

The national capital on Monday had recorded 501 cases and zero death while the positivity rate stood at 7.72 per cent.

India’s overall cases have been low, though there has been a slight spurt in Covid cases in some states.

Haryana, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Mizoram who have been seeing an uptick in cases have been told by the Centre to monitor clusters and intensify genome sequencing.

The health ministry also warned states against laxity and said it can nullify the gains in the pandemic management so far.

India's Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday (April 19) released daily coronavirus (COVID-19) data that was recorded in the last 24 hours.&nbsp;

The data shows a steep decline in Covid cases as it recorded 1,247 infections in the past 24 hours as compared to 2,183 on Monday.&nbsp;

The sudden jump in cases on Monday caused panic among locals as many thought that the fourth Covid wave in the country is likely.&nbsp;

However, an expert has weighed in on the same as he refuted the claims. Manindra Agrawal, who is a professor at IIT Kanpur said that the fourth wave of Covid is unlikely.&nbsp;

As quoted by an India-based media outlet India Today, Agrawal explained that there are no new mutants that have come to the notice of the officials.&nbsp;

Agrawal's mathematical model related to various coronavirus trends in the country had been used as a reference to study and analyse Covid activity.&nbsp;

While speaking to the media outlet, Agrawal said that the chances of the fourth wave in India are lesser as the natural immunity against coronavirus among the people is above ninety per cent.&nbsp;

Referring to the rise in cases, he told the website, "Recently, schools have opened and people have stopped using masks so there is an increased exposure to the variant."&nbsp;

"But this will not have a severe impact on people's health as the immunity to the current variant is strong," he added.&nbsp;

COVID-19 in India: Expert weighs in on reports of fourth wave

India recorded&nbsp;1,247 coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours as capital Delhi recorded 501 COVID-19 cases on Monday.

The virus positivity rate jumped 7.72 per cent on Monday in Delhi as against 4.21 per cent on Sunday. The total death toll due to the virus in India's capital stands at 26,160.

Noida, a suburb of Delhi recorded 65 new COVID-19 cases as the Uttar Pradesh state government made wearing face masks mandatory in public places. Delhi had recorded 366 COVID-19 cases last Friday with positivity rates of 3.95 per cent.

India's health ministry informed the number of active cases increased to 11,860 with 318 new cases in the last 24 hours with the national daily positivity rate at 0.31 per cent.

Meanwhile, India's civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said RT-PCR is no longer required for domestic travel, however, he added that state governments can impose the rule if COVID-19 cases increase.

Scindia added that the aviation ministry has prepared vaccination certificates in consultation with the health ministry.&nbsp;

The aviation minister said the daily threshold of 4 lakh passengers was crossed on Monday calling it a "historic day for civil aviation ministry".
