Anna Anthony, the UK financial services managing partner at EY, points out that despite the challenges presented by high inflation, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical instability, the strength of the UK’s financial services has helped attract investors from around the world.

Anthony said, this is despite the stiff competition from other cities in Europe and around the world, but the UK continues to be a destination for investment.

The EY survey, which had data from 900 decision-makers, indicated that the UK accounted for 33 per cent of all financial services projects in Europe in the year 2023.

The total number of projects in the UK increased from 76 to 108 in the same corresponding period, which gives the UK a greater lead compared to France and Germany which managed to acquire total projects 39 and 38 respectively in the same period.

Even though London is on top in these times, Paris is strongly contending.

Buyers rated the French capital as the highest potential of the major European metropolises for future financial investments over three years.

This statement expresses the opinion of many Wall Street firms that today try to see Paris as London’s possible successor after Brexit.

London leads European financial investment despite Paris's rise

According to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) the months of April through June during the current fiscal year, foreign direct investment (FDI) into India decreased by 34 per cent to $10.94 billion, The Economic Times reported.

The DPIIT data indicated that, FDI inflows totaled $16.59 billion between April and June 2022–2023.

The figures show that during April to June 2023–24, FDI from nations like Mauritius, Singapore, the US, and the UAE decreased.

Top FDI destinations included Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Delhi.

Despite FDI inflows declining by roughly 30 per cent to $45 billion from $64 billion in 2020, India has moved up a spot to become the seventh-highest beneficiary in calendar 2021, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. In 2022, the region experienced an unprecedented surge in FDI, reaching a record high of $224.579 billion, marking a substantial 55.2 per cent increase compared to the previous year.

The remarkable growth in FDI is primarily attributed to increased investments in key countries, particularly Brazil, and significant growth across all components of FDI, with a notable focus on earnings reinvestment. The recovery of the region's economy, in line with the post-pandemic era, played a significant role in driving this surge. However, it remains uncertain if this trend will continue at similar levels in 2023, as highlighted in the annual report 'Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America and the Caribbean 2023.'

FDI inflows to Latin America and the Caribbean had not exceeded $200 billion since 2013, making the 2022 achievement even more significant. The report also highlights that FDI inflows accounted for 4.0 per cent of the region's gross domestic product (GDP), positively impacting the regional economy.

José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC, emphasised the importance of attracting and maximising the contribution of FDI to sustainable and inclusive productive development. He stated that focusing on post-establishment productive development policies, promoting productive linkages, value-added activities, human resource development, infrastructure, logistics, and local capacity building are crucial for leveraging the benefits of FDI.

Global FDI landscape

On a global scale, the FDI landscape in 2022 displayed a heterogeneous pattern. While Latin America and the Caribbean, along with other regions, witnessed FDI growth, the United States and some European Union countries experienced a decrease. Overall, global FDI inflows contracted by 12 per cent, totaling $1.29 trillion.

Analysing FDI inflows within Latin America and the Caribbean, Brazil emerged as the top recipient, attracting 41 per cent of the regional total and ranking as the fifth-largest global FDI destination. Mexico followed with 17 per cent, while Chile, Colombia, Argentina, and Peru also received significant FDI shares.

The report highlights positive changes in FDI inflows to the Caribbean, primarily driven by increased investments in the Dominican Republic, which became the second-largest recipient country after Guyana.

FDI trends and transitions

In terms of sectors, the services sector accounted for 54 per cent of FDI inflows, with the manufacturing and natural resources sectors also experiencing rebounds. Financial services, electricity, natural gas, water, information and communications, and transportation-related services received the largest share of investments in the services sector as a whole.

The United States (38 per cent) and the European Union (17 per cent, excluding the Netherlands and Luxembourg) were the leading investors in the region. Interestingly, FDI from Latin American and Caribbean countries witnessed a significant increase, rising from 9 per cent to 14 per cent of the total.

Moreover, the report highlights an over 80 per cent increase in FDI from Latin American and Caribbean countries to both regional and global destinations. In 2022, transnational Latin American companies, referred to as translatinas, reached a historic high with $74.677 billion invested abroad, the highest amount recorded since the 1990s.

The report also emphasises the energy transition's role in driving economic growth and the need for governments to prioritize it within their product development policies and agendas. It suggests that increasing renewable energy supply could position the region as a production hub for goods currently produced in countries with less clean energy matrices. FDI can play a vital role in accelerating the energy transition, facilitating technology transfer, and fostering emerging technologies.

ECLAC highlights the importance of governments in leading the coordination of strategies for successful energy transition and managing the reduction of non-renewable energy activities in line with climate commitments while mitigating economic and social costs. The foundation stone for the factory was laid virtually&nbsp;by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin&nbsp;in the presence of top officials from the Japanese firm. Situated in the Thiruvallur district near Chennai, the factory is expected to commence production by October 2025.&nbsp;

The Japanese firm signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tamil Nadu Government, regarding their plan to invest $236 million as a 100 per cent foreign direct investment.

Spread across 52 acres, their new factory, which is also their first to manufacture room ACs and compressors in India, is expected to offer employment to more than 2,000 people. The firm hopes to roll out 3,00,000 ACs and 6,50,000 compressors per year, and these products are meant to cater to local demand and exports.

Inflation under control, clear sign of revival of industrial production: Sitharaman

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has hailed the Cabinet decision to liberalise sourcing norms for single-brand retail.

"The big companies of single-brand retail have put up small factories in India. They are not able to get economies of scale. They cannot get contract manufacturing done from third parties. Their domestic sourcing too remains limited," he said.

India has integrated itself to the laws prevailing at an international level. The new norms will give India a certain place in the global value chain, he said.

"Going forward, this holistic and comprehensive approach will encourage exports, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) will come in bigger numbers, and big manufacturing opportunities which is the need of the hour will come," said Goyal on Wednesday.

The new norms will give a boost to the Make in India initiative. "For that, this is an important decision," he said.

The Union Cabinet liberalised sourcing norms for single-brand retail and allowed 26 per cent FDI in the digital media. It also decided that single-brand retail trading entities can do retail online trade prior to the opening of brick-and-mortar stores.

Goyal had said the decisions have been taken to make the country an attractive destination for FDI. Referring to the decision to ease local sourcing norms for FDI in Single Brand Retail Trading (SBRT), he said that it had been announced in the Union Budget.

"This will lead to greater flexibility and ease of operations for SBRT entities besides creating a level-playing field for companies with higher exports in a base year," he had said.

The minister said that extant FDI Policy provides that 30 per cent of the value of goods has to be procured from India if SBRT entity has FDI more than 51 per cent. As regards local sourcing requirement, the same can be met as an average during the first five years and thereafter annually towards its India operations.

"It has been decided that all procurements made from India by the SBRT entity for that single brand shall be counted towards local sourcing, irrespective of whether the goods procured are sold in India or exported. The current cap of considering exports for five years only is proposed to be removed, to give an impetus to exports."

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has hailed the Cabinet decision to liberalise sourcing norms for single-brand retail. "The big companies of single-brand retail have put up small factories in India. They are not able to get economies of scale. They cannot get contract manufacturing done from third parties. Their domestic sourcing too remains limited," he said. India has integrated itself to the laws prevailing at an international level. The new norms will give India a certain place in the global value chain, he said. "Going forward, this holistic and comprehensive approach will encourage exports, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) will come in bigger numbers, and big manufacturing opportunities which is the need of the hour will come," said Goyal on Wednesday. The new norms will give a boost to the Make in India initiative. "For that, this is an important decision," he said. The Union Cabinet liberalised sourcing norms for single-brand retail and allowed 26 per cent FDI in the digital media. It also decided that single-brand retail trading entities can do retail online trade prior to the opening of brick-and-mortar stores. Goyal had said the decisions have been taken to make the country an attractive destination for FDI. Referring to the decision to ease local sourcing norms for FDI in Single Brand Retail Trading (SBRT), he said that it had been announced in the Union Budget. "This will lead to greater flexibility and ease of operations for SBRT entities besides creating a level-playing field for companies with higher exports in a base year," he had said. The minister said that extant FDI Policy provides that 30 per cent of the value of goods has to be procured from India if SBRT entity has FDI more than 51 per cent. As regards local sourcing requirement, the same can be met as an average during the first five years and thereafter annually towards its India operations. "It has been decided that all procurements made from India by the SBRT entity for that single brand shall be counted towards local sourcing, irrespective of whether the goods procured are sold in India or exported. The current cap of considering exports for five years only is proposed to be removed, to give an impetus to exports."

The consortium Tethyan Copper company -- of which Canadian gold firm Barrick and Chile's Antofagasta Minerals control 37.5 per cent each -- is the largest Foreign Direct Investment mining project in the country.

More than a decade ago the group found vast gold and copper deposits at Reko Diq, in the turbulent southwestern Baluchistan province, and had planned a hugely lucrative open-pit mine.

But the project came to a standstill in 2011 after the local government refused to renew the consortium's lease, and in 2013 Pakistan's top court declared it invalid.

On Friday, the World Bank's international arbitration tribunal committee awarded $5.84 billion in damages to Tethyan, according to a statement from the company, because of the government's decision to shut down the mine.

Pakistan's attorney general, Anwar Mansoor Khan, said in a statement they had noted the decision "with disappointment".

The country's legal experts were "studying the Award and reflecting upon its financial and legal implications," the statement continued. &nbsp;

Ivan Arriagada, Antofagasta's Chief Executive Officer, said: "We are pleased to reach this milestone after more than seven years of arbitration."

"We remain willing to discuss the potential for a negotiated settlement with Pakistan and will continue to protect our commercial interests and legal rights until the conclusion of this dispute," consortium chairman William Hayes added.

It comes weeks after prime minister Imran Khan secured a $6 billion bailout from the IMF, amid devaluations of the rupee and soaring inflation.

Barrick and Antofagasta say the proposed plant could produce 600,000 tons of copper and 250,000 ounces of gold a year.

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) said the move will facilitate easy entry of MNCs (multi-national companies) in the retail trade.

The approval through automatic route is aimed at further quickening the FDI clearance process and many foreign players may now enter the Indian market this advantage of this.

Terming it as a &quot;serious matter for small businesses&quot;, the trade body claims the move will hamper the welfare, upgradation and modernisation of existing retail trade.

Our growing urbanisation and economic growth means we would need a lot more electricity than what is available today. In the year 2015 the peak demand deficit for power stood at 3.5 percent.&nbsp; A cursory glance at the statistics may elicit a response that it&rsquo;s not much. But the narrow gap between demand and supply is due to subdued demand. Once the economic activities pick up pace there would be a yawning gap between demand and supply.&nbsp;

To bridge this gap and keep pace with the rising demand we need a lot of investments in power sector and the central as well as state governments can&rsquo;t shoulder this responsibility alone. They need funds and foreign direct investment is a step in the right direction.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Since the beginning of 21st century the increasing demand of power raised the pitch for opening up the power sector for foreign investments. In 2012 the then UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government allowed 100 percent FDI in power sector.&nbsp;

Even before the overhaul of the FDI regulations in power sector investments were trickling in. Between the years 2000 and 2015, $9.7 billion was invested in power sector. Ever since the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) Government has come to power the total FDI inflow has been to the tune of $11 billion (in a span of three years).&nbsp;

These are impressive numbers but account for only 3 percent of the entire FDI inflow in the country. Of the 10 sectors mentioned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) power sector was at the ninth spot.

The reason for cautious investment trend lies in the challenges posed by the structure and ground realities of the power sector. The biggest challenge is arriving at a competitive tariff structure which is acceptable to both the power producer and the consumer.&nbsp;

Due to lack of clarity in pricing which included absence of long term power purchase agreement (PPA) and weak demand in August 2017 as many as 21 GW (gigawatt) of commissioned private sector coal based power plants were lying idle or operating at sub-optimal levels. &nbsp;

Another peculiarity of the investment pattern is that most of the FDI has come into the generation arm of the power sector. The other two sectors transmission and distribution (which deals with the consumer supply) have seldom benefitted from large scale investments.&nbsp;

While investment in generation is always a priority, in India, equal if not more need is felt in the transmission and distribution sectors. India&rsquo;s Transmission &amp; Distribution Losses (euphemism for theft) stand at staggering 23 percent. This is due to faulty electricity metres, old and dilapidated distribution system and weak out-dated transformers.&nbsp;

To deal with this situation the government in 2008 initiated Restructured&nbsp;Accelerated&nbsp;Power Development&nbsp;and&nbsp;Reforms&nbsp;Programme&nbsp;(R-APDRP). The focus of the program was to bring down AT&amp;C&nbsp;loss, adoption&nbsp;of&nbsp;information&nbsp;technology&nbsp;in&nbsp;energy&nbsp;accounting, consumer care and strengthening distribution network of State Power Utilities.&nbsp;

It is here that the government can benefit from targeted FDI. This is a huge opportunity area as most of the state power utilities are financially weak and also don&rsquo;t have the technical and human resource abilities to upgrade the legacy systems.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Investments in manpower training, smart metering and general improvement of distribution system that brings down the T&amp;D loss from 23 percent to 10 percent or less will phenomenally improve the health of the state power utilities. FDI can be attracted by offering a long term stable profit sharing mechanism to those companies who bring in their technology as well as finances.

Another opportunity lies in the renewable energy space. In the last one decade, away from the eyes of the mainline media, renewable energy has scripted an emphatic story of growth and expansion. Even before committing to Paris Climate Deal, India had fundamentally revised its ambition of expanding installed renewable energy capacity especially solar energy.&nbsp;

Today our target for 2022 has been revised (20000 megawatt under Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission initiated in 2009) to 100000 megawatt. Similarly wind energy goals have been revised and together the installed renewable energy capacity target now stands at 175000 megawatt. &nbsp;&nbsp;

If the government consciously directs FDI in solar and wind sectors as well as in manufacturing of equipments and batteries and storage research segment it would fundamentally alter the energy sector in general and renewable energy sector in particular.&nbsp;

This way India would be able to judiciously utilize the foreign funds and make up for the slow start during the first decade of the 21st century.&nbsp;

FDI can be attracted by offering a long term stable profit sharing mechanism to those companies who bring in their technology as well as finances. Another opportunity lies in the renewable energy space. In the last one decade, away from the eyes of the mainline media, renewable energy has scripted an emphatic story of growth and expansion. Even before committing to Paris Climate Deal, India had fundamentally revised its ambition of expanding installed renewable energy capacity especially solar energy. Today our target for 2022 has been revised (20000 megawatt under Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission initiated in 2009) to 100000 megawatt. Similarly wind energy goals have been revised and together the installed renewable energy capacity target now stands at 175000 megawatt. If the government consciously directs FDI in solar and wind sectors as well as in manufacturing of equipments and batteries and storage research segment it would fundamentally alter the energy sector in general and renewable energy sector in particular. This way India would be able to judiciously utilize the foreign funds and make up for the slow start during the first decade of the 21st century.

FDI in power sector: Focussed approach is the key

A report by UK&#39;s Department of International Trade (DIT) reveals India has emerged as the second largest international job creator in the last fiancial year.&nbsp; 
 
India also retained its spot as the third largest source of foreign direct investment in the UK, Indian news agency PTI reported today quoting DIT.&nbsp; 
 
In 2015, Indian companies created 7,105 jobs through 140 projects the report revealed. While US created 25,694 jobs taking the lead, Germany came third with 5,291 jobs from 99 projects. 
 
Liam Fox, secretary of state for International trade said the UK has broadened its reach with emerging markets, on his three-day visit to India. 
 
India is also the third largest investor in bringing foreign direct investment (FDI) to the UK for the second time. 
 
China is ahead of India with 156 projects while the US provided 570 projects, becoming UK&#39;s largest source of inward investment. 
 
In 2015, there was a 65 per cent increase in foreign direct investment flow from India to the UK, creating 7,730 jobs and saving 1,620 more in th eyear 2014-15. 
 
Dominic Asquith, British high commissioner to India said, &quot;With India we share a two way relationship of growth as the UK is also India&rsquo;s largest G20 investor.&quot; 
 
Although the report has estimated job creation figures for the last financial year, there is some fear as to how Brexit will affect the outflow of FDI to the UK.

Foreign investors, barring overseas airlines, can now have up to 100 per cent stake in local carriers, the Indian government today said unveiling significant reforms. 
 
Besides, the norms for foreign direct investment in brownfield airports have been relaxed. 
 
Aimed at attracting more funds into the aviation sector which has high growth potential, the National Democratic Alliance&#39;s latest measure comes less than a week after the unveiling of the National Civil Aviation Policy. 
 
The announcement also comes against the backdrop of persisting concerns over ownership and control at local carriers where foreign players have a substantial stake. 
 
Now, 100 per cent foreign investment will be allowed in &quot;scheduled air transport service/domestic scheduled passenger airline and regional air transport service&quot;, an official release said. 
 
Only non-airline players will be allowed to bring in 100 per cent foreign direct investment in local carriers. 
 
Under the new set-up, 49 per cent will be through the automatic route and for anything beyond, a nod from the government will be required. At present, up to 49 per cent FDI is permitted in scheduled airlines. 
 
&quot;For NRIs, 100 per cent FDI will continue to be allowed under the automatic route,&quot; the release said. 
 
&quot;However, foreign airlines would continue to be allowed to invest in capital of Indian companies operating scheduled and non-scheduled air-transport services up to the limit of 49 per cent of their paid-up capital and subject to the laid-down conditions in the existing policy,&quot; it added. 
 
Maintaining the status quo, foreign airlines will be allowed to invest only up to 49 per cent in Indian carriers. 
 
The decision to relax FDI norms was taken at a meeting chaired by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi here today. 
 
Interestingly, a proposal to hike the FDI limit from 49 per cent in local airlines in the draft civil aviation policy did not find a place in the final document, which was approved by the Cabinet on June 15. 
 
With regard to airports, the government has permitted 100 per cent FDI in brownfield projects through automatic route. 
 
Currently, 100 per cent FDI is allowed through the automatic route in greenfield airport projects while it is 74 per cent in brownfield ones. 
 
&quot;With a view to aiding in modernisation of the existing airports to establish a high standard and help ease the pressure on the existing airports, it has been decided to permit 100 per cent FDI under automatic route in brownfield airport projects,&quot; the release said. 
 
Back in 2012, the UPA government had permitted 49 per cent FDI in domestic airlines by foreign carriers. The move paved the way for setting up of two new airlines -- Vistara and AirAsia India -- and investment by Etihad Airways in Jet Airways.
