Lured by promises of high-paying road construction jobs, seven men from Dhanusha and 21 from Siraha were taken to Kashmir five months ago, reported news agency PTI.&nbsp;

A social worker from Sarlahi, Saroj Ray, uncovered the incident after two Nepali workers&nbsp;had managed to escape from the workplace and sought her help.

The&nbsp;Nepali Embassy in New Delhi and the ‘Keen India’ organisation were immediately informed about what was happening, the Kathmandu Post newspaper quoted Ray as saying.

The agents gave Rs 7,000 ($83.59) as advance payment to the Nepali workers to win their trust, said&nbsp;‘Keen India’ President Nabin Joshi.

Senior Superintendent of Police Uma Prasad Chaturvedi stated that they are collaborating with Kashmir police to apprehend and prosecute the suspects involved in the case.

“With the help of the local police we were able to identify the place where the victims were held captive and rescued them," Chaturvedi said.

“The support of Keen India organization and social worker Saroj Ray was quite significant in order to accomplish the mission," she added.

However, the identities of the men have been kept secret as per legal provisions.

According to the ministry, the workers have reestablished contact with their families back home in Nepal.

Sex traffickers are making around £21,000 per year from each victim through profits gained from forced labour, according to projections made by&nbsp;the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Worldwide earnings from forced labour soared to $236 billion (£185 billion) annually, with a growing number of individuals being affected by slavery, the United Nations' labour agency said in a report.

Though sexual exploitation accounts for 27 per cent of forced labour cases, it brings in 73 per cent of the total illegal profits, as per ILO data.

The latest figures released by the ILO represent a 37 per cent increase compared to those disclosed in 2014.

The Director General of the ILO Gilbert Houngbo stressed the importance of taking action to eliminate forced labour.

"We now know that the situation has only got worse. The international community must urgently come together to take action to end this injustice, safeguard workers’ rights and uphold the principles of fairness and equality for all.”

Amid allegations of discrimination against Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minorities in the Xinjiang region, International Labour Organization (ILO) &nbsp;members have decided Saturday to send a mission to China.&nbsp;

The ILO's main annual assembly adopted a committee finding to send a "technical advisory mission" to China to "assess the situation", stopping short of a higher-level investigation, as requested by the United States, Britain and other countries.

During the more than two-week International Labour Conference, the committee tasked with assessing China's compliance with global labour practices had heard allegations, vehemently denied by China, of systemic labour violations especially targeting Uyghur and other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang.&nbsp;

In its conclusions, adopted in full by the assembly Saturday, the committee "deplored the use of all repressive measures against the Uyghur people, which has a discriminatory effect on their employment opportunities and treatment as a religious and ethnic minority in China".

It issued a long line of recommendations to Beijing, including to "immediately cease any discriminatory practices against the Uyghur population and any other ethnic minority groups, including internment or imprisonment on ethnic and religious grounds for de-radicalisation purpose".

It urged Beijing to accept an ILO technical advisory mission and asked it to provide a report by September 1 with information on how it is applying the labour convention against discrimination in employment.

China reacted angrily to the findings, with government representative Qian Xiaoyan insisting that ILO committees should not be used as a "political instrument of some Western countries to smear and denigrate China".

The committee review came after a group of 20 UN labour experts in February voiced their "deep concern" after evaluating the treatment of ethnic and religious minorities in China.

They had assessed allegations by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) in late 2020 that Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang were systematically being used for forced labour in agriculture.

Rights groups also say at least one million Uyghurs have been incarcerated in "re-education camps" in the western region. Beijing flatly denies all such charges and maintains the camps are vocational training centres aimed at reducing the appeal of Islamic extremism.&nbsp;

Since China has not completed its ratification of conventions against forced labour, the committee review focused only on the country's adherence to Convention 111 against discrimination in employment, to which it is a party.

It "determined that many of the major Chinese producers of raw materials, solar-grade polysilicon, ingots and wafers integral to solar module manufacturing are operating facilities in the region that have employed forced labour transfers of the indigenous people of the region, and that many of these manufacturers have beneficial relationships with the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps," the report alleged.

"These manufacturers’ adoption of compulsory labour has a significant impact on downstream producers of solar modules and for the governments, developers, and consumers who buy them," it added.

In the report, the experts have identified at least 90 Chinese and other international companies with ties to forced labour. The aim of the report, as per the researchers, is to urge these companies to procure the material from some other place, rather than encouraging forced labour by associating their supply chain to the Xinjiang area.

The examples and facts stated in the report "are meant to provide stakeholders with the evidence based upon which to judge risk of exposure to forced labour in the solar supply chain," experts said.

The Xinjiang region in northwest China is home to a large population of Uighur people, a minority that faces repression from the Chinese government.

The United Nations has said reports suggest 1 million Uighur Muslims have been detained in camps there.

China denies mistreatment of the Uighurs and says the camps are vocational training centers needed to fight extremism.

A representative of the Chinese Embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Activists have warned that a focus solely on Xinjiang is too narrow, and a report by an Australian think tank earlier this year found that tens of thousands of Uighurs had been moved to work in factories across China.

In its report, the DOL said that the transportation of Uighurs broadened the risk of forced labor in supply chains.

The U.S. government’s criticism of China comes at a time of bilateral trade tensions between the two countries and limited but growing efforts by U.S. customs to ban goods tainted by forced labor, from Malaysian palm oil to Chinese cotton.

Some 25 million people globally are estimated by the U.N.’s International Labour Organization (ILO) to be victims of forced labor.

Millions of children around the world could be pushed into work as schools remain closed and families struggle to survive the economic crisis triggered by the coronavirus pandemic, the United Nations has warned.

Jennifer Rosenbaum, U.S. director for the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Global Labor Justice, said the report put companies on notice that they could be penalized in the future.

“The report issued today shows that the use of forced labor on global supply chains and the profiting by companies at the top is a problem across country and across sector,” she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

“It’s important for working people to stand in solidarity with each other.”

The DOL noted that a country with a large number of goods on the list can sometimes be an indicator that policymakers are being transparent about the problems.

Separately on Wednesday, the U.S. government said it banned the import of palm oil from a Malaysian company on suspicions that the products were made with forced labor.

The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency said it has issued 13 orders to block goods made with forced labor so far in fiscal year 2020.

Separately on Wednesday, the U.S. government said it banned the import of palm oil from a Malaysian company on suspicions that the products were made with forced labor. The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency said it has issued 13 orders to block goods made with forced labor so far in fiscal year 2020.
