Japan Airlines said its systems were up and running again after a cyberattack on Thursday caused delays to domestic and international flights.
"We have identified the cause and scope of the malfunction, and the system has been restored," said the airline, Japan's second biggest after All Nippon Airways (ANA).
The "large data attack" did not leak any customer information and safety was unaffected, Japan Airlines (JAL) said in a post on social media platform X.&nbsp;
Japanese media said it may have been a so-called DDoS attack aimed at overwhelming and disrupting a website or server.
Ticket sales for domestic and international flights departing on Thursday were suspended during the incident but have now resumed, JAL said.
Although the cyberattack did not cause major disruption, the airline earlier said that 24 domestic flights had been delayed by more than half an hour.
Problems with the carrier's baggage check-in system caused delays at several Japanese airports, local media said.
JAL shares fell as much as 2.5 per cent in morning trade after the news emerged, before recovering. Its stocks were down 0.2 per cent in the afternoon.

Separately, a transport ministry committee tasked with probing a fatal January 2024 collision involving a JAL passenger jet released an interim report on Wednesday blaming human error for the incident that killed five people.
The collision at Tokyo's Haneda Airport was with a coast guard plane carrying six crew members &ndash; of whom five were killed &ndash; that was on a mission to deliver relief supplies to a quake-hit central region of Japan.
According to the report, the smaller plane's pilot mistook an air traffic control officer's instructions to mean authorisation had been given to enter the runway.
The captain was also "in a hurry" at the time because the coast guard plane's departure was 40 minutes behind schedule, the report said.
The traffic controller failed to notice the plane had intruded onto the runway, oblivious even to an alarm system warning against its presence.

The country's space agency JAXA was targeted in 2023, although no sensitive information about rockets or satellites was accessed.

In 2022, a cyberattack at a Toyota supplier forced the top-selling automaker to halt operations at domestic plants.
And more recently, the popular Japanese video-sharing website Niconico came under a large cyberattack in June.

Typhoon Koinu brought heavy rains and powerful gusts to Hong Kong and after being the third-highest alert in the city’s warning system for most of the day was upgraded to “T9” for more than four hours when it was the closest to the city.&nbsp;

However, the observatory dropped it back to “T8” around 11:50 pm (local time). “In the past couple of hours, Koinu tracked westwards steadily. The associated hurricane force winds are gradually departing from the seas south of Hong Kong,” said the observatory, as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;

Koinu, which means “puppy” in Japanese, will likely continue to bring heavy showers on Monday as well, as per reports. Last week, the typhoon led to the death of one person and injured almost 400 people in Taiwan as it brushed past the south of the island.

The “T8” warning in Hong Kong will be in place till 11:00 am (local time) said the observatory, warning the public that “precautions should not yet be relaxed” as gale-force winds&nbsp;generated by Koinu were expected to persist. &nbsp;

<h2>Hong Kong disrupted</h2>

According to Hong Kong’s Airport Authority, as many as 90 flights were cancelled and 130 others were delayed on Sunday due to the storm. The SCMP also reported that hundreds of travellers were left stranded in Hong Kong with long queues due to most public transport being shut.&nbsp;

In line with the warnings, schools have also been cancelled for the day, according to the government. &nbsp;Local officials also received reports of more than a dozen incidents of fallen trees due to strong winds.&nbsp;

Chinese officials are reportedly on high alert even though Koinu looks unlikely to travel inland towards populous cities.

With the imminent severe weather conditions now looming large in the United States once again, the airline is facing a challenge in carrying out its operations smoothly for the second time. The service said wind gusts could reach up to 50 mph and the wind chills are expected to reach minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit.&nbsp;

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz cautioned everyone to stay safe saying that the state people are no strangers to extreme weather, but this storm "could break records."&nbsp;

Over 1000 flights cancelled as parts of US brace for severe winter storm

The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday announced that its&nbsp;NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) system— which alerts pilots and crew to advisories and information for flights— has been fully restored and the ground stop has been lifted, hours after it experienced a major technical glitch.

“Normal air traffic operations are resuming gradually across the US&nbsp;following an overnight outage to the Notice to Air Missions system that provides safety info to flight crews. The ground stop has been lifted,”&nbsp;the agency tweeted.&nbsp;

The agency hasn't provided any information as to what caused the outage to occur. “We continue to look into the cause of the initial problem,” the tweet said.&nbsp;

More than 4,300 flights came to a grinding halt on Wednesday after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)— which alerts pilots and other flight personnel about hazards or any changes—experienced a major computer outage.

In an advisory issued in the morning, FAA said that it's NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) system that&nbsp;alerts pilots and crew to advisories and information for flights had&nbsp;"failed" and&nbsp;it could not give&nbsp;a timeline as to when it would be back.

More than 3,700 flights within, to and out of the U.S. were delayed as of around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the online flight tracker FlightAware. Nearly 560 flights were listed as cancelled.&nbsp;The FAA then ordered&nbsp;airlines to pause all US&nbsp;Departures until 9 a.m. EST.

The White House denied it as a case of a cyberattack, but President Joe Biden directed the Department of Transportation to investigate the cause of the disruption.

Biden said that he was briefed by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who told him they still had not identified what went wrong.

“I just spoke to Buttigieg. They don’t know what the cause is. But I was on the phone with him about 10 minutes,” Biden said. “I told him to report directly to me when they find out. Air traffic can still land safely, just not take off right now. We don’t know what the cause of it is.”

Buttigieg said in a tweet that he is in touch with the FAA and monitoring the situation.

The outage comes due to failure of the Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system&nbsp;that alerts pilots and other personnel about airborne issues and delays at airports across the country.

"The FAA is still working to fully restore the Notice to Air Missions system following an outage. While some functions are beginning to come back on line, National Airspace System operations remain limited," the FAA said in another tweet. 
 
"Technicians are currently working to restore the system," the website&nbsp;showed.

FAA told NBC News that it was working to restore the NOTAM system.&nbsp; 
 
"Operations across the National Airspace System are affected," the FAA said.

Meanwhile, a Pakistani student who returned to Karachi from China on his own has been quarantined at a private hospital, officials said.

A top official of the Sindh Health Department said that the student Arsalan had returned privately from China as he resided in the low-income Lyari area.

"But we moved him to the private hospital and placed him in quarantine in an isolation ward on Thursday itself," the official said.

He said samples of nose fluid had been obtained from Arsalan and sent for testing to the national health organisation in Islamabad.

"If the tests of the sample come negative, Arsalan will be immediately released from the hospital but right now we can't take any risks," he said.

Pressure is growing on the Pakistan government to repatriate Pakistani students and citizens from China especially those who were in Wuhan.

Dr Qaiser Sajjad, the secretary-general of the Pakistan Medical Association, said on Friday that the students should be brought back immediately and they can be placed in quarantine in isolation wards set up in government hospitals and if their tests are negative they can be sent home.

Pakistan set up a high-level committee to suggest measures to counter the threat of coronavirus.
