<p>A devastating fire in a building that housed several workers in Kuwait's southern city of Mangaf resulted in the deaths of at least 41 people in the early hours of Wednesday (June 12). Among those killed, at least 40 are Indian nationals, including&nbsp;Malayalis, WION has learnt.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The building, which houses nearly 195 labourers from the nearby commercial area, is home to people from the southern Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu as well as from northern India, as per Indian local media reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The fire started in a lower-floor kitchen and spread throughout the building. Some individuals died after jumping from the building to escape the flames, while others succumbed to burns and smoke inhalation. Reports said that many of the injured have been taken to Adan, Mubarak and Jaber hospitals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The building is owned by NBTC group, run by Malayali businessman KG Abraham. Employees of NBTC's supermarket also lived in the building, reports suggested.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah, who oversees the interior and defence ministries, visited the site and expressed his deep concern over the incident.</p>

<p>Indian Ambassador to Kuwait Adarsh Swaika visited the Al-Adan hospital.</p>

<p>External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar wrote on X, "Deeply shocked by the news of the fire incident in Kuwait city. There are reportedly over 40 deaths and over 50 have been hospitalized.</p>

<p>"Our Ambassador has gone to the camp. We are awaiting further information. Deepest condolences to the families of those who tragically lost their lives. Wish early and full recovery to those who have been injured. Our Embassy will render the fullest assistance to all concerned in this regard," the minister&nbsp;further wrote.</p>

<p>Sheikh Fahad criticised the real estate owners and attributed the tragedy to their negligence.</p>

<p>"Unfortunately, the greed of real estate owners is what leads to these matters," he stated while highlighting the violations that he believes contributed to the fatal blaze.</p>

<p>The blaze was reported at 6:00 am&nbsp;local time (0300 GMT), according to Major General Eid Rashed Hamad.</p>

<p>A senior police commander&nbsp;said to the state TV, "The building in which the fire occurred was used to house workers, and there was a large number of workers there. Dozens were rescued, but unfortunately, there were many deaths as a result of inhaling smoke from the fire."</p>

<p>He also stressed&nbsp;the long-standing issue of overcrowded worker accommodations.</p>

<p>"My thoughts are with all those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. The Indian Embassy in Kuwait is closely monitoring the situation and working with the authorities there to assist the affected," he wrote in a post on X.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The embassy&nbsp;put in place an emergency helpline number on its official X handle and wrote, "All concerned are requested to connect over this helpline for updates. Embassy remains committed to render all possible assistance."</p>

<p>As per the preliminary reports, no casualties were reported in the incident which happened at Lotus Boulevard Society in Sector 100.</p>

<p>The fire broke out at a time when North India was battling a scorching heatwave. As the fire blaze rose from the apartment, the residents panicked.&nbsp;</p>

<p>People who were living in the nearby flats rushed to the ground floor after seeing heavy smoke coming out from the affected flat.</p>

<p>Chief Fire Officer Pradeep Kumar Choubey, while speaking to local media, said that the fire service unit received a call from the locals and society residents regarding the incident at 10.10 am (local time).</p>

<p>"We immediately rushed five vehicles (water tenders) to the spot. But before our vehicles could reach there, the firefighting systems installed in the society managed to put out the fire within 10 minutes," Choubey said.</p>

<p>"The fire was triggered by a blast in the AC (air conditioner). Since the firefighting systems like sprinklers, extinguishers, hoses, were working fine, the fire did not spread out much and was contained in one room (of the flat)," &nbsp;he added, further stating that no loss of life or injury to any person was reported in the incident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>An "AC blast" means a fire or an explosion in an air conditioning (AC) unit. This can happen because of different reasons like electrical or mechanical failures, as per the officials.&nbsp;Here's what you can do to keep your air-conditioning safe.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Regularly change air filters&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>A clogged filter stops airflow because of which the AC has to work harder and it overheats. Hence, it is advisable to regularly change it.</p>

<p>This tragic incident comes after Rajkot in the state of Gujarat also witnessed a harrowing blaze at a gaming zone on Saturday (May 25) that left at least 27 individuals, including nine children, dead.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the Delhi fire incident, the report of the blaze reached the capital's fire services at around 11:32 pm. In a swift response by the Delhi Fire Services, 16&nbsp;fire tenders were rushed&nbsp;to the spot to combat the blaze.</p>

<p>Amid the chaos, officials reportedly said that 12 newborns were rescued from the engulfed facility, but tragically, seven succumbed to&nbsp;injuries while receiving medical care. Currently, six, including a child on a ventilator, are undergoing treatment, reports said.&nbsp;</p>

Two buildings were affected by the fire, one is the hospital building and 2 floors of a residential building on the right side also caught fire...11-12 people were rescued and they were taken to hospital."</p>

<p>It remained unclear how many people were present in the apartment when the fire broke out. After an hour, the flames were extinguished.</p>

<p>"The fire grew strongly, destroying many motorbikes, electric bicycles, and bicycles in the yard area," said Hanoi police, in a statement.</p>

<p>"By 1:26 am, the fire was completely extinguished. Rescue forces discovered 14 people dead," it added.</p>
