In a symbolic celebration of diplomatic relations between India and Finland, a unique logo has been unveiled to commemorate the milestone year. The logo was officially unveiled by EAM Dr S Jaishankar and Elina Valtonen, Finland's Foreign Minister during their meeting in February in Delhi. Ambassador Lähdevirta expressed his admiration for the logo, emphasising its reflection of the collaborative journey shared by both countries since 1949. Speaking to WION, he remarked, "The logo symbolises very well the journey that we have had together and not only the past, I think it also shows how we can advance things together in green areas, for example." Both countries have accepted the logo for use in their bilateral communications throughout the year. Designed by Aman Narayan, a 19-year-old student at the School of Communication, World University of Design, the logo captures the essence of both countries' cultural heritage in many ways. "The logo I created draws inspiration from India’s cultural ethos as well as aurora borealis, the famous natural phenomenon in Finland commonly known as northern lights," said Narayan. With a spectrum of colours transitioning from blue to saffron, the logo symbolises the vibrant exchange and cooperation between Finland and India. On the sidelines of the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi on Friday (Feb 22), Finland's Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said that India is an "important partner" in ensuring a rules-based world order. "We need a rules-based world order. And I think India is an important partner in this," the minister said in an exclusive conversation with WION's Sidhant Sibal.

The Finland foreign minister discussed the burgeoning relationship between Finland and India, as well as pressing global issues. Foreign Minister Valtonen, while speaking on the importance of values shared between Finland and India, highlighted areas of collaboration such as trade, science, innovation, and people-to-people exchange.

During the interview, the Finland FM also spoke about global challenges, including the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Here's the complete transcript of the interview:

WION: How do you see your India visit? What will be your key focus area during your ongoing India visit?

Valtonen: Happy to be in India. A key priority [is] developing the relationship. I think Finland and India hold so many important values. And we do engage in trade and science and innovation a lot and of course in people-to-people exchange. So I think this is a fantastic opportunity to just show that there's even more we can do.

WION: How do you see the increased engagement between the two sides? Are we expecting more high-level visits?

Valtonen: Current government in Finland has been in office for eight months and this is the third ministerial visit already to India. So it just goes to show that we really prioritise India a lot. And I'm sure that there will be high-level visits also going forward. And we of course welcome Prime Minister Modi to visit us in Helsinki anytime.

I think when it comes to the reform of the UN, it's very much needed in order to reflect the realities of today, and Finland of course, supports India's [permanent] membership in the Security Council.

WION: It's been almost two years since the Ukraine conflict started. What is the current situation as of now?

Valtonen: Well, it's not a conflict. It's a war of aggression that Russia is waging against Ukraine. Ukraine, as a sovereign country, has the right based on the UN Charter on [violation of] its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and also the right to defend itself.

And I think it's the moral obligation of the entire world to help them in this struggle because Russia is blatantly in violation of the treaties, and international law and the UN Charter. And if we don't stop them now, this will perhaps encourage other authoritarian states to do whatever they like.

We need a rules-based world order. And I think India is an important partner in this.

WION: Are you going to discuss this with your Indian counterpart? I'm asking this question because India does have a very good relationship with Russia. Do you see India reaching out to Russia?

Valtonen: Well, India is an emerging power, and also being the largest democracy in the world... I think it is in our hands to change the course of the world.

Do we want to have an authoritarian world where the people on the streets don't have a thing to say on what comes to their... work life when it comes to their everyday choice as consumers or being able to be entrepreneurs or on the political side?

That's the Russians' choice. And I don't think India wants to be in that. And also, what worries us a lot in the Nordic countries is that there's increased cooperation between Russia and China.

And I don't think we can leave the world to our children and grandchildren in a place where only the most powerful... only the most ruthless, authoritarian states have the same.

WION: Your country became part of the NATO grouping as well. How has it strengthened your security?

Valtonen: It has indeed strengthened our security and we joined NATO in order not to offend anybody but simply to also contribute to the overall European security architecture.

Finland has always invested very heavily in defence because we were in our past invaded by Russia or Soviet Union back then.

And luckily, we were able to fend them off because, we as a small nation... defended ourselves and we were able to remain independent and not become part of the Soviet sphere.

And I think this imperialism or colonialism, if you will, that should be something of the past and therefore, we strongly sympathise with the Ukrainians. We can't accept this to happen.

WION: How do you see the India, Nordic, and Baltic relationship panning out? How do you see this engagement going in the future?

Valtonen: The engagement is very, very high right now and it's only getting higher by the day. And I think it goes to show that we are here together with Nordic and Baltic colleagues of mine and visiting the Indian foreign minister.

I think this is a tremendous opportunity to discuss all the opportunities that we have on the trade and exchange side in innovation and science and people movement.

But of course, also the geopolitical situation because I think together, we can stand up for the right values in this world.

WION: [Finland] being a leader when it comes to clean technology, India is a country that needs technology... that needs energy. How can your country help in terms of the clean technology that India is keen on?

Valtonen: Finland has always said that every person on this planet has the right to fresh air.

And that obviously applies to Indians as well. And Finland is one of the frontrunners in clean technologies.

Also, when it comes to the provision of clean water, and I think together, our companies can do very, very much and we are happy to invest in India, and of course, have Indian investments back at home.

Finnish voters choose a centre-right party leader as their next President. What are the issues that await Alexander Stubb?

Conservative leader becomes Finland's next President

Finland’s centre-right candidate and former Prime Minister Alexander Stubb, on Sunday (Feb 11) won the high-stakes Finnish presidential election after his rival ex-foreign minister and liberal candidate Pekka Haavisto conceded with nearly all the votes counted.

What happened?

The National Coalition Party (NCP) candidate narrowly won defeating liberal Green Party member Haavisto who conceded saying “Well, Alexander. Congratulations to Finland’s 13th president.”

He added, “I believe Finland now gets a good president for the republic. Alexander Stubb is an experienced, competent person for the job. No more babble.”

Stubb had declared himself the winner in the run-off vote after securing 51.6 per cent of the votes after 99.7 per cent of ballots had been counted, against Haavisto’s 48.4 per cent, reported Reuters citing justice ministry data.

The pro-European and strong supporter of Ukraine made a return to politics with this election after a seven-year hiatus. “This is the greatest honour of my life,” said Stubb after Haavisto conceded.

The NCP candidate also led the polls after the first round on January 28 with 27.2 per cent of votes, while Haavisto came in a close second with 25.8 per cent of the vote.

High-stakes election

Amid the increased tensions between Finland and neighbouring Russia since the invasion of Ukraine, the election for the Nordic nation came at an unprecedented time.

Helsinki has also recently become a part of NATO and closed its eastern border with Russia, actions which would have been dismissed as an absurd thought a few years ago.

Unlike most European countries, the president of Finland holds executive power in formulating foreign and security policy, including acting as the supreme commander of the country’s armed forces.

Stubb will replace incumbent President Sauli Niinisto, 75, who is required to step down after serving two six-year terms. The 55-year-old will take office amid severely strained relations between Finland and Russia following Moscow’s invasion of Kyiv in 2022.

Notably, international security and defence were a high priority for Finnish voters. Finland has witnessed an influx of migrants entering through its eastern border without visas and accused Russia of pushing its migrants in a hybrid attack to destabilise it.

Stubb and Haavisto, have both served as foreign ministers and championed Finland’s independence and its new role as a NATO member. They also called for a tough stance towards Russia.

However, Stubb is in favour of deep NATO cooperation including transport of nuclear weapons across Finnish soil and placing some troops of the United States-led alliance in the country permanently. However, he does not support storing nuclear weapons in Finland.

Finland: Former PM Alexander Stubb wins high-stakes presidential election

Finland, home to legendary telecom giant Nokia and several other beloved brands, is among the countries engaged in India's growing market for years now. Business Finland, a leader in promoting Finnish business interests in India, is bullish about the South Asian economy as a business and investment destination and is helping Finnish companies achieve global growth through strategic matchmaking with Indian system integrators.

Indian markets with Finnish expertise

"India is the most important market so we started this programme with India and we are going to expand this further," said Robin Singh, head of the System Integrator Programme at Business Finland, in an exclusive interview with WION.

By partnering with key Indian integrators like Infosys and HCl, Business Finland matches Finnish technological expertise with Indian market needs, fostering fruitful collaborations, said Singh, explaining the group's strategies and initiatives.

He was speaking on the sidelines of an event organised in collaboration with the Embassy of Finland in India on Wednesday (Feb 7).

"We understand their (Indian companies) needs and what their clients are looking for and we go back to Finland, search for the right technologies partner from Finland, and bring them here to matchmake them with Indian system integrators."

India as the market place: Cultural understanding and market navigation

Singh stressed the importance of patience and focus when entering a diverse and complex market like India.

"The most important part is for them [companies] to understand the complexity of the Indian market. There was this company which came to us last year and they told us that when they started working in India, 30 years back, India was the most loss-making country for them but today India is the biggest market both in terms of value and volumes for them globally," he shared.

"So, that is the kind of reward that you get from India and we always tell them that when you come to India, take our support, take our guidance and you will be rewarded really really well."

"India is a complex market. India is a big market," he said, adding, "But having said this, India is also a very rewarding market. India has already become, for some of our companies, either the biggest market already in the world for them or if not the biggest, one of the top three markets for our companies globally."

Business Finland provides essential support to Finnish companies, offering guidance on navigating cultural nuances and finding the right partners to ensure success in India's dynamic business landscape, he said.

"We explain that to Finnish companies and tell them that if you are looking at India, be patient, be focused. You just can't knock on the door, try and sell something and go back. It's not going to work that way in India. If you have to come and get rewarded in India, find the right partners, take our support and we can help them with market research, we can help them find the right partners. We can also guide them and navigate them in this complex Indian market," Singh said.

Fostering collaboration through strategic events

Business Finland creates opportunities for meaningful engagement and partnership building, by partnering with organisations like the Finnish Chamber of Commerce and participating in key tech summits.

Business Finland organises industry-specific meetings, networking events, and delegations to facilitate collaboration between Finnish and Indian companies.

"We also have the Finnish Chamber of Commerce, which has about 35 companies, part of the planning that they have and we organise events for Fincham. We also organise delegations with visits of Finnish companies to India," Singh pointed out.

"These are our own events and then we also are the prime partners for other events such as the Bengaluru Tech Summit. We also have a collaboration with the government of Karnataka. We also participate in the India Mobile Congress (IMC) and then we also collaborate at the global scale for events Mobile World Congress etc."

Singh highlighted the significance of India's growing startup ecosystem and the potential for Finnish companies to thrive in collaboration. With a focus on emerging technologies like 6G, Artificial Intelligence, and sustainability, Business Finland looks forward to foster research partnerships and commercial ventures between Finnish and Indian entities.

6G Bridge programme: Seizing opportunities in emerging technologies

By leveraging India's aspirations in the 6G space in mobile telephony and Finland's expertise, the 6G Bridge programme seeks to facilitate collaboration between Indian system integrators and Finnish entities.

"There was a report where the government of India said that India would want to have at least 10 per cent of the total Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) registration globally in the 6G space and we at Finland and Finland as a country, we have decided to be the torchbearer of 6G globally."

"In the year 2018, we started working on 6G and the government has funded about 300 million euros to develop the right set of 6G skills and research within Finland and we believe that what India is looking for and what Finland can offer there is a great match."

6G Mobile World Congress 2024

Singh said that this year, at the 6G Mobile World Congress they are taking about 20 countries including Finland in the communication space, metaverse, and sustainability.

"Along with these 20 countries, we are also taking four research centres including the University of Oulu. We have already reached out to the system integrators from India. We have received a positive response and they have also agreed to do very focused matchmaking events in Barcelona."

Partnerships in AI

Finnish companies are seeking collaboration with Indian firms on AI, where India boasts a vast and rapidly growing market, fueled by a combination of technological advancements and increasing digitalisation.

On this, Singh said, "We are the first country in Europe to have a metaverse strategy. We are the second in Europe to have an AI strategy. We are very strong. We are called the torchbearers of communication technologies and we are number one in sustainability solutions globally. Looking at the opportunities in India and the push from the government I think sustainability and AI... these are the two areas where I believe we are going to see a lot of opportunities for the Finnish companies, especially in the sustainability space."

"We understand their (Indian companies) needs and what their clients are looking for and we go back to Finland, search for the right technologies partner from Finland, and bring them here to matchmake them with Indian system integrators." India as the market place: Cultural understanding and market navigation Singh stressed the importance of patience and focus when entering a diverse and complex market like India. "The most important part is for them [companies] to understand the complexity of the Indian market. There was this company which came to us last year and they told us that when they started working in India, 30 years back, India was the most loss-making country for them but today India is the biggest market both in terms of value and volumes for them globally," he shared. "So, that is the kind of reward that you get from India and we always tell them that when you come to India, take our support, take our guidance and you will be rewarded really really well." Also Read | G20 raised India`s profile as voice of Global South, IMEC has potential: Finnish envoy to WION "India is a complex market. India is a big market," he said, adding, "But having said this, India is also a very rewarding market. India has already become, for some of our companies, either the biggest market already in the world for them or if not the biggest, one of the top three markets for our companies globally." Business Finland provides essential support to Finnish companies, offering guidance on navigating cultural nuances and finding the right partners to ensure success in India's dynamic business landscape, he said. Fostering collaboration through strategic events Business Finland creates opportunities for meaningful engagement and partnership building, by partnering with organisations like the Finnish Chamber of Commerce and participating in key tech summits. We also participate in the India Mobile Congress (IMC) and then we also collaborate at the global scale for events Mobile World Congress etc." Singh highlighted the significance of India's growing startup ecosystem and the potential for Finnish companies to thrive in collaboration. With a focus on emerging technologies like 6G, Artificial Intelligence, and sustainability, Business Finland looks forward to foster research partnerships and commercial ventures between Finnish and Indian entities. 6G Bridge programme: Seizing opportunities in emerging technologies By leveraging India's aspirations in the 6G space in mobile telephony and Finland's expertise, the 6G Bridge programme seeks to facilitate collaboration between Indian system integrators and Finnish entities. "There was a report where the government of India said that India would want to have at least 10 per cent of the total Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) registration globally in the 6G space and we at Finland and Finland as a country, we have decided to be the torchbearer of 6G globally." "In the year 2018, we started working on 6G and the government has funded about 300 million euros to develop the right set of 6G skills and research within Finland and we believe that what India is looking for and what Finland can offer there is a great match." 6G Mobile World Congress 2024 Singh said that this year, at the 6G Mobile World Congress they are taking about 20 countries including Finland in the communication space, metaverse, and sustainability. "Along with these 20 countries, we are also taking four research centres including the University of Oulu. We have already reached out to the system integrators from India. We have received a positive response and they have also agreed to do very focused matchmaking events in Barcelona." Partnerships in AI Finnish companies are seeking collaboration with Indian firms on AI, where India boasts a vast and rapidly growing market, fueled by a combination of technological advancements and increasing digitalisation. WATCH | Finnish envoy speaks to WION on IMEC, G20, India-EU FTA & more | WION Originals × On this, Singh said, "We are the first country in Europe to have a metaverse strategy.

Finland’s former prime minister and conservative candidate Alexander Stubb narrowly won the first round of the Nordic nation’s presidential election on Sunday (Jan 28), and will face ex-foreign minister and liberal candidate Pekka Haavisto in a run-off next month.

What happened?

With all the votes counted, right-wing National Coalition Party’s Stubb took the lead with 27.2 per cent, followed by liberal Green Party candidate Haavisto with 25.8 per cent support, while Jussi Halla-aho from the far-right Finns Party came in third with 19 per cent support, according to the election officials.

Since none of the candidates managed to garner more than 50 per cent of the votes, a run-off between the top two will be held on February 11. According to official data, the voter turnout for the first round stood at 74.9 per cent, up from 69.9 per cent in the last presidential election in 2018.

“You know what, we made it to the final, but the competition will only begin now,” Stubb, 55, told his supporters.

“We made it to the second round. That is now clear,” Haavisto, 65, told his supporters at his election party on Sunday night. He added, “I am very happy and satisfied. We have worked hard for this.” If elected, Haavisto would become Finland’s first openly gay president.

Both Stubb and Haavisto have supported Ukraine and called for tough measures against Russia. The relations between Finland and Russia have significantly deteriorated following Moscow’s invasion of Kyiv in 2022.

The border closure and Helsinki’s NATO membership prompted Moscow to warn the Nordic nation of “counter measures”.

Unlike most European countries, the president of Finland holds executive power in formulating foreign and security policy, including acting as the supreme commander of the country’s armed forces.

Therefore, the incoming president would shape foreign policy in collaboration with the government and would potentially change the geopolitical landscape of the Nordic nation by deciding on how to deal with countries like the United States, Russia and China.

Around 4.5 million citizens are eligible to vote in this presidential election and will head to the polls to choose their head of state from an array of nine candidates to replace incumbent President Sauli Niinisto, 75, who is required to step down after serving two six-year terms.

What about the candidates?

Two politicians are currently leading the race, former conservative Prime Minister Alexander Stubb, 55, and ex-Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, 65, of the Green Party, who is running as an independent.

However, since both candidates are not expected to garner more than 50 per cent of the votes, the chances of Sunday’s vote being pushed into a run-off in February are said to be high.

According to recent polls, Right-wing National Coalition’s Stubb is expected to get 22 per cent to 27 per cent support in the first round, followed by Haavisto polling strongly on 20 per cent-23 per cent support, and Jussi Halla-aho from the far-right Finns Party at 18 per cent.

Russia factor

The relations between Finland and Russia have significantly deteriorated following Moscow’s invasion of Kyiv in 2022. The war also prompted Helsinki to drop decades of military non-alignment and join NATO in April 2023.

In August 2023, Finland observed an influx of migrants entering through its eastern border without visas and accused Russia of pushing its migrants in a hybrid attack to destabilise it.

Notably, similar allegations against Moscow were made by Poland, which has also ramped up security along its border with Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an interview on Sunday (Dec 17), warned of problems with neighbouring country Finland after it joined NATO earlier this year.

Putin said that Moscow, in response, will create a new military district in the northwest part of Russia.

"They (the West) dragged Finland into NATO. Did we have any disputes with them? All disputes, including territorial ones in the mid-20th century, have long been solved," Putin told a state TV reporter.

"There were no problems there, now there will be, because we will create the Leningrad military district and concentrate a certain amount of military units there."

Finland, which shares a 1,340-kilometre (830-mile) border with Russia, joined NATO in April this year amid Moscow's Ukraine offensive.

Putin's remarks come after Finland, again this week, shut its border with Russia, condemning it for staging a migrant crisis on its border.

Moscow has forewarned of counter-measures in retaliation to Helsinki's NATO accession.

Putin also said that Russia had no reason to be at war with NATO countries after United States President Joe Biden said that Moscow "won't stop" in Ukraine if it is successful there.

"It is rhetoric to justify false policy on Russia," Putin said.

He said Moscow had "no interest, either in geopolitical, economic or military terms, to fight with NATO countries."

Arthur Parfenchikov, the governor of Karelia, the Russian region bordering Finland, said Thursday on X, that "there are groups of migrants among the people wishing to cross the border."

Finland eliminated reigning champions Canada with a 2-1 Davis Cup last eight triumph, buoyed by fervent support as the finals began in Malaga on Tuesday. Following their triumph in the Billie Jean King Cup earlier in November, Canada hoped to continue their success in the men's World Cup of tennis, but were ousted as Finland reached the semi-finals for the first time.

Canada's Milos Raonic eased to a 6-3, 7-5 win over Patrick Kaukovalta in the first singles rubber before Otto Virtanen kept Finland's hopes alive by beating Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 7-5. Virtanen returned alongside Harri Heliovaara to triumph 7-5, 6-3 in the decisive doubles against Alexis Galarneau and Vasek Pospisil to delight a few thousand Finnish supporters on the Costa del Sol.

"We played really great doubles today...we played really great together," said Virtanen. "Why stop here, we have even more party on Friday," added Heliovaara. Neither country had their top-ranked player available, with Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime and Finland's Emil Ruusuvuori both hurt. Raonic came flying out of the blocks with four aces to hold to love in the first game against Kaukovalta and racked up 18 in total in his straight sets triumph.

The former world number three made his competitive comeback in June after nearly two years away because of injuries but his high-power serve remains as lethal as ever. Despite a splash of Canadian red in the stands at the Martin Carpena arena being outnumbered by those in blue and white, the Canadian held his nerve in his first Davis Cup match since 2018.

After breaking for a 5-3 lead in the first set and serving it out, dropping just one point on serve in the process, Raonic lost only two more in the second set of his convincing victory. "I have definitely never played against anyone with that kind of serve," said Kaukovalta.

"I had no read for it at any point of the match." However Virtanen, who played a key role in Finland's progress to the Davis Cup finals, gave Finland's support plenty to cheer about.

The Finnish duo got the better of 2014 Wimbledon doubles champion Pospisil and his partner Galarneau, breaking at the second time of asking to take the first set 7-5.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine shook the world in February 2022. Political and military arenas felt the weight of history as forces of a former superpower crossed borders to wage a war many thought would be over within weeks given Russia's more than decisive superiority over Ukraine in military might. The invasion suddenly brought the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) into focus and made European countries closer to Russia rethink their decades-old stance of military neutrality.

Sweden and Finland were among these nations. After Russian troops began their clash with Ukrainian forces, Sweden and Finland promptly applied for membership in NATO.

Why?

Because NATO was a guarantee of security, at least on paper, against external aggression. An attack on one NATO country is considered an attack against all. So at least in theory, the aggressor against a NATO nation will have to face the might of all 31 member countries. And to include new members, there must be approval from all current members.

Sweden and Finland's path to NATO membership was not smooth. In focus have been two countries, Turkey and Hungary. But Turkey is considered somewhat of the main obstacle. After a delay caused by Turkey in giving its seal of approval, Finland joined NATO this year. However, it has not fully completed the process for Sweden's inclusion.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan himself has given the green light to Sweden's inclusion. But this needs to be ratified by Turkey's parliament. And procedural delay over the last year has been perceived as Turkey's reluctance to let Sweden in.

In May last year, Erdogan objected to Finland and Sweden's inclusion saying both countries need to crack down on elements within their borders which Ankara deems to be terrorists.

Has Turkey benefitted from its continued opposition to Sweden and formerly, to Finland's inclusion in NATO?

It's worth taking a look.

The moves in the Western, and Nordic camps

The West has always been keen on the expansion of NATO as the grouping was born as a West-supported anti-Russia alliance during the Cold War. However, the urgency appears to have increased after the outbreak of the Ukraine war.

Sweden and Finland's concessions to Turkey

Turkey made an agreement with Sweden and Finland at a NATO meeting in Madrid last year that saw the Nordic countries lift arms embargoes against Turkey. The countries also took some action against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the so-called Gulen movement. Along with Turkey, the United States and the European Union consider PKK to be a terrorist group. And Turkey considers the Gulen movement responsible for the 2016 coup attempt.

Last year, Sweden lifted the ban on military equipment export to Turkey. Stockholm introduced an anti-terrorism bill in June that made being part of a terrorist organisation against the law.

Multiple incidents of Quran burning in Sweden have drawn sharp reactions in the Muslim world, including in Turkey. In response to this, Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer said Sweden was exploring the possibility of changes in the law which would ban the burning of the Quran in public.

Finland on its part, said last year that it would consider granting arms export to Turkey on a case-by-case basis.

Canada quietly reopened talks with Turkey to lift export controls on drone parts after Erdogan said in July that Sweden would eventually get the green light to join NATO. Canada is a NATO member.

Moreover, the Netherlands lifted restrictions on arms deliveries to Turkey.

All is not rosy

Turkey argues that the United States is trying to pressure Turkey by delaying the F-16 deal. Turkey had made the purchase request in 2021 to buy F-16 fighter jets and modernisation kits worth USD 20 billion. Although the US denies the connection between the F-16 deal and Turkey's delay in greenlighting Sweden's NATO bid, US Congress has heard opinions from lawmakers to use the deal as a way to nudge Turkey to approve Sweden's inclusion.

Moreover, just a day after Erdogan gave his seal of approval for Sweden to join NATO in July, the White House announced that it would go ahead with the transfer of F-16s while being in consultation with Congress.

So what's the current state of Sweden's bid?

There were signs on Wednesday (November 29) that Turkey may finally be moving ahead with the process.

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said that his Turkish counterpart told him that he expects parliament to ratify Sweden's bid within weeks.

"I had a bilateral with my colleague, the (Turkish) foreign minister ... where he told me he expected the ratification to take place within weeks," Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom told reporters before the second day of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers.

"The Turkish foreign minister (Hakan Fidan) didn't present a date but said 'within weeks'," Billstrom said.

Hungary, another NATO member, is yet to give its seal of approval to Sweden's NATO membership as well. But Turkey is seen as the main obstacle.

"(Prime Minister) Viktor Orban has repeatedly said that Hungary won't be the last to ratify Sweden's membership," Billstrom said.

"That means that it is more in the hands of Ankara than maybe of Budapest. We expect white smoke from Budapest the moment there is white smoke from Ankara," Billstrom said.

Explained: Did Turkey benefit as it delayed Sweden's NATO bid?

Finland has closed the last crossing along Russian border prompting Moscow to condemn an absolutely redundant measure. Finland says that it has become the target of a Russian hybrid operation and it accuses Russia of funneling migrants from Yemen, Afghanistan, Kenya, Morocco, Pakistan, Somalia and Syria into Finland.

Finland closes all border points with Russia for two weeks to stop asylum seekers

Finland will close its entire border with Russia to travellers for the next two weeks in a bid to halt the unusually large flow of asylum seekers to the Nordic nation, which the government and its allies say is an orchestrated move by Moscow.

Finland to close border with Russia for two weeks

Finland has accused Russia of orchestrating an "influence" operation into the European Union and has decided to close all its land borders with the country being presided over by Vladimir Putin.

All but one Finland-Russia border crossing was open for the transit of people and goods. But after what was reported to be an "extraordinary cabinet meeting" in Helsinki, it was announced that the Raja-Jooseppi crossing would be closed in the far north.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said that the decision was made following the unveiling of "new information" this week.

The disclosure of new information, the prime minister claimed, has strengthened Helsinki's belief that Moscow was deliberately sending in migrants over the border. Helsinki, however, did not provide any evidence for its claims.

"The phenomenon seen at the border in recent weeks must be stopped," Orpo said at a press conference.

"This is not only about the number of visitors but the phenomenon itself. This is about Russia’s influence [on] activities and we do not accept that."

Finland-Russia ties in recent months

Finland has accused Russia of trying to destabilise its national security after nearly a thousand migrants attempted to use its eastern border crossings this month. The number was up from just a few dozen in previous months.

The historically neutral Finland effectively went into the US camp after it joined NATO in April, partly in response to Moscow's military offensive in Ukraine.

Helsinki has accused Moscow of engaging in "hybrid warfare", a tactic used to stoke tensions without a declaration of conflict.

Finland's inclusion in the transatlantic military alliance has led to outrage in and beyond Moscow's corridors of power.

Dmitry Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, said last week that Russia "deeply regretted" Finland’s decision to join NATO and that Helsinki had abandoned "longstanding, very kind relations based on mutual respect."
