Aneet Padda takes on a powerful cult leader in new web series Hunkkaar: The Roar, watch teaser

He is 42, a virgin and desperately in need of female company. R Madhavan's Shrirenu Tripathi is unlike a Bollywood hero, especially at a time when leading heroes flex their muscles and wield machetes in heavy-duty actioners. Filmmaker Vivek Soni's Aap Jaisa Koi, stands apart from regular Bollywood films on many accounts. At its core is a man who is unsure of himself, and thus shy to make friends with the opposite gender. The film has shy and conservative men pitted against liberal, free-thinking modern women. The premise holds promise, but does Aap Jaisa Koi deliver? Let's find out.

Plot of Aap Jaisa Koi

Shrirenu is a rare man in the present times. He teaches Sanskrit in a school in Jamshedpur where he gets bullied by his teenage students. At 42, he is still looking for a bride, is a virgin and secretly craves for female company. When he does fall in love with a woman way out of his league, it all seems straight out of a beautiful dream. Madhu Bose( Fatima Sana Sheikh) is 32, a French teacher who lives with her single mother and bunch of aunts and uncles in her maternal grandmother's house in Kolkata. Rings are exchanged soon after and you think, what could now go wrong now for them? Yet things go south, primarily because of Shri's bossy elder brother (Manish Chaudhary) who has set rules for women in the household. While he openly controls his wife, a bored housewife (Ayesha Raza) and a daughter who wants to study abroad, his thought process unwarrentedly also influences Shri and the way he perceives his partner.

What works and what does not

R Madhavan in a role that looks similar to Manu of his smash hit Tanu Weds Manu, shines. He is the man who can charm women with his soft words and cute smile. For decades, Madhavan's soft lover boy charisma has worked on women of all ages. Now, in his 50s, and playing a 40-something in Aap Jaisa Koi, Madhavan still manages to woo the viewers with his charm and simplicity. Certain moments when he is unsure, conscious and very shy as Madhu heaps compliments on him are truly special to watch.

Giving him company is Fatima Sana Sheikh who plays the hot French teacher with much ease. The age difference is stark and visible between the lead but the two actors rise above the limitations and deliver to their parts.

Aap Jaisa Koi begins on a promising note about two diverse characters falling in love. Gentle, shy and conservative, Madhavan's Shri is real and also extremely bland and so when the gorgeous French teacher Madhu Bose falls head over heels for him, the audience is as bewildered as Shri is. Filmmaker Vivek Soni's Aap Jaisa Koi, stands apart from regular Bollywood films on many accounts. At its core is a man who is unsure of himself, and thus shy to make friends with the opposite gender.

Plot of Aap Jaisa Koi Shrirenu is a rare man in the present times. What works and what does not R Madhavan in a role that looks similar to Manu of his smash hit Tanu Weds Manu, shines. You want to go along with the story that is being told, yet the unnecessary familial intervention makes the film middling. Here the hero is appalled at the idea of the heroine being a temptress. He is modern enough to be on a dating app, but judges the woman for being on one. Aap Jaisa Koi is shot beautifully.
Bollywood's yesteryear actor-singer Bhagwan Dada's song 'Qismat Ki Hawa Kabhi Naram Kabhi Garam' forms the theme of Anurag Basu's lyrical, poetic anthology 'Ludo'. A story of chaos, of finding love, of finding happiness as life takes its unpredictable course much like a game of dice, 'Ludo' warms you up with its stunning frames, heartwarming performances and its little details.

At the core of the story is Sattu Bhai, a gangster (Pankaj Tripathi) who also serves as the common thread in the four stories. There's a leaked sex tape that an estranged couple must take care of, a desperate wife takes the help of her childhood friend and admirer to get her husband out of the jail who has been wrongly implicated, two uncanny people- united by circumstances and fate are on the run with two big bags full of cash and an ex henchman finds himself in the company of a six-year-old who gives him life lessons that help him find closure.

Much like his previous films, Basu makes 'Ludo' a visually rich experience. Each of the scenes is framed stunningly, with the filmmaker serving as the cinematographer as well as the writer of the film. As a result, Basu implements exactly how he may have envisioned each of the scenes. The characters and their story graph are based on the colours of a Ludo board game. Green is for envy, red is for anger, blue is used for bullying and yellow for happiness. He demarcates the characters and their storyline accordingly- thereby making the film look like a rich palette of colours. Of course, when it comes to Basu, he pays dollops of tribute to filmmakers from the world over. In 'Ludo' there were scenes that looked like an ode to Wong Kar Wai's 'In The Mood For Love' and some of the chase sequences were similar to Charlie Chaplin's style and some to Jacky Chan's. And while many would argue that Basu unnecessary lifts ideas, I feel his tributes are very well incorporated into the plot of a film.

'Ludo' has a stellar star cast and every actor performs their part well. There is not a single false note. Pankaj Tripathi once again proves his range as the witty, ruthless gangster who kills and romances with equal nonchalance. It's always a delight to watch Tripathi who doesn't just deliver the best lines but also emotes through his eyes and expressions. There's, of course, Rajkummar Rao who, once again proves that given a good script, he can prove his mettle at comedy. Rao plays a lovelorn Aaloo, who willingly lets hid childhood crush Pinky (Sana Fatima Sheikh) govern his life. He can do anything for her- give up his life savings, rescue her husband from the jail and even get rid of a dead body. Channelising his inner Mithun, Rao's Aalu is a delight to watch - particularly because of how the actor plays him effortlessly.

Perhaps the most endearing track of the lot is the one featuring Abhishek Bachchan and a little girl called Inayat Verma. Bachchan plays Bittu- a once dreaded criminal - who now after serving 6 years jail term- pines for his daughter and estranged wife ( Asha Negi). Circumstances lead him to the Inayat's character- a seven-year-old who is too smart for her age and who herself pines for the attention of her busy parents. Some of the most heartwarming scenes of the film feature these two. The child is talkative while the man is brooding and the two form an uncanny bond of friendship.

A word on how the women of the anthology are written-Basu makes them unapologetic in his film. One knows how to manipulate the man who has loved her all her life (Sheikh), one openly seeks a rich man to settle down with as a trophy wife (Sanya Malhotra), one is calculative, smart and foresees a better future with a man she has just met(Pearle Maaney). The women in 'Ludo' may not always be speaking out- but are strong individuals who know what they want in life and how to get it.

Since it is an anthology, the filmmaker takes leisurely time to establish each of the plots. A lot is happening on screen and the filmmaker gives a detailed introduction of each track. As a result, the film appears to be long. With multiple chase sequence and several intertwining of plots, it can become a task to keep track of each of the stories. It is certainly a bit chaotic but the flaw is salvaged because of the detailed screenplay which most often leaves you smiling.

Anurag Basu and Pritam have in the last decade made some memorable music together. 'Ludo' does not have as many songs as Basu's last screen outing 'Jagga Jasoos' but even then they are beautiful and leave the last impression. If 'Aabaad Barbaad' is about unrequited love, in 'Meri Tum Ho' love takes ownership. The songs are so picturesque - you want to keep watching them over and over again.

A lot of things may not make sense in 'Ludo'. Like how Rohit Saraf and Pearle Maaney fall in love or how Sanya Malhotra goes on a wild goose chase looking for a missing camera with Aditya Roy Kapur two days before her wedding. There is chaos almost at all times, and much like the police in the film, you may be a little frazzled with what's happening on screen. But much like Basu (who also serves as the narrator) himself- you need to sit back and enjoy the chaos on screen. Everyone is chasing something- love, money, happiness - which you may relate to.

Anthologies are always elaborate, 'Ludo' is no different but its actors, the music and its overall message make this one a winner.
'Ludo' review: In pursuit of love and happiness, Anurag Basu's film leaves you with a smile

‘Thugs of Hindostan’ actress Fatima Sana Shaikh wants to add her two cents on the #MeToo movement that rocked Bollywood industry in India after it became a massive deal first in the Hollywood circuit.

In an interview to Mumbai Mirror, Fatima, when asked if she has faced sexual harassment ever, said, “I don’t want to expose that side of my life… I’m dealing with it, speaking to people I’m close to. Just like I won’t judge those who want to share their horror stories, I expect not to be judged for not sharing mine.”

Applauding the movement for providing a platform for victims of sexual harassment, the actress added, “Now sexual predators are scared of being shamed in public and shunned by the industry. For so many years we had normalised assault to such an extent that women had come to accept abuse as something that was normal.”

Seen last in ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ with Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Katrina Kaif, Fatima said that she was disheartened with the response to her film. She said she didn’t come out of the room for several days. She said, “We were all disturbed, we had worked on the film for a-year-and-a-half,” she sighs. However, she does not regret doing the film: “Why would I not do a film like Thugs? I still don’t consider it a setback to my career.”

Aamir has also apologised for the film and said, “I would like to take full responsibility for that. You can be sure that we tried our level best. There are people who have liked the film a lot and we would like to thank them. We are happy that they liked the film but that’s a minority. Majority of the people did not like the film and we are aware of the fact. So there is no doubt that we did go wrong. I want to apologise to the viewers who came to watch my film in the theatres as I was not able to entertain them despite trying my best. But those who came with so many expectations did not enjoy the film and I am feeling very bad about it.”
