Known for his fiery speeches, Simion – a Trump fan who sometimes dons a red cap in appreciation of his idol – hopes to get a boost from his victory.

Simion opposes sending military aid to Ukraine, wants a "more patriotic Romania" and frequently lashes out against what he calls the "greedy corrupt bubble" in Brussels.

Romania has so far only had "minions and cowards as leaders", he recently said, adding that people "no longer accept to be treated as second-class citizens" in other countries. &nbsp;

Simion has seen his popularity surge by tapping into voter anger over record inflation – 10 per cent last year and 5.5% predicted for 2024 – while promising to deliver affordable housing for all.&nbsp;

Should he reach the second round, analyst Pirvulescu predicts a "contagion effect" that would likely boost his AUR party in the December parliamentary election.

Far-right leaders eye breakthrough in Romania presidential elections

A UK judge on Monday jailed notorious far-right agitator Tommy Robinson for 18 months after he admitted committing contempt of court over a long-running libel case involving a Syrian refugee.

The sentence is the latest jail term for one of Britain's most prominent anti-Muslim activists, who is blamed for helping fuel anti-immigration riots earlier this year.

It came after Robinson -- whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon -- pleaded guilty earlier on Monday to 10 breaches of a 2021 High Court order.

It bars the 41-year-old far-right figurehead from repeating false allegations he had made about the Syrian refugee, who successfully sued him for libel.

Handing down the 18-month jail sentence at Woolwich Crown Court in southeast London, judge Jeremy Johnson said Robinson's actions were a "planned, deliberate, direct, flagrant breach of the court's orders".&nbsp;

"Nobody is above the law. Nobody can pick and choose which injunctions they obey and those they do not," the judge added.

"It is in the interests of the whole community that injunctions are obeyed."

Robinson had turned himself in to police on Friday, after an arrest warrant was issued following his failure to appear for a July court hearing on the case.

Lawyers for the Solicitor General, a senior government post advising on legal matters and which pursues such cases, said during the hearing that Robinson had been "thumbing his nose at the court".&nbsp;

<h2>An anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant&nbsp;</h2>

The court accused him of "undermining" the rule of law, including&nbsp;helping to publish a film called "Silenced", which contains the libellous allegations.

The film remains pinned to the top of Robinson's profile on the social media site X.

The former football "hooligan", who helped form the now-defunct far-right English Defence League in 2009, had landed himself back in court because of his "principles", his lawyers argued.&nbsp;

On Saturday, thousands of his supporters and other protesters marched through central London demanding his release, as well as tougher immigration laws.

Robinson, who has reportedly spent recent months outside the UK, has amassed a large online following built around his vehemently anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant messaging.&nbsp;

Demonstrators at anti-immigrant riots which erupted across England and Northern Ireland in late July and early August could be heard chanting his name.

He was widely condemned for a stream of social media posts during the week of violence, which was sparked by false rumours that the suspect behind the fatal stabbings of three young girls was a Muslim asylum seeker.

He has been a familiar sight at far-right rallies over the years, but has seen his profile grow over the last year after his X account was reinstated following billionaire Elon Musk's purchase of the platform.

Robinson repeated all the allegations against him after losing the case against Jamal Hijazi.

Hijazi, a Syrian man, was filmed while being attacked at a school in West Yorkshire. The video went viral on social media after which Robinson claimed in his Facebook videos that Hijazi was "not innocent." In addition, Robinson accused Hijazi of "violently attacking young English girls in the school."&nbsp;

<h2>Far-right rise</h2>

Created in 2013 as an anti-euro group before morphing into an anti-immigration party, the AfD has capitalised on the fractious three-way coalition in Berlin to rise in opinion polls.

In June's EU Parliament elections, the party scored a record 15.9 per cent overall and did especially well in eastern Germany, where it emerged as the biggest force.

Saxony is the most populous of the former East German states and has been a conservative stronghold since reunification.&nbsp;

Thuringia, meanwhile, is more rural and the only state currently led by the far-left Die Linke, a successor of East Germany's ruling communist party.

A third former East German state, Brandenburg, is also due to hold an election later in September, where polls have the AfD ahead on around 24 per cent.

The picture in each state is slightly different but "in any case, it is clear that the AfD will unite a very strong number of votes behind it", Marianne Kneuer, a professor of politics at the Dresden University of Technology (TU Dresden), told AFP.

The AfD has found stronger support in the east, where more voters "identify with its nationalist and authoritarian positions," and many are dissatisfied with the mainstream parties, Kneuer said.

At the party's last campaign meeting on Saturday in Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, Thorsten Haentzsche, a 52-year-old voter, said he was "dreaming of an absolute majority" for the AfD.&nbsp;

"But we are realistic. A score of at least 33 per cent would be great because it would give us a blocking minority in the (regional) parliament," he said.

<h2>New challenger</h2>

Dissatisfaction with the government has also fed support for BSW, founded in January by the firebrand politician Sahra Wagenknecht after she quit Die Linke.

Like the AfD, Wagenknecht and her party have made hay with a dovish stance towards Russia and calls for a radical crackdown on immigration.

BSW scored an immediate success in June's European elections, hauling in around six percent of the German vote, and is polling a strong third in Saxony and Thuringia.

Other parties' refusal to work with the AfD leaves BSW as potentially the kingmaker in Thuringia and Saxony, despite serious policy disagreements with potential partners, especially on Ukraine.&nbsp;

The run-up to the votes in Saxony and Thuringia has, however, been dominated by an outcry over immigration stirred up by the deadly stabbing in the western city of Solingen.

The alleged attacker, a 26-year-old Syrian man with suspected links to the Islamic State group, was slated for deportation but evaded attempts by authorities to remove him.&nbsp;

The government has sought to respond to the alarm by announcing stricter knife controls and rules for migrants in Germany illegally.

The conservative CDU, which holds hopes of winning both elections, has said the initial measures do not go far enough and urged a halt to arrivals from Syria and Afghanistan.

Protests against the far-right AfD party in Germany drew more than 100,000 protesters across the country on Sunday (January 21). The people were furious that the party members met extremists and discussed mass deportation plans. In Frankfurt alone 35,000 protesters responded to the call "Defend democracy – Frankfurt against the AfD"

The northern city of Hanover saw similar turnout and protesters were seen with posters that read 'Nazis out'.

Protests were also held in cities like Kassel, Erfurt, Braunschweig and even in smaller towns.

Calls for protests were given in over 100 locations in Germany. An appeal has also been made for a protest in Berlin.

AfD party has faced widespread criticism with politicians, religious leaders and even some Bundesliga coaches appealing people to protest against it.

For past week, there has been a mobilisation for protests against AfD, after it was revealed that members of the party attended meetings with neo-Nazis and other extremists. They reported discussed mass deportation of migrants, those seeking asylum and even of German citizens of foreign origin who were deemed to have failed in integration with the German society.

The meeting took place in the German city of Potsdam. It was also attended by Martin Sellner who supports the “great replacement” conspiracy theory. This conspiracy theory claims that there was a plot by migrants who are non-white to replace 'native' white population of Europe.

Sellner is leader of Austria’s Identitarian Movement which subscribes to the conspiracy theory.

German Chacellor Olaf Scholz himself attended a demonstration against the far-right on last weekend and underlined that plans to expel immigrants as well as citizens was and attack on democracy "and in turn, on all of us”.

He made an appeal to everyone to stand by democratic values of Germany.

The protests held by German people have been welcomed by opposition parties as well.

Protests against the far-right AfD party in Germany drew more than 100,000 protesters across the country on Sunday (January 21). The people were furious that the party members met extremists and discussed mass deportation plans. In Frankfurt alone 35,000 protesters responded to the call "Defend democracy – Frankfurt against the AfD" The northern city of Hanover saw similar turnout and protesters were seen with posters that read 'Nazis out'. Protests were also held in cities like Kassel, Erfurt, Braunschweig and even in smaller towns. Calls for protests were given in over 100 locations in Germany. An appeal has also been made for a protest in Berlin. AfD party has faced widespread criticism with politicians, religious leaders and even some Bundesliga coaches appealing people to protest against it. For past week, there has been a mobilisation for protests against AfD, after it was revealed that members of the party attended meetings with neo-Nazis and other extremists. They reported discussed mass deportation of migrants, those seeking asylum and even of German citizens of foreign origin who were deemed to have failed in integration with the German society. The meeting took place in the German city of Potsdam. It was also attended by Martin Sellner who supports the “great replacement” conspiracy theory. This conspiracy theory claims that there was a plot by migrants who are non-white to replace 'native' white population of Europe. Sellner is leader of Austria’s Identitarian Movement which subscribes to the conspiracy theory. German Chacellor Olaf Scholz himself attended a demonstration against the far-right on last weekend and underlined that plans to expel immigrants as well as citizens was and attack on democracy "and in turn, on all of us”. Notably, the election results announced last week showed that Wilders' party clinched 37 seats in the 150-seat parliament - far greater than what opinion polls had predicted.&nbsp;

However, to forge a government, he needs the backing of 76 MPs. Up until now, Wilders was relying on a coalition with the&nbsp;BBB farmers party (seven seats), the NSP which secured 20 seats and the current ruling party, the centre-right VVD (24 seats).&nbsp;

A state branch of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has been classified as a "confirmed" extremist organisation, said Germany's internal intelligence agency on Tuesday (November 7). This clears way for the intelligence mechanism to put the state branch under "systematic" surveillance. AfD rides on the anti-migrant sentiment among the German public and has seen a spike in support.&nbsp;

Opinion polls suggest that AfD has overtaken the ruling coalition led by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. AfD is now second only to the Christian Democratic Union, the main opposition party.

The intelligence agency has justified designation of Saxony-Anhalt branch of AfD as an extremist organisation. The agency's unit in the state said that the decision about the designation was taken last month.

The Saxony-Anhalt region was part of erstwhile communist East Germany. This along with other regions which were part of Soviet-era nation are traditional support bases of AfD. Regions like Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia go to polls next year and AfD leads opinion polls in all these states.

Jochen Hollman, the chief of Germany internal intelligence agency unit in Saxony-Anhalt said that it had been keeping an eye on the party since January 2021.

"The state association not only continues to advocate anti-constitutional positions... but has also become so radicalised since the coronavirus pandemic that systematic monitoring using intelligence service resources is justified," said Hollen, as quoted by AFP.

The agency has numerous concerns about AfD's state branch which it said was violating the constitution. The agency has said that party members have frequently made racist, anti-Muslin and even anti-Semitic statements. Leading party members have used "demonising language" about migrants, says the agency.

The intelligence agency also added that AfD's state unit was attempting to "erode people's trust" in democratic system and institutions.

<h2>What happens now?</h2>

The classification of AfD's state unit as a "confirmed" extremist group, the intelligence setup can use more resources to keep an eye on them without restriction. This will enable the agency to gather information about party activities more effectively.

AFP cited Germany's federal agency for civic education which said that designating the party unit as an extremist group lowers legal barriers for intelligence agencies to use monitoring methods such as phone-tapping, using undercover agents and more.

His two partners were sentenced to one year and nine months in prison and received a suspended sentence of seven months, respectively, for their involvement in terrorism-related crimes, specifically the manufacture of firearms and training to use them.&nbsp;

All four men convicted had criminal records under their names. Last summer in Helsinki, one of the suspects attempted to disrupt a storytime event for children hosted by a drag queen at Oodi Central Library.

The authorities in Germany have detained 25 members and supporters of a far-right group on allegations of planning a violent overthrow of the government. The prosecutor’s office said that 3000 police officials conducted raids across the country and the suspects were detained from Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Thuringia as well as in Austria and Italy. The authorities also suspected that they were planning an armed attack on the parliament.

The suspects will appear before a judge at the Federal Court of Justice on Wednesday and Thursday.

A spokesperson for the military intelligence service told Reuters that the people detained by the authorities included an active member of the military, some members of the military reserve force and a former parliamentary lawmaker from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).

According to The Guardian, the planning for the alleged attack started in November 2021 and the group was recruiting new members and acquiring weapons and equipment. The recruitment process mainly focused on current or previous members of the German military or the police department.

The spokesperson further added that the group was aware of the loss of life that could result from the execution of the plan and considered it to be a "necessary intermediate step".

The prosecutor’s office also said that one of the detained suspects reached out to representatives of Russia for aid. However, no official response came from the Russian representatives.

While 22 German citizens were detained on suspicion of “membership in a terrorist organisation”, the three other people detained from other countries were suspected to supporting the organisation.
