In the span of three days, fire accidents have affected the Apple iPhone assembly unit run by Taiwanese firm Pegatron and the Japanese firm Yazaki that makes automobile wirings, both of which are situated nearly 60 kilometres from the southern Indian metropolis of Chennai. Located in Tamil Nadu's Chengalpattu district, the Pegatron and Yazaki facilities are situated a few kilometres apart from each other. In both cases, the blaze was reported at night and is said to have started from an electric short circuit. Of the two, the Yazaki fire appears to have caused more operational and financial damage.

The Yazaki factory fire began around 8:30pm Wednesday night and went on for two hours, before it was put out by multiple fire tenders. Videos from the site show the severe nature of the blaze and the extent to which the smoke was billowing from the factory. It is said that a shift was underway during the fire accident and all personnel managed to make it to safety in time.

In Tamil Nadu, a state among the leading industrial powerhouses in India, such accidents taking place in such quick succession raise many questions: Whether such industries are adequately equipped to deal with such mishaps; whether the relevant Government authorities perform inspections of the safety standards at these factories; whether the personnel and guards at these factories are adequately trained to immediately respond to such incidents, etc.

It is also pertinent to examine whether such factories, that supply to giant global corporations compromise on safety while operating in India.

Despite the serious nature of the two accidents and the concerns over the safety of thousands of personnel working there, the Tamil Nadu Government has not yet reacted or issued a statement publicly. The state government machinery is working towards organising a high-profile Global Investor meet in January 2024, to attract potential investors from around the world and achieve a $1 trillion state economy goal by 2030. Such frequent industrial accidents don't augur well for these ambitions and the immense potential of a state that ranks second in the State GDP list in India.

In December 2021, near Chennai, more than 150 workers at a Foxconn facility assembling iPhones had fallen ill owing to food poisoning, and they had protested poor facilities at their off-site dorm rooms and related dining facilities. This led to Apple placing the said factory on probation, the state government reacting to the matter and ensuring corrective actions. It was after audits and inspections that the factory resumed operations in January 2022.

The owner of the Bangladesh factory, the fire at which killed 52 people was arrested and charged with murder on Saturday. Seven others have been arrested. It has now emerged that children as young as 11 had been working there.

The fire at the factory broke out on Thursday and raged for more than a day. A separate inquiry into the use of child labour has been launched.

Jayedul Alam, police chief for Narayanganj district where the factory is located, said the entrance had been padlocked at the time of the blaze and the factory breached multiple safety regulations.

"It was a deliberate murder," the police chief told AFP. All eight people detained face murder charges.

Before his arrest, Hashem told the Daily Star newspaper the fire "may have been a result of workers' carelessness", suggesting a discarded cigarette could have sparked the carnage.

Emergency services found 48 of the bodies on third floor of Hashem Food an Beverage factory outside Dhaka

The fire department said the exit door to the main staircase had been padlocked and highly flammable chemicals and plastics had been stored in the building.

The owner of a factory where 52 people died in a fire was arrested for murder Saturday along with seven others, as it emerged that children as young as 11 had been working there.

Police said Abul Hashem and four of his sons were among eight people detained over the inferno, which broke out Thursday and raged for more than a day.

Laizu Begum, who spent hours waiting outside the factory, said her 11-year-old nephew had been working on the third floor and was now missing.

"We heard the door of the floor where my nephew worked was padlocked. Then we realised, after seeing how big the fire was, that he is probably dead," said the woman, who broke into tears.

Outside the burned shell of the factory and at the hospital morgue, AFP spoke to 30 survivors and relatives of the dead, who said child workers at the factory were paid just 20 takas (24 US cents) per hour.

Bilal Hossain, the father of 14-year-old Mitu Akter, who was among the missing, went to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue with a photo of his daughter, begging police and doctors to hand over her remains.

"I sent my baby girl to die," said Hossain, who added that the company even owed the girl back wages. "How will I tell her mother?"

At the hospital, Chandu Mia held a photo of his 15-year-old daughter. "I am not sure if she is alive," he said, holding back tears.

State minister Sufian told AFP she had spoken to two survivors aged 14.

"I went to the hospital and I asked them how old they are. The youngest were 14," she said.

Sufian said some children aged as young as 14 were allowed to work in non-hazardous jobs, but that the Hashem factory was considered hazardous.

"If child labour is proved, we will take action against the owner and the inspectors," she said.

Bangladesh pledged safety reforms after the Rana Plaza disaster in 2013 when a nine-storey complex collapsed killing more than 1,100 people.

But there has been a series of fires and other disasters since then. In February 2019 at least 70 people died when a fire ripped through Dhaka apartments where chemicals were illegally stored.

Monnujan Sufian, state minister for labour, said inquiries had begun into the use of child workers at the factory. Child victims mourned Laizu Begum, who spent hours waiting outside the factory, said her 11-year-old nephew had been working on the third floor and was now missing. "I sent my baby girl to die," said Hossain, who added that the company even owed the girl back wages. "How will I tell her mother?" At the hospital, Chandu Mia held a photo of his 15-year-old daughter.

Delhi factory fire: 14 injured, rescue operations underway

Bangladeshi firefighters found four more bodies in the charred rubble of a packaging factory that collapsed due to a major blaze over the weekend, officials said Sunday, raising the death toll to 29.

Around 100 people were working at the factory on Saturday when the fire caused by an explosion in the boiler room tore through the four-storey structure on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka.

Senior firefighting official Anis Mahmud said firefighters found four bodies during a search and rescue operation on Sunday evening.

"We eventually conducted an operation after dousing the fire and recovered four bodies," he told AFP.

The official added that relatives of 10 people had filed missing persons reports in connection with the blaze.

Some 70 people were also injured, some critically, in the fire at the Tampaco Foils Limited factory, which packages food and cigarette products for local and foreign brands.

Another firefighter said he feared more bodies were still inside the factory in the industrial town of Tongi.

"There might be more bodies underneath the rubble as many people were working inside during the accident," he told AFP on the condition of anonymity.

The blaze is the latest in a series of deadly accidents to hit impoverished Bangladesh, whose $27-billion garment industry is the world's second largest behind China's.

The accident is the worst since the collapse of the Rana Plaza garment complex in 2013 that killed more than 1,100 people in one of the world's worst industrial disasters.

That tragedy triggered international outrage and successfully put pressure on US and European clothing brands to improve deplorable safety conditions at the factories that supply them.

Bangladesh factory inspector general Syed Ahmed said an investigation into the cause of Saturday's accident would be opened.

"We will find out the responsible people behind this disaster and will take all necessary and legal actions," Ahmed told AFP.

According to the company's website, the packaging factory supplies multinational and domestic brands including British-American Tobacco Bangladesh Limited and Nestle Bangladesh Limited.

Labour rights groups urged the Bangladesh government and Western companies to work harder to protect the safety of workers in their supply chains.

"The boiler explosion and resulting fire... demonstrates the ongoing dangers to industrial workers in that country," a statement from a consortium of groups, including the International Labor Rights Forum, said.
