She also spoke about how the countries would not only use physical infrastructure, and surveillance systems but also drones and other technology to protect themselves against “provocations from unfriendly countries and to prevent smuggling.”

Along with drones to monitor the border the six NATO countries will also use anti-drone systems to stop enemy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).&nbsp;

Estonia’s Interior Minister Lauri Laanemets also noted the importance of UAVs amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.&nbsp;

“As we see in the case of Ukraine, there is a constant race between the adversaries to develop technology, and new ways to use drones are continually being found in warfare,” Laanemets said as quoted by The Baltic Times.

<h2>Why now?&nbsp;</h2>

Last year, several European countries, including Finland and Poland, which share a border with Russia accused Moscow of pushing its migrants to destabilise the nations and engage in “hybrid warfare”.&nbsp;

Hybrid attacks deploy non-military measures that tend to have an element of deniability, a method that Russia has been accused of using in European nations. Moscow has repeatedly denied these claims.&nbsp;

Earlier this month, the United States-led alliance issued a sharp warning over “hostile” Russian activity across Europe and called it a threat to Western security.&nbsp;

In a statement, NATO, on May 2 accused Russia of carrying out “sabotage, acts of violence, cyber and electronic interference, disinformation campaigns, and other hybrid operations.”

Baltic nations have also repeatedly said that Russia has been intentionally jamming GPS navigation systems in their region, causing major disruption in air travel.

Earlier this month, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Warsaw has joined the European Sky Shield Initiative, which involves 21 NATO countries which will establish an Iron Dome-like air defence system to take out incoming missiles and drones.

"I have asked for the convocation of the Russian ambassador today," he informed during a press conference, adding that&nbsp;"the regime of Vladimir Putin has once again shown its true nature".&nbsp;

Norway's foreign ministry also released a statement saying it had done the same.&nbsp;

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has today summoned the Russian ambassador for a talk about the death of Alexei Navalny. In the conversation, Norwegian views will be conveyed about Russian authorities' responsibility for the death and for facilitating a transparent investigation," the ministry said in a statement.&nbsp;

Finland, Lithuania, Spain Sweden and the Netherlands are the others to have summoned&nbsp;diplomats from Russian embassies. London had done the same Friday (Feb 16) evening.

Meanwhile, Germany said it was proposing fresh sanctions against Moscow as President Vladimir Putin had once again used his powers to cull freedom in the country.&nbsp;

“We have seen the brutal force with which the Russian president represses his own citizens who take to the streets to demonstrate for freedom or write about it in newspapers,” said&nbsp;German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock.&nbsp;

“We will propose new sanctions in light of the death of Alexei Navalny.”

Notably, Germany under&nbsp;Chancellor&nbsp;Olaf Scholz temporarily took in Navalny in 2020 after he was poisoned with a nerve agent.&nbsp;

According to reports, after EU foreign ministers agreed on a 13th round of sanctions against the Kremlin on Monday, the bloc was studying ways of hitting back at Putin in a 14th round in the coming weeks.&nbsp;

The Chinese foreign ministry recently issued a notification for foreign embassies and international organisations asking them not to display “politicised propaganda,” on buildings, reported news agency Reuters, on Wednesday (May 17).&nbsp;

The notice was issued sometime this week and media reports citing diplomatic sources have said that this is in connection with several Western embassies across Beijing displaying Ukrainian flags in solitary amid the ongoing Russian invasion.&nbsp;

Since the invasion began over a year ago, Western embassies across Beijing have put up Ukrainian flags in solidarity, some of which are also accompanied by messages of support in English and Chinese, reported news agency AFP. China, remains an ally of Russia which since the beginning of the conflict has garnered international condemnation along with thousands of sanctions.&nbsp;

“Do not use the building facilities’ exterior walls to display politicised propaganda to avoid inciting disputes between countries,” the Chinese foreign ministry said in a notification dated May 10, a copy of which was seen by Reuters. The notice in question is also said to be addressed to “all embassies, and international organisations’ China representative offices.”

While the notice did not mention Ukrainian flags or what amounted to “propaganda” displays, AFP citing several European missions also confirmed that such a notice was sent to officials. Four Beijing-based diplomats, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said it was clearly related to Ukraine solidarity exhibits.&nbsp;

Similarly, one official from a European embassy told AFP it was almost certainly related to several embassies’ prominent display of a Ukrainian flag. However, the report citing another European embassy official said it was unclear whether the request was linked to Ukraine or the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.&nbsp;

This comes as foreign embassies in Beijing reportedly also raised pride flags in recognition of the campaign which was marked on Wednesday ahead of Pride Month in June to raise awareness about the LGBTQ+ rights violations worldwide.&nbsp;

When asked about the notice, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin in his daily briefing, on Wednesday, said that embassies of foreign countries and offices of international organisations in China have the “obligation” to respect Beijing’s “laws and regulations.”&nbsp;

He added, “China calls on embassies of all countries in China...to perform their duties in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations or relevant international agreements,” said Wang, without any further details. Notably, the convention does not list any prohibitions about political signage being displayed on embassies’ outer walls.

The official also told AFP that they “strictly adhere to the Vienna conventions. There is therefore no reason for us to react to this note or to change our display policy”.&nbsp;

European Union to invest €8mn for bunker to prevent evesdropping on secret talks

More&nbsp;than&nbsp;half&nbsp;of the European population&nbsp;support&nbsp;legalisation&nbsp;of adult use of&nbsp;cannabis&nbsp;and around 30% of them are interested in purchasing it, according to polling data by industry consultants on Thursday.

Europe's liberal approach could reap multiple financial and economic benefits as seen in the United States, which has witnessed a surge in&nbsp;cannabis&nbsp;use during pandemic-induced lockdowns.

While majority of&nbsp;Europeans&nbsp;support&nbsp;regulated&nbsp;cannabis&nbsp;shops, most do not favor growing the plant at home, according to the&nbsp;report&nbsp;by London-based consultancy Hanway and pot producer Curaleaf International.

"We see the European market as three to four years behind (the U.S.), but it actually looks like Europe may initiate sweeping reform before the United States," said Boris Jordan, executive at U.S.-based Curaleaf.

Should European countries want the euro to replace the dollar as the world's dominant reserve currency, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/china-warns-its-companies-on-us-travel-rebuffs-trade-criticism-224200">US-China trade war may offer a window</a> of opportunity.

The souring of ties between the world's two largest economies will indicate the extent to which China can switch some of its giant reserve holdings to another hard currency and also point to the limitations the eurozone faces in providing a viable alternative.

In the post-World War Two era, no asset has ever fully matched US government bonds for size, liquidity and credit quality. It is the closest any global security has come to being perceived as a cash-like, risk-free asset with over $16 trillion worth of paper in circulation.

Yet, a year into a bitter tariff war, there are some signs of Beijing's discomfort at being both the United States' biggest trade adversary and one of its biggest creditors.

Recent data showed China sold more US Treasuries in March than it has in any month over the past 2-1/2 years. If that proves to be more than a one-month quirk, speculation will rise about where it is diverting those reserves, and the eurozone - the world's biggest trading bloc - tops the list of likely spots.

On size alone, eurozone government bonds appear to provide a credible landing pad: outstanding securities are almost two-thirds of the overall Treasury market.

There are signs already of greater Chinese interest in Europe -- bankers attribute record Asian demand for recent Spanish, French and Belgian debt sales to Beijing.

And China has stepped up buying debt from Europe's quasi-sovereign entities, bankers told Reuters, in particular, the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) a euro zone-guaranteed AAA/A1-rated bailout fund.

Asian investors snapped up 33 per cent&nbsp;of the ESM's recent 2 billion-euro 10-year bond, data from International Financing Review shows. Asian takeup for ESM's euro issues last year was 4 per cent-5 per cent.

But for Chinese reserve managers to shift hundreds of billions of dollars from Treasuries to Europe's single currency, the euro bloc needs to address key shortcomings.

"I find it hard to square the circle how such a huge Treasury holding can be diversified away, given the landscape we are in," said Salman Ahmed, chief investment strategist at Lombard Odier Investment Managers.

"In the eurozone, there is not a big risk-free market...Twenty years down the line it may be different."

For Ahmed, the main issue is that credit risk in the bloc is not uniform. The 19 members each run their own fiscal policies, budget rules are too loosely policed to ensure adherence, and euro exit remains a theoretical possibility.

So wealthier members such as Germany remain net savers that run balanced budgets or even surpluses, while others, mostly in southern Europe, are dogged by high debt.

The resulting mix of credit and political risks make it harder to see the aggregate eurozone bond market as a true mirror of the US Treasury universe.

Ross Hutchison, a fund manager at Aberdeen Standard Investments, says it boils down to the fact the United States "has a federal nature that the euro area hasn't got yet".

Additionally, distortions stemming from years of bond-buying stimulus by the European Central Bank mean available euro government bonds are far fewer than may appear.

A common bond "would be more significant than the creation of another TLTRO in boosting demand for euros globally and reserve managers would be part of that story," said David Owen, chief European economist at Jefferies.

He was referring to the ECB's cheap multi-year loans.

"Maybe there will be more focus on pushing forward this agenda and taking advantage of the US and China having this trade spat," Owen added.

Others, however, note that wealthier states oppose any common bond programme, fearing they will end up footing the bill. Also, across Europe populist and anti-establishment movements are on the rise, with the agenda of slowing integration and returning power to national capitals.

Such groups grabbed a greater share of the vote in EU parliamentary elections last month, albeit less than expected.

"If anything, the trend is towards decentralisation of power," Ahmed said.
