Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites disrupted by major solar storm

Elon Musk's Neuralink has faced a significant challenge with its first attempt to implant its chip in a human. On Wednesday (May 8) the company revealed that its device had started detaching from the patient's brain.

A brain implant

The patient, Noland Arbaugh, had the Neuralink chip surgically implanted in February, but issues cropped up shortly thereafter, reducing its functionality.

The Guardian reports that the miniature computer's threads were observed to be retracting from the brain.

"In the weeks following the surgery, a number of threads retracted from the brain, resulting in a net decrease in the number of effective electrodes," said the company in a blog post on its website.

Neuralink, as of now, has not disclosed why this happened. However, in the blog post, it reported that its engineers had refined the implant and restored functionality.

"In response to this change, we modified the recording algorithm to be more sensitive to neural population signals, improved the techniques to translate these signals into cursor movements, and enhanced the user interface. These refinements produced a rapid and sustained improvement in BPS, that has now superseded Noland's initial performance," it said.

How did the reduced capacity affect the patient?

Despite the setback, the device continued to operate at a diminished capacity, allowing Arbaugh to control a computer and play chess using his thoughts alone. It did not appear to endanger Noland Arbaugh.

The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the complications, noted that the company considered removing the implant after discovering the detachment.

The experimental Neuralink technology involves embedding a processor and battery in the skull, which is connected to the brain via 64 thin threads. These threads interact with neural signals, allowing the user, in this case, a quadriplegic, to manipulate digital devices like keyboards or mouse cursors.

Arbaugh says that despite the challenges, the implant has significantly impacted his life.

"[The Link] has helped me reconnect with the world, my friends, and my family. It's given me the ability to do things on my own again without needing my family at all hours of the day and night," he said, as quoted in the Neuralink blog post.

Human trial of Elon Musk's Neuralink hits snag as brain chip begins to detach

The existence of aliens has always been a hot topic of discussion among humans. While some believe in their presence, others deny it. Elon Musk too isn't convinced that aliens have ever visited our planet Earth.

Elon Musk claims aliens have never visited Earth, shares proof

Less than a month ago, Neuralink announced that its brain-computer interface had been approved for human testing. However, Reuters has now reported that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered that the company had failed to keep records of animal experiments. The FDA also said that there were some issues with quality control. Investigators found quality control lapses at Neuralink’s animal research facilities in California. However, similar inspections of facilities in Texas found no problems.

Elon Musk's Neuralink brain implant hits a snag

Elon Musk, a gifted visionary, billionaire and often a controversial figure, believes aliens have never visited our planet Earth.

Addressing the perennial question at a panel titled "How to save the human race and other light topics" at the 2024 Milken Institute Global Conference held in Los Angeles on Tuesday (May 7), Musk, however, said if humanity was to send probes into the universe, we would surely find "remains of long-dead alien civilisations."

What proof does Musk have?

The SpaceX founder, whose company operates the Starlink satellite constellation consisting of approximately 6,000 units, said that his company has never come across unidentified flying objects that could suggest alien presence.

"I've not seen any evidence of aliens," said Musk, as quoted by space.com.

"And SpaceX, with the Starlink constellation, has roughly 6,000 satellites, and not once have we had to manoeuvre around a UFO… Never. So I'm like, okay, I don't see any evidence of aliens," he reasoned.

He said that this lack of evidence leads him to believe that if such advanced alien civilisations existed, they would have made their presence known more concretely.

However, he said he is open to concrete proof about visitations by the so-called little green men.

"If somebody has evidence of aliens, you know, that's not just a fuzzy blob, then I'd love to see it, love to hear about it," he said, adding "But I don't think there is."

Tesla undergoes executive overhaul as Musk implements strategy shifts: Report

Elon Musk's wealth is on the rise again. After a significant dip earlier in 2024, his net worth has surged by $37.3 billion in just the past week. This marks his biggest weekly gain since march 2022, right before his acquisition of Twitter.

Musk's net worth up $37.3 bn in biggest weekly gain since pre-Twitter deal

Elon Musk has made significant staff changes at Tesla, letting go of two senior executives and announcing plans for further job cuts. The decision comes in response to decelerating sales and an aggressive price war, resulting in Tesla's first quarterly revenue drop since 2020.

Rebecca Tinucci, the senior director of Tesla's Supercharger business, and Daniel Ho, head of the new vehicles program, have been asked to leave the company by Tuesday, along with their respective teams. This will include approximately 500 employees who work in the Supercharger group.

According to reports, Musk explained in his email to his employees, "Hopefully these actions are making it clear that we need to be absolutely hardcore about headcount and cost reduction. While some on exec staff are taking this seriously, most are not yet doing so."

The precipitous nature of the layoffs has caught many industry officials and analysts off guard, especially after Tesla’s recent plans to open its Supercharger network to other electric vehicle manufacturers.

Tesla's decision to open its network to competing EV manufacturers including GM, Ford and other automakers was applauded by U.S. President Joe Biden and attracted federal subsidies to expand the reach of its North American Charging Standard (NACS) system.

GM and Ford, in separate statements, shared that they are not altering their plans to equip their EVs with connectors that will allow drivers of Chevrolet, Cadillac or Ford brand EVs to recharge at Tesla stations. "We are continuing to monitor the situation regarding changes to the Supercharger team and the potential impacts with no further comments or updates at this time," GM said.

Andres Pinter, co-CEO of Bullet EV Charging Solutions, a supplier to the network, said, “Tesla has already been awarded money under the federal government's NEVI program, he stated, referring to the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure formula program to provide funding to states to deploy EV charging networks…There's no way Mr. Musk would walk away from effectively free money. It may be possible Musk will reconstitute the EV charger team in bigger, badder, more Muskian way."

According to media reports, despite the job cuts, Tesla intends to continue expanding its Supercharger network, although at a slower pace, “with more focus on 100% uptime and expansion of existing locations."

While some industry experts are speculating on the long-term implications of the layoffs, others are confident that Tesla will eventually restructure its EV charger team to make the most of government funding and scale up its charging infrastructure.

Seven large automakers, including Mercedes, GM, Stellantis, Honda, BMW, and Hyundai-Kia formed a joint venture last year called ‘Ionna’ to develop a fast-charging network to compete with the Tesla Supercharger network.

Earlier this month, two other senior leaders, Rohan Patel who led Tesla’s public policy team and battery development chief Drew Baglino, announced their departures. Tesla had also laid off more than 10% of its workforce at the time.

Even after a surge over the past week, Tesla shares are down about 26% for the year. Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein commented, "Tesla is looking to right size its (capital spending) and operating expenses over the next couple of years as the company is in a slower growth phase".

Despite these issues, Tesla has announced plans for new, more affordable vehicle models and a futuristic "robotaxi" equipped with self-driving capabilities. Musk's visit coincides with the Beijing auto show, although Tesla opted not to participate in the event this year. (With inputs from Reuters)

Elon Musk visits China amid trade tensions: Tesla seeks self-driving technology rollout

Elon Musk pushed for China's approval for Tesla to roll out advanced driver-assistance systems in a whirlwind trip to Beijing that ended on Monday, a step that could boost revenues at a time when Tesla is under pressure from Chinese rivals.

His meetings included one with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who praised Tesla's development in China as a successful example of China's economic and trade cooperation though state media did not say if the two had discussed FSD.

Still, the US automaker won a key endorsement that coincided with his trip - from a top Chinese auto association which said Tesla's Model 3 and Y cars were among models found to be compliant with China's data security requirements.

Two separate sources also told Reuters Tesla had reached an agreement with Baidu to use the Chinese tech giant's mapping license for data collection on China's public roads, which they described as a key step for FSD to be introduced in the country.

Tesla shares were last up 7% in premarket trade.

Data security and compliance have been among the reasons why the U.S. electric vehicle maker, which rolled out the most autonomous version of its Autopilot software four years ago, has yet to make FSD fully available in China, its second-largest market globally, despite customer demand.

Chinese regulators had since 2021 required Tesla to store all data collected by its Chinese fleet in Shanghai, leaving the company unable to transfer any back to the United States.

Musk is looking to obtain approval to transfer data collected in the country abroad to train algorithms for its autonomous driving technologies, the person said.

Musk's visit to China, first reported by Reuters, was not flagged publicly and the person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak with media.

The plane that Musk arrived on departed from Beijing Capital Airport at 0517 GMT, according to Chinese flight tracking app Flight Manager and was headed to Anchorage, Alaska.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Musk's departure.

It remains unclear as to what, if any, other regulatory approvals Tesla will need to obtain or what conditions the company may have before it makes FSD fully available in China.

Equity analysts at Wedbush called the surprise visit "a major moment for Tesla".

Rival Chinese automakers and suppliers such as XPeng and Huawei Technologies have been seeking to gain an advantage over Tesla by rolling out similar software.

Hu Xijin, a former editor of state-backed tabloid Global Times who regularly posts in support of China's official position, said on his Weibo account that Tesla was the only foreign-funded automaker to meet China's data compliance requirements and said that this would pave the way for Tesla cars to enter premises owned by government agencies and state-owned firms across China.

"This is not only a breakthrough in China, but also a significant demonstration for the entire world in solving data security issues," he said.

Musk's visit came just over a week after he scrapped a planned trip to India to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing "very heavy Tesla obligations".

Musk had been set on his cancelled India trip to announce $2 billion to $3 billion in new investments, including in a car plant, after India offered lower import taxes on EVs in return under a new policy.

Tesla cars have for years been banned from entering Chinese military complexes over security concerns relating to cameras installed on its vehicles. Its cars have also been turned away from sites holding important political events, such as an annual summer leadership conclave the ruling Communist Party held in 2022.

He Xiaopeng, the CEO of XPeng whose XNGP Advanced Driver Assistance System is similar to FSD, said on his Weibo account he welcomed the entry of the Tesla technology into China.

"Only when we have better products and technologies entering [China], can we provide a better experience to the market and customers and let the market develop in a healthy manner and at a faster pace," he said.

"Let a hundred flowers bloom," he said, echoing a famous line from Chairman Mao Zedong, the founder of modern China.

The improved prospect of FSD entering China comes as Tesla shares have lost almost a third of their value since the start of the year, as concerns have grown about the EV maker's growth trajectory. Last week, Tesla reported its first decline in quarterly revenue since 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic slowed production and deliveries.

Musk said last week that Tesla would introduce new cheaper models using its current EV platforms and production lines and would offer a new "robotaxi" with self-driving technology. He said on X this month that he would unveil the robotaxi on Aug. 8.

China's complicated traffic conditions with more pedestrians and cyclists than in many other markets provide more scenarios that are key for training autonomous driving algorithms at a faster pace, according to industry experts.

"If Musk is able to obtain approval from Beijing to transfer data collected in China abroad this would be a 'game changer' around the acceleration of training its algorithms for its autonomous technology globally," Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said in a note.

Musk said this month that Tesla may make FSD available to customers in China "very soon", in response to a query on X.

Besides meeting Li on the short trip to Beijing, Musk met the organiser of the ongoing Beijing auto show. The chairman of Chinese battery giant CATL Robin Zeng, a key Tesla battery supplier, also visited Musk's hotel on Monday, according to a Reuters witness.

Tesla chief executive Elon Musk on Tuesday (Apr 23) said that the company may be ready to sell its humanoid robot as early as the end of next year.

Humanoid robot and Tesla

The Tesla humanoid robot, called Optimus, is still in the lab. However, speaking to investors on a conference call, Musk on Tuesday (April 23) said that his guess is that Optimus will be able to perform tasks in the factory by the end of this year, reports Reuters.

Musk, referring to his company's artificial intelligence abilities, told investors, "I think Tesla is best positioned of any humanoid robot maker to be able to reach volume production with efficient inference on the robot itself."

His company introduced the first generation of its Optimus robot, called Bumblebee, back in 2022.

Interestingly, Tesla is not the only company developing humanoid robots. As per Reuters, the robots have been in development for several years by Japan's Honda and Hyundai Motor's Boston Dynamics.

However, despite this, Tesla's shares rocketed up more than 11 per cent in after-hours trading after the company vowed to "accelerate" new more affordable autos.

In an internal email, Musk, as reported by Elektrek, wrote: "There is nothing I hate more, but it must be done. This will enable us to be lean, innovative, and hungry for the next growth phase cycle."

The owner of social media platform X, Elon Musk, on Tuesday (April 23) said that they will challenge an Australian injunction which has asked the platform to remove the videos of the church stabbing incident that took place in Sydney. An injunction was secured by Australia's internet watchdog late Monday as per which X is supposed to hide videos which allegedly showed someone allegedly slashing a Sydney bishop in the head during a live-streamed sermon. The pleas of the Australian government to pull down the images were earlier ignored by X and Musk had stated that the company would appeal against the injunction on free speech grounds. Australian PM Albanese calls Musk "arrogant billionaire" Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that Musk is an "arrogant billionaire" who is not able to see the distress caused by the videos. "We'll do what's necessary to take on this arrogant billionaire who thinks he's above the law, but also above common decency," said Albanese, while speaking to public broadcaster ABC. "The idea that someone would go to court for the right to put up violent content on a platform shows how out-of-touch Mr Musk is," he added. A late-night injunction was granted to Australia's eSafety Commission which forced X to remove the church stabbing footage for the next two days as further arguments remained pending. The videos were blocked by X in Australia, however, they are still visible to users in other parts of the world. Safety concerns are escalating as injury rates at SpaceX facilities continue to surpass the industry average for the second consecutive year, a recent analysis by Reuters revealed.

According to data reported to US regulators by the space venture led by entrepreneur Elon Musk, injury rates remained persistently high in 2023, with some facilities witnessing a deterioration compared to the previous year.

Particularly alarming was the manufacturing-and-launch facility located in Brownsville, Texas, where SpaceX reported 5.9 injuries per 100 workers, exceeding both its own 2022 rate of 4.8 injuries and the industry average of 0.8 injuries.

These findings are indicative of the challenges faced by the rocket and satellite company, with at least 600 previously unreported worker injuries documented, including cases of crushed limbs, amputations, serious head injuries, and one fatality.

The newly disclosed safety data by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) highlights a major issue within SpaceX's operations.

Despite repeated requests, the company has not provided comments on the latest injury figures.

Safety experts, however, are raising concerns regarding the implications of these high injury rates, particularly for SpaceX's clients, such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Given NASA's heavy reliance on SpaceX, with contracts coming to about at least $11.8 billion as of 2022, the quality of work delivered by the space venture is under scrutiny.

Reuters cited David Michaels, a former OSHA administrator and current professor at The George Washington University, who noted that elevated injury rates could signify underlying issues with production quality, necessitating attention from NASA.

However, NASA has not issued any statements in response to inquiries regarding SpaceX's safety record.

The analysis conducted by Reuters cited data published by OSHA, which revealed a detailed overview of injury rates across SpaceX facilities.

In 2023, SpaceX reported injuries from eight major facilities, three more than in the previous year, providing a more extensive dataset for evaluation.

Of particular concern was the unit responsible for retrieving rocket boosters in the Pacific Ocean, where the reported injury rate stood at 7.6 injuries per 100 workers, surpassing the industry standard.

Australia's Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services Stephen Jones on Monday (Apr 22) strongly criticised Elon Musk's social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), labelling it a "factory for trolls and misinformation."

This comes as the Australian government pledged to defend against any legal actions X may initiate over the authorities' content removal demands related to a video of last week's Sydney church stabbing.

While Meta complied, X resisted, arguing that the demands exceeded the scope of Australian law and accused the Australian regulator of enforcing "global censorship." It also said it would challenge the order in court.

In a post on X, Elon Musk said: "The Australian censorship commissar is demanding *global* content bans!".

Morning brief: Rockets launched at US-led base in Syria from Iraq; Gaza war updates; and more

The official newspaper of the Chinese military, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), on Friday (Apr 19) accused the United States of “militarising space” by building a spy satellite network with Elon Musk’s SpaceX. This comes after a report by news agency Reuters said that SpaceX was building hundreds of spy satellites for a US intelligence agency.

About the Starshield satellite network

A report by Reuters, last month, citing five sources familiar with the programme said SpaceX’s Starshield business unit is building a network of hundreds of spy satellites under a $1.8 billion classified contract signed in 2021 with the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), an American intelligence agency which manages spy satellites.

Days after the report was published, PLA’s newspaper on the Chinese social media platform Weibo said that the reported programme exposed Washington’s “shamelessness and double standards” as the US has previously accused Chinese tech companies of threatening United States security.

It added, “We urge U.S. companies to not help a villain do evil.” The post on Chinese social media also warned all countries to be “vigilant and protect against new and even bigger security threats created by the U.S. government.”

Sources told Reuters that if successful, it would significantly advance the ability of the US government and military to spot potential targets “almost anywhere on the globe.”

“No one can hide,” said one of the sources speaking about the network’s capabilities. As per the reported plan, SpaceX would set up a “powerful new spy system with hundreds of satellites bearing Earth-imaging capabilities that can operate as a swarm in low orbits.”

What did the PLA say?

PLA Daily said that the Starshield could potentially “warn and intercept missiles and control unmanned combat platforms remotely,” and could play “an extremely important role on the battlefield,” as quoted by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

The official newspaper of the Chinese military in its commentary criticises the US for “militarising the transformation and development of low-orbit satellites” and said by doing so Washington has highlighted its ambition to “seize orbital resources and pursue space hegemony”.

The paper noted that such a system posed “huge challenges to information and space asset security to other countries”.

The PLA Daily also said that in recent conflicts the US has relied on its “space military capabilities” to intervene and help other countries by providing them with information.

This could be a reference to how Musk provided the Starlink internet service to Ukraine in the early stages of the Russian invasion, but since last year the US government has been covering the costs for it.

More recently, as per SCMP, Starlink was also given a licence to operate in Israel and parts of the Gaza Strip amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

China accuses US of ‘militarising space’ using Musk’s satellite network

Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk postponed his trip to India to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing obligations at his Tesla automaker.

The Tesla CEO said he aimed to reschedule the visit for later this year.

"Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year," Musk posted on his X account.

Musk’s trip was to have included the announcement of plans for the electric vehicle (EV) maker to enter the South Asian market, according to reports.

Tesla could have used the India announcement to try to reassure investors after months of share-price declines and the news on April 15 that it would lay off more than 10 per cent of its global workforce.

Tesla has been lobbying the Indian government for months to reduce import taxes on electric vehicles, even as it considers setting up a factory in the country.

India’s new EV policy

India recently introduced a new EV policy, cutting import taxes to 15 per cent from the former 100 per cent for some models. This comes with the expectation that the manufacturer invests a minimum of $500 million and establishes a factory.

Earlier reports by Reuters indicated that Tesla officials were set to visit India this month to identify locations for a manufacturing plant, requiring an investment of approximately $2 billion.

Additionally, Tesla has initiated the production of right-hand drive cars at its German facility, targeting exports to India later this year.

Tesla's expansion into the Indian market comes at a time when demand for electric vehicles is slowing in its primary markets, the US and China, due to increasing competition from Chinese automakers.

Tesla recently reported a decline in first-quarter deliveries, falling short of analyst expectations.

Firmly opposing the proposed ban of TikTok in the US, Elon Musk argued that it suppresses freedom of speech and expression and goes against America's moral values and ethics.

Musk’s statement comes after the House passed the obstacle on the procedural aspect, which will enable a formal vote that might be conducted on the 6th of May, starting, at the latest, on Saturday, on the legislative package that will be used to deliver $95 billion to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

Why House is considering a ban on TikTok

The Lawmakers worry that TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, could be used by the Chinese government to collect user data or spread propaganda. They fear this data could be used for spying or to manipulate American public opinion.

The House approved a resolution, which got support and was aimed to stop the functioning of TikTok in the US.
