Acknowledging that the handwriting on some 300,000 envelopes containing cast ballots from advance voting is "unreadable", Pongsatorn during the interview said the issue must be investigated by the country's election body so that it can be ascertained whether the ballots can be included in the vote count or not.&nbsp;

"These envelopes may be incomplete ... missing the province, district or election code. Sorting officials aren't sure where to send them. It doesn't necessarily mean they aren't readable," Pongsatorn said.

<h2>What is unreadable on the envelopes?&nbsp;</h2>

The envelopes consist of details of provinces, districts and constituencies. Along with it, it also comprises of five-digit election codes used for sorting and delivery of the ballots.

<h2>Who writes the details on the envelopes?</h2>

The details are written by the election officials at the voting stations during the early voting. The unreadability of the details on the envelopes is attributed to human error by committee members, as per Thailand Post.&nbsp;However, it is pertinent to note that this has nothing to do with Thailand Post as this process comes under the ambit of the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT).

After the sorting process is done, the ballots are sent to about 400 districts. But the illegible handwriting made the sorting process challenging. Thailand Post had 1,000 of its staff members working round the clock to accelerate the sorting process.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Picharn Chaopattanawong, deputy leader of the Move Forward Party, on Friday condemned the Election Commission for not clarifying on the issue of these problematic&nbsp;votes.&nbsp;He urged the election body to take action to resolve the issue.&nbsp;

According to the news agency AFP, the leader will emulate a historical ritual that the Ottoman Sultans performed before they led their men off to war. The ritual will take place just a day before the contentious leader braces for the upcoming parliamentary and presidential ballot opposite an "energised or united opposition".

<h2>The importance of Hagia Sophia</h2>

Once the world's largest Byzantine cathedral, the Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque by the Ottomans but became a museum after the establishment of a secular Turkey by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923.

In 2020, Erdogan's decision to convert the museum back into a mosque helped solidify his status as a hero among his religious supporters.

However, the decision also contributed to growing concerns from the Western world about his leadership.

During a rally in Istanbul on Saturday, Erdogan boasted, "The entire West got mad - but I did it."&nbsp;

His statement highlights his focus on religious themes and cultural conflicts, which he has previously used to galvanise his conservative and nationalist base.

Nevertheless, the 69-year as per AFP has never "faced a more energised or united opposition".

<h2>Erdogan's opposition</h2>

Leading the opposition against the Turkish leader is retired civil servant Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who has set up an alliance of six parties. Putting aside their political and cultural differences, these six parties have reportedly joined forces for the "lone task" of pushing Erdogan out.

They also have the official backing of Turkey's primary pro-Kurdish party, which represents around10 per cent of the total votes.

However, this time the math is not in his favour. Recent polls show that the secular opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu is edging ahead of Erdogan in Sunday's presidential ballot.&nbsp;

They reportedly show challenger Kilicdaroglu possessing a slight advantage and close to breaking the 50-per cent threshold needed to avoid a runoff on May 28.

Kilicdaroglu's allegations came hours after Third-party candidate Muharrem Ince dropped out from the presidential elections. Withdrawing his candidacy just days before the elections, on Thursday, Ince said: "I am doing this for my country."&nbsp;

Taking to Twitter, Kilicdaroglu addressed "Russian friends" and said, "You are behind the montages, conspiracies, deep fakes and tapes that were exposed in this country yesterday." He did not provide any details.

In recent months, even as Russia faces criticism from various nations, Moscow and Ankara have maintained close ties. Erdogan has also, at times, played the role of a mediator, talking to both Russia and Ukraine.

In recent days, disinformation has added a dark note to the pivotal elections that on Sunday will decide if Erdogan — who has been Turkey's President since 2014 — will remain in power.

Recently, at a huge rally, Recep Tayyip Erdogan played a 14-second clip which allegedly was proof that his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu has formed a union with "terrorists"&nbsp;and outlawed Kurdish militants. The clip was played at the rally and beamed live on TV, following which challenger Kilicdaroglu had fumed: "How can a person sitting in the president's chair stoop this low."

Turkey is preparing for its general election, which might determine the political future of Erdogan, the country's de facto leader. As the election draws closer to the main event, Erdogan will face the greatest challenge of his 20-year reign because of a candidate who says his party has proof of Russian election meddling.

Millions will head to the polls next week to vote in Turkey's presidential and parliamentary elections, which observers expect will provide the toughest test to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's 20-year stronghold.

Questions are being raised about Thailand Election Commission’s competency appointed under military rule after a monitoring group alleged widespread discrepancy in early voting.

Thailand will go to polls on May 14 as all eyes are on the ruling military-backed government that has been in power for nine years after it ousted an elected government in 2014.

The monitoring group—The People’s Network to Monitor Elections, an alliance of non-governmental organisations—claimed that it received about 300 complaints during Sunday’s early voting, including missing names, votes cast by the wrong people, mistakes with mailed ballots and incomplete lists of candidates at polling stations.

The poll body said it received 592 complaints, with Bangkok recording about 100. It said that investigations are underway and promised not to repeat the same mistakes on election day.

Yingcheep Atchanont, executive director of NGO iLaw, which is part of the monitoring group, said mistakes were not significant but showed a lack of understanding or training by some election personnel on the ground.

“They don’t understand the system so they only do what they understand,” Yingcheep told Reuters news agency, adding many complaints were over the same issues.

“I think in these cases they’re making honest mistakes.”

Meanwhile, an online petition demanding the ouster of the poll body soared a million, with social media replete with hashtags like “what is the point of having the EC” and another calling for the imprisonment of all the seven election commissioners. Many even questioned the commission's ability to deliver a fair and accurate result.

The commissioners were chosen in 2018 by institutions appointed by the junta after a 2014 coup by former army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha, who has been in power ever since.

This is not the first time that the poll body has come under intense scrutiny. In the last election in 2019, there were widespread allegations of manipulation and negligence, after it delayed the official result by more than a month and it changed&nbsp;its formula&nbsp;for awarding party-list seats.

The commission at the time denied wrongdoing and said it needed time to allow recounts, disqualifications and by-elections.

Thailand is witnessing a two-way fight between the &nbsp;Palang Pracharat party, which is a coalition between the army and royalist establishment, against an opposition movement that has won every election in the past two decades and was removed from office three times.

Opinion polls last week showed two opposition parties with&nbsp;significant leads, according to Reuters news agency.

Thailand will go to polls on May 14 as all eyes are on the ruling military-backed government that has been in power for nine years after it ousted an elected government in 2014. The monitoring group—The People’s Network to Monitor Elections, an alliance of non-governmental organisations—claimed that it received about 300 complaints during Sunday’s early voting, including missing names, votes cast by the wrong people, mistakes with mailed ballots and incomplete lists of candidates at polling stations. The poll body said it received 592 complaints, with Bangkok recording about 100. It said that investigations are underway and promised not to repeat the same mistakes on election day. Yingcheep Atchanont, executive director of NGO iLaw, which is part of the monitoring group, said mistakes were not significant but showed a lack of understanding or training by some election personnel on the ground. “They don’t understand the system so they only do what they understand,” Yingcheep told Reuters news agency, adding many complaints were over the same issues. “I think in these cases they’re making honest mistakes.” Meanwhile, an online petition demanding the ouster of the poll body soared a million, with social media replete with hashtags like “what is the point of having the EC” and another calling for the imprisonment of all the seven election commissioners. Many even questioned the commission's ability to deliver a fair and accurate result. The commissioners were chosen in 2018 by institutions appointed by the junta after a 2014 coup by former army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha, who has been in power ever since. This is not the first time that the poll body has come under intense scrutiny. In the last election in 2019, there were widespread allegations of manipulation and negligence, after it delayed the official result by more than a month and it changed its formula for awarding party-list seats. The commission at the time denied wrongdoing and said it needed time to allow recounts, disqualifications and by-elections. Thailand is witnessing a two-way fight between the Palang Pracharat party, which is a coalition between the army and royalist establishment, against an opposition movement that has won every election in the past two decades and was removed from office three times. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who has the support of a six-party opposition alliance, said that if he comes into power, he will bring democracy and freedom to the country.

"The youth want democracy. They don't want the police to come to their doors early in the morning just because they tweeted,” he said while speaking to BBC.

Kilicdaroglu is the main rival of Erdogan in elections scheduled on May 14 and has clinched a narrow lead in the opinion polls. Presently, the citizens of Turkey can be imprisoned for "insulting the president" in Turkey.

"I am telling young people they can criticise me freely. I will make sure they have this right," announced the 74-year-old leader, who heads the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP).

Some supporters of Kilicdaroglu fear for his safety but the leader says that it comes with the path he has chosen in life.

"Being in politics in Turkey means choosing a life with risks. I will walk my path whatever Erdogan and his allies do. They can't put me off. They can't scare me. I made a promise to this nation,” Kilicdaroglu said.

Earlier, President Erdogan mocked his opponent stating that he "couldn't even herd a sheep".

Speaking about what would happen if Erdogan is defeated in the elections, Kilicdaroglu said, "We will retire him, and send him to his corner. He will step back quietly. No one should have any concerns about it."

Media reports suggest that the if the Turkish leader faces defeat, he may dispute the result. Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu had already warned the vote will be "a coup attempt by the West".

Kilicdaroglu said that the opposition parties will remain vigilant, and will neither trust the president, "nor his Supreme Election Council nor his judges".

"By having more than one observer in all the polling stations, we want to ensure that votes are cast correctly, securely, and the counting is done properly. We have been taking precautions to achieve this, working hard for a year and a half,” he added.

Kilicdaroglu has also been witnessing a surge in support from the citizens. Oguz, aged 15, while participating in his rally said, "He is a good person, and he sees the future positively. If he becomes president our economy will rise up, and we will rise up."

"We want to become a part of the civilised world. We want free media and complete judicial independence. Erdogan does not think that way. He wants to be more authoritarian. The difference between us and Erdogan is the difference between black and white,” he added.

A series of raids are being conducted by the IT department in poll-bound Karnataka for the last few weeks.&nbsp;

Two men were recently caught by the Bengaluru Police with unaccounted cash worth Rs 10 million. The police recovered the case from an auto which was standing near the City Market area on April 13.

Meanwhile, last month, raids were conducted by the IT department at the office of private real estate developer Ankita Builders and the residence of its owner Narayan Acharya in Hubballi.

The step was taken a day after raids were conducted by the Income Tax department at former Congress leader Gangadhar Gowda's two residential premises and an educational institution located in Belthangady of Dakshina Kannada.&nbsp;

The educational institution is owned by Ranjan Gowda, son of Gangadhar Gowda.&nbsp;

Gowda joined Congress in 2018 after quitting the BJP. Recently, he announced his withdrawal from politics after he was denied a ticket in the Karnataka Assembly elections.&nbsp;

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General &nbsp;Antonio Guterres was sending an envoy to Sudan amid the "unprecedented" situation in the conflict-torn country, his spokesperson said on Sunday (April 30), the news agency AFP reported early Monday. UN emergency relief coordinator Martin Griffiths would serve as the envoy. Announcing Griffiths' deployment, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that the envoy would travel to the region immediately. "The scale and speed of what is unfolding is unprecedented in Sudan," Dujarric said in a statement, adding the UN was extremely concerned.&nbsp;
