There is also an issue of disparity in development. It has been often seen that there tends to be huge gap in wealth, health and unemployment rate between regions that are densely populated (Sumatra, Java) and those away from economic centres and are sparsely populated (Maluku, Papua and more). Equitable development is something Indonesia continues to struggle with.

Milei, a brash former TV pundit likened to Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro, posted a shock win in August open primaries, though Massa and Bullrich were not far behind and it may prove a close race. Pollsters expect no outright winner.

A candidate needs over 45% of the vote or 40% and a 10-point lead to avoid a second round run-off, which would be held on Nov. 19. Voting on Sunday will end around 6:00 pm&nbsp;(2100 GMT) and the first results are expected at 9:00 pm&nbsp;(00:00 GMT).

Whoever wins will have to deal with an economy on life support: central bank reserves are empty, recession is expected after a major drought, and a $44 billion programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is wobbling.

Amid this crisis, Milei has risen abruptly, pledging shock therapy to fix the economy including dollarising, shutting the central bank, reducing the size of government drastically and privatising state entities.

"He is the only one who understands the situation in the country and understands how to save it," said Buenos Aires student Nicolas Mercado, 22.

Massa, current economy chief, is in the running despite overseeing inflation hitting triple digits for the first time since 1991. He has pledged to cut the fiscal deficit, stick with the peso and defend the Peronist social welfare safety net.

"Massa represents certain traditional guarantees with which I was raised: public health, state education, which is what I want to defend with my vote," said astrologer Flavia Vázquez.

Bullrich, a former security minister who is popular in business circles, has seen her support diluted by the unexpected emergence of Milei. Pollsters see her as the most likely of the top three runners to miss out on a second round.

Guardian quoted an unnamed former minister who said that with the possibility of Labour Party forming a government, prospects for Hunt were not attractive.

“Barring a miracle [of the Tories winning and forming another government], I can’t see Jeremy wanting to be in opposition under a new leader. And if he loses, he will be the biggest scalp on election night. That is not a departure anyone would want. People in Surrey are saying he will not stand,” the former minister said.

In case Hunt stands down, it would throw up a question about whether he can remain chancellor as elections approach.

Before entering politics, Hunt was a successful businessman. He would expect an elevation to the House of Lords if he leaves the Commons. This would allow him to retain a political role along with his commercial interests.

“Of course Jeremy cannot say so now, but I think he won’t stand. It is not uncommon to pull out having said you will stand, citing changes of circumstances. Short of turning things round and winning, and him remaining chancellor, which is not exactly likely, there is nothing in it for him,” said another former minister from the Conservative Party as quoted by The Guardian.

The High-level committee, which was recently constituted to examine the practicability of holding simultaneous elections, chaired by former president Ram Nath Kovind, held its very first meeting on Saturday (September 23).

As per a statement, the panel came to a conclusion to invite political parties and the Law Commission, to seek their views on holding synchronised polls in the country.

Earlier this month, the government had instructed the eight-member "high-level" panel to examine and make recommendations at the earliest on the issue of holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, municipalities and panchayats.

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah, Minister of State (Independent Charge) from the Ministry of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, former Rajya Sabha leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Chairman of the 15th Finance Commission NK Singh, former Lok Sabha Secretary General Subhash Kashyap, former Chief Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari attended the meeting. Senior Advocate Harish Salve joined the meeting virtually.

Congress leader in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, was not present in the meeting, the statement noted.

After being named as a member of the panel, Chowdhury had written to Shah, "declining to serve on the committee".

As per a statement, the panel came to a conclusion to invite political parties and the Law Commission, to seek their views on holding synchronised polls in the country. Earlier this month, the government had instructed the eight-member "high-level" panel to examine and make recommendations at the earliest on the issue of holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, municipalities and panchayats. Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah, Minister of State (Independent Charge) from the Ministry of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, former Rajya Sabha leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Chairman of the 15th Finance Commission NK Singh, former Lok Sabha Secretary General Subhash Kashyap, former Chief Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari attended the meeting.
