<p>Rabbits—the furry widely loved and petted animals—have turned out to be a nuisance for a region in New Zealand that is employing every trick&nbsp;in its trade to eliminate the long-eared animal from the face of their part of the earth.</p>

<p>First introduced in the 1840s for both food and sport, this furry animal has slowly and gradually turned into an invasive creature, threatening the bio-diversity and agriculture of the southern region of Central Otago.</p>

<p>To tackle the menace, the local administration introduced the Central Otago Great Easter Bunny Hunt in the 1990s—an annual bunny hunt event where the landowners have a legal obligation to control them.</p>

<p>However, the central government banned the event for this year due to fire risks and health and safety concerns.</p>

<p>But this hasn’t stopped the rural folks from carrying on with their long tradition as they fear that a lack of alternatives to killing rabbits will lead to a further explosion of the population.</p>

<p>Now, the Otago council is waiting for approval from the government to spread Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV)—a sure-shot viral killer.</p>

<p>This strain of the virus was first imported and introduced illegally to New Zealand in 1997, devastating rabbit populations at the time. Another version from Korea was later legally imported and released in early 2018. However, rabbits have become increasingly immune over time.</p>

<p>Now, local councillors are investigating if it is viable to remove RHDV from the biosecurity’s “unwanted organism list”, which could pave the way for its reintroduction.</p>

<p>In parts of the South Island, the boom is reaching “plague” proportions, a spokesperson for Otago Regional Council (ORC) told the Guardian on Wednesday.</p>

<p>New Zealand’s ministry of primary industry estimates that rabbits cost the country an estimated NZ$50 million (US$31m) in lost production, and a further $25m in direct pest control each year.</p>

<p>“Densities of up to 16 rabbits per square kilometre have been logged in some places during ORC night-count monitoring,” the council said in a statement.</p>

<p>“Rabbits have an impact on pasture and crops with just 10 rabbits devouring the equivalent of what one sheep requires.”</p>

<p>"Indications suggest that the bus was overloaded," he said. Buses in&nbsp;Zimbabwe&nbsp;typically have an average capacity of 60 to 75 passengers.</p>

<p>"As church people they should lead by example but instead they were travelling at night which we always discourage," Nyathi said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Police said the bus was travelling from southeastern Chimanimani town to Masvingo, 280 kilometres (175 miles) away, and that the crash occurred near Chipinge town.</p>

<p>A local lawmaker Joshua Sacco who visited the scene of the crash said the bus rolled several times down the steep slope and the roof was ripped off.</p>

<p>"Passengers were thrown out. There were both dead bodies and injured passengers scattered at the scene after they were thrown off the bus," Sacco told AFP on the phone.</p>

<p>He described grim scenes with people "groaning in pain", and children among the dead, but did not have a number for the child victims.</p>

<p>Traffic accidents are common in&nbsp;Zimbabwe&nbsp;and particularly during public holidays, when the potholed roads are often busy.</p>

<p>Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo, has requested people to observe a two-minute silence at 8.45 am on Wednesday in memory of the victims of the Easter Sunday attacks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nine suicide bombers belonging to local Islamist extremist group National Thawheed Jamaat (NTJ) linked to ISIS carried out a series of devastating blasts that tore through three churches and as many luxury hotels on April 21, 2019, killing 258 people, including 11 Indians.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cardinal Ranjith said that two main memorial services would be held at the St Anthony's Church in Colombo and the St Sebastian's Church in Negombo, the two of the three churches devastated by the suicide attacks two years ago.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cardinal Ranjith, who will be presiding the memorial service at the St Anthony's Church, said that it was at 8.45 am on April 21, 2019 when the first suicide bomber targeted a church.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The police said there will be a special security cover to all churches throughout the island nation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"All provincial police stations have been directed to provide appropriate security tomorrow during the memorial events," police spokesman senior deputy inspector general Ajith Rohana said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka (MCSL) has also called upon all Sri Lankans to support and join the call of the Archbishop of Colombo in observing the two-minute silence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We also call upon Muslims to make supplications for these victims in this holy month of Ramadan," said the MCSL statement issued by Vice President Hilmy Ahamed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It also urged the Government to hasten a thorough investigation on the Easter Sunday attacks and bring the real perpetrators to justice without relying on anecdotal evidence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The Muslim community condemns the suicide bombers as Islam totally forbids killing of innocents even during a war; hence the Muslim community denied an Islamic funeral for the suicide bombers,” the statement added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The MCSL said the Muslim community has been targeted by some in a hate campaign for the carnage of a few, who called themselves Muslims.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cardinal Ranjith has vowed to take drastic action if the real culprits were not dealt with by the second anniversary of the attacks on April 21.&nbsp;</p>

Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo, has requested people to observe a two-minute silence at 8.45 am on Wednesday in memory of the victims of the Easter Sunday attacks. Nine suicide bombers belonging to local Islamist extremist group National Thawheed Jamaat (NTJ) linked to ISIS carried out a series of devastating blasts that tore through three churches and as many luxury hotels on April 21, 2019, killing 258 people, including 11 Indians. Cardinal Ranjith said that two main memorial services would be held at the St Anthony's Church in Colombo and the St Sebastian's Church in Negombo, the two of the three churches devastated by the suicide attacks two years ago. Cardinal Ranjith, who will be presiding the memorial service at the St Anthony's Church, said that it was at 8.45 am on April 21, 2019 when the first suicide bomber targeted a church. The police said there will be a special security cover to all churches throughout the island nation. "All provincial police stations have been directed to provide appropriate security tomorrow during the memorial events," police spokesman senior deputy inspector general Ajith Rohana said. The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka (MCSL) has also called upon all Sri Lankans to support and join the call of the Archbishop of Colombo in observing the two-minute silence. "We also call upon Muslims to make supplications for these victims in this holy month of Ramadan," said the MCSL statement issued by Vice President Hilmy Ahamed. It also urged the Government to hasten a thorough investigation on the Easter Sunday attacks and bring the real perpetrators to justice without relying on anecdotal evidence. "The Muslim community condemns the suicide bombers as Islam totally forbids killing of innocents even during a war; hence the Muslim community denied an Islamic funeral for the suicide bombers,” the statement added. The MCSL said the Muslim community has been targeted by some in a hate campaign for the carnage of a few, who called themselves Muslims. Cardinal Ranjith has vowed to take drastic action if the real culprits were not dealt with by the second anniversary of the attacks on April 21.

<p>They also seized documents describing "several plans for violent action", others referring to the Islamic State group and Nazism, and a map of a church near her home, the PNAT said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>France remains on its highest terror alert following massacres on its territory carried out by Islamist radicals from 2015 and also a spate of attacks in late 2020.</p>

<p>These included the beheading of Paty by a teenager originating from Russia's southern region of Chechnya and also the October 29 knife attack on a church in the southern city of Nice by a migrant from Tunisia that left three people dead.</p>

<p>On Sunday (April 5), the world celebrated Easter, a festival commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. But for many in Colombo, the festivities were marked with grief. It's been two years since the Easter bombings.</p>

<p>On 21st April, 2019, Sri Lankans woke up to the news of a terror attack. A little before 10 am, a blast ripped through St Anthony's Church in Colombo. Worshippers attending easter mass were targeted. Minutes later another place of worship about 30 kilometers away was hit.</p>

<p>A blast took place at St Sebastian Church in Negombo. And then, it was the Zeon Church in Baticaloa. Terror also struck three luxury hotels in Colombo. The Shangri La, The Cinnamon Grand, and the Kingsbury Hotel.</p>

<p>At least 35 foreigners were killed in the attacks on these hotels. Hours later, came the seventh explosion.</p>

<p>A hotel near the national zoo in the Dehiwala area, a Colombo suburb was attacked. And an eighth blast hit the suburb of Orugodawatta in the North of Colombo.</p>

<p>Eight attacks in just over 6 hours. As the Sri Lankan govt sprung to action, our team travelled to Colombo to find out what had happened.</p>

<p>But little did we know that the crisis was far from over.</p>

<p>Another bomb went off at St Anthony's Church as our correspondent Siddhant Sibal was reporting just a few blocks away.</p>

<p>With the security apparatus clearly having failed, the Sri Lankan police launched a crackdown to control the damage. Raids were carried out, suspects were detained.</p>

<p>The initial probe found the attacks to be the work of religious extremists. All associated with the National Thowheed Jamath.</p>

<p>But the arrests did little to allay the fears. Sri Lanka remained in a state of emergency. On the streets of Colombo, the fear of another attack persisted for days.</p>

<p>Adding to these fears, was the ongoing war of words between the politicians.</p>

<p>The Sri Lankan government was split. The prime minister blamed the president for the security failure. The president said he had no clue.</p>

<p>As politics took precedence over national security, WION sought some answers from Ranil Wickremesinghe within days of the blasts.</p>

<p>2019 Easter massacre exposed the faultlines -- in Sri Lanka's politics. The intelligence was there, the information was there but the disaster could not be averted.</p>

<p>Even today politics seems to be stalling the judicial process. Last month, a presidential commission report was released. It blames the former president &amp; the former prime minister for failing to act despite intel inputs.</p>

<p>The exercise has become more about settling political scores as the 200 people who have been arrested in the case wait for their turn to face justice...</p>
