NASA on Wednesday (Dec 18) announced that astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, who have been stuck in space for more than 180 days now, will now stay on the International Space Station (ISS) at least till March 2025.

Their return has been delayed many times now. Previously, they were scheduled to fly back in February 2025.

However, the agency now said that Williams and Willmore would now return to Earth along with astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov after the four-member Crew-10 mission reaches the space station.

"The agency’s SpaceX Crew-9 mission with NASA astronauts Nick Hague, Suni Williams, Butch Wilmore, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov will return to Earth following the arrival of Crew-10 to the orbital laboratory," NASA said in a statement.

"NASA’s SpaceX Crew-10 now is targeting no earlier than late March 2025 to launch four crew members to the International Space Station," the agency stated.

They further added, "Known as a handover period, it allows Crew-9 to share any lessons learned with the newly arrived crew and support a better transition for ongoing science and maintenance at the complex."

Sunita Williams and her condition in space

William, 58, and Wilmore, 61, have been stuck in space for more than six months now. They got to the ISS on the Boeing Starliner spacecraft.

Initially, the craft was meant to depart for home on June 26. However, it faced several glitches, including leaks in the propulsion system and some of its thrusters shutting down, before reaching the ISS.

Despite making several attempts, NASA and Boeing could not trust it to bring the astronauts back safely to Earth.

Why was it delayed?

The agency said the launch was delayed to give teams time to complete processing on a new Dragon spacecraft for the mission. "The new spacecraft is set to arrive at the company’s processing facility in Florida in early January."

Steve Stich, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Programme, said, "Fabrication, assembly, testing, and final integration of a new spacecraft is a painstaking endeavour that requires great attention to detail. We appreciate the hard work by the SpaceX team to expand the Dragon fleet in support of our missions and the flexibility of the station program and expedition crews as we work together to complete the new capsule’s readiness for flight.”

Researchers from the United States, France and Germany have discovered that Earth’s natural satellite may have been formed as early as 4.53 billion years ago. This estimate derived from the new analysis is hundreds of millions of years earlier than previous ones.

This discovery may help in answering other questions about the Moon like why it has less metal compared to Earth and why it has fewer big impact basins than expected. The research can also provide better insights into the evolution and history of our own planet, according to the team led by geologist Francis Nimmo of the University of California Santa Cruz.

Earlier, it was believed that the Moon was formed after a large object, roughly the size of Mars, struck the Earth, while it was still in its formation stages about 4.35 billion years ago. However, the new research suggests it was formed much earlier and then experienced a dramatic “re-melting” at the time which was assumed for its creation.

According to the research, this re-melting event occurred due to the Earth’s and Moon’s gravitational pull tugging at each other, called a tidal force, which caused it to stretch and squish and warm the Moon drastically due to friction.

The study also explains the existence of zircon crystals, a mineral found on lunar rocks during the Apollo mission. The age of this mineral can be determined by observing the ratio of uranium to lead.

The zircon crystals have been dated significantly older than the age of the Moon. While one crystal has been measured to be 4.46 billion years old, another was calculated to have formed 4.51 billion years ago.

The melting process altered the lunar surface, causing the metals to sink below and hiding the Moon’s real age, according to the study that was published in the journal Nature. This would imply that our planet has been with its natural satellite for almost its entire lifespan as it is estimated to have formed 4.54 billion years ago.

The Moon may be much older than we thought, new study suggests

New Delhi, India
Scientists have warned that a devastating solar superflare is overdue on Earth, which can be more powerful than billions of atomic bombs when it hits the planet.
The most accurate study done so far has explained that these superflares can wipe out satellites and power grids.
As per the researchers, these disastrous events happen to occur once every 100 years and not once every 1,000 to 10,000 as was believed earlier.
The study has hinted that Earth is likely to be hit by a solar flare which will release at least one octillion joules of energy.

This can be 100 times stronger than the 1859 Carrington Event in which the telegraph network collapsed and the sheets of paper lying in offices were also ignited.
If Earth is hit by such a powerful event, it can be more devastating because of the world's increased dependence on satellite communication networks.
The superflare would impact in such a way that the power grids would be overloaded, satellites would be knocked out of orbit, global communication networks would be silenced and aircraft would be grounded around the world.
The Max Planck Institute's co-author Dr Natalie Krivova said, "The new data are a stark reminder that even the most extreme solar events are part of the sun's natural repertoire."

Scientists predict how often superflares occur

Since modern observation records of the radiation of the sun have been available since the space age began, it has been difficult to predict how often these superflares occur.
An international team of researchers, headed by the Max Planck Institute (MPI), are trying to find answers in the stars.

Director of the MPI and co-author of the study Dr Sami Solanki said, "We cannot observe the sun over thousands of years. Instead, however, we can monitor the behaviour of thousands of stars very similar to the sun over short periods of time."
The data was recorded by scientists from 56,450 Earth-like stars which were observed by NASA's Kepler telescope between 2009 and 2014.
In the observation, the researchers saw 2,889 superflares on 2,527 observed stars and concluded that a superflare occurs roughly once every century.
MPS first author Dr Valeriy Vasilyev said, "We were very surprised that sun-like stars are prone to such frequent superflares."

A unique astronomical event will take place on December 7 when Earth will align itself between Jupiter and the Sun.

Due to this alignment, the gas giant will remain visible all through the night and the skywatchers will get a rare chance to see the biggest planet of our solar system.

As per the experts, Jupiter will be 611 million kilometres or 380 million miles away from Earth at approximately 5:00 am (local time) on December 6.

This closeness between the two planets will guarantee that Jupiter will shine its brightest and give skywatchers the best viewing opportunity to take a look at its atmospheric belts and Galilean moons.

Here's how you can spot Jupiter

On December 7, the sky-gazers should try to look east-northeast close to the constellation Taurus. Jupiter is expected to rise at sunset and set at sunrise.

Using a telescope, people can look at the planet's intricate cloud bands and spot its four largest moons which are Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.

During this celestial alignment, the sunlight will get reflected from Jupiter and take nearly 34 minutes to reach Earth. It will even be visible to the stargazers across India.

As per Forbes, the faster orbit of Earth will momentarily place it between the Sun and Jupiter.

Eventually, 100 per cent of the disc of Jupiter will be visible. This means Jupiter will be in opposition to the Earth and will become extremely bright.

Here's what is 'full' Jupiter

A full Jupiter means the planet's opposition to the Earth because the Sun fully illuminates its sun-facing side.

From Earth, people can see the sun-facing side of Jupiter and much similar to a full moon, 50 per cent of the moon remains always lit by the Sun.

During this celestial alignment, the sunlight will get reflected from Jupiter and take nearly 34 minutes to reach Earth. It will even be visible to the stargazers across India. As per Forbes, the faster orbit of Earth will momentarily place it between the Sun and Jupiter. Also Read: Coming soon! Click a space selfie with Earth photobombing you Eventually, 100 per cent of the disc of Jupiter will be visible. This means Jupiter will be in opposition to the Earth and will become extremely bright. Here's what is 'full' Jupiter A full Jupiter means the planet's opposition to the Earth because the Sun fully illuminates its sun-facing side. From Earth, people can see the sun-facing side of Jupiter and much similar to a full moon, 50 per cent of the moon remains always lit by the Sun. (With inputs from agencies)

Earth is set to align between Jupiter and Sun in rare astronomical event on Dec 7

Earth now officially has two moons after its gravity caught an asteroid. Our planet captured asteroid 2024 PT5 on Sunday, September 29, which has now become our mini-moon. However, do you know that this is not the first time Earth has had a mini-moon?

The asteroid was discovered on August 7 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). Carlos and Raúl de la Fuente Marcos, researchers at Spain’s Universidad Complutense de Madrid, were the first to spot it and published their findings in Research Notes of the AAS.

These space rocks regularly travel around the sun like other asteroids. But when they come near Earth, sometimes the planet's gravity pulls them in. It is definitely a rare event, however, not the first.

Other mini-moons

The two astronomers say in their paper that our planet has had a mini-moon previously as well. The first such recorded event happened in 1981. A cosmic body, called 2022 NX1, was temporarily captured by Earth's gravity. The mini-moon returned in 2022. Both times, it stayed only for a short period of time. It will return to Earth in 2051.

Another short-lived mini-moon, as per the authors, was 1991 VG. It was captured for a short time in 1992 February during a flyby. Both of the above never completed a full revolution of Earth.

However, in 2006 we had a mini-moon that stayed with us for a full year. Asteroid 2006 RH120 remained gravitationally bound to Earth until July 2007 after getting caught in July 2006.

Another asteroid that stayed with us for many years was 2020 CD3. It remained in orbit for years and escaped early in May 2020.

Asteroid 2024 PT5

Our latest mini-moon is similar to the 2022 NX1. It will not complete a full orbit of Earth and will remain with us only for a few days before flying away on November 25. 2024 PT5 lives in the Arjuna asteroid belt. Space rocks living in this region follow orbits similar to Earth’s, which is about 93 million miles from the sun.

Some of the objects from the Arjuna asteroid belt can approach Earth at an extremely close range of around 2.8 million miles.

It is not possible to see the mini-moon since it is too small and dim. Amateur telescopes and binoculars are not going to be enough to see it. Our Moon is about 2,159 miles in diameter, while the new entrant is believed to be just 37 feet wide.

Scientists recently discovered the fossilised remains of a giant “terror bird" in South America’s Tatacoa Desert which has shifted focus on the formidable predator from the Phorusrhacid family.

In the new study, it was found that these giant meat-eating Phorusrhacid birds, also known as “terror birds”, were among the most impressive predators who ever roamed on the Earth.

As per the researchers, these flightless birds existed from 60 million to 2 million years ago in South America.

These birds were up to 10 feet tall and had massive and hooked beaks. The legs were really strong and good for running. The environment was dominated by terror birds as they hunted small and mid-sized animals.

The birds were able to sprint at high speeds and chase their prey while using their powerful beaks to deliver lethal strikes.

According to some scientists, the birds sometimes also hunted in packs. They ruled for millions of years and filled the gaps which were left by the extinction of the dinosaurs.

The leg bone, which was a relic from the Miocene epoch that was dating back around 12 million years, held the secrets of these ancient birds.

Associate professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Dr Siobhan Cooke said that the bone's size indicated that this terror bird may be the largest known ancient bird among its species. It was said that the bird was approximately 5 to 20 per cent larger in comparison to Phorusrhacids.

In the bone, the researchers found deep pits, which are peculiar to Phorusrhacids and teeth marks which belonged to a prehistoric caiman, Purussaurus.

“We suspect that the terror bird would have died as a result of its injuries given the size of crocodilians 12 million years ago,” explained Dr Cooke.

According to researchers, the modern long-legged bird native to South America, seriema, was a distant relative of Phorusrhacids.

An international team of scientists discovered evidence of a major extinction event after the period of rain called the Carnian Pluvial Episode (CPE), which lasted for one million years.

As per the researchers, this extinction event led to the dinosaurs emerging as the dominant creatures on Earth.

Professor Mike Benton from the University of Bristol and Dr Jacopo Dal Corso from the China University of Geosciences at Wuhan carried out this research.

In the Late Triassic period, the continents were joined with each other in a supercontinent called Pangea which was surrounded by the Panthalassa Ocean.

Pangea's interior was dry and arid and rainfall occurred close to the coastal regions.

A new study has revealed how a massive meteorite strike over 3 billion years ago may have helped life on Earth. Watch this report for more details!

Ancient Meteorite Strike Created Ideal Conditions For Life: Study

Scientists have been able to trace the origin of more than 70 per cent of the meteorites which have hit Earth.

Nearly 466 million years ago, a massive swarm of asteroids violently bombarded Earth which was believed to have occurred because a large asteroid had broken into smaller fragments as it travelled in orbit between Mars and Jupiter.

The Massalia asteroid family is a group of asteroids which have similar orbits and is likely to be the source of this massive infall.

This asteroid family dominates around 40 per cent of all meteorites which have fallen to Earth and two other families of space rocks have been named as the source of many of these Earth-bound meteorites.

In the new research, three asteroid families have been held responsible for more than 70 per cent of meteorites. These three families are Karin, Koronis and Massalia. They have been formed because of the collisions in the main asteroid belt.

These families were formed 5.8 million years ago, 7.5 million years ago, and 40 million years ago respectively.

“The most recent collisional events that happened in the asteroid belt are completely dominating the flux of material to our planet,” said Michael Marsset, lead author and a research fellow at the European Southern Observatory, while speaking to Gizmodo.

“You might think that the meteorite flux should be a blend of all the compositional classes we observe in the asteroid belt but it’s not at all the case, it’s dominated by three asteroids that fragmented recently," he added.

Collisional cascade inside asteroid families still active, hints researcher

“Such major collisions do not happen every day—every 30 to 50 million years sounds right as a frequency, although there were three major collisions over the past 8 million years or so,” said Pierre Vernazza, a researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research while speaking to Gizmodo.

“The collisional cascade inside these families is still active. That’s why they’re dominating this production of meteorites," Marsset said.

Meteorites which have fallen on Earth carry the mysteries of the solar system.

“The meteorites have preserved in their present-day composition a lot of information about our early protoplanetary disk,” Marsset explained.

"By linking these meteorites that we can study in fine detail in our laboratory to specific families in the asteroid belt, we can reconstruct the original compositional gradient and thermal gradient of our protoplanetary disk. This ultimately is the goal of this kind of study. This is what we want to learn," he added.

The experimental spaceplane of the US Space Force called X-37B is set to use the atmospheric drag of Earth for the first time to change its own orbit.

This spaceplane has been in space for more than 10 months. The X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle was launched by SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket on December 29, 2023.

This is the seventh time the spaceplane has entered orbit and big plans have been made by the Space Force for the last leg of the journey of the test vehicle around the Earth.

The spaceplane will start a series of orbital manoeuvres called as aerobraking in which they use the drag of the atmosphere of Earth to change its orbit while trying to expend minimal fuel, announced the Space Force on Thursday (Oct 10).

The Space Force has shared very little information regarding the ongoing mission of the spaceplane and has only revealed that the vehicle is set to operate in new orbital alignments and take part in experiments with “space domain awareness technologies.”

As part of its seventh mission, the spaceplane will also carry out an experiment designed by NASA which includes exposing plant seeds to the harsh radiation environment found in long-duration spaceflight to gather data required for future crewed missions.

In May 2020, the X-37B was launched atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket as part of its sixth mission and it remained in orbit for 908 days before it landed at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in November 2022.

A NASA filmmaker has claimed that evidence of intelligent alien life has been found by the telescopes on Earth and it will be released in less than a month.

Filmmaker Simon Holland is known to have worked on documentaries for the BBC and NASA-funded projects.

Speaking about the discovery, he said that an Oxford-backed program was looking for extraterrestrial signals and had been able to identify "non-human intelligence in our galaxy."

The signal, which was a five-hour-long burst of radio waves, looked like was generated from a region around Proxima Centauri which is a star that is 4.2 light-years away from Earth.

The team from Oxford stated that they have been analysing the signal but did not reveal its likely source.

"They are looking for details, hence the delay in publishing the news," said Holland, while speaking to DailyMail.com regarding the strange radio signal which has remained a hot debate since it was first detected on April 29, 2019.

YouTuber 'Prof Simon' Holland claimed that he had received confirmation of the discovery of proof of alien life from a source inside the $100 million nonprofit 'Breakthrough Listen'.

Holland said that the signal is currently in the "low information zone". "The technical hurdles faced are that the signal is very weak," he added.

Citing a source from the Oxford-led nonprofit project Breakthrough Listen, Holland said that the evidence supports the theory that the signal originated from an advanced alien species.

Earth's magnetic field flipped tens of thousands of years ago and now we know what that might have sounded like. It was only for a short time but has fascinated researchers. Known as the Laschamp event, it resulted in Earth's magnetic field flipping 41,000 years ago.

Danish and German researchers used data from the European Space Agency's three-satellite Swarm mission to dive deep into our planet's magnetic field. The research has helped them map and recreate the sounds of the Laschamp event.

The evidence of this flip was first discovered in the 1960s at the Laschamps lava flows in France and so was named after it. During this event, our planet's magnetic field weakened to just five per cent of its normal strength.

As this happened, a bunch of cosmic rays went past the atmosphere. Researchers from the Technical University of Denmark and the German Research Center for Geosciences show in their recreation that it made a terrible sound.

The Scandinavian researchers used field recordings of several things, like wood creaking and rocks falling and mixed them up to create the eerie sounds of the planet's magnetic field twisting away.

Researchers, who have been studying the dramatic changes in the continental configurations of Earth over the past billions of years, have made a stunning observation: that the oldest continental crusts are disintegrating.

According to experts, the Earth's crust went through expansion and contraction and has transformed not only its positions but also the topography across the entire planet.

From the time Earth came into existence, there has been long-term stability in some cratons of the continental crust and others have gone through little destruction because of mantle convection or tectonic events.

In new research, scientists have investigated the reason behind the deformation of cratons and found that it has happened because of a process called decratonisation. The study has been published in Nature Geoscience.

What is the cause of decratonisation in Earth's mantle?

Some experts believe that the possible cause of decratonisation is subduction - a process in which a denser mantle is pushed beneath another - and deep mantle plumes - a process in which one of the segments of the mantle rises to the surface because of buoyancy.

However, they have failed to determine the mechanism which is pushing the deformation and destruction of Earth's cratons.

China University of Geosciences Professor Shaofeng Liu investigated the disintegration of the North China Craton (NCC) and the western Pacific Ocean, which has been taking place for more than 200 million years.

However, the NCC is not the only place facing decratonisation, similar conditions were found in the North American craton, South American craton and the Yangtze craton.

"The North American craton, South American craton and the Yangtze craton in China may have experienced similar deformation. All of these may have experienced early flat-slab subduction. However, intense subsequent rollback subduction might have occurred in the Yangtze craton. In contrast, the North American craton underwent trench retreat following flat-slab subduction but did not exhibit significant slab rollback," said Professor Liu, as reported by phys.org.

"Ancient lithosphere can be broken apart, and this disintegration can be caused by this special form of subduction occurring near oceanic plates, revealing how the continents evolved over Earth's history," he added.

NASA is on alert as three asteroids come hurtling towards Earth at scary speed. Will they collide?

NASA issued a warning as it tracked a bus-sized asteroid, called 2024 TW2, which is set to make a close approach to Earth on October 7.

The space rock, which is almost 21 feet, is moving at a frightening speed of 60,968 km/h.

The asteroid's proximity to the Earth has been an issue of concern, however, NASA has assured that it will not pose any immediate danger to the planet.

According to NASA, asteroid 2024 TW2 will fly by Earth on October 7 at a distance of 288,000 kilometres, which is a little less than the average distance between the Moon and the Earth.

Even though it is flying at a close distance, the asteroid does not fall into the criteria of "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" (PHA).

Here's why this asteroid is not a threat to Earth

Asteroids like 2024 TW2 are part of the group of near-Earth objects (NEOs) which is monitored by NASA regularly.

Even though the speed and proximity of an asteroid are huge, its small size has little to no chance of causing any significant damage even if it enters the atmosphere of the Earth.

Such asteroids generally burn up upon entering the atmosphere of the Earth.

NASA warns against huge asteroid dangerously flying towards Earth at 60,968 km/h

In a stunning study, astronomers have found that small primordial black holes (PBHs) are likely lurking inside the moons, asteroids or even planets like Earth.

According to the scientists, these hypothetical black holes were created soon after the Big Bang and resulted from pockets of subatomic matter that were so dense that they faced gravitational collapse.

Presently, scientists consider PBHs as dark matter. It is a likely source of primordial gravitational waves.

According to recent research, small PBHs are likely present in the interiors of main-sequence neutron and dwarf stars and are slowly consuming their gas supply.

A team of physicists, in a recent study, proposed the idea to include a new avenue for finding PBHs.

Here's how scientists are trying to find PBHs

The team planned to find them inside planets and asteroids by using large plates or slabs of metal for detecting PBHs for signs of their passage.

Scientists are finding the microchannels that these bodies would leave so that they are able to find the existence of PBHs.

The research was carried out by De-Chang Dai, a physicist at National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan and the Center for Education and Research in Cosmology and Astrophysics (CERCA) at Case Western Reserve University, as well as Dejan Stojkovic, who is a physicist from the High Energy Physics and Cosmology group at the State University of New York, Buffalo.

In the paper, the findings were detailed and it is to be published in the journal Physics of the Dark Universe after the review.

For decades, scientists have been on a hunt for the PBHs since their existence was found by Russian scientists Igor D. Novikov and Yakov Zeldovich in 1966.

Speaking to Universe Today about why they proposed novel detection methods for PBHs through email, De-Chang and Stojkovic said, "If an asteroid, or a moon, or a small planet (planetoid) has a liquid core surrounded by a solid crust, then a small PBH will consume the dense liquid core relatively quickly (within weeks to months). The crust will remain intact if the material is strong enough to support gravitational stress."

"Thus, we will end up with a hollow structure. If the central black hole is ejected (due to collisions with other objects), the density will be lower than the usual density of a rocky object with a liquid core," they added.

"We found, for example, that granite can support hollow structures up to the radius of 1/10 of the Earth's radius. That is why we should concentrate on planetoids, moons, or asteroids," said Stojkovic.

Here's what they are Speaking to Universe Today about why they proposed novel detection methods for PBHs through email, De-Chang and Stojkovic said, "If an asteroid, or a moon, or a small planet (planetoid) has a liquid core surrounded by a solid crust, then a small PBH will consume the dense liquid core relatively quickly (within weeks to months). The crust will remain intact if the material is strong enough to support gravitational stress." "Thus, we will end up with a hollow structure. (With inputs from agencies)

The JUICE probe en route to Jupiter and its moons has clicked a high-definition picture of the Earth's radiation belt. The European Space Agency's spacecraft tested its Jovian Energetic Neutrals and Ions (JENI) instrument during a flyby of Earth.

JUICE slingshot itself towards Venus using our planet's gravity, from where it will use Venus's gravity to travel towards the Jupiter system.

Between August 19 and August 20, the spacecraft clicked extremely clear images of the Earth's radiation belts. These are groups of charged particles trapped in the Earth's magnetic field.

"As soon as we saw the crisp, new images, high fives went around the room," Matina Gkioulidou, deputy lead of JENI at APL, said in a statement.

"It was clear we had captured the vast ring of hot plasma encircling Earth in unprecedented detail, an achievement that has sparked excitement for what is to come at Jupiter."

The probe launched on April 14, 2023, aims to study Jupiter's atmosphere and how it affects its moons Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa. Some of these moons are believed to host liquid water beneath their icy crusts.

The JUICE spacecraft will study the moons to know whether they host the elements essential for life.

The picture clicked by JUICE shows plasma swirling in the radiation belt like a halo, stretching out several times the Earth's radius around the planet. Earth has two radiation belts which are also known as the Van Allen radiation belts and create a donut-like region around the planet.

They contain electrons and protons trapped by the planet's magnetic field. The two belts are situated at different altitudes. The inner radiation belt is between 600 and 7,500 miles above Earth, while the outer belt sits about 8,000 to 37,000 miles above the Earth's surface.

"The richness of the data from our deep dive through the magnetosphere is astounding. JENI's image of the entire system we just flew through was the cherry on top. It's a powerful combination we will exploit in the Jovian system."

Notably, once the probe reaches Jupiter, JENI will be used to study the magnetosphere of the largest planet in our solar system.

JUICE will undergo a second gravity assist after reaching Venus in August 2025. It will return to Earth and will have two more gravity assists in 2026 and 2029. It is scheduled to reach Jupiter in 2031.

The massive asteroid that is believed to have ended the era of dinosaurs when it crashed into Earth some 66 million years ago was not the only culprit, researchers found recently.

After performing detailed scans of an underwater crater off the coast of Guinea in West Africa, researchers discovered that it was created when another large asteroid smashed into Earth around the same time at the end of the Cretaceous period.

The violent collision between 65 million and 67 million years ago produced a crater more than five miles across, the scans reveal. Scientists estimate that the asteroid measured a quarter of a mile wide struck Earth at nearly 45,000 miles per hour.

Though the other space rock was much smaller than the asteroid that caused the mass extinction of dinosaurs, it was large enough to leave scars on the face of the planet.

“The new images paint a picture of the catastrophic event,” said Dr Uisdean Nicholson, a marine geologist at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, who first discovered the Nadir crater in 2022. At the time, the details of the impact were unclear.

Impact of another massive collision

Scientists devised 3D seismic imaging to map the crater rim on the Earth to further understand about the impact of the second collision. The team also analysed the scars that lie 30 metres beneath the ocean floor.

“There are around 20 confirmed marine craters worldwide, and none of them has been captured in anything close to this level of detail,” said Nicholson. “It’s exquisite.”

Researchers found that the collision set off intense tremors that liquefied beneath the ocean floor causing faults to form below the seabed. This impact triggered landslides with visible traces thousands of square miles beyond the crater rim and also created a tsunami more than 800 metres high that would have travelled across the Atlantic.

The details of the research are published in Nature Communications Earth & Environment.

The team of researchers though cannot pinpoint the exact location where the asteroid struck the Earth, the discovery of the crater and its approximate age has itself prompted speculation that it may have belonged to a cluster of dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period.

“The closest humans have come to seeing something like this is the 1908 Tunguska event, when a 50-metre asteroid entered Earth’s atmosphere and exploded in the skies above Siberia,” Nicholson said.

Massive asteroid that eradicated dinosaurs when it crashed into Earth was not alone: Researchers

The mysterious structure of Earth and its mantle has kept scientists hooked, and they keep studying it to make new discoveries every day.

The geography of Earth already felt different from what was taught to many of us in schools when scientists discovered a missing continent under the crust of the Earth, 375 years after it went missing.

Now, scientists have stumbled upon a massive ocean which remained hidden under the crust of Earth for all these years. The ocean consists of water stored in a crystal structure of the ringwoodite rock.

How did the ocean form under Earth's crust?

According to scientists, a rock - called 'ringwoodite' - was present 400 miles underground and had a huge supply of water which got stored in it.

Earlier, scientists found that the water was stored in a mantle rock, which was a sponge-like state, that is not solid, liquid, or gas but a fourth state.

The findings were published in a scientific paper titled "Dehydration melting at the top of the lower mantle" in 2014.

"The ringwoodite is like a sponge, soaking up water, there is something very special about the crystal structure of ringwoodite that allows it to attract hydrogen and trap water," stated geophysicist Steve Jacobsen, who was part of the team of scientists.

"This mineral can contain a lot of water under conditions of the deep mantle. I think we are finally seeing evidence for a whole Earth water cycle, which may help explain the vast amount of liquid water on the surface of our habitable planet. Scientists have been looking for this missing deep water for decades," he added.

The discovery was made by scientists after studying earthquakes and finding that seismometers were detecting under the surface of the Earth.

Through the findings, scientists were able to ascertain that the water was present within the rock known as ringwoodite.

The presence of just 1 per cent of water in the ringwoodite rock meant that three times more water was present under the Earth's surface than is present in the five oceans on the surface.

Along with the ocean, the researchers made another significant discovery of an entirely new ecosystem when they checked the volcanic crust using an underwater robot.

The high-energy burst of radio waves, which recently made headlines for travelling for eight billion years in space before reaching Earth, had a "weird" place of origin, which scientists have now identified.

The radio wave, which is called a fast radio burst (FRB), was one of those hundreds of fleeting blasts of energy which have been detected by scientists across the years.

When it was detected, some astronomers made a wild guess that it could be a signal sent by alien life to our planet.

Here's what scientists found about the origin of radio waves

Scientists, while studying the FRB, found that it had originated from a cluster of galaxies which were present in the universe when it was only five billion years old.

The FRB, which has been dubbed as FRB 20220610A, was discovered as the most farthest and powerful signal ever detected by astronomers.

It has now been found that the home of radio signals are seven tightly packed galaxies, as reported by The Daily Mail.

"None have ever been seen in such a compact group," stated astronomer Yuxin (Vic) Dong, who was part of the team at Northwestern University which studied the origin of FRB 20220610A. "Its birthplace is truly rare," Dong said.

The head of the team of scientists at Northwestern, Alexa Gordon said, "It's these types of environments, these weird ones, that are driving us toward better understanding the mystery of FRBs."

These flashes of light, which appeared as the radio band of the electromagnetic spectrum, were most likely temporary and appeared randomly from space, as per scientists.

Astronomer Wen-fai Dong, who looked into FRB 20220610A, stated that in the new Hubble images, these galaxies appeared in oblong shapes or 'tidal tales' which suggested that they may have had collisions through which fast radio burst may have birthed.

"Without the Hubble's imaging, it would still remain a mystery as to whether this FRB originated from one monolithic galaxy or from some type of interacting system," said Gordon, in a NASA statement.

Northwestern astronomer Wen-fai Fong, who was also part of the project, also confirmed the oblong shapes or 'tidal tales' of some of the seven galaxies which hinted at the chances of collisions.

"There are some signs that the group members are 'interacting. In other words, they could be trading materials or possibly on a path to merging," Fong said.

After more than 80,000 years, a comet will again become visible from Earth - in a treat for the sky gazers - during two separate phases in the next month.

Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, which is also called Comet A3, will now orbit around the Sun after more than 80,000 years, according to a report published on Earth.com.

The comet has become visible from Earth from September 27 and will appear in the sky before sunrise on October 2.

It is likely to appear like a fuzzy ball with a tail which stretches across the sky.

"C/2023 A3 has an orbital period of approximately 80,000 years, classifying it as a long-period comet. This means its behaviour and appearance can be unpredictable, with potential changes in brightness and tail development as it approaches the sun," said Minjae Kim, a space expert in the University of Warwick's astronomy department, while speaking to Earth.com.

"If predictions hold, it could be visible to the naked eye, appearing as a fuzzy star with a tail stretching across the sky. Otherwise, binoculars or a small telescope may reveal more detail in the comet’s structure and tail," Kim explained.

The comet achieved its perihelion on September 27 which means it came to the closest point to the sun and will not go on a trip back towards the outer solar system, as per WKMG.

The comet will also become visible in the middle of October if the comet lives after its trip around the Sun. This is because comets generally break apart as they come closer to the sun.

After the trip, the comet will become visible to the naked eye when it comes closest to Earth and its best visibility is likely to be from October 12 until October 20.

Every night, the comet will move higher up in the sky till it disappears again for the next 80,000 years.

This means its behaviour and appearance can be unpredictable, with potential changes in brightness and tail development as it approaches the sun," said Minjae Kim, a space expert in the University of Warwick's astronomy department, while speaking to Earth.com. Also Read: Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS en route to sun captured from ISS "If predictions hold, it could be visible to the naked eye, appearing as a fuzzy star with a tail stretching across the sky. Here's how you can watch Comet C/2023 A3 Those who wish to see the comet with the naked eye should check the moon in its waning crescent phase. The comet's position can change as per the moon on different dates. Comet C/2023 A3 is nearly 157.1 million miles away from Earth and is travelling at a speed of around 70km per second (150,000 miles per hour). (With inputs from agencies)

Comet C/2023 A3 will be visible from Earth after 80,000 years. Here's where to watch it

The hunt for life beyond Earth went a step further when scientists discovered water vapour in abundance in the universe.

In the latest research, the scientists focused on a gas and dust disk which was surrounding a young star. It was observed using the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA).

The star, which has been named HL Tauri, was discovered 450 light-years away and a huge amount of vapour was seen surrounding it.

The water vapour was equivalent to three times the volume of all the oceans on Earth and could be the birthplace of the planet.

Speaking about the discovery in a press release, Stefano Facchini, an astrophysicist at the University of Milan and study leader, said, “I had never imagined that we could capture an image of oceans of water vapour in the same region where a planet is likely forming."

As per the research published in Nature Astronomy, the water vapour's volume can increase the chances of the planet being habitable after its formation.

As per the scientists, the amount of water vapour present around HL Tauri appeared to have an influence over the birth of new planets. It is also likely that the conditions amid the vapour can be very similar to the conditions that were prevalent when the formation of Earth took place 4.5 billion years ago.

Speaking about his excitement at noticing the oceans of water vapour, Facchini said, “Our recent images reveal a substantial quantity of water vapour at a range of distances from the star that includes a gap where a planet could potentially be forming at the present time."

In recent times, water has been fundamental for various scientific developments. Recently, it was also found by scientists that water has been leaking slowly from the surface to the core of the Earth.
