The experimental spaceplane of the US Space Force called X-37B is set to use the atmospheric drag of Earth for the first time to change its own orbit.&nbsp;

As part of its seventh mission, the spaceplane will also carry out an experiment designed by NASA which includes exposing plant seeds to the harsh radiation environment found in long-duration spaceflight to gather data required for future crewed missions.

In May 2020, the X-37B was launched atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket as part of its sixth mission and it remained in orbit for 908 days before&nbsp;it landed at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in November 2022.

US secretive spaceplane to try to change its orbit using Earth's atmosphere

A NASA filmmaker has claimed that evidence of intelligent alien life has been found by the telescopes on Earth and it will be released in less than a month.

Filmmaker Simon Holland is known to have worked on documentaries for the&nbsp;BBC and&nbsp;NASA-funded projects.&nbsp;

Speaking about the discovery, he said that an Oxford-backed program was looking for extraterrestrial signals and had been able to identify "non-human intelligence in our galaxy."

The signal, which was a five-hour-long burst of radio waves, looked like was generated from a region around Proxima Centauri which is a star that is 4.2 light-years away from Earth.

The team from Oxford stated that they have been analysing the signal but did not reveal its likely source.

The team planned to find them inside planets and asteroids by using large plates or slabs of metal for detecting PBHs for signs of their passage.

The research was carried out by De-Chang Dai, a physicist at National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan and the&nbsp;Center for Education and Research in Cosmology and Astrophysics&nbsp; (CERCA) at Case Western Reserve University, as well as Dejan Stojkovic, who is a physicist from the High Energy Physics and Cosmology&nbsp;group at the State University of New York, Buffalo.

Speaking to Universe Today about why they proposed novel detection methods for PBHs through email, De-Chang and Stojkovic said, "If an&nbsp;asteroid, or a moon, or a small planet (planetoid) has a liquid core surrounded by a solid crust, then a small PBH will consume the dense liquid core relatively quickly (within weeks to months). The crust will remain intact if the material is strong enough to support gravitational stress."

"Thus, we will end up with a hollow structure. If the central&nbsp;black hole&nbsp;is ejected (due to collisions with other objects), the density will be lower than the usual density of a rocky object with a liquid core," they added.

"We found, for example, that granite can support hollow structures up to the radius of 1/10 of the Earth's radius. That is why we should concentrate on planetoids, moons, or asteroids," said Stojkovic.&nbsp;

JUICE slingshot itself towards Venus using our planet's gravity, from where it will use Venus's gravity to travel towards the Jupiter system.&nbsp;

Between August 19 and August 20, the spacecraft clicked extremely clear images of the Earth's radiation belts. These are groups of charged particles trapped in the Earth's magnetic field.

"As soon as we saw the crisp, new images, high fives went around the room," Matina Gkioulidou, deputy lead of JENI at APL, said in a statement.&nbsp;

"It was clear we had captured the vast ring of hot plasma encircling Earth in unprecedented detail, an achievement that has sparked excitement for what is to come at Jupiter."

The probe launched on April 14, 2023, aims to study Jupiter's atmosphere and how it affects its moons Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa. Some of these moons are believed to host liquid water beneath their icy crusts.

The JUICE spacecraft will study the moons to know whether they host the elements essential for life.

The picture clicked by JUICE shows plasma swirling in the radiation belt like a halo, stretching out several times the Earth's radius around the planet. Earth has two radiation belts which are also known as the Van Allen radiation belts and create a donut-like region around the planet.

They contain electrons and protons trapped by the planet's magnetic field. The two belts are situated at different altitudes. The inner radiation belt is between 600 and 7,500 miles above Earth, while the outer belt sits about 8,000 to 37,000 miles above the Earth's surface.

"The richness of the data from our deep dive through the magnetosphere is astounding. JENI's image of the entire system we just flew through was the cherry on top. It's a powerful combination we will exploit in the Jovian system."

Notably, once the probe reaches Jupiter, JENI will be used to study the magnetosphere of the largest planet in our solar system.

JUICE will undergo a second gravity assist after reaching Venus in August 2025. It will return to Earth and will have two more gravity assists in 2026 and 2029. It is scheduled to reach Jupiter in 2031.

The massive asteroid that is believed to have ended the era of dinosaurs when it crashed into Earth some 66 million years ago was not the only culprit, researchers found recently.

After performing detailed scans of an underwater crater off the coast of Guinea in West Africa, researchers discovered that it was created when another large asteroid smashed into Earth around the same time at the end of the Cretaceous period.

The violent collision between 65 million and 67 million years ago produced a crater more than five miles across, the scans reveal. Scientists estimate that the asteroid measured a quarter of a mile wide struck Earth at nearly 45,000 miles per hour.

Scientists devised 3D seismic imaging to map the crater rim on the Earth to further understand about the impact of the second collision. The team also analysed the scars that lie 30 metres beneath the ocean floor.&nbsp;

“There are around 20 confirmed marine craters worldwide, and none of them has been captured in anything close to this level of detail,” said Nicholson. “It’s exquisite.”

Researchers found that the collision set off intense tremors that liquefied beneath the ocean floor causing faults to form below the seabed. This impact triggered landslides with visible traces thousands of square miles beyond the crater rim and also created a tsunami more than 800 metres high that would have travelled across the Atlantic.&nbsp;

"The ringwoodite is like a sponge, soaking up water, there is something very special about the crystal structure of ringwoodite that allows it to attract hydrogen and trap water," stated geophysicist Steve Jacobsen, who was part of the team of scientists.

"This mineral can contain a lot of water under conditions of the deep mantle. I think we are finally seeing evidence for a whole Earth water cycle, which may help explain the vast amount of liquid water on the surface of our habitable planet. Scientists have been looking for this missing deep water for decades," he added.

The discovery was made by scientists after studying earthquakes and finding that seismometers were detecting under the surface of the Earth.

Through the findings, scientists were able to ascertain that the water was present within the rock known as ringwoodite.

The presence of just 1 per cent of water in the ringwoodite rock meant that three times more water was present under the Earth's surface than is present in the five oceans on the surface.

Along with the ocean, the researchers&nbsp;made another significant discovery&nbsp;of an entirely new ecosystem when they checked the volcanic crust using an underwater robot.

The comet has become visible from Earth from September 27 and will appear in the sky before sunrise on October 2.

It is likely to appear like a fuzzy ball with a tail which stretches across the sky.

This means its behaviour and appearance can be unpredictable, with potential changes in brightness and tail development as it approaches the sun," said Minjae Kim, a space expert in the University of Warwick's astronomy department, while speaking to Earth.com.

After the trip, the comet will become visible to the naked eye when it comes closest to Earth and its best visibility is likely to be from October 12 until October 20.

Every night, the comet will move higher up in the sky till it disappears again for the next 80,000 years.

Scientists from the University of Maryland have stumbled upon the evidence of an ancient seafloor which is believed to have sunk deep into the Earth when dinosaurs existed and is now affecting the interior structure of Earth.

This previously unknown patch of the seafloor is located in the East Pacific Rise and has thrown light on the inner workings of the planet and how the surface of Earth has gone through changes over millions of years.&nbsp;

The findings of the team were published&nbsp;in the journal&nbsp;Science Advances.

The team, headed by geology postdoctoral researcher Jingchuan Wang, used innovative seismic imaging techniques to look deep into the mantle of Earth, which is the layer between the planet's core and crust.

The upper and lower mantles of the Earth are separated by this zone, which expands or contracts on the basis of temperature.

According to the team, this seafloor can also explain the Pacific Large Low Shear Velocity Province's (LLSVP) anomalous structure.

"This thickened area is like a fossilized fingerprint of an ancient piece of seafloor that subducted into the Earth approximately 250 million years ago. It's giving us a glimpse into Earth's past that we've never had before," Wang said.

Subduction takes place when one tectonic plate slides below the other one and the surface material is recycled back into the mantle of Earth.

The scientists, by looking into the seismic waves which travelled through different layers of the planet, were able to create a detailed map of structures inside the mantle.

"You can think of seismic imaging as something similar to a CT scan. It's basically allowed us to have a cross-sectional view of our planet's insides," said Wang.&nbsp;

"Usually, oceanic slabs of material are consumed by the Earth completely, leaving no discernible traces on the surface. But seeing the ancient subduction slab through this perspective gave us new insights into the relationship between very deep Earth structures and surface geology, which were not obvious before," he added.
