As wars rage across the world, and major shipping routes have been disrupted, the impact goes well beyond the energy crisis. What if I told you that the protracted wars may affect, the food on your plate? This is not an exaggeration. India has now warned of a major food crisis... Speaking at an event organised by The Asia Society in New York, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar asserted that the world faces a major food crisis in the coming months, as wars in Ukraine and West Asia had compounded the effects of a super El Nino. Amid an escalation in the Russia-Ukraine War, Jaishankar hinted at the possibility of major grain exporters being unable to send their shipments out of the Black Sea. He said, "We are already looking at significant fertiliser shortages because key producers have been in West Asia & Russia." He also flagged the impact of super El Nino, which scientists have warned could cause almost half a million additional heat-related deaths worldwide by February 2027. Highlighting that energy, food, fertilisers and finance were all under strain at once, he flagged the devastating impact on economies of the Global South. Earlier this week, Ukraine accused Russia of damaging port infrastructure facilities in Ukraine's Black Sea region of Odesa. Rescuers were seen working on the site of a destroyed building. Now, these air strikes may have been confined to the Black Sea, but their consequences are not limited to the region. Why is this the case? Russia and Ukraine are significant producers and exporters of several commodities including wheat, corn, sunflower oil and fertilisers. For instance, Russia and Ukraine account for around one-third of the global wheat trade, which mostly moves through Black Sea ports. However, multiple drone and missile attacks on Black Sea ports and vessels by Russia and Ukraine, have shut down nearly 97% of their grain export capacity. Overall, this conflict has disrupted close to 17% of world's grain exports. This has resulted in higher food prices, especially impacting countries which depend on imports. The situation has escalated as the Strait of Hormuz remains virtually closed due to the Iran war. This strategic waterway caters to almost one-third of global fertiliser trade. This is crucial as less fertilisers reaching the farmers imply smaller harvests, which can result in a food shortage months later. Additionally, the disruption is compounded by rising prices of natural gas, which is a key input in fertiliser production, pushing costs higher and limiting output. A few days earlier, the International Chamber of Commerce urged U.S. and Iran to accept UN's facilitation to resolve the fertiliser supply crisis, sparked by the Hormuz blockade. Now, the El Nino impact is clearly visible in India. During the June-September monsoon season, India witnessed a rainfall deficit of 13%, which is the fourth lowest seasonal rainfall since 2001 and the 13th lowest since 1901. So far, the Government of India has declared a drought in five states—Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Expressing concern over the drought situation, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated that he would maintain constant communication with the state governments. For the upcoming rabi crop season, the minister said the centre would assist states in identifying suitable seeds and crop varieties that require less water, have shorter maturity periods and are suited to local soil and weather conditions. Chouhan added that other parts of the country would also be assessed for drought status. But where does the responsibility lie for a possible food crisis? Taking a veiled dig at countries who are refusing to bring the wars to a closure, S Jaishankar said that policymakers have a responsibility to understand the consequences of their decisions on the rest of the world. He also stressed that countries should not be so self-centred...

The ministers agreed to hold annual foreign ministers’ meetings and to launch an annual business forum, reflecting India’s deepening ties with the European Union and a desire for a more structured Central European track. They also pledged closer work on technology, innovation, research and education, as well as cultural links and people-to-people exchanges, including student mobility. Defence featured prominently. Jaishankar noted a “very strong history” of military cooperation with all four V4 states and said both sides wanted to “refresh and take forward that record.” Space, connectivity and broader industrial and technological collaboration were also discussed. The meeting brought together Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, Hungary’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Anita Orbán, Slovakia’s Juraj Blanár and Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka. They also exchanged views on the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Gulf, describing the conversation as a useful stocktake of major global crises. Jaishankar later said India already had “very good relations” with the V4 countries and valued their industrial strength, innovation and talent. The endorsement adds European voices to India’s argument that the Security Council, still structured around the post-1945 order, no longer reflects contemporary power. For the V4, the new format offers a dedicated channel to a large market and an increasingly influential Indo-Pacific actor, beyond their individual bilateral ties with New Delhi.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday (September 11) that the world is witnessing a significant change in the political and economic order. This development has brought volatility, uncertainty, and complexity, which have become defining features at the global level. Addressing the BRICS Business Forum, Jaishankar said the world is also experiencing geopolitical conflicts, pandemics and climate-related disruptions, prompting economic consequences. He added that rapid digitisation and technological advances were opening a new space for growth, productivity and development. "We meet at a time when global political and economic order is in flux. Volatility, uncertainty, and complexity have become defining features of the world around us. We are witnessing the economic consequences of geopolitical conflicts, of pandemics, and of climate-related disruptions," EAM Jaishankar said. "At the same time, rapid digitisation and technological advances are opening new possibilities for growth, productivity and development. The result is an economic landscape where both risks and opportunities are becoming more widely distributed and where the ability to anticipate, adapt and respond is acquiring greater importance," Jaishankar added. He underscored the common thread that makes it easier for businesses in BRICS countries to find more partners, access more markets, connect supply networks, and convert complementarities into viable commercial partnerships. He also said that higher economic activity and higher economic security indicate a greater self-reliance for countries like BRICS. "The objective is to strengthen our ability to absorb shocks while remaining connected and competitive. That calls for genuine market practices, dependable logistics, a predictable business environment, diversified commercial relationships, and transparent trade and investment. It also calls for energy systems capable of coping with disruption and transition pathways that are suited to different national circumstances," EAM Jaishankar said. Also read: BRICS Business Forum begins in New Delhi as focus on trade, AI, finance and energy security. Remember, India is the world’s largest nation, so it’s not an easy task to get this across the finish line, but we are determined to get there, and while trade is very important for our relationship, we will continue to work closely together on other very important areas, such as security, counterterrorism, energy, technology, education and health,” he said. Describing India as a real friend, Gor said that disagreement is part of a friendship and stressed that the India-US partnership is rooted in a relationship at the highest level. “The United States and India are bound not just by shared interest, but by a relationship anchored at the highest levels. Real friends can disagree, but always resolve their differences”. Also Read: 'HELP IS ON ITS WAY. IRANIAN PATRIOTS, KEEP PROTESTING', says Trump and urges protestors to 'take over institutions in Iran' “In the end, last week, our great Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, powerfully stated that this year will be a year of reciprocity. We are raising the standard for diplomacy itself, which means fair trade, mutual respect and shared security. Many of you have asked me for an update on the ongoing trade deal negotiations. Both sides continue to actively engage," he added. India and US ties have come under strain due to a deadlock in trade negotiations, with talks slipping despite deadlines in mid‑2025. After months of negotiations leading up to an August 1, 2025 deadline for tariff enforcement, the Trump administration imposed sweeping duties on Indian goods , including a 25 per cent “reciprocal” tariff and an additional 25 per cent penalty tied to India’s continued imports of Russian oil, bringing the total to around 50 per cent, one of the highest rates faced by any trading partner.

Jaishankar’s talks with US Secretary Rubio on various subjects, including trade, follow US Ambassador Gor calling India–US ties the “most consequential global partnership of this century,” hinting at a possible thaw amid trade tensions.

‘Politics now ‘trumps’ economics,’ says Jaishankar, stresses on supply chain diversification

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that New Delhi would continue “endeavouring to forge new trade arrangements” but only under a firmly “people-centric vision”, as the country climbs the global economic ladder amid growing uncertainty in world trade. India will pursue new trade deals with 'people-centric vision', says EAM Dr S Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday (Nov 18) reiterated India's zero tolerance stance against terrorism in any form, stating that there can be "no justification, no looking away and no whitewashing" of terror. Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government meeting in Moscow, he asserted that India has the sovereign right to defend its citizens. Reminding that the SCO was founded specifically to combat "three evils" of terrorism, separatism and extremism, the external affairs minister said, "We must never forget that the SCO was founded to combat the three evils of terrorism, separatism and extremism. These threats have become even more serious in the years that have passed. It is imperative that the world displays zero tolerance towards terrorism in all its forms and manifestations." Also Read: PM Modi calls for ending ‘colonial mindset’, sets 10-year deadline "There can be no justification, no looking away and no whitewashing. As India has demonstrated, we have the right to defend our people against terrorism and will exercise it. In conclusion, India believes that SCO must adapt to the changing global landscape, develop an expanded agenda and reform its working methods. We will contribute positively and fully to these objectives," he emphasised. Jaishankar's remarks come at a time when India is facing an increasing level of security threats from a rise in terrorist activities following the November 10 car blast near Delhi's iconic Red Fort, which killed at least 15 people and injured many. The Union cabinet, following a preliminary investigation into the incident, declared the blast a "terror incident" in a resolution.
Jaishankar advocates for reforms in the SCO
The EAM, in his remark, pushed for modernisation of the 24-year-old organisation, calling for more flexibility, fresh thinking and resolution of long-pending decisions such as making English an official language of the SCO. Currently, Russian and Chinese are the official working languages of the grouping. "Let me now turn to the modernisation of the SCO. As the organisation continues to evolve, India strongly supports its reform-oriented agenda. We welcome centres addressing challenges such as organised crime, drug trafficking, and cybersecurity. As the organisation becomes more diverse, the SCO must be more flexible and more adaptable," he said. "To this end, the long-delayed decision to make English an official language of the SCO must be prioritised. We all recognise that the SCO must keep up with contemporary changes. That must be reflected in fresh thinking and new collaborations. India's initiatives, such as the SCO Special Working Group on Startups and Innovation and the SCO Startup Forum, are good examples. They're aimed at promoting innovation and creativity, especially targeting the younger generation," he added. Also Read: Jaishankar meets US Secretary of State Rubio, discusses trade and global issues on G7 sidelines Jaishankar is in Moscow to attend the 24th meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the SCO member states on November 17 and 18. Reminding that the SCO was founded specifically to combat "three evils" of terrorism, separatism and extremism, the external affairs minister said, "We must never forget that the SCO was founded to combat the three evils of terrorism, separatism and extremism. These threats have become even more serious in the years that have passed. It is imperative that the world displays zero tolerance towards terrorism in all its forms and manifestations." As India has demonstrated, we have the right to defend our people against terrorism and will exercise it. Jaishankar advocates for reforms in the SCO The EAM, in his remark, pushed for modernisation of the 24-year-old organisation, calling for more flexibility, fresh thinking and resolution of long-pending decisions such as making English an official language of the SCO. New Delhi: India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar will travel to Canada next week, in a significant step towards consolidating the ongoing reset in bilateral ties. The visit comes months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met in July, setting the stage for a thaw in relations that had hit rock bottom in 2023-24. The Indian foreign minister will attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Ontario’s Niagara Region on November 11-12. Canada, holding the G7 Presidency, is hosting the meeting for the second time this year. A statement released by Canada said, “The meeting will bring together G7 ministers to discuss global challenges and strengthen international collaboration. The agenda will cover thematic issues including security and prosperity, as well as important work on economic resilience.” India has been a regular invitee of the G7 summit meetings, a tradition restarted by France in 2019. Last month, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand visited New Delhi, marking the first visit by a Canadian cabinet minister in two years. During her trip, Anand held extensive talks with EAM Dr Jaishankar, Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal. She also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a rare gesture for a visiting foreign minister. Both sides unveiled a new roadmap for cooperation, including the relaunch of the energy dialogue and the Joint Science and Technology Cooperation Committee. Ties between India and Canada had nosedived after then-Canadian PM Justin Trudeau alleged in 2023 that Indian agents were involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistan separatist and designated terrorist by India. New Delhi rejected the claims as “absurd”. What followed was a public war of words between the two sides followed by the withdrawal of high commissioners. The turnaround in ties came when Mark Carney took over as Canadian Prime Minister in early 2025, pledging in the election campaign to restore and strengthen ties with India. A key telephonic conversation between Jaishankar and Anand on May 29 is believed to have been the turning point. Canada extended an invitation to India for the G7 Summit in June, and by August, both nations reinstated their high commissioners. September saw National Security Advisers’ talks and pre-foreign office consultations, further solidifying the reset.
