Paramedics, who were present at the Hardmission electronic music festival organised at Flemington racecourse on Saturday (Jan 6), admitted nine festivalgoers to different hospitals across Melbourne.&nbsp;

Victorian Ambulance Union said that eight people were put in medical induced comas and breathing tubes were inserted in their throats.

A faction of Mexico’s dreaded gang <a name="_Hlk147259235">Sinaloa </a>put up banners across the state declaring that they have stopped the production and sale&nbsp;of fentanyl — a drug that is more potent than heroin.

The decree was reported ordered by the sons of ex-Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

On Monday, the banners, also called "narcomantas", appeared in the northern Sinaloa state, Reuters news agency reported.

The banners were signed by Los Chapitos — a grouping of brothers who took over their father's criminal empire when Guzman was extradited to the United States in 2017. The sons are known as “the Chapitos” after their famous father.

“In Sinaloa, the sale, manufacture, transport or any other business dealing with fentanyl, is strictly prohibited, including the sale of chemicals used to produce it,” the banners read. “You have been warned. Respectfully, Chapitos.”

<h2>US pressure on Mexico</h2>

The banners appeared at a time when US authorities are ramping up pressure on Mexico to take action against crime groups involved in fentanyl production.

This year, the US government declared the "little Chapos" as the principal providers of fentanyl into the United States.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 109,680 overdose deaths occurred last year in the United States, and about 75,000 of those were linked to fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), on Friday (July 28) approved the sale of a second opioid overdose reversal drug called RiVive, said the US government agency, in a statement. It was also the first version of over-the-counter naloxone from a nonprofit company which could lead to cheap and even free doses for those in need.

The approval of the prescription-free sale of the second opioid overdose reversal drug, RiVive, will provide patients with another over-the-counter option for emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose.&nbsp;

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends quickly administering Narcan – the only over-the-counter FDA-approved option until now – which consists of an active drug called naloxone, a life-saving medication and nasal spray used to counter the overdose effects.&nbsp;

Narcan, which was approved in March is available in all 50 states and can be procured without a prescription in most states.

Similarly, RiVive, which is also a nasal spray version of the drug naloxone, rapidly reverses or blocks the effects of opioids – especially when administered within minutes of the first signs of an overdose – restoring normal respiration.&nbsp;

“We know naloxone is a powerful tool to help quickly reverse the effects of opioids during an overdose. Ensuring naloxone is widely available, especially as an approved OTC product, makes a critical tool available to help protect public health,” said FDA Commissioner Robert&nbsp;Califf, in a statement.&nbsp;

He added, “The agency has long prioritised access to naloxone products, and we welcome manufacturers of other naloxone products to discuss potential nonprescription development programs with the FDA.”&nbsp;

<h2>When will it be available?</h2>

The RiVive’s manufacturer Harm Reduction Therapeutics, a nonprofit pharmaceutical company, said that the opioid overdose reversal drug might be available early next year, primarily to harm-reduction organisations and state governments, reported Reuters. The organisation will also make at least 200,000 doses available for free.

According to the US government agency, more than 105,000 reported fatal overdoses occurred in the 12-month period ending in February 2023. Those involving stimulants, including cocaine or psychostimulants with abuse potential (primarily methamphetamine), also continued to increase with 32,537 overdose deaths in 2021.&nbsp;

Most illegal fentanyl is pressed by Mexican cartels into counterfeit pills made to look like other medications like Xanax, oxycodone, or Percocet.

'Lack of love and hugs' causing drug overdose deaths in America: Mexico's President

Canadian companies have been given approval by the country’s federal health agency to produce and sell cocaine, seemingly reflecting Health Canada’s bid to improve safety conditions for the country’s drug addicts. This also comes after a radical policy shift to address an opioid overdose crisis which has killed thousands.&nbsp;

In a statement, a Canadian biosciences company, Sunshine Earth Labs, on Thursday (March 2) said that they have been licensed to produce and sell cocaine, a month after a similar licensing arrangement was offered to the British Columbia-based Adastra Labs.

“We will evaluate how the commercialization of this substance fits in with our business model at Adastra in an effort to position ourselves to support the demand for a safe supply of cocaine”, said the chief executive Michael Forbes of the British Columbia-based company. The labs, which until now focused on cannabis extracts, are also allowed to produce and sell hallucinogens, psilocybin and psilocin which are more commonly known as magic mushrooms.&nbsp;

The Sunshine Labs said that they received permission from the federal health agency to “legally possess, produce, sell and distribute coca leaf and cocaine” in November, last year. This was in addition to MDMA (ecstasy), morphine and diacetylmorphine (heroin). “We are incredibly proud of the progress we have made in the last year, said Donovan Edwards, CEO of Sunshine Earth Labs, in a statement.&nbsp;

He added, “we have been proactively pursuing amendments to our Dealer's License to include MDMA, coca leaf, cocaine, opium, morphine, and diacetylmorphine to position ourselves as a legitimate safer supply partner. We will continue to work on securing global trade relationships to import ethically sourced medical products for safer supply.”

Notably, the move is in line with a criminal code exemption which was granted by the government to the aforementioned Canadian province for a three-year pilot project which aims to destigmatize drug use which they believe stops people from seeking help, reported AFP. It also made British Columbia only the second jurisdiction in North America to decriminalise hard drugs following the United States’ Oregan in 2020.&nbsp;

Out of the more than 30,000 overdose-related deaths recorded across Canada, British Columbia accounted for over 10,000 since 2016 when it declared a public health emergency and was dubbed as the epicentre of the crisis. The number also represented nearly six people dying each day from toxic drug poisoning out of the five million residents of the province.&nbsp;

In a statement, a Canadian biosciences company, Sunshine Earth Labs, on Thursday (March 2) said that they have been licensed to produce and sell cocaine, a month after a similar licensing arrangement was offered to the British Columbia-based Adastra Labs. “We will evaluate how the commercialization of this substance fits in with our business model at Adastra in an effort to position ourselves to support the demand for a safe supply of cocaine”, said the chief executive Michael Forbes of the British Columbia-based company. The labs, which until now focused on cannabis extracts, are also allowed to produce and sell hallucinogens, psilocybin and psilocin which are more commonly known as magic mushrooms. The Sunshine Labs said that they received permission from the federal health agency to “legally possess, produce, sell and distribute coca leaf and cocaine” in November, last year. This was in addition to MDMA (ecstasy), morphine and diacetylmorphine (heroin). “We are incredibly proud of the progress we have made in the last year, said Donovan Edwards, CEO of Sunshine Earth Labs, in a statement. He added, “we have been proactively pursuing amendments to our Dealer's License to include MDMA, coca leaf, cocaine, opium, morphine, and diacetylmorphine to position ourselves as a legitimate safer supply partner. We will continue to work on securing global trade relationships to import ethically sourced medical products for safer supply.” Notably, the move is in line with a criminal code exemption which was granted by the government to the aforementioned Canadian province for a three-year pilot project which aims to destigmatize drug use which they believe stops people from seeking help, reported AFP. It also made British Columbia only the second jurisdiction in North America to decriminalise hard drugs following the United States’ Oregan in 2020. Out of the more than 30,000 overdose-related deaths recorded across Canada, British Columbia accounted for over 10,000 since 2016 when it declared a public health emergency and was dubbed as the epicentre of the crisis. The number also represented nearly six people dying each day from toxic drug poisoning out of the five million residents of the province. Among the most recent fatalities include a 19-year-old woman, yet to be named, and Jade Gorman, 23, who had lived on the streets but was found dead in an apartment. Officials suspect drug overdose related deaths. In two weeks of June, six homeless men reportedly died of overdoses.

According to the government report&nbsp;published in March, drug-related deaths in Northern Ireland have spiked from 92 a decade ago to 218 in 2020, the highest on record.

Just over half of the fatalities were men aged 25-44. Death rates were highest among people aged 25-34.

Belfast mayor Tina Black, council party group leaders and statutory agencies met on Friday to discuss the crisis.

“I’ve done homeless work for 10 years and never seen this amount of distress and tragedy,” The Guardian quoted Paul McCusker, a city councillor and founder of The People’s Kitchen, the charity organising the march, as saying.

“In one hour last Sunday, we were dealing with three overdoses and one cutting; four people slumped over bins. That’s just one hour in Belfast city centre on a Sunday evening.”

A member of the Social Democratic and Labour party (SDLP), McCusker, said that there are not enough accommodation, addiction services and mental health treatment to take care of the rising number of young homeless people.

&nbsp;“Most people we work with take a cocktail of drugs, which puts them at greater risk,” he said. The cost of living was having a “massive” impact on homelessness, <a name="_Hlk109484136">McCusker </a>added.

Canada to decriminalise few drugs in British Columbia to tackle substance abuse

The unprecedented coronavirus (COVID-19) impacted the lives of people across the world. The deadly virus left millions dead and others grieving. People also suffered from long Covid that led to a range of ill impacts on the health of people people.

The pandemic disrupted the lives of people who use drugs in ways that hurt their mental health. According to a study, Covid changed behaviours of drug use, increasing the risk for overdose.&nbsp;

The US study 'Trends in Drug Overdose Deaths Among US Adolescents, January 2010 to June 2021', published this month in JAMA Network analysed drug use.&nbsp;

It noted that the drug supply has increasingly become "contaminated with illicitly manufactured fentanyls and other synthetic opioid and benzodiazepine analogues".&nbsp;

"Adolescent drug use rates remained generally stable between 2010 and 2020, with 30.2% and 30.4%, respectively, of 10th-graders reporting any illicit drug use in the past 12 months, which declined to 18.7% of 10th-graders in 2021," the study noted, referring US-based data.&nbsp;

Drug overdoses have soared during the Covid-19 pandemic, with US overdose deaths topping 100,000 during the 12-month period ending in April 2021, India-based news agency IANS reported, quoting a study published in the journal Addiction Science and Clinical Practice.&nbsp;

As per researchers, the pandemic and strategies for preventing the spread of the virus, such as stay-at-home orders, may have contributed to this increase in deaths.&nbsp;

"We know that there has been a tragic increase in overdose deaths during the pandemic. Our study provides insight into why and how there have been more overdose deaths," said Suzan Walters, research assistant professor at New York University's School of Global Public Health.&nbsp;

Between August 2020 and May 2021, the researchers conducted surveys with 50 individuals who use opioids (without a prescription) or inject drugs, and did in-depth interviews with a subset of 17 participants.&nbsp;

Only 38 per cent of participants felt confident that they could maintain a stable income during the pandemic. Three-quarters of the survey respondents felt more anxious or on edge during the pandemic. More than half felt more depressed and nearly half felt lonelier.&nbsp;

Such issues lead to anxiety and depression, which is associated with increased substance use, which in turn can increase the risk for overdose.&nbsp;

Singer Demi Lovato has opened up about her 2018 drug overdose for the first time. In a new documentary, Lovato revealed that she was minutes from death during the overdose episode.&nbsp;

In an interview with AP, the singer said the overdose had left her with "brain damage", adding, "I still deal with the effects of that today." 
"I don't drive a car, because I have blind spots on my vision," she further added. "And I also for a long time had a really hard time reading. It was a big deal when I was able to read out of a book, which was like two months later because my vision was so blurry."

Former media executive Indrani Mukerjea, arrested for the alleged killing of her daughter Sheena Bora, was discharged on Wednesday from the J J Hospital and was taken back to the Byculla prison, a senior official said.

Mukerjea, who was admitted to the state-run J J Hospital for the treatment of suspected drug overdose has been brought back to the jail, news agency PTI reported quoting Inspector General (prisons) Rajvardhan Sinha.

Her health condition is better, the hospital's dean Dr S D Nanandkar said.

Mukerjea, 46, was on April 6 admitted to the hospital, where she was brought in a "semi-conscious" condition from her cell in the Byculla Jail in south Mumbai.

She subsequently underwent a series of medical tests, according to media reports.

Her urine samples were sent for analysis at a forensic laboratory here and after receiving its report, the hospital authorities said she had an overdose of anti-depressants that were not prescribed to her.

"The reports of her urine sample showed a significant increase in the level of benzodiazepine, a class of anti-depressants," a doctor from the hospital had said, quoting from reports of the Forensic Science Laboratory at Kalina.

The state prisons department earlier ordered an inquiry to find out how Mukerjea fell ill in the jail.

The IG (prisons) will submit his report to the department after completing the inquiry.

Mukerjea, the co-founder of INX Media, is the prime accused in her daughter Sheena Bora's murder case.

Bora (25) was allegedly killed and her body disposed of in a forest area in the neighbouring Raigad district in April 2012, according to the police.

Mukerjea, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai were arrested for the crime. Rai had later turned an approver (prosecution witness) in the case.&nbsp;

Mukerjea, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai were arrested for the crime. Rai had later turned an approver (prosecution witness) in the case.

Maharashtra&nbsp;run JJ Hospital has confirmed an <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/indrani-mukerjea-admitted-to-hospital-undergoes-medical-tests-128956">overdose of medicines by Indrani Mukherjee</a>.

The hospital authorities added that though she was stable now,&nbsp;the onus on finding out how she was driven into an overdose of medicines, lies on police.&nbsp;

Dean of JJ Hospital Dr Sudhir Nanandkar said, "It is a case of drug overdose. She was on anti-depressants. I asked her which tablets she had taken, but she did not reply. I will be asking her again. As far as the overdose is concerned, it is for the police to investigate".

The doctors in the hospital also said that Mukerjea was given medicines orally by jail guards at the specified time. She was also not allowed to store the medicines.&nbsp;
